Vom 30. Januar bis 1. Februar 2015 ist Australien,
vertreten durch ihre königliche Münzstätte, offizieller Ehrengast der 44. World Money Fair in
­Berlin. Diese Ehre fällt der Royal Australian Mint
in Canberra nach 1993 und 2000 zum dritten Mal
zu. 2015 gibt es für die Königliche Münzstätte auf
dem 5. Kontinent wieder Grund zu feiern; ein Geburtstag steht bevor. Vor 50 Jahren eröffnete
Prinz Philip, der Prinzgemahl der britischen Königin Elisabeth II., die neue Münzstätte in Canberra.
From January 30th to February 1st, 2015, Australia,
represented by the Royal Australian Mint, is the
official guest of honor at the 44th World Money
Fair in Berlin. For Canberra’s Royal Australian Mint
it is the third time, after 1993 and 2000, to receive
this honor. In 2015, there is again a reason to celebrate for the Royal Mint of the fifth continent –
an imminent anniversary. Fifty years ago, Prince
Philip, Prince Consort of Queen Elizabeth II.,
­
opened the new Canberra mint.
In Berlin wird mit Australien ein Traumland im
Rampenlicht stehen, das bevorzugte Ferienland
vieler Europäer. An der World Money Fair in Berlin
werden die Gedenkmünzen aus Australien präsentiert. Diese erfüllen, was die Umsetzung der Motive und die Qualität betrifft, die anspruchvollsten Sammlerwünsche. Australiens

limelight at Berlin’s World Money Fair, where Australian commemorative coins will be showcased.

Der World Money Fair Award gilt als einer der
wichtigsten numismatischen Ehrenpreise weltweit. 2014 wurde Beverley Lepine nach ihrer
rund 27jährigen Karriere bei der Royal Canadian
Mint (RCM) mit dieser besonderen Auszeichnung
geehrt.
1987 begann die erfolgreiche Managerin ihre
Laufbahn bei einer der weltweit größten Prägestätten als Leiterin der Finanzabteilung (Director
of Finance), wechselte 1996 in den Vorstand und
verantwortete ab 2003 als Chief Operating Officer (COO) die Bereiche Vertrieb, Produktion, Forschung und Business Development.
Albert M. Beck, der als Ehrenpräsident der World
Money Fair die begehrte silberne Ehrenmedaille
überreichte, fand in seiner Laudatio viele lobende
Worte für die bescheidene Dame in der ersten
Reihe.
„Ich durfte im Verlauf der letzten fünfzig Jahre viele einflussreiche Personen unserer Branche kennenlernen. Eine der erfolgreichsten ist Madame

this prestigious distinction, following a career of
27 years at the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM).
The successful manager started her career at one
of the largest mints in the world as Director of Finance in 1987. In 1996, she was appointed to the
board of directors and since 2003 has held the
position of Chief Operating Officer, being responsible for distribution, production, research and
business development.
In his award speech, Albert M. Beck, Honorary
President of the World Money Fair, who presented
the coveted silver medal, had many praising
words for the modest lady sitting in the first row.
“In the past fifty years I have had occasion to
meet many influential people from our trade.

80 % auf den internationalen Märkten erwirtschaftet werden. Unter ihrer Regie wurde die Erweiterung und Modernisierung des Hauptsitzes
der Münze in Winnipeg, Manitoba, und der Aufbau des bedeutenden „Hieu C. Truong Forschungsund Entwicklungszentrums“ mit einem Investment von über 70 Mio. $ absolut reibungslos vollzogen. Durch ihr Zutun hat das Technical

Standing Ovations und viele Hochrufe begleiteten
Beverley Lepine auf ihrem Weg zum Podium, als sie
sich mit der Entgegennahme des Preises beim alljährlichen Gala-Diner der World Money Fair auch
in den wohlverdienten Ruhestand verabschiedete.

Standing ovation and many cheers accompanied
Beverley Lepine on her way to the podium to receive the prize at the yearly World Money Fair gala
dinner, where she used the opportunity to announce her well-earned retirement. “We lose a
distinguished expert of the business and an impressive leadership figure,” Mr. Beck commented
on her retiring from active service. “We will miss
you dearly!”

Seit über 60 Jahren sind Olympiamünzen nun
schon internationale Botschafter der Olympischen Bewegung, in denen sich Sport, Kunst und
Kultur miteinander vereinen.
For more than 60 years, Olympic coins have been
international ambassadors for the Olympic
Movement, uniting the worlds of sport, art and
culture.
Die Münzen werben für das olympische Ideal und
leisten damit einen Beitrag zur Geschichte und
Kultur. Doch darüber hinaus sind sie als Einnahmequelle eine wichtige Stütze bei der Veranstaltung Olympischer Spiele.
Their contribution is not only historical and cultural, promoting the Olympic ideal; they also give
solid support to the organisation of the Olympic
Games by providing a welcome source of revenue.
Für ein derart überzeugendes Konzept sind die
Olympiamünzen allerdings eine relativ neue Erscheinung, zumindest innerhalb der modernen
olympischen Geschichte. Das Sammelabenteuer
begann 1951, als Finnland eine offizielle Olym­
piamünze herausgab um die Finanzierung der
Olympischen Sommerspiele von Helsinki 1952 zu
unterstützen. Das war die erste Olympiamünze
in der Geschichte der Olympischen Spiele der
Neuzeit. Seither wurden fast alle Olympischen
Spiele vom Schmuck offizieller Olympiamünzen
begleitet.

Yet for such a compelling concept the Adventure
of Olympic coin collecting is a relatively recent
phenomenon - at least in terms of modern Olympic history. They started in 1951, when Finland issued an official Olympic coin, to help finance the
1952 Helsinki Olympic Games. This was the first
Olympic coin in the history of the modern Olympics. Since then almost every Olympic Games has
been graced with official Olympic coins.
Seit der damalige IOC-Präsident Juan Antonio Samaranch 1993 die Olympische Sammlerkommission einrichtete, wurden alle offiziellen Olympiamünzenprogramme im Rahmen der angesehenen
World Money Fair der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt.
Ich bin mir sicher, dass die neuen Gedenkmünzen
anlässlich der Olympischen Sommerspiele in Rio
de Janeiro den weltweiten Siegeszug der Olympiamünzen fortsetzen werden.
Die Olympische Sammlerkommission (heute:
Olympische Kommission für Philatelie, Numismatik und Memorabilien) und die World Money Fair
haben die Sammler von Olympiamünzen von Anfang an unterstützt.
Der World Money Fair 2015 wünsche ich einen
großen Erfolg und lade alle Münzensammler und
Besucher der Messe dazu ein die Olympiamünzen
zu erleben, zu sammeln und dadurch teilzuhaben
am olympischen Geist.

story of Olympic coins.
The Olympic Collectors’ Commission (now The

Commission) and World Money Fair have been
supporting Olympic collectors since the very beginning.

of numismatics in Berlin, building a singular
bridge across all periods of minting, from antiquity to the future. For countless coin dealers and
collectors from all over the world, mints of the
most important issuing states, retailers, wholesalers, manufacturers, machine builders and national institutions the Berlin event provides a
platform unique in the world of coins.

conferences, the schedule of the Fair is filled with
appointments and discussions with colleagues,

new German € 2 regular issue collector coins are
presented in a ceremony held at the Federal
Chancellery.
Der Berufsverband des deutschen Münzenfachhandels e.V. unterhält wieder einen großen Informationsstand mit unverbindlicher Begutachtung
und Schätzung von Münzen, einem Glücksrad,
Münztauschaktion sowie weiteren Events.
The Berufsverband will again have a large booth
offering noncommittal assessment and valuation
of coins, a wheel of fortune, a coin swap promotion and more events.
Von unseren inzwischen nahezu 240 Mitgliedern
nimmt eine sehr große Anzahl entweder als Aussteller oder als Fachbesucher an dieser Messe teil.
Als größter Fachverband in Europa sind wir auch
in die Organisation der Messe eingebunden und
stehen jederzeit für allgemeine Hilfe und Informationen zur Verfügung.

A large number of our meanwhile almost 240
members either participate as exhibitors or come
to the Fair as visitors. As the largest association of
coin trade professionals in Europe, we are involved with the organization of the World Money

This year again, the World Money will be one of
the largest and most important numismatic
events. The combination of many long-standing
firms, and mints from all over the world, together with the great number of coin dealers, makes
the World Money Fair unique. The earliest coins
struck in antiquity are presented side by side
with the coin projects modern mints are planning to realize in the future. Thus, over 2,500
years of worldwide coin making come alive at

Our association, founded in 1950, has its own

Die World Money Fair 2015 ist auch 25 Jahre nach
der Gründung der FENAP wieder Gastgeber für
das alljährige Treffen der Vertreter der Europäischen Münzenhändlerverbände, wofür wir den
Veranstaltern herzlich danken.
In 2015, 25 years after the founding of FENAP, the
World Money Fair once more hosts the yearly
meeting of the representatives of the European
coin trade associations, for which we extend a
sincere thanks to the event’s organizers.
Die diesjährige Versammlung wird leider wieder
ganz im Zeichen des Kulturgutschutzes stehen,
denn die EU hat im Sommer letzten Jahres die bewährte Richtlinie zur Rückgabe von „illegal“ aus
einem Mitgliedsstaat innerhalb des gemeinsamen Kulturraumes Europa verbrachten „nationalen Kulturgüter“ in abgeänderter Form neu gefasst und zwar gegen den erklärten Willen der
Mehrheit der Bürger und Sammler, die sich an der
vorhergehenden Konsultation beteiligt hatten.
Die Beweisumkehr wird darin eingeführt, ebenso
wie die zeitlichen Limits für Rückforderungen
deutlich auf drei Jahre erhöht worden sind. Der
Kulturgutbegriff richtet sich nunmehr rein nach
nationalen Vorschriften, die oft klar gegen den Artikel 36 des EU-Vertrages verstoßen. Wertgrenzen
wurden abgeschafft ebenso wie die Kategorien­
einteilung der potentiellen nationalen Kulturgüter. Jede auch noch so unbedeutende Münze kann

definition of cultural property is now exclusively
determined by national regulations which often
clearly infringe Article 36 of the EU Treaty. Value
thresholds were abolished, as well as the classification of potential national treasures in categories. Any coin, as insignificant as it may be, can

Bundes Dr. Monika Grütters nicht nur darauf, sondern glaubt auch gleich den gesamten deutschen

dem Münzenhandel finanzieren. Denken Sie daran, dass Ulrike Meinhof von ihrer Großmutter
wohl immer Gedenkmünzen geschenkt bekam,
von denen sie sich und ihren kriminellen Freunden anonym eine Currywurst kaufen konnte.
Verlieren Sie bitte trotzdem nicht die Lust am

Beteiligung von Sammlern und friedlichen Händlern aus aller Welt beweist, dass unser Hobby

Within 18 months, this directive must be transposed into German legislation. Unfortunately, the
Federal Government Commissioner for Culture
Dr. Monika Grütters is not limiting herself to this,
but thinks it necessary to tighten the entire national protection of cultural objects in the process,
as she believes that terrorists fund themselves
through coin trade. Think of Ulrike Meinhof who
probably used the commemorative coins her
grandmother gave her as a present to anonymously buy herself and her criminal friends a
“currywurst”.
I hope that, despite all this, you will not lose interest in coin collecting, but enjoy this important
event in Berlin attended by a large number of collectors and peaceful coin dealers from all over the
world, thus proving that our hobby has nothing
to do with terrorism financing.

Schon lange vor der eigentlichen Entdeckung
Australiens hatten Gelehrte die Existenz einer
„Terra Australis“ behauptet, die theoretisch als
Gegengewicht zu den Landmassen der nördlichen Erdkugel vorhanden sein müsse. Nachdem
im 16. Jahrhundert portugiesische, französische,
spanische und vor allem holländische Seefahrer
tatsächlich die Küsten Australiens erreichten,
maß man den Landmassen allerdings zunächst
wenig Bedeutung zu. Die entdeckten Landstriche der Westküste wirkten derart trocken und
unfruchtbar, dass es kaum lohnenswert erschien, das Land in Besitz zu nehmen. Erst als am
28. April 1770 Captain James Cook im Auftrag
der britischen Krone die fruchtbarere Ostküste
Australiens ansteuerte und die „Terra Nullius“
(unbewohntes Land) als den lange gesuchten
„Südkontinent“ kartographierte, wechselte das
von den Aborigines seit Jahrtausenden bewohnte Land als neue britische Kolonie „New South
Wales“ den Besitzer.

and barren that it hardly seemed worthwhile to
take possession of the land. Only when Captain
James Cook, on April 28th , 1770, on order of the
Crown, headed to explore the fertile Eastern coast
and map the ‚terra nullius‘ (uninhabited country)
as the long-searched-for ‚southern continent‘,

Visiting the Royal Australian Mint
Australien ist für jeden Reisenden eine Offenbarung und nicht zuletzt durch seine Vielfalt und
Weite ein klassisches Einwandererland. Wer hier
zu Gast ist, spürt bis heute eine unvergleichliche
Offenheit und Gastfreundschaft. Jeder scheint
den über 23 Millionen Einwohnern, die sich über
viele Generationen aus allen Ländern der Welt
hier angesiedelt haben, herzlich willkommen und
so wundert es nicht, dass manchem Besucher
noch beim Heimflug die heimliche Nationalhymne der Australier, die „Waltzing Matilda“, in den
Ohren klingt.
Fences Don’t Make Friends!
Die unglaublich warmherzige Ausstrahlung der
Australier durfte auch ich auf meinen vielen
Fahrten quer durchs Land immer wieder erleben.
So fiel mir beispielsweise auf, dass die meisten
privaten Grundstücke nicht wie in Europa von
Mauern und Hecken begrenzt sind und die Menschen überall zwanglos beieinander sitzen. Mein
Staunen beantwortete ein braungebrannter
Schotte, der vor 50 Jahren nach Australien gekommen war, mit der schlichten Feststellung:
„Fences don’t make friends“. Dieser Satz hat sich
mir tief eingegraben und begleitet mich in vielen
Situationen – nicht zuletzt, wenn mich zwischen
den Zäunen und Gattern europäischer Vorstädte
die Anonymität des distanzierten Nebeneinanders beschleicht.

Australia is a revelation for every traveler and a
classical immigration country, if nothing else, because of its diversity and vastness. Visitors are received with a unique openness and hospitality.
Everybody seems to be welcome to the over 23
million inhabitants who settled here over generations, arriving here from countries all over the
world. On the flight back home, some visitors
may even recall the sound of Australia‘s unofficial
anthem ‚Waltzing Matilda‘.

Australien scheint zu weit für derartige Kleingeistigkeit. Wer sich an den unglaublichen Naturwundern der australischen Landschaften satt gesehen
hat – was eigentlich nur phasenweise geschehen
kann – erlebt auch in den Metropolen eine unbeschreibliche Offenherzigkeit, Vitalität und Moderne. So besticht zum Beispiel die Küstenstadt Sydney – benannt nach dem britischen Innenminister
Lord Sydney, in dessen Amtszeit Tausende britische Gefangene an der australischen Küste angesiedelt wurden – nicht nur durch ihr weltberühmtes „Opera-House“ im Hafen, sondern durch ihre
unvergleichlich quirlige Atmosphäre. Auch hier,
ebenso wie in der zweitgrößten Stadt Melbourne,
spielt der Sport eine große Rolle und ist fester Bestandteil des öffentlichen Lebens. Bestes Beispiel
sind die seit 1905 in Melbourne ausgetragenen
„Australian Open“, die als eines der vier großen
Grand-Slam-Tennisweltturniere für genau so viel
Furore sorgen wie die seit 1996 stattfindenden
Formel-I-Rennen. Unvergesslich bleiben auch die
Olympischen Sommerspiele 1956 in Melbourne
und 2000 in Sydney, an die weltweit erfolgreiche
Gedenkmünzenprogramme erinnern.
Australia appears to be too vast for such narrow-mindedness. Once you have seen enough of
the stunning natural wonders of the Australian
countryside – although one may get tired of it only temporarily – you will find an unbelievable
openness, vitality and modernity in the country‘s
huge cities. The coastal city of Sydney, named
­after Lord Sydney, who in his times as British
Home Secretary sent thousands of convicts to
settle on the Australian coast, does not only boast
its world-famous opera house, located in Sydney
harbor but also an incredibly inspiring and lively
atmosphere. Same as in the second largest city,
Melbourne, sports play an important role and are
an integral part of public life. A perfect example
for this is the Australian Open, one of the four
Grand Slam tennis events, held since 1905 in
­Melbourne, which causes as much excitement as
the Formula One motor races the city has hosted
since 1996. The Melbourne 1956 and the Sydney
2000 Olympic Summer Games also remain unforgotten events, commemorated with worldwide
successful Olympic coin programs.
Fences Don’t Make Friends!
I had the privilege to experience the incredibly
warm nature of the Australians on the many trips
I made through the country. One of the things
that caught my attention was that most private
properties are not limited by walls or hedges like
in Europe. And everywhere people just take any
opportunity to sit and talk. When expressing my
astonishment about that, a deeply tanned Scotsman, who had arrived to Australia 50 years earlier, put it quite simply: “Fences don‘t make
friends”. This sentence left a mark in my memory
and has accompanied me in many situations –
not least, when the anonymity of distanced coexistence in suburban neighborhoods in Europe
gives me strange feelings.

Das Stichwort Münzen führt uns unweigerlich
nach Canberra, der dritten großen Metropole und
Sitz der australischen Regierung, die mit rund
356.000 Einwohnern knapp 290 km südwestlich
von Sydney und rund 670 km nordöstlich von
Melbourne liegt. Nach langjährigen Auseinandersetzungen, wo die Hauptstadt des 1907 als „Dominion des Britischen Commonwealth“ für unabhängig erklärten australischen Staates verortet
werden sollte, wurde 1908 Canberra als zukünftige Hauptstadt bestimmt.
The mention of coins automatically bring us to
Canberra, the third important city and seat of the
Australian government, with a population of
about 356,000, located about 290 km southwest
of Sydney and 670 km northeast of Melbourne.
After long years of dispute over where the capital
of Australia should be located, following the independence of Australia as a dominion of the British
Commonwealth declared in 1907, the rather rural
site of Canberra was only chosen in 1908, and the
Parliament moved there in 1927.

eröffnete His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke

called the ‚Bush Capital‘, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Companion of the Order of Australia and
Prince Consort of Queen Elizabeth II, opened the
Royal Australian Mint as the first and only completely independent mint of the country in February 1965, as the Canberra Mint, unlike the mints
of Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, was not going to
work as a branch of the British Royal Mint.

„100 Jahre Olympische Spiele der Neuzeit“ 1993
in Basel, stellt die RAM auch im Jahr 2000 ein
sportliches Großereignis in den Mittelpunkt und
legte anlässlich der Olympischen Sommerspielen in Sydney mit 52 Münzen ein
überaus vielfältiges Olympia-Münzenprogramm auf.
The reason why a new mint was established was
the introduction of decimal currency, brought into circulation from February 1966. Until 1983, the
Royal Australian Mint produced the Australian
coins together with the British Royal Mint. Since
then, the Mint has been the sole producer of coinage for Australia, besides making coinage for several Asian and Pacific countries – presently for
Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Cook Islands – as well as collectors‘ commemorative coins for all aforementioned countries and New Zealand.

in der Münzpolitik und Münzenindustrie eine
wichtige Rolle. Seit 1984 ist die RAM Mitglied
der internationalen Münzdirektorenkonferenz
(MDC), die bereits zweimal – in den Jahren 2000

Ladies’ and ‘100 Years of Modern Olympic

the Holy Grail of the business world in
recent years. The numismatic sector is
no exception but that does not mean
we should cultivate young coin
collectors at the expense of our loyal
and enthusiastic adult collectors and
their wealth of experience. We are
lucky to have many such people in
Austria and it is our goal to encourage
them to share their passion for coins
with their children, young relatives
and friends. The themes of our
collector coins are carefully chosen so
that they interest and attract people of
all ages, and we are going to start
publishing a dedicated youth supplement with our magazine, die Münze

ROYAL SPANISH MINT (FNMT-RCM)
On 2 June 2014 His Majesty the King Juan Carlos signed and
presented to the Prime Minister a document communicating his
decision to abdicate the Spanish throne. On 19 June 2014 his son,
heir to the Spanish Crown, took the Oath set forth in the Spanish
Constitution and was proclaimed King before the Parliament,
taking the name of Felipe VI. This historical event has marked
most of the recent issues of the Spanish Royal Mint: the official
Proclamation Medal, a 2 Euro commemorative coin and a 30 Euro
collector coin.
The first Euro circulation coins bearing the effigy of the new King
Felipe VI are included in the Mint Set 2015 that is launched at the
World Money Fair and is available in our booth D1.
Last but not least, the first collector proof coins with Felipe VI in
the obverse will be the ones in the Europa Programme, dedicated
to the 70th Anniversary of the End of World War II.
Last December we launched the first five coins in the “Spanish
World Heritage Cities” series, a collection of coins dedicated to
the fifteen Spanish Cities that have been included by UNESCO
in the World Heritage List. The additional ten coins that will
complete this collection will be issued within 2015.

In 1992, on the occasion of the commemoration of the Discovery
of America by Christopher Columbus, we started a fruitful
cooperation with some Iberian-American countries. This March
we will be presenting the 10th issue in these series under the joint
theme of “Cultural Roots”. This collection will comprise silver
coins from Argentina, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Nicaragua,
Paraguay, Peru, Portugal and Spain.
400 years ago the second volume of Cervantes’ Don Quixote was
published, being as successful as the first. The Spanish Royal Mint
will participate in this commemoration with the issue of some
collector coins inspired by Cervantes’ masterpiece.

Dear World Money Fair visitors,
Tradition und Innovation bestimmen das diesjährige
Ausgabeprogramm. Wohl einer der am meisten verbreiteten Bräuche der Schweiz ist der Alpabzug nach
der Sömmerung des Viehs. Dafür werden die Tiere
sauber geputzt und vielerorts kunstvoll mit Blumen
und grossen Treicheln geschmückt. Der Alpabzug ist
häufig auch Anlass für ein Volksfest, umrahmt von
Ländlermusik, Alphornblasen und Fahnenschwingen.
Ebenso volkstümlich ist die Gestaltung der Bimetallmünze in Form eines typischen Scherenschnitts. Ganz
der Innovation verpflichtet, ist dagegen das Schweizer
Luftfahrtprojekt Solar Impulse. Die Besonderheiten
des solarbetriebenen Flugzeugs sind seine riesigen
Dimensionen und sein extrem geringes Gewicht,
die es ihm ermöglichen, ohne Treibstoff zu fliegen,
vielleicht um die ganze Welt. Die Silbermünze der
Swissmint unterstreicht die Bedeutung dieses abenteuerlichen Projekts. Eine weitere Silbermünze feiert
das 1500-jährige Bestehen der einst vom heiligen
Burgunderkönig Sigismund gegründeten Abtei SaintMaurice. Die ersten drei Prägungen gelangten am
22. Januar 2015 zur Ausgabe.

Tradition und Innovation. Während sich das althergebrachte Spiel kaum verändert hat, ist das Material, das
dabei zum Einsatz gelangt, auf dem neusten Stand
der Technik. Die auf der Goldmünze «2000 Jahre
Aventicum» abgebildete Goldbüste von Marc Aurel
ist eines der bedeutendsten Kunstwerke der Schweiz
und das wohl wichtigste Fundstück aus der unter
römischer Herrschaft stehenden Hauptstadt der Helvetier. Die prächtige Goldschmiedearbeit aus dem 2. Jh. n. Chr.
mag auch heute noch zu beeindrucken.

most common customs is bringing the cattle down
from Alpine pastures at the end of the summer. The
herds are cleaned up and in many places artfully
adorned with flowers and large cow bells. This descent from Alpine pastures is often also an occasion
for a fair featuring folk music, Alpine horn-blowing and flag-swinging. Just as traditional is the bimetallic coin design in the form of a typical paper
cut-out. The Swiss aviation project Solar Impulse,
on the other hand, is shaped entirely by innovation.

What makes this solar-powered aircraft special is its
huge size but yet extremely light weight, enabling
it to fly without fuel, perhaps all around the world.

Abbey founded by the canonised King Sigismund
of Burgundy. The first three coins were issued on
22 January 2015.
Sports of Switzerland» series is dedicated to the
Swiss sport Hornussen. This age-old sport combines tradition and innovation. While the traditional sport itself has barely changed, the material used represents cutting-edge technology. The
gold bust of Marcus Aurelius illustrated on the
gold coin «2,000 years of Aventicum» is one of
Switzerland‘s most important works of art and
the most important find from the capital city of
the Helvetii under Roman rule. The
marvellous gold work dating from the
second century AD is still impressive
even today. The issue date for these
coins is 7 May 2015.

Das Berliner Münzkabinett ist als eine der größten numismatischen Sammlungen weltweit bekannt. Weniger vertraut sind aber viele mit dem
Münzkabinett als Aufbewahrungsort und auch
Ausstellungsort von Medaillen. Vom Beginn der
Gattung in der Renaissance bis in unsere Jahre ist
das Sammelgebiet dabei gespannt. Ein natürlicher Schwerpunkt liegt auf Medaillen aus Berlin
und Brandenburg, die preußische Geschichte
durch die Darstellung von Personen, Gebäuden
und Ereignissen illustrieren. Neben der reichen
Sammlung an Medaillen besitzt das Berliner
Münzkabinett aber auch eine große Anzahl an Modellen für Medaillen. Diese Modelle aus Holz, Stein
oder auch Wachs können einen interessanten Einblick in die Entwurfsarbeit und den Herstellungsprozess dieser Gattung geben.
The Münzkabinett of the Staatliche Museen zu
Berlin is known as one of the most important collections of coins worldwide. That it is also a place
for collecting and exhibiting medals is not known
to many. The collection comprises medals from
the beginning of medal art in renaissance times
to our days. A main focus of the collection is of
course medals from Berlin and Brandenburg,
which illustrate Prussian history through the
depiction of individuals, buildings and events.
­
­Besides a rich assemblage of medals the Münzkabinett owns also a large number of models for
medals. These models made out of wood, stone
or wax can give us impressive insights to the
­design and execution of this genre.

endet mit 258 russischen Münzen, das Feinste
vom Feinen. Es dürfte also durchaus den einen
oder anderen Rekordpreis geben.
Soll man einzelne Stücke aus der Menge des Bemerkenswerten hervorheben, gerät man ins Stocken,
denn zu viele sind es, die sich in den Vordergrund
drängen. Beginnt man mit der Sammlung Horn,
muss man zunächst die Kombination von großer
Seltenheit und prachtvoller Erhaltung erwähnen,
die auf die meisten Stücke zutrifft. Nehmen wir zum
Beispiel den Speciestaler von 1755, den Friedrich
II., der Große, zu Handelszwecken prägen ließ. Nur
16 Stücke überlebten. Dieses ist ein Prachtexemplar in fast Stempelglanz (Taxe: 40.000 Euro).
Und damit verlassen wir die Sammlung Horn, bleiben aber in Altdeutschland und stehen schon wieder vor der Qual der Wahl. Da gäbe es das bayerische 8 Dukaten-Stück von 1598 auf die Huldigung
Maximilians I. (Taxe: 50.000 Euro) oder die Probe
zum Bremer 5 Mark Stück 1904 (Taxe: 30.000
­Euro). Und das ist bei weitem nicht alles!
Denn jetzt geht es erst ins Ausland. Hier finden
sich mehrere bemerkenswerte Serien und Sammlungen. Großbritannien ist zur Zeit ein besonders
beliebtes Sammelgebiet und vor allem die Großgoldmünzen erzielen schwindelerregende Preise.

a collection of early American gold coins. The final
lot of the auction consists of 258 Russian coins, all
of them exquisite and sought-after pieces. Several lots in the auction are very likely to fetch record
prices.
One really hesitates to pick out single pieces from
the sheer quantity of remarkable items, as there are
just too many pushing to the fore. Looking at the
Horn collection, the combination of special rareness
and very fine condition, true of most pieces, draws
the attention in the first place. For instance, the speciestaler minted in 1755 under Frederick II the Great
for trade purposes. Only 16 of these pieces are
known to have survived. The one to be auctioned is
a showpiece in almost brilliant uncirculated condition (estimated at 40,000 euro).
On leaving the Horn collection, we remain in the
area of old Germany for a while and again are spoilt
for choice, as several remarkable series and collection are on offer. There is a piece of 8 dukaten from
Bavaria, struck in 1598 on the homage of Maximilian I (estimated at 50,000 euro) or the sample for the
Bremen 5 mark coin from 1904 (estimated at 30,000
euro). And that‘s not even the half of it!
Let‘s look beyond Germany now. Various remarkable series and collections are up for sale in this

Deshalb wird es spannend, wenn die Auktion zu
der Serie 5 Guineas-Stücke kommt, darunter die
äußerst seltene Probe zum 5 Guineas-Stück 1773
für George III. (Taxe: 100.000 Euro).
Auch für das Königreich Polen werden Stücke von
größter Seltenheit offeriert. So zum Beispiel ein
halber Portugalöser zu 5 Dukaten aus dem Jahr
1622 (665, vz, Taxe: 80.000 Euro). Und das ist nur
ein Stück aus dem riesigen Angebot der Raritäten: Von den 49 Stücken haben 23 eine Schätzung
im fünfstelligen Bereich!
Dagegen ist die kleine Partie von frühen Goldmünzen der USA geradezu günstig, und das, obwohl es kaum Münzen gibt, bei denen mehr Bilder im Kopf aufblitzen. Die Golddollars sind nämlich Zeugnisse der verschiedenen Goldrushs: Erst
des Goldrauschs von North Carolina 1799, dann
des Goldrauschs von Georgia 1828. Am bekanntesten wurden natürlich die Prägungen aus Kalifornien. Ab 200 Euro kann man mitbieten, auch
wenn die Spitzenstücke, ein 10 Dollar von 1849
ausgegeben von der Miners Bank in San Francisco
(Taxe: 20.000 Euro) und ein 5 Dollar der Mormonen von 1860 aus Salt Lake City (Taxe: 35.000 ­Euro)

are fetching top prices. Therefore it will sure get
exciting when the bidding for the series of the
1773 5 guinea coins of George III begins (estimated at 100,000 euro).
From the Kingdom of Poland, items of extreme
rarity are on offer, as well. For instance, a half portugaleser at 5 dukaten from 1622 (665, XF, estimated at 80,000 euro). And that is just one of the
lots from a huge offer of rarities: Twenty-three
pieces out of 49 were estimated at five-digit
prices!
Compared to these, the small lot of early U.S. gold
coins is a downright bargain, although there are
barely any coins invoking as many associations as
these gold dollars that are witnesses of various
gold rushes – the 1799 North Carolina gold rush,
followed by the Georgia gold rush in 1828. Nevertheless, the dollars from California gained the widest popularity. You can start bidding from 200
euro, although the top items – a 10 dollar coin issued in 1849 by the Miners Bank of San Francisco
(estimated price: EUR 20,000) and a Mormon 5
dollar coin issued in 1860 in Salt Lake City (esti-

eigentlich sehr gut. Was man aber nur durch aufmerksame Lektüre des Auktionskatalogs erfahren
kann, sind die vielen interessanten Geschichten,
die diese Münzen und Medaillen erzählen. Denn
letztendlich verkauft ein Münzhändler nie nur ein
Stück Metall, sondern immer die Geschichte, die
mit dem Metall in Verbindung steht.

Die Entstehung des Geldes ist schnell erklärt.
­Irgendwann in grauer Vorzeit erkannten die Menschen, dass sie sich durch Arbeitsteilung besser
stellen. Ihre arbeitsteilige Organisation machte
dann das Tauschen notwendig. Man tauschte zunächst direkt: Sachgut gegen Sachgut. Doch die
Menschen fanden bald heraus, dass
es besser geht: Man tauschte
sein Gut zunächst gegen
ein indirektes Tauschmittel,
und
letzteres
tauschte man gegen
dasjenige Gut, das
man zu halten
wünschte. Das indirekte Tauschmittel,
das allgemein akzeptiert war, wurde
zum Geld.
How money originated is quickly explained. One
day in time immemorial, humans realized that
they were better off when they divided the work
among them. Having organized the division of labor, trade became a necessity. In the beginning,
people would barter goods, directly exchanging
one for another. But they soon realized that there was a better
way: One first exchanged
one’s goods for an indirect barter good which,
in turn, was exchanged for the good
one wanted to obtain. This indirect
medium of exchange which was
generally accepted
became money.
Damit ein Gut zu Geld
werden kann, muss es bereits einen Tauschwert haben: Einen Tauschwert, der sich
allein auf seine nicht-monetären Eigenschaften gründet. Das erklärt auch, warum in der
Währungsgeschichte die Menschen, wann immer
sie konnten, Edelmetalle als Geld gewählt haben.
Edelmetalle weisen die physischen Eigenschaften
auf, die gutes Geld auszeichnen: Sie sind knapp,
homogen, lagerfähig, unverderblich, teilbar, prägbar, transportabel und werden allgemein wertgeschätzt. Das trifft vor allem auf das Gold zu.

an exchange value – an intrinsic worth based only on its
non-monetary properties. This is also
the reason why people, whenever they could,
have chosen precious metals to use as money –
throughout the history of currency. Precious metals have all physical properties that define good
money. They are scarce, homogenous, storable,
durable, divisible, mintable, portable, and they
are in general highly valued. First and foremost,
all of this is true for gold.

was an obstacle to these strategies.

carried negative implications for those who had
relied on the promise that the non-backed money
would keep its value. Sooner or later, inflation
was brought about, a means adopted by governments especially when debt was getting too high.

Krugerrand - Pure Heritage
The Krugerrand is the world’s original gold bullion coin and was
launched in 1967 as a vehicle for the private ownership of gold.
With more than 60 million sold, the Krugerrand is the most widely
held gold bullion coin in the world.
Production levels of Krugerrands significantly varied during the
last 48 years. During the period 1967-1969 around 40,000 coins
were minted each year. Over one million coins were produced
in 1974 and in 1978 when an absolute record of six million
Krugerrands were produced.
In the period from 1985 to 2004 Krugerrand production and
sales were less than 100’000 per annum, and in 2005 the
Krugerrand underwent a revival and it has reclaimed its position
as one of the leading gold bullion coins in the world.
The Krugerrand has no face value, and its value is measured in
ounces of pure gold. It’s actual weight is 1.0909 troy ounces. It
is minted from gold alloy that is 91.67% pure (22 karats), and
the one ounce coin the coin contains exactly one troy ounce of
gold. The remaining 8.33% of the coin’s weight (2.826 g) is

Preisverleihungen und Medailleneditionen.

Stand auf der World Money Fair Berlin vertreten

hand the research on the art of historic medals
and on the other the promotion of contemporary
medals. The DGMK creates a meeting place for
artists and art dealers, scholars and collectors of
medals. Among the activities of the DGMK are exhibitions and publications, talks, award ceremonies and the issue of medal editions.
2015 for the first time the DGMK will present its
own stand at the World Money Fair Berlin. Come

ductile the blank behave, the less the minting pressure
could be or the higher the relief height could be choosen.
Coin blanks in hd-type are new and significantly more
ductile compared to normal blanks.

hd-blanks could be flat or either be profiled. The
shape and the geometry of the profile could be a
pyramid or a cone or a spherical segment, towards an
individual profile with its shape corresponding to the
motif of the coin to be minted. The profile as well will
reduce the minting pressure because of less material
has to be plastically moved when minting.
