MISSION STATEMENT / DECLARACIÓN DEL MISIÓN
The mission of our community is rooted in Jesus the
Christ. This mission is to hear, respond to and proclaim the
word of God as found in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.
Through the Sunday Eucharist we are called to ongoing
conversion and personal spiritual formation. As a community,
we are challenged to provide mutual support for a Catholic
Christian lifestyle and are empowered to use our gifts to
minister to the needs of others. We commit ourselves to
the beatitudes, to the spiritual and corporal works of
mercy, and to minister to the larger communities in which
we live and work. We respect the dignity of every person,
at all ages and stages of life.
We hand on our Catholic heritage through catechesis,
worship, service and witness.
In carrying out this mission we further the kingdom of
God in our midst.
La misión de nuestra comunidad tiene su raíz en
Jesucristo. Esta misión es escuchar, responder y proclamar
la palabra de Dios que se encuentra en las escrituras
Hebreas y Cristianas.
Por la Eucaristía del Domingo, estamos llamados a una

Twenty-eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time
VENGAN A LA FIESTA
COME TO THE FEAST
“On this mountain, the Lord of hosts /
will provide for all peoples / a feast of rich
food and choice wines” (Isaiah 25:6).
That’s what Isaiah tells us today. God is
putting together a huge party for “all peoples,” to “wipe
away / the tears from every face” (Isaiah 25:8).
And what does Jesus tell us? The reign of God, he says,
“may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for
his son” (Matthew 22:2). When the guests didn’t come,
the king had his servants go out “into the main roads
and invite to the feast whomever you find” (Matthew
22:9). We are called to deliver that invitation.
One of the themes woven into today’s liturgy is that
of divine generosity. Asleep to reality, people often
think they have “earned” what they have. In our better
moments, though, we know that all our gifts—even
the spiritual gifts—come through God’s generosity. Our
vocation is to invite people, to remind them the tickets
aren’t for sale. We can only show up and say thank you.

“El Señor de los Ejércitos preparará para
todos los pueblos en este cerro, una comida
con jugosos asados y buenos vinos” (Isaías
25:6). Esto es lo que Isaías nos dice hoy. Dios
está organizando una inmensa fiesta para
“todos los pueblos”, para “enjugar las lágrimas de todos
los rostros”.
¿Y qué es lo que Jesús nos dice? “El reino de Dios”, él
dice, es como “lo que le sucedió a un rey que celebró las
bodas de su hijo” (Mateo 22:2). Cuando los invitados no
acudieron, el rey mandó a sus sirvientes a que fueran “a
las esquinas de las calles y conviden a la boda a todos los
que encuentren” (Mateo 22:9). Nosotros somos llamados
a distribuir esta invitación.
Uno de los temas entrelazado con la liturgia de hoy
es el referente a la generosidad divina. Ausente de la
realidad, la gente a menudo asume que ha “ganado” lo
que tiene. En nuestros mejores momentos, sin embargo,
somos conscientes de que todos nuestros dones, incluyendo
los espirituales, provienen de la generosidad de Dios.
Nuestra misión es invitar a la gente, recordarles que las
entradas no están a la venta. Lo único que podemos
hacer es acudir y dar las gracias.

the Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel area. A donation of $1 per
candle is being requested. We ask that you properly
dispose of the spent match in the container provided as
we have had some incidents with the match stick causing
unsafe flames. Thank you for your contribution and for
helping maintain the cleanliness of our sacred place of
worship.

incidentes donde se ha dejado el cerillo con la veladora
y se ha prendido el plástico causando fuego peligroso.

P ASTOR
Apreciados Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
Today’s readings remind us that each one of us are called to
follow Jesus Christ. The immensely generous wedding banquet
and the dazzling feast on the mountain top (Heaven in both
instances) evoked in the Gospel of Matthew and the First
Reading of the Prophet Isaiah are profoundly beautiful. All
peoples are invited as long as they have properly prepared
(or dressed, that is, are without sin) to enter the feast celebration
in the new Heaven. A Heaven that is not just for the “chosen
people”, but those that live in faith with the risen Lord. God,
through Jesus Christ, is our salvation and the feast is our
heavenly reward. But like any reward we must be worthy of
such an exalted gift of grace. How do we earn such an honor?
We do so by our faith, our works, our love, and by the total
dedication and commitment to the redemptive gift of Christ.
When we present ourselves at the banquet of God, we must
be properly adorned by our seeking true forgiveness for our
sins and in complete reconciliation with Christ. Only then can
we wear the garments required of us by God in His Kingdom.
We do not do this by “punching our church attendance card
for Sunday Mass ,” but through the simple living of our
sacramental life, our profound actions and decisions we
make to live in harmony with each other, to support each
other, to care for each other, and by unconditional faith and
sanctification with Christ in His Church.
All this sounds so very nice and easy to do. We learn from
Saint Paul that he was able to bear all good and all bad things
only by his unconditional resolve (faith) to love and serve the
risen Christ. With Christ, all is possible and Christ is all we need.
So like Saint Paul, let us not try to control our call to serve Him
but let us surrender to the grace and the goodness of Christ no
matter how difficult our tasks, burdens, and crosses may feel.
The Lord hears our prayers and our cries for help or mercy, and
He will give us that which he deems right for us in this life and
the next. Remember we must earn the right to be called by
Christ to our heavenly home and the feast of Heaven. Let us
not ignore the grace of God as the sacred writers mentioned in
the readings today. Seek Christ no matter what station of life
you are in. We have been blessed and called to serve; at the
heavenly banquet of God here on earth, we will all be rewarded
for our faithful and continuous work that we do for the Lord.
Next week on Saturday, October 18th, the parish will hold its
Annual Craft Fair, and I invite all of you to attend and support
the parish and the vendors who will be selling some unique and
lovely artistic gift items.

Las lecturas de hoy nos recuerdan que cada uno de
nosotros estamos llamados a seguir a Jesucristo. El banquete
de bodas inmensamente generoso y la fiesta deslumbrante en
la cima de la montaña (el Cielo en ambos casos) evocadas en el
Evangelio de Mateo y la Primera Lectura del Profeta Isaías
son profundamente bellas. Todos los pueblos están invitados,
siempre y cuando se hayan preparado adecuadamente (o vestido,
es decir, estar sin pecado) para entrar en la fiesta en el nuevo
cielo. Un cielo que no es sólo para el "pueblo elegido", pero
los que viven en la fe con el Señor resucitado. Dios, por medio
de Jesucristo, es nuestra salvación y la fiesta es nuestra recompensa
celestial. Pero al igual que cualquier recompensa que debemos
ser dignos de un regalo tan lleno de la gracia divina. ¿Cómo nos
ganamos tal honor? Lo hacemos por nuestra fe, nuestras
obras, nuestro amor, y por la entrega y dedicación total al don
redentor de Cristo. Cuando nos presentamos en el banquete
de Dios, debemos adornarnos adecuadamente por nuestra
búsqueda verdadera del perdón por nuestros pecados y en la
completa reconciliación con Cristo. Sólo así podemos usar las
prendas que se requieren de nosotros por Dios en Su Reino. No
hacemos esto solamente "con nuestra tarjeta de asistencia en
la Misa dominical," sino a través de las acciones y decisiones
simples, pero profundas que hacemos en nuestra vida sacramental
para vivir en armonía unos con otros, para apoyarnos mutuamente,
para cuidar a los demás, y por la fe incondicional y la santificación
con Cristo dentro de su Iglesia.
Todo esto suena muy agradable y fácil de hacer. Aprendemos
de Saint Paul que él era capaz de soportar todas las cosas
buenas y malas de todo sólo por su voluntad incondicional
(la fe) para amar y servir a Cristo resucitado. Con Cristo, todo
es posible y Cristo es todo lo que necesitamos. Así como San
Pablo, no tratemos de controlar nuestro llamado para servirle
pero vamos a rendirnos a la gracia y la bondad de Cristo, no
importa lo difícil que nuestras tareas, cargas y cruces puedan
sentir. Porque el Señor escucha nuestras oraciones, peticiones
de ayuda o la misericordia, y Él nos dará lo que él considera
correcto para nosotros en esta vida y la siguiente. Recuerde
que hay que ganarse el derecho a ser llamado por Cristo a
nuestro hogar celestial y la fiesta del Cielo. No ignoremos la
gracia de Dios como los Sagrados Escritores mencionan en las
Sagradas Escrituras de hoy. Busca a Cristo, no importa el estado de
vida en que te encuentras. Hemos sido bendecidos y llamados
para servir en el banquete celestial de Dios aquí en la tierra.
Todos seremos recompensados por nuestro fiel y trabajo
constante que hacemos para el Señor.
La próxima semana el Sábado 18 de Octubre, la parroquia
celebrará su anual Feria de Artesanías, y los invito a todos a
asistir y apoyar a la parroquia y los vendedores que venden
las mercancías. Algunos artículos son únicos y encantadores.

Vigésimo Octavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The confessional is a familiar setting in literature and
drama. Everyone from Doestoevsky and Shakespeare
down the line to Seinfeld has used the sacrament to
tragic or comic effect or to reveal aspects of character
otherwise hidden. All of this theater, from world classics
to slapstick, has had a numbing effect on our own
expectations, and has skewed how the culture looks at
us and our struggle with sin and forgiveness, hope and
healing.
Yet the artists are on to something. The reconciliation
chapel is a place where hearts are laid bare, where
honesty is the watchword, and people confess their
deepest needs. It is also a place of rebirth, or at least
realignment. It is, like the baptismal font, a place where
something dies, and where something else is born.
Today, although literature has barely caught up, the
place is usually not the dark and gloomy cabinet of old;
rather it is a chapel that speaks of peace, serenity, and
the comfort of a welcome home. People in one parish
were astonished recently to see their children skipping
with delight as they left the place of their first confession.
We have to wait a bit for world literature to catch up
with this reality, but at least we can experience the joy
of penance, the thrill of a new beginning, the assurance
of God’s love.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
La Virgen María tiene siglos de estar apareciéndose
a los cristianos. Aún antes de que fuese asunta al cielo,
ella ya se le había aparecido al apóstol Santiago en
Zaragoza, España. Según una antigua leyenda, Santiago
llegó a tierra española en el año 40 para predicar el
Evangelio. Tuvo poco éxito y desanimado pensaba
sacudirse de los pies el polvo de aquella tierra y buscar
convertir otras gentes. Mientras estaba en oración,
María, la madre de Jesús, se le apareció con palabras
de consuelo, ánimo y un pequeño obsequio. Le dio una
imagen de ella misma sobre un pilar y con el Niño Jesús
en brazos.
En esa tierra ella pidió la construcción de un templo
donde ella misma sería altar para la gloria de Dios.
Santiago mismo construyó la primera iglesia donde hoy
se encuentra una gran basílica en honor de Nuestra
Señora del Pilar. En el siglo XVIII, el Papa Clemente XII
declaró el 12 de octubre como su fiesta en memoria de
la llegada de los europeos al continente americano. De
María vienen los principios del Día de la Raza.
