K e n o s i s
from ἐκένωσεν (ekénōsen) from the verb Greek κενόω (kenóō) that means Emptying
As many of you, know my favorite Christmas Carol is “In the Bleak Midwinter,” which reminds us of the fact that Christ was born
into poverty and obscurity but that for those with eyes to see He is the Son of God, Immanuel, God with us.
Today we celebrate the arrival of the Three Wise Men (or Kings) who come to honor the newborn King of the Jews, the Savior
promised from of old. The Carol “We Three Kings” tells of their journey and of the gifts which they bring and the meaning of each of
those gifts. But “In the Bleak Midwinter” also speaks of bringing gifts to the newborn Savior. The last verse says
“What can I give him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
if I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
yet what I can I give him: give my heart.”
Of course the final sentiment is that there is always something that we can offer to God. We can never say ‘sorry, there’s nothing I
can do.’ That’s never acceptable to God. He knows what we have; He gave it to us. If we say “there’s nothing I can do” then we are telling
God that we are not prepared to share the gifts He has given us that we want to grasp them and keep them for ourselves.
The Scriptures speak of the “kenosis” of Christ – the ‘emptying’. The concept is that Christ, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, put aside – ‘emptied himself’ - of that incredible dignity and became a man, and even went further accepting the ultimate ‘emptying’,
that of Death.
By His Resurrection Christ tells us that it is precisely in ‘emptying’ ourselves that we are filled. By His Rising Christ shows us that
the only path to the fullness of life is to lose that life – to give it away. He tells us things like “what does it profit a man to gain the whole
world and to lose his soul,” and “unless a grain of wheat fall into the ground and die it remains a single grain.”
The Wise Men brought gold, frankincense and myrrh – gifts they had because of their wealth. But they had already emptied themselves by becoming poor pilgrims, wandering in the heat and aridity of the desert to reach the goal they longed for. They had given their
hearts.
As we celebrate this lovely feast, let us look around at our lives and see what it is that the Lord wants us to share with others, and
indeed, what it is that He wants us to empty ourselves of and share with others – could be our impatience, our friendship; our selfishness,
our generosity; our intolerance, our openness; our health, our freedom to do as we wish. There is certain to be something that we can give
to others and thus to the Lord. And if we will do that we will see that Jesus’ promise was true – that in emptying ourselves we are filled
with the infinite reality of God’s life. Fr. Robert.
Human Trafficking Awareness Sessions: The weekend of January 17/18, 2015, after each Mass in the Social Hall, a short awareness session will
be given. Become aware of what is happening in Florida and around the world. Learn what to inform your family, what to be aware of, and how to
protect yourselves, especially the children. Do you know that Orlando is the #1 City in addiction to pornography? That Miami and Tampa are in the
top 10 cities in children prostitution? The average age of girls brought into this trade worldwide, including the United States is 12. It is estimated there
are between 27 to 30 million slaves globally. Learn what you can do to help make others aware of the seriousness of Human Trafficking. Please attend these short sessions after each Mass that weekend and invite others to attend.
A New Beginning in our loving Parish saying: “Here I am Lord.”
We begin each Liturgical Year with the preparation for the birth of Christ Jesus who is God-with-us: Emmanuel. This child, whom all
the peoples of the earth represented by the Three Wise Men (or Kings) is King of the Unverse. Normally kings live a reality which is
beyond the understanding of ordinary folk. It’s a way of life closed, preoccupied with maintaining the comfort of their ‘royal dignity.’ Maybe they feel that if they allow ordinary folk (who they consider inferior) to enter their rarified world they would be giving up
some of their privileges. And in some way we are all kings in the privacy of our own personal lives with our rituals and customs and traditions and tastes and privileges. Can we begin to give up the comfort of the security of our lives and go out to meet others with the idea
of becoming one with them, open to mutual love using the universal language of self-giving and ready to surrender the precious image
that we have of ourselves?
Advent, which we recently celebrated, showed us how Jesus abased Himself, becoming one with us. He didn't boast of His divinity. He
wanted to be what we are while still not losing His divinity or His Kingship. By being one with us He showed us the majesty of His
love. But this king does not demand tribute for allowing us to be in His Palace. On the contrary, He fills us with good things and gives
us the task of telling the world that every Liturgical year is a time of Grace and Blessing. This is the dynamic of salvation: as time goes
by earthly realities are changed into the kingdom that Christ won to establish the Kingdom of God. Our parish is a place where we are
all winners called to promote the Kingdom, bringing the King into our homes so that He may always reign in our hearts where we may
offer Him worship with the gold of our actions, the myrrh of our prayers and the incense of repentance and forgiveness.
Next Sunday we will celebrate the fact that the One Who was adored in the manger, lost and found in the Temple, followed and admired
by His disciples as the Lord Jesus - that this One was baptized by John. He did this to show us His dignity as Son of God who wants to
unite us to Himself through Baptism where we are washed and anointed as priests, prophets and kings. We are the royal people, the
holy assembly, the priestly people, the people of God. This is the time of grace, this is the place of victory. Christ goes first leading us to
victory. Let us protect and foster Consecrated Life and plant the seed of vocations.
Make sure to register in the parish, to attend Mass every Sunday and Holy Day. Give generously of your time, talent and contribute to
the upkeep of the Church. If it is possible go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation every month or two months and receive Communion
frequently, sharing in the life of the Catholic Faith, proclaiming the wonders that the Lord does in your life, following the example of the
Virgin Mary, Mother of the Eucharist.
May St. Ann, our patroness whose Relic we venerate continue to inspire us to draw closer to her Grandson and her Daughter. Then we
can go forward into the world with the royal dignity which is that of those who have been clothed by God as His children. With Jesus as
our model, may we in Jesus love and support and affirm our priests so that each day they may renew the ‘yes’ they said to the Lord on
the day of their ordination. And may the young whom He is calling be able to step forward saying “Here I am, Lord. Send me.”
Fr. Frank.

Kenosis - ἐκένωσεν (ekénōsen) DEL VERBO GRIEGO κενόω (kenóō) "Vaciarse".
Él, no hizo
