George Struckman is elected the first Village President. History 1892 Residents approve the purchase of land for a municipal cemetery. Bartlett Cemetery is dedicated in October. 1908 August Pottratz is the first resident in Bartlett to buy a car. 1925 Residents begin giving up their backyard wells and pumps for the new public water system. 1938 The first Firemen’s Festival is held. This popular event continued for 31 years, ending in 1969. 1941 The Village Board forms a National Defense Council just before the United States enters World War II. 1947 Log Cabin is built in Bartlett Park through the combined efforts of civic groups. 2014-15 Plan vs8.krn_2014-2015 Plan.qxd 5/12/2014 10:28 AM Page 3 1959 An extensive business licensing effort begins, regulating gas stations, dance studios, beauty parlors, ice cream shops, motels and more. 1976 The 9-1-1 emergency response system is implemented. 1978 To keep the property from becoming a high density subdivision, residents vote 1,129 to 301 to purchase Bartlett Hills Golf Course. 1984 Bartlett begins recycling. 1986 The Board approves a TIF district for downtown Bartlett. 1988 The Village annexes land for the first time in Kane County. Bartlett is now 15.5 square miles in size and sits in three counties. 1991 Bartlett celebrates 100 years of incorporation with a festival, a parade and ball. 1996 Bartlett’s first canine officer is sworn in. 1998 Wastewater treatment plant is named for Bartlett’s first PW Director Orlo Benson. 2014-15 Plan vs8.krn_2014-2015 Plan.qxd 5/12/2014 10:28 AM Page 4 2001 The grand opening of Brewster Creek Business Park, which will cover 670 acres when fully built out. 2002 The first baseball game is played at Glen A. Koehler Fields. 2005 Bartlett dedicates its new Town Center fountain and first piece of public art. 2005 Veterans and Harmony friends dedicate the flagpole at the site of Bartlett’s future Veterans Memorial. 2006 The new Bartlett Village Hall is completed. 2007 Metra’s new 3,136 square foot downtown Bartlett station opens to riders.
