A Word from the Pastor …
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Today the Christmas Season draws to a close, as the Church celebrates the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord.
Saint John Paul II, in promulgating the Five Mysteries of the Light in 2002, wrote about Christ’s own baptism:
The Baptism in the Jordan is first of all a mystery of light. Here, as Christ descends into the
waters, the innocent one who became “sin” for our sake (cf. 2Cor 5:21), the heavens open
wide and the voice of the Father declares him the beloved Son (cf. Mt 3:17 and parallels), while
the Spirit descends on him to invest him with the mission which he is to carry out.
One of the sites that we visited during the Year of Faith Parish Pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 2013 was the
Jordan River Valley. We noticed that in choosing to be baptized by John in the Jordan, Jesus descended into
the lowest point on the face of the earth. There we learn so much from the holy humility of Christ, who not
only consented to take upon himself our frail humanity, but also lined up among sinners to receive John’s baptism of repentance.
St. Maximus of Turin’s explanation as to why Jesus received John’s baptism is very poignant: “Christ is baptized, not to be made holy by the water, but to make the water holy, and by his cleansing to purify the waters
which he touched.” In Christ, therefore, our human frailty is touched, enlightened, transformed and divinized.
As we celebrate today’s feastday, we are all called to reflect upon the gift of our own baptism. God was able
to make use of our parents - or, in the case of those who received baptism as youth or adults, their journey of
faith – to make us taste eternal life. Baptism is not something that we received because we earned or deserved: it is purely a gift of a loving God. Pope Francis continue encourage each one of us to investigate the
date of our baptism, and cherish it!
In order for us to grow in our faith, some elements are necessary:
 Gratitude towards God – once we lose gratitude, life becomes a drudgery and we start to see ourselves as
victims as soon as suffering or injustice appear;
 Faith is a way – the Christian is never static, but always on the move, spiritually-speaking. Like Abraham,
 we are called to follow the Lord’s lead. As the saying goes, “many folks want to serve God, but only as
advisers.” Such a system goes not work with God!
 Cheerfulness in adversity - God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage! Storms and struggles are
part-and-parcel of Christian life. Events in our life which we despise might be exactly what we need to
grow in our closeness with the Lord.
 Ends in Jerusalem and beyond – a Christian cannot expect to be treated differently from his Master: in today’s society, we are not to expect to be applauded for being disciples of Christ. But just as Christ rose
from the dead, so will all who are in Christ.
 Never walk alone – the beauty of Christian life is that we do not travel alone, but as part of a pilgrim
Church. Through the liturgical celebrations, most especially the Eucharist, we sense the support of our
fellow travels. There is no one who has nothing to offer in the awesome Church we belong to!

POPE FRANCIS ON THE CENTRAL ROLE OF MOTHERS
IN THE CHURCH AND IN THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY
“The first day of the year is the feast day of the Mother
of God, followed by the Epiphany, which recalls the visit of the
Magi. The evangelist Matthew writes, 'And when they were
come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his
mother, and fell down, and worshipped him.' It was the Mother
who, after having generated Him, presents the Son to the
world. She gives us Jesus, she shows Jesus to us.” With these
words Pope Francis began the first catechesis of the Wednesday morning General Audiences of 2015, which he dedicated to
the figure of the mother, both in the family and in the Christian community.
“Every human being owes his or her life to a mother,
and almost always owes much of his or her subsequent existence, human and spiritual formation, to her,” affirmed the
Pope. “However, although the mother is highly exalted from a
symbolic point of view, she is listened to and helped very little
in daily life, and her central role in society is not given much consideration. On the contrary, often the
willingness of mothers to sacrifice themselves for their children is exploited in order to save on social
expenditure.”
Even in the Christian community, the mother is not always given due consideration. “Yet at the
centre of the life of the Church there is the Mother of Jesus. … It is necessary to better understand their
daily struggle to be efficient at work and attentive and affectionate at home; we must better understand
what they aspire to in order to express the best and most authentic results of their emancipation.”
Mothers are “the strongest antidote to individualism. … They are those who most hate war,
which kills their children. They bear witness to the beauty of life. Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero
said that mothers live a 'maternal martyrdom.’ In his homily at the funeral of a priest killed by death
squads, Archbishop Romero said, echoing Vatican Council II, 'We must all be willing to die for our Faith,
even if the Lord does not grant us this honor... Giving life does not only mean being killed; giving life,
having the spirit of martyrdom, is giving in duty, in silence, in prayer, in the honest fulfilment of one's
duty; in that silence of everyday life, giving life a little at a time. Yes, as it is given by a mother, who
without fear, with the simplicity of maternal martyrdom, conceives a child in her womb, gives him life,
nurses him, nurtures him and cares for him with affection. It is giving life. It is martyrdom.' Yes, being
a mother does not mean merely bringing a child into the world, but it is also a choice of life, the decision
to give life.”
“A society without mothers would be an inhuman society, as mothers always know how to show
tenderness, devotion and moral strength, even in the moments of greatest difficulty. Mothers often also
transmit the deepest sense of religious practice. … It is a message that mothers who believe know how
to transmit without much explanation; this arrives later, but the seed of faith is planted in those first
precious moments. Without mothers … faith would lose a good part of its simple, profound warmth.”
“And the Church is a mother,” exclaimed the Pope. “We are not orphans; we are children, we have a
mother – the Virgin, Mother Church and our mother. We are not orphans, we are children of the
Church, we are the children of Mary and of our mother.
Thank you, dear mothers, for what you are in the family and for what you give to the Church and
to the world. And to you, our beloved Church, thank you for being a mother. And to you, Mary, mother of
God, thank you for presenting us to Jesus”.
Following the catechesis, the Holy Father, who last Sunday announced a Consistory for February
during which he will create 20 new cardinals for the Church, greeted, among others, a delegation of
French imams engaged in dialogue between Islam and Christianity, and a group of Polish survivors of
the Auschwitz concentration camp, freed seventy years ago.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK. . .
During the course of the school year our students participate in a variety of contests. This year
the fourth grade students entered the annual Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey 2014-2015 Fourth
Grade Folder competition. Students from schools
across New Jersey submitted posters reflecting the
theme of “Fun Things to Do Instead of Drugs”. Over
5500 artworks were submitted from nearly 400
schools. Thirty finalists were selected. Congratulations to St. Peter School fourth grader Madison
Milla, one of the finalists. Two Grand Prize winners
will be announced in April at a special awards ceremony. Congratulations to Madison and Good Luck!
Many of our students who graduated from
St. Peter’s continue to achieve. Congratulations to
Mark Vintayen, an alum of our school, who was
awarded second place in the Knights of Columbus
International Catholic Citizenship essay contest. He
earned second place in all countries where the
Knights have councils. He currently attends Queen
of Peace High School in North Arlington. We are so
proud of our students, present and past and ask that
St. Peter, Prince of the Apostles, continue to bless
them and their families.
THE SCHOLARSHIP FUND
FOR INNER-CITY CHILDREN
The Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children
invites you to apply for a partial-tuition scholarship for
your child for the 2015-2016 school year beginning January 1, 2015. Applications will be available by visiting our
website at www.sficnj.org. Partial-tuition scholarship are
awarded based on financial need without regard to race,
religion or ethnicity.
The deadline to submit your completed application is April 15, 2015.
Being a current scholarship recipient does not
guarantee an automatic scholarship award for the 20152016 school year. Current recipients as well as all new applicants must submit a completed application every year
along with $30 application fee and the required financial
documentation. In addition, all previous financial award
amounts are not guaranteed and can be changed from year
to year.
All applicants will be notified of our decision on
or before May 29, 2015.

BEREAVEMENT MEETINGS
The Office of Family Life Ministries of the Archdiocese of
Newark sponsors three support groups for Parents Grieving
the Death of a Child. Groups meet year ‘round on the first
Wednesday of each month at 7:30 PM (July and August at
7:00 PM) at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish Center, 60 Byrd
Avenue, Bloomfield, and on the third Monday of each
month at St. Peter the Apostle Parish Center, 445 Fifth Avenue, River Edge. The Support Group for Fathers Who Have
Lost a Child meets quarterly at Notre Dame Parish Center,
359 Central Avenue, North Caldwell. There is no preregistration for any of the groups, and there is no fee. For

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
¿Recuerdas tu bautismo? Permítanme compartir mi
testimonio. No recuerdo los eventos del día en que me bautizaron, pero tengo años recordando que, gracias a Dios y mis padres, estoy bautizado. Trato de vivir mi vida recordando mi
bautismo, buscando que mi comportamiento sea digno de una
persona bautizada.
Fui bautizado al mes de haber nacido, y confirmado
cuando tenía sólo un añito (eran otros tiempos). Hice mi primera (y no última) comunión a los siete años. Continuaba asistiendo a las clases de catecismo (doctrina), no obstante, cuando cumplí 17 años, sentí que algo me faltaba. Mis amigos protestantes me invitaban a sus Iglesias, pero yo buscaba a Dios en
mi Iglesia católica. Un día, gracias al grupo carismático recibí el
bautismo en el Espíritu Santo y desde ese momento mi vida
cambió. Ahora sé que el Espíritu lo había recibido en mi Bautismo, Confirmación y Primera Comunión, lo único que debía
hacer era permitirle actuar en mi vida. Creo que en la vida de
muchos cristianos, el Espíritu Santo sigue esperando que le den
permiso de actuar. Y tú, ¿qué esperas? Pídele al Espíritu que se
mueva en tí y vive tu Bautismo.

DE LA ALTAGRACIA
Invitamos a toda la comunidad hispana, y muy especialmente a la comunidad Dominicana a unirse al Triduo y
Misa que celebraremos en
honor a la Protectora de la
Republica Dominicana, La
Virgen de la Altagracia. Iniciaremos con el Triduo del
Santo Rosario desde el Jueves
22 de Enero hasta el Sábado
24 de Enero a las 7:00 pm en la Casa de Retiros (Antiguo
Convento). También les invitamos a participar en la Santa
Misa en su honor la cual será celebrada el Domingo 25 de
enero a la 1:00 pm. Luego de la misa, ese día tendremos
un compartir en la cafetería de la escuela St. Peter con
comida típica dominicana. Si desean donar algún plato o
colaborar de alguna manera, favor contactar a Martha
