BAPTISM OF THE LORD
DE PARTE DE PADRE MIKE:
FROM FATHER MIKE:
Baptismal Life
Growing up I always connected water
with fun. In California we had the ocean and my
cousins, my brother, and I spent many summers
jumping in the water, swimming, sailing, surfing,
and fishing. In Oregon we have lakes, rivers, and
even oceans. Rafting, swimming, water skiing, and
even surfing in Oregon can be a lot of fun. I have
noticed something about enjoying water though: at
some point you have to be willing to get wet and
be in it. The more familiar you get with water, the
more you will see it as fun rather than something
to be afraid of.
Today is the feast of the Baptism of the Lord.
It should remind us of our own baptism. Just as it
would be ridiculous to jump in water only to get out
as quickly as we can and never go near it again, in
our baptism, if we want to get the most out of it we
will need to not only take the plunge but get in there
and do something with it. In other words, it’s only
when we put our baptism into practice that we will
appreciate it. Baptism is intended to be a beginning
of a process rather than a ritual that ends religious
practice once it is done. Unfortunately, for many, it
is treated like an empty ritual - a quick plunge that
means nothing now because they never bothered
to learn to swim and enjoy it.
Baptism is a beginning of a new life in Christ.
Baptism is a calling to say, “Yes, Lord, I am following
you and living like you live. I am ready to leave the
boring land of fear and boredom and get in there
and do something worthwhile in life – and share in
Christ’s joy while I do it.” If you are wondering how
this happens, ask yourself what Jesus did. Have
you ever noticed that Jesus wasn’t all about comfort
and security. He worked his life in with the poor and
did something. He helped out the persecuted and
stood up for Godly ways. He worshipped, prayed,
and entered into the lives of people. He made a
difference and tells us that we too can have his joy
and his joy will make us complete (Jn14:11). We
have every ability to do as he did – all we need to
do is take the plunge and enjoy the water.

La vida bautismal
Mientras crecía, yo siempre relacionaba
agua con la diversión. En California, vivíamos
cerca del océano y mis primos, mi hermano y yo
pasamos muchos veranos saltando en el agua,
nadando, surfeando y pescando. En Oregon tenemos lagos, ríos, e incluso océanos. Hacer Rafting, natación, esquí acuático, e incluso navegar
en Oregon puede ser muy divertido. Me he dado
a apreciarlo.
¿Has notado
agua.

POPE FRANCIS
When Pope Francis met before
Christmas with Vatican employees, mostly
lay people with families, he asked them to
do 10 things.
The list sounded remarkably like
suggestions for New Year’s resolutions:
– “Take care of your spiritual life,
your relationship with God, because this
is the backbone of everything we do and
everything we are.”
– “Take care of your family life, giving your children and loved ones not just
money, but most of all your time, attention
and love.”
– “Take care of your relationships
with others, transforming your faith into
life and your words into good works, especially on behalf of the needy.”
– “Be careful how you speak, purify
your tongue of offensive words, vulgarity
and worldly decadence.”
– “Heal wounds of the heart with
the oil of forgiveness, forgiving those who
have hurt us and medicating the wounds
we have caused others.”
– “Look after your work, doing it
with enthusiasm, humility, competence,
passion and with a spirit that knows how
to thank the Lord.”
– “Be careful of envy, lust, hatred
and negative feelings that devour our interior peace and transform us into destroyed
and destructive people.”
– “Watch out for anger that can
lead to vengeance; for laziness that leads
to existential euthanasia; for pointing the
finger at others, which leads to pride; and
for complaining continually, which leads to
desperation.”
– “Take care of brothers and sisters
who are weaker … the elderly, the sick,
the hungry, the homeless and strangers,
because we will be judged on this.”

When you don’t have words to pray.
Last weekend I drove down to Sacramento
to pick up my niece and nephews. I had been talking with a friend the day before about how I didn’t
want to pray, I felt like I couldn’t. They told me I
had to and that I would have plenty of time on my
drive.
So the first four hours of my drive I spent
listening to music, talking on the phone, singing in
the car, doing anything and everything I could to
avoid praying, to avoid having a conversation with
God because I felt I didn’t have the words to pray.
About 20 minutes before I got to the meeting
place I decided to turn off my music and just drive in
silence. I said exactly what I felt to God, “I’m mad
and I have nothing to say to you.” My real words
were a bit sassier. After picking the kids up I turned
the radio back on, and every song seemed to give
me just the words I needed to pray with and those
that didn’t seemed to have exactly what I needed
to hear from God.
In that moment I remembered that prayer
is simply a response to God. It doesn’t have to be
pretty and perfect, it doesn’t even have to be nice.
It is our response to God’s prompting in whatever
state we find ourselves. We open the door and He
does the rest.
Kelsie

a 5:00 PM
él tienen lugar todas estas palabras y misterios;

FAMILY FAITH SHARING
Mark 1:7-11
Today’s reading tells about the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River. By baptizing Jesus,
John lets everyone know that the messiah is not coming, he is already here. When Jesus
came up from the water he heard God’s voice say, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am
well pleased.”
Describe a time when have you done something that revealed Christ’s presence. Describe a time or situation
when you have known that God is pleased with you.
