“T
hey are having a sale.”
It was a little white lie one mother told her
young daughter in the early evening hours
of Mon., Jan. 5th as they walked past the
hundreds lined outside the Frank E. Campbell
Funeral Home on Madison Avenue.
It was a small trick of rhetoric that the man
they had gathered to honor might appreciate,
intended as it was to shield a little girl from
the big notions of life and death – for just a
little bit longer.
Former New York State Governor Mario
Cuomo, 82, died on January 1st, a few hours
after his eldest son, Andrew Cuomo was
sworn in for his own second term as Governor.
Gov. Mario Cuomo was celebrated as a
proud liberal Democrat, a devout Roman
Catholic, and a formidable leader renowned
for soaring oratory and a pragmatic political
philosophy.
The line stretched for blocks.
“We are
diminished
by his
passing,”
said former
Governor
George E.
Pataki.
He would serve three terms.
Cuomo’s wake drew hundreds of mourners
from across New York, who braved frigid
temperatures and a long, hours-long wait to
pay last respects to a man many considered
the state’s best chief executive officer.
Among those in attendance were Vice
President Joe Biden, House Minority Leader
Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Charles Schumer of New
York, former state Comptroller Carl McCall,
and actor Alan Alda.
A patron at a nearby diner, observing
the crowds from the comfort of her booth
indoors, was in awe. The local resident noted
that services for many bold-faced names were
common at the funeral home.
“[But] I’ve never seen anything like this
before,” she said, shaking her head.

the Bronx’s Pelham Park. Cuomo
had been Rubino’s law and
business partner. The pair met after
Cuomo’s final term as governor,
when he joined Willkie, Farr and
Gallagher to resume his career as
a lawyer.

A Bronx
tale

D
ondre Green believes
everyone in New York City
has a Bronx story, whether they
realize it or not.
A photographer and graphic artist,
Green has created a project titled “Bronx
Narratives,” which portrays the experiences
of people living in or visiting the borough.
“Even New Yorkers who have never been
to the Bronx, there’s quite often a reason
for that, so I want to tell that story too,”
said Green, a Bronx native who resides near
Allerton Avenue.
He said the impetus behind his project is to
combat the negative stereotypes of the Bronx
that have existed for the past several decades.
“The Bronx has been dealing with the same
stigma for a long time now — it’s a place a
lot of people don’t want to visit,” remarked
Green.
The “Bronx Narratives” project is
composed of two segments, the first being
a series of photos and comments divided
between 10 individuals — five who are Bronx
residents and five who live in other boroughs
of New York City.
“I wanted to get the viewpoint of people
who don’t live here, to see what their opinion
of the Bronx is,” explained Green.
The second component to “Bronx
Narratives” is a short film.
Green, assisted by his friends Decota
Letman and Hoay Smith, traveled throughout
the Bronx interviewing residents of the
borough. The film highlights locales such as
Yankee Stadium, Bronx Terminal Market,
Andrew Freedman Home, Riverdale and Coop City.
“The film gives a more direct perspective
from the residents who live here,” said Green.
“We hear in their own words what their vision
of the Bronx is.”
Green began work on “Bronx Narratives”
during the summer of 2014, after sharing
a long cab ride with a friend and chatting
passionately about the pros and cons of living
in the Bronx.
“The cab driver, who was also from the
Bronx, overheard our conversation and
interrupted with, ‘I agree with everything
you’ve been saying,’” recalled Green. “It
made me want to explore why people see the
borough the way they do.”
Rather than thinking of the Bronx in terms
of poverty, crime or its distance from more
popular boroughs, Green hopes that people

can recognize it for contributions to the arts
as well as scenic beauty.
Often, all they need is to give the Bronx a
chance.
As Sade Aguila, a Queens resident,
commented after visiting the Bronx, “I didn’t
give it the benefit of the doubt. I allowed
other influences such as people’s opinions and
media to ultimately create my thoughts about
the Bronx.”

De Blasio: Crime down in NYC

dipped in 2014, said Mayor
Bill de Blasio.
Speaking at 1 Police Plaza alongside
Police Commissioner William Bratton, de
Blasio announced this past Mon., Jan. 5th that
the overall crime rate dropped 4.6 percent
in 2014 compared to the previous year, and
that the city had its lowest number of murders
since 1993.
There were 2,600 fewer robberies in 2014
than during the previous year.
“These are numbers that were once
absolutely unimaginable,” de Blasio said.
The mayor also pointed out the success of
the NYPD’s decision to issue tickets, rather
than enact arrests, for low-level marijuana
offenses.
Since the policy went into effect in
November 2014, marijuana arrests were
down 10 percent, according to de Blasio.
He said the policy had helped reduce the
stigmatization of certain communities and
prevented individuals from acquiring a
criminal record for such offenses.
De Blasio and Bratton both defended
the NYPD’s method of “broken windows”
policing, which has endured increased
criticism since the August 2014 death of Eric
Garner, who died in police custody after cops
tried to arrest him for selling loose cigarettes.

And if you’re about to take what you
think of as “natural” dietary supplements,
such as bee pollen or Garcinia cambogia,
you should be aware that FDA has found
some of these products also contain hidden
active ingredients contained in prescription
drugs.
“The only natural way to lose weight is
to burn more calories than you take in,”
says James P. Smith, M.D. That means
a combination of healthful eating and
physical activity.
Dietary Supplements are not FDAApproved
Under the Federal Food, Drug and
Cosmetics Act (as amended by the Dietary
Supplement Health and Education Act of
1994), dietary supplement firms do not
need FDA approval prior to marketing their
products. It is the company’s responsibility
to make sure its products are safe and that
any claims made about such products are
true.
But just because you see a supplement
product on a store shelf does not mean it
is safe, Humbert says. FDA has received
numerous reports of harm associated with
the use of weight loss products, including
increased blood pressure, heart palpitations
(a pounding or racing heart), stroke,

and foods (including teas and coffees) don’t
live up to their claims. Worse, they can
cause serious harm, say FDA regulators.

that are marketed as dietary supplements but
actually contain hidden active ingredients
(components that make a medicine effective
against a specific illness) contained in
prescription drugs, unsafe ingredients that
were in drugs that have been removed from
the market, or compounds that have not
been adequately studied in humans.
“When the product contains a drug or
other ingredient which is not listed as an
ingredient we become especially concerned
about the safety of the product,” says James
P. Smith, M.D., an acting deputy director in
FDA’s Office of Drug Evaluation.
Tainted Products
For example, FDA has found weight-loss
products tainted with the prescription drug
ingredient sibutramine. This ingredient was
in an FDA-approved drug called Meridia,
which was removed from the market in
October 2010 because it caused heart
problems and strokes.
“We’ve also found weight-loss products
marketed as supplements that contain
dangerous concoctions of hidden ingredients
including active ingredients contained
in approved seizure medications, blood
pressure medications, and antidepressants,”
says Jason Humbert, a senior regulatory
manager at FDA. Most recently, FDA has
found a number of products marketed as
dietary supplements containing fluoxetine,
the active ingredient found in Prozac, a
prescription drug marketed for the treatment
of depression and other conditions. Another
product contained triamterene, a powerful
diuretic (sometimes known as “water
pills”) that can have serious side effects and
should only be used under the supervision
of a health care professional.
Many of these tainted products are
imported, sold online, and heavily promoted
on social media sites. Some can also be
found on store shelves.

The Wage Board appointed by the State Labor Commissioner
will meet on Thursday, January 8, 2015, at 3 p.m. The meeting

we turn to Nilka Martell,
who continues to explore her
hometown.
“I am a Bronx native,
daughter, sister, mother of
three beautiful Bronx babies,
photographer, writer and
motivator,” says Martell, of
Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years
until December 2010, she has
since been dedicating her time
to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm
are indefatigable, and
admirable.
“I want to make my fellow
residents aware and informed
of how lovely our borough
is, what it offers, and how to
lend a helping hand in our
environment.”
Of this new time in her life,
Martell says, “I have never felt
so alive.”
The holiday season is coming to a
close, and now is the time to recycle your
tree.
MulchFest 2015 will be held on
Saturday, January 10th and Sunday,
January 11th between 10:00 a.m. to 2:00
p.m. at several locations in the Bronx.
This annual event is bought to you by
New York City Department of Parks and
Recreation, New York City Department
of Sanitation and GreeNYC.
Instead of wrapping up your tree for
disposal, drop it off at a Mulchfest site.
Your tree will be chipped and converted
into mulch, or wood chips.
As you already know, the Bronx is
compromised of 25% parkland. Mulch is
used as a protective layer for our trees and
plantings. When placed as a ring around
tree trunks, mulch assists in controlling
the growth of weeds and helps retain
moisture. When it breaks down, becomes
good compost nourishing and protecting
the tree.
There are kinds of two sites – a chipping
site and a drop-off site. If you choose to
drop off your tree at a chipping site, you

can take home a bag of mulch for your own
garden or tree. If you choose to drop off
your tree at a drop off site, those trees will
later be converted into mulch. That mulch
will used in parks, community gardens and
for street trees throughout the city.
Chipping sites, where mulch will be
distributed for free, are as follows: Brook
Park at Brook Avenue and East 141st
Street; Metropolitan Oval (Parkchester) at
Metropolitan Avenue and Unionport Road;
Soundview Park at Story and Morrison
Avenues; and Van Cortlandt Park, at the
golf course at Bailey Avenue and Van
Cortlandt Park South). The Van Cortlandt
Conservancy will also be hosting free arts
and crafts along with free coffee and apple
cider from Morris Perk.

Nilka Martell, quien continúa explorando
su pueblo natal. “Soy una nativa del Bronx, hija,
hermana, madre de tres hermosos
bebés del Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y
motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia
puertorriqueña.
Asistente legal durante más de 17
años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde
entonces ha dedicado su tiempo

La temporada navideña se acerca a su fin y
es momento de reciclar su árbol.
MulchFest 2015 se llevará a cabo el sábado
10 y el domingo 11 de enero entre las 10:00 am
y las 2:00 pm en varios lugares del Bronx.
Este evento anual es traído a usted por el
Departamento de Parques y Recreación de
la ciudad de Nueva York, el Departamento
de Sanidad de la ciudad de Nueva York y
GreeNYC.
En lugar de envolver su árbol para su
eliminación, entréguelo en un sitio Mulchfest.
Su árbol será convertido en mantillo y abono, o
en astillas de madera.
Como ya sabe, el Bronx tiene un 25% de
zonas verdes. El mantillo se utiliza como
una capa protectora para nuestros árboles
y plantas. Cuando se coloca como anillo
alrededor de los troncos de los árboles, ayuda a
controlar el crecimiento de la maleza y a retener
la humedad. Cuando se descompone, se
convierte en abono nutritivo y protege al árbol.
Hay dos tipos de sitios: uno de astillado y
uno de entrega. Si decide dejar su árbol en un
sitio de astillado, se puede llevar a casa una
bolsa de mantillo para su jardín o un árbol. Si
decide dejar su árbol en uno de entrega, los
árboles más tarde se convertirán en mantillo,
el cual será utilizado en parques, jardines
comunitarios y en árboles de la calle en toda la
ciudad.

mantillo de forma gratuita, son los siguientes:

Dance at dawn

E
arly birds rejoice.
Ready to kick off the new year, literally?
Those who wake before the crack of dawn
can finally dance the night away.
Daybreaker is an early morning floating
dance party—floating because it’s held in
different locations—including a swank 210foot yacht that set sail from lower Manhattan
one Thursday in late December. More than
200 people dressed in everything from animal
costumes to suits lined up at Pier 40 and paid
twenty-five dollars to board the Hornblower
Infinity and dance to club music at 6:00 am.
There is no alcohol at Daybreaker events—
just organic juices, coffees and healthy snacks.
Shawn, a buff twenty-something banker,
was dancing to music spunby Burning Man
DJ The Scumfrog – dressed in a faux fur
hippo onesie. He chose the water-loving
mammal costume because, as he explained,
“It’s Thursday,” adding, “It’s what my last
name translates to from Czechoslovakian.”
He wasn’t the only animal on the dance
floor. While most of the youthful crowd might
be off to work when the party wraps up at
10:00 am, they were dressed to party.
Daybreaker was dreamed up by Matthew
Brimer, co-founder of General Assembly, a
startup school for coding and digital media,
and Radha Agrawal of Super Sprowtz, which
promotes wellness and healthful nutrition

throughout the city. It’s a combination
workout, networking event and mini morning
festival. Brimer told the crowd that the idea
came to him while having dinner with friends
a little more than a year ago.
Instead of starting mornings with a Spartan
workout, he thought a sober dance party was
a better alternative.
Now Daybreaker holds morning events
in New York, London, San Francisco,
Los Angeles and Atlanta. More cities are
scheduled to follow—including Sao Paulo,
Tel Aviv, Cape Town and Mumbai. They
also plan on launching weekend events with
meditation and yoga.
The reason it works, according to Jesse
Israel, is because of what he calls “the science
of dance. Israel, a member of the Daybreaker
team, said that when people dance in a sober
state a lot of things happen.
The body fires off more T-cells, boosting
the immune system. The body also releases
a “love brain wash” of chemicals—
including serotonin, dopamine and other
neurotransmitters like endorphins and others
that help you remember things.
“By being a part of Daybreaker,” argued
Israel, “you activate the ‘love brain wash’.”
On Thursday, two young professionals,
Sarah and Alisa, gazed upon the dance floor.
They said they were feeling the groove but
were not quite ready to jump in. Sarah had
heard about the event through YPlan, an app
that lists NYC events. “It’s good to see a lot of

Y
ou’ve never seen hamburger
buns quite like these.
The Bronx River Art Center (BRAC)
is seeking to put a non-traditional spin on
the way people view food with “The Food
Design Show,” an exhibit that toys with the
limitations of how food is thought of, by
filtering it through the lens of visual artists.
“The purpose is to see the food as art,” said
Karine Duteil, Programs Curator at BRAC.
“It’s design that can be eaten.”
As Duteil explained, the ultimate goal of
the exhibit goes beyond mere aesthetics.
She said the event is designed to shine light
on the fact that many areas of the Bronx offer
limited access to healthy foods.
“Many parts of the Bronx are referred to as
‘food deserts,’” remarked Duteil, with fresh
vegetables and fruit often hard to come by for
families in certain neighborhoods.
“This is a good medium to bring the issue
to the forefront,” said Duteil. “We can get
people focused on the availability of food
within the Bronx.”
Curated by Duteil, “The Food Design
Show” will feature the work of master chef
and molecular gastronomy pioneer Ferran
Adrià, as well as Emilie Baltz, The Cotard
Syndicate and visual artist Maggie Nelson.

Free Winter Family Day

Jan. 10th, the 21st Annual
EmblemHealth Hispanic Games
will take place at The Armory’s
New Balance Track and Field
Center.
Founded in 1994, the EmblemHealth
Hispanic Games seeks to honor Washington
Heights and its Latino tradition.
This is the first year EmblemHealth will
serve as the event’s title sponsor.
The Games are the largest indoor high
school meet in the country with 8,000 student
athletes participating. The meet features
freshman, sophomore, and novice events on
Friday, starting at 3:00 p.m., and a complete
schedule of Invitational and varsity events on
Saturday, starting at 8:00 a.m.
In addition, Saturday at 2 p.m., six high
school boys and six high school girls will
be recognized as “Leaders of Tomorrow,”
outstanding student athletes who excel in the

Partnership aims to showcase
hidden historical gem
T
he Junior League of Pelham
(JLP) has partnered with
Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum
(BPMM) to increase awareness
in the community of the museum’s
many offerings.
The Games are
the largest indoor
high school meet
in the country.
The history of the Bartow-Pell estate dates
back four centuries to 1654 when the land
was acquired from the local Lenape Native
Americans by Thomas Pell, an English doctor
from Connecticut. The Bartow family, Pell
descendants, built the existing mansion in the
late 1830s and lived there until 1888 when it
was purchased by New York City to create
Pelham Bay Park.
Opened as a historic house museum in
1946, BPMM is a vibrant local cultural site
that provides dynamic programs for all ages.
On Sat., Jan. 24th, BPMM and JLP are
hosting “Back in Time with Bartow-Pell” —a
special day of free fun for families (especially

Niall Henry le encanta la cerveza
artesanal.
Y está contando con que a muchas otras
personas en Inwood también les guste.
Henry, junto a su socio Shean Carbin, han
lanzado ‘Tryon Public House’, una barra de
cerveza artesanal en el 4740 de Broadway
cerca de la Calle Thayer.
“Pienso que el vecindario está lista para algo
como esto”, dijo Henry, quien nació en Irlanda y
se crió en el Bronx.
“La razón por la cual la llamamos ‘Public
House’ es porque realmente es para toda
la comunidad”, explicó. “Deseamos ser un
ambiente acogedor para todos, un lugar para el
vecindario donde la gente pueda tomar cerveza
y hablar con amigos”.
Cuando se trata de vender, se puede decir
que Henry sabe lo que está haciendo – el ha
servido en barras la mayor parte de su vida,
ha sido dueño de varios pubs y hasta ayudó
a fundar el ‘Bronx Brewery’ en el 2011. El y
Carbin, quienes se conocieron jugando en
una liga de futbol gaélico local, sintieron que
el vecindario necesitaba un establecimiento
que se especializara en cervezas artesanales
hechas localmente.
La construcción en el local se llevó a cabo
de octubre a diciembre.

El ‘Tryon Public House’ presenta 12 ‘taps’,

regionales del ‘Dyckman Beer Company’ y el
‘Bronx Brewery’.
“Estamos tratando de que sea lo más local

néctar irlandés, ‘Guinness Draft’.

íbamos a ser otro centro nocturno”, explicó.

La construcción en el lugar hizo tremendo
progreso en un periodo de dos meses, desde
octubre a diciembre, y abrió oficialmente este
pasado lunes, 15 de diciembre.

rápido”, dijo Carbin.

l ex gobernador del estado de
Nueva York Mario Cuomo fue
sepultado el martes 6 de enero en la
iglesia católica St. Ignatius Loyola en
Manhattan.
Cuomo, de 82 años, murió por causas
naturales debido a una insuficiencia cardíaca el
jueves 1 de enero, apenas unas horas después
de que su hijo, el gobernador Andrew Cuomo,
diera su discurso inaugural para su segundo
período como gobernador.
El mayor Cuomo sirvió tres períodos como
gobernador estatal de 1983 a 1994.

New York State Electronic Waste Disposal Ban Starts January 1st
Starting January 1, 2015, a state law will make it illegal for New Yorkers to discard
most electronics in the trash. Sanitation workers will no longer collect electronics left at
curbside, and the resident may receive a summons.
The electronics covered by this New York State law include computers and their
peripherals, televisions, fax machines, VCRs, DVD players, printers/scanners, video game
consoles, MP3 players, tablets, and small servers.
The law does not include appliances, batteries, or light bulbs.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), electronics are the fastest
growing category of solid waste in the United States. In addition, electronics contain both
valuable and harmful materials, so it is important that they are responsibly recycled.
“This new law will help keep electronics, and their potentially harmful components, out
of our waste stream,” said Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn García. “By recycling
electronics, New Yorkers can help decrease disposal costs and protect the
environment.”
There are many FREE, convenient options to properly recycle your unwanted
electronics:
•DSNY’s e-cycleNYC program.
Apartment buildings with more than 10 units can enroll for this free
and convenient pickup service. In e-cycleNYC’s first year, the program
enrolled over 400 apartment buildings in all five boroughs and
recycled 255,000 pounds of e-waste.
•Retail drop-off programs.
There are more than 90 locations where you can drop off electronics
(no purchase required), including any Goodwill, Salvation Army, Best Buy,
Staples (no TVs), or the Gowanus E-Waste Warehouse.
•Free mail-back programs.

Green said he was surprised to learn that many
Bronx dwellers were unaware of landmark
places such as Wave Hill and Van Cortlandt

“I feel that a lot of residents don’t even
know about some amazing places in the
Bronx,” he said.
“I don’t hang around or explore the Bronx
as much as I should,” said Claire Reneé, a
White Plains Road resident profiled in Green’s
project. “I’m not sure why, to be truthful.”
While Bronxites are a key part of his
project, Green said the target audience is
people from outside the borough.
“I want the person from Brooklyn, who
doesn’t want to visit the Bronx, to see this and
perhaps realize that it’s not as bad here as they
think,” remarked Green.
“The first step is to make that initial visit,”
he added. “I’m asking New Yorkers, ‘what
will be part of your Bronx narrative?’”

where Cuomo focused on an America
divided between haves and have-nots and
scolded Republican President Ronald
Reagan ignoring the poor.
Often regarded as a candidate for U.S.
President, Cuomo considered a run for
that office in 1991, but ultimately decided
against entering the race.

Los aprendizajes son 10 semanas de clases dirigidas por voluntarios que tienen lugar
una vez a la semana de 4:15 a 5:40 pm. Una exhibición estudiantil al término del
