Message from our Pastor
THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
1213 Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole
Christian life, the gateway to life in the
Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua),4 and the door
which gives access to the other sacraments. Through
Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of
God; we become members of Christ, are
incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her
mission: "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration
through water in the word."5
I. What is This Sacrament Called?
1214 This sacrament is called Baptism, after the
central rite by which it is carried out: to baptize
(Greek baptizein) means to "plunge" or "immerse";
the "plunge" into the water symbolizes the
catechumen's burial into Christ's death, from which he
rises up by resurrection with him, as "a new
creature."6
1215 This sacrament is also called "the washing of
regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit," for it
signifies and actually brings about the birth of water
and the Spirit without which no one "can enter the
kingdom of God."7
1216 "This bath is called enlightenment, because
those who receive this [catechetical] instruction are
enlightened in their understanding
. . . ."8 Having received in Baptism the Word, "the true
light that enlightens every man," the person baptized
has been "enlightened," he becomes a "son of light,"
indeed, he becomes "light" himself:9
Baptism is God's most beautiful and magnificent
gift....We call it gift, grace, anointing, enlightenment,
garment of immortality, bath of rebirth, seal, and
most precious gift. It is called gift because it is
conferred on those who bring nothing of their own;
grace since it is given even to the guilty; Baptism
because sin is buried in the water; anointing for it is
priestly and royal as are those who are anointed;
enlightenment because it radiates light; clothing since
it veils our shame; bath because it washes; and seal
as it is our guard and the sign of God's Lordship.10

EL SACRAMENTO DEL BAUTISMO
1213 El santo Bautismo es el fundamento de
toda la vida cristiana, el pórtico de la vida en
el espíritu ("vitae spiritualis ianua") y la puerta
que abre el acceso a los otros sacramentos. Por el
Bautismo somos liberados del pecado y regenerados
como hijos de Dios, llegamos a ser miembros de Cristo y
somos incorporados a la Iglesia y hechos partícipes de su
misión (cf Concilio de Florencia: DS 1314; CIC, can 204,1;
849; CCEO 675,1): Baptismus est sacramentum
regenerationis per aquam in verbo"("El bautismo es el
sacramento del nuevo nacimiento por el agua y la
palabra": Catecismo Romano 2,2,5).
I. El nombre de este sacramento
1214 Este sacramento recibe el nombre de Bautismo en
razón del carácter del rito central mediante el que se
celebra: bautizar (baptizein en griego) significa
"sumergir", "introducir dentro del agua"; la "inmersión" en
el agua simboliza el acto de sepultar al catecúmeno en la
muerte de Cristo, de donde sale por la resurrección con Él
(cf Rm 6,3-4; Col 2,12) como "nueva criatura" (2
Co5,17; Ga 6,15).
1215 Este sacramento es llamado también “baño de
regeneración y de renovación del Espíritu Santo” (Tt3,5),
porque significa y realiza ese nacimiento del agua y del
Espíritu sin el cual "nadie puede entrar en el Reino de
Dios" (Jn 3,5).
1216 "Este baño es llamado iluminación porque quienes
reciben esta enseñanza (catequética) su espíritu es
iluminado" (San Justino, Apología 1,61). Habiendo
recibido en el Bautismo al Verbo, "la luz verdadera que
ilumina a todo hombre" (Jn 1,9), el bautizado, "tras haber
sido iluminado" (Hb 10,32), se convierte en "hijo de la
luz" (1 Ts 5,5), y en "luz" él mismo (Ef 5,8):
El Bautismo «es el más bello y magnífico de los dones de
Dios [...] lo llamamos don, gracia, unción, iluminación,
vestidura de incorruptibilidad, baño de regeneración,
sello y todo lo más precioso que hay. Don, porque es
conferido a los que no aportan nada; gracia, porque es
dado incluso a culpables; bautismo, porque el pecado es
sepultado en el agua; unción, porque es sagrado y real
(tales son los que son ungidos); iluminación, porque es luz
resplandeciente; vestidura, porque cubre nuestra
vergüenza; baño, porque lava; sello, porque nos guarda
y es el signo de la soberanía de Dios» (San Gregorio
Nacianceno, Oratio 40,3-4).

January 11, 2015 First Sunday in Ordinary Time: The Baptism of the Lord
Gospel reading Mark 1:7-11
This is what John the Baptist proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his
sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” It happened in those days that Jesus came from
Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the
Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
Brief commentary:
With today’s feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the Christmas season concludes and the season of Ordinary Time begins. Yet Christmas is
Christ, and so it is for us a constant reality of divine grace. Having ‘prepared the way of the Lord’ in the season of Advent, celebrated in
Christmas the entrance of God into our world in Jesus Christ, in whom he joined humanity and all creation in love and solidarity, the feast
of the Baptism of the Lord now calls us to a profound renewal of our lives in God and a recommitment to following Jesus Christ in whom
we have been baptized. Just as his baptism at the Jordan was a profound experience that inaugurated his public mission, so also our
baptism – our sacred immersion into his death and resurrection – unites us to him and so initiates our lives as Christians, those redeemed
by Christ, vivified by his Spirit, and adopted by the Father. Among Orthodox Christians this feast is also considered ‘another Epiphany’,
another great manifestation of the Triune God to the world: the Son is baptized, the Spirit descends upon him “like” a dove, and the voice
of the Father is heard. It is in the Name of one true living God, who is the Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - that we are baptized.
Following the Christmas season, we hear today the text from Isaiah: “Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am
pleased, upon whom I have put my spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations.” This same heavenly proclamation is heard at Jesus’
baptism: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” It is as God’s presentation of Jesus to the world, following the
celebrations of Christmas on this feast of the Baptism, but also as the invitation to follow Jesus wholeheartedly henceforth. The readings
are rich with the themes of life-giving water free given, the springs of life from which all can freely draw, and new birth in Jesus Christ
through baptism. Our lives are linked to his by this act of grace and faith in the watery immersion into his death and resurrected life. Our
baptism is a constant reality, not simply a past event; in baptism we are Christianized (united to Christ) by the grace of the Spirit and
become Christians. Christ’s grace in our lives is the breakthrough that frees us by redeeming us and joining us to the love of God. Peter’s
speech in the book of the Acts of the Apostles succinctly yet powerfully describes Jesus and his ministry: “…beginning in Galilee after the
baptism…God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by
the devil, for God was with him.” Likewise all baptized into Jesus Christ – all who have entered into the life of Jesus Christ – are ‘anointed
by God with the Holy Spirit and power to go about doing good, healing, liberating, graced by God’s presence’. Baptism in Jesus Christ
means believing in him and believing him so convincingly that we follow his example as the children of God and brothers and sisters in the
Church.

Lectura del santo evangelio según San Marcos 1:7-11
En aquel tiempo, proclamaba Juan: “Detrás de mí viene el que puede más que yo, y yo no merezco agacharme para desatarle las sandalias.
Yo os he bautizado con agua, pero él os bautizará con Espíritu Santo.” Por entonces llegó Jesús desde Nazaret de Galilea a que Juan lo
bautizara en el Jordán. Apenas salió del agua, vio rasgarse el cielo y al Espíritu bajar hacia él como una paloma. Se oyó una voz del cielo:
“Tú eres mi Hijo amado, mi predilecto.”
Comentario breve:
Con la fiesta de hoy del Bautismo del Señor, la Navidad concluye y Tiempo Ordinario comienza. Aun la Navidad es Cristo, y es así para
nosotros una constante realidad de gracia divina. Haber ‘preparado el camino del Señor’ en el Adviento, celebrado en la Navidad la entrada
de Dios en nuestro mundo en Jesucristo, en quien unió la humanidad y la creación en amor y solidaridad, la fiesta del bautismo del Señor
ahora nos llama a una renovación profunda de nuestras vidas en Dios y con compromiso en siguiendo a Jesucristo en quien hemos sido
bautizados. Así como su bautismo en el Jordán fue una experiencia profundo que inauguro su misión publica, también nuestro bautismo –
nuestro sagrada inmersión en su muerte y resurrección – nos une a el y así inicia nuestras vidas como cristianos, aquellos redimidos por
Cristo, vivificados por su Espíritu, y adoptados por el Padre. Entre los cristianos Ortodoxos esta fiesta también se considera como ‘otra
Epifanía’, otra gran manifestación del Dios trino al mundo: el Hijo es bautizado, el Espíritu desciende sobre el “como” una paloma, y la
voz del Padre se oye. Es en el Nombre del único Dios vivo, quien es la Trinidad – Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo – que somos bautizados.
A la conclusión de la Navidad, oímos hoy el texto de Isaías: “Mirad a mi siervo, a quien sostengo; mi elegido, a quien prefiero. Sobre él he
puesto mi espíritu, para que traiga el derecho a las naciones.” Esta misma proclamación celestial se oye en el bautismo de Jesús: “Tu eres
mi hijo amado; en quien tengo puesto mis complacencias.” Es como si fuese la presentación divina de Jesús al mundo, siguiendo las
celebraciones de Navidad en esta fiesta del Bautismo, pero también es una invitación a seguirle sin reserva en adelante. Las lecturas son
ricas con los temas del agua viva dada libremente, de los manantiales de vida de cuales podemos tomar libremente, y de nueva vida en
Jesucristo por el bautismo. Nuestras vidas están vinculadas a la del por este acto de gracia y fe que es la inmersión acuosa en su muerte y
vida resucitada. Nuestro bautismo es una realidad constante, no simplemente un evento del pasado; por el bautismo somos cristianizados
(unidos a Cristo) por la gracia del Espíritu y nos convertimos en Cristianos. La gracia de Cristo en nuestras vidas es un logro que nos libera
redimiéndonos y uniéndonos al amor de Dios. El discurso de Pedro en el libro de los Hechos de los Apóstoles sucintamente pero
poderosamente describe el ministerio de Jesús y su ministerio: “…ungido por Dios con la fuerza del Espíritu Santo, que pasó haciendo el
bien y curando a los oprimidos por el diablo, porque Dios estaba con él.” Asimismo todos bautizados en Jesucristo – todos quienes han
entrado en la vida de Jesucristo – son ‘ungidos por Dios con el poder del Espíritu para pasar haciendo el bien, sanando, liberando, con la
gracia de la presencia de Dios’. Bautizados en Jesucristo significa creyendo en el y creyendo tan convincentemente que le seguimos su
ejemplo como hijos de Dios y como hermanos y hermanas en la Iglesia.

2015 Archbishop’s Charity and Development Drive Begins
As we begin the year 2015, we have so much to reflect upon
and to be grateful for. We are called upon by God to be good
stewards of the gifts He has given us by placing those gifts at
His service. In the coming days, many of you will receive a
letter from Archbishop Thomas G. Wenski regarding the 2015
Archbishop’s Charity and Development Drive (ABCD). Please
read it and prayerfully consider supporting the Archdiocese of
Miami and its many life-changing ministries.
For more than fifty years, the Archdiocese of Miami has been
building and sustaining the Catholic community in South Florida. That has been made possible because of people like you.
Since its inception, the Archbishop’s Charities and Development Drive (ABCD) has always been a conduit to carrying out
God’s Will. The good works that ABCD makes possible are a
testimony to our faith, a faith that is very much alive and is a
part of each and every one of us.
Let us join together to be One in Faith, One in Hope, One in
Charity. Thank you for your support of ABCD.

Comienza la Campaña de Caridades y Desarrollo del Arzobispo del 2015
Al comenzar el año 2015, tenemos mucho sobre lo cual reflexionar y por lo cual estar agradecidos. Hemos sido llamados
por Dios a ser buenos administradores de los dones que Él nos
ha dado, empleando esos dones a Su servicio. En los próximos
días, muchos de ustedes recibirán una carta del Arzobispo Thomas G. Wenski con respecto a la Campaña de Caridades y
Desarrollo del Arzobispo (ABCD) del 2015. Por favor, léanla
y, en oración, consideren el dar su apoyo a la Arquidiócesis de
Miami y a los ministerios que cambian tantas vidas.
Durante más de cincuenta años, la Arquidiócesis de Miami ha
estado edificando y sosteniendo a la comunidad católica en el
Sur de La Florida. Esto ha sido posible gracias a personas como ustedes. Desde su creación, la Campaña de Caridades y
Desarrollo del Arzobispo (ABCD) siempre ha sido un conducto para llevar a cabo la voluntad de Dios. Las buenas obras que
el ABCD hace posible, son un testimonio de nuestra Fe, una Fe
que está muy viva y es una parte de todos y cada uno de nosotros.
Mantengámonos Unidos en la Fe, Unidos en la Esperanza y
Unidos en la Caridad.
