January 9, 2015 Claudel; and conductor/composer Brossé’s Black, White and In Between for Violin and Orchestra with Symphony Concertmaster Jessica Guideri as soloist. Photo courtesy UCSB Arts & Lectures 8 CHARLIE CHAPLIN’S MASTERPIECE, City Lights, will screen as it was originally intended - with full symphony orchestra - when UCSB Arts & Lectures and the Santa Barbara Symphony co-produce a pair of concerts Saturday, January 17th at 8pm and Sunday, January 18th at 3pm at the Granada Threatre. Chaplin, the comic actor of extraordinary imagination, celebrated film director, and co-founder of United Artists Studio, once won an Academy Award for music composition. In his film City Lights Chaplin developed the art form of the film score as complementary to the on-screen action in a way that accelerated the story and increased the comedy, a unique style that has come to be known as Chaplinesque. Even though Chaplin could neither read nor write music, he worked with many of Hollywood’s best musicians to create some of the first complete & specific scores for film. “Adding to the dynamic silver screen theme of the evening is the fact that many of the musicians in the Santa Barbara Symphony are also among today’s most successful Hollywood film score musicians,” shared Kevin Flint, Director of Marketing and Audience Development for the Symphony. Chaplin fans and Santa Barbara history buffs will remember that Chaplin had a close connection to Santa Barbara as his favorite getaway destination, especially for his 1943 wedding to Oona O’Neill, the daughter of famed playwright Eugene O’Neill. Chaplain also owned and built the Montecito Inn in 1928, which is still one of the most desirable destinations along the California coast between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
