Page Three Weekly Reflection GOD'S WORD TODAY The teenager with the starring role in the school Christmas play moaned and sighed to herself as her dad arrived late. Again. A litany of thoughts crossed her mind: "He missed my solo! His work is more important than me. He doesn't love me!" It was when the teenage star took her bows before the admiring audience that it all came clear. Her dad, with both feet propped on their heels, cheered the loudest, but his daughter couldn't take her eyes off the holes in the soles of each shoe, the ones he hadn't replaced for years. And she, in her beautiful gown and expensively designed hair, finally realized, "He did it all for me." Your love for your family is enduring, even when it goes unnoticed. Take some time for one another. Show honor and respect. As Paul wrote to the Colossians, always be thankful. Let Christ's message find a home in your home If you are reading this, there is a good chance that you meet the definition of a "holy family," given that this may be at least the second Mass of at least four that you and your family will have participated in over a very short period of time. Meeting a religious obligation, like attending Mass on Sundays and holy days, is not the only criterion for a holy family, of course, but as today's Gospel reminds us, it's one of them. The presentation of Jesus in the Temple portrays his parents as devout Jews who took him to Jerusalem as the Law of Moses required. According to the Law, the mother who gives birth to a boy is not to touch anything sacred or enter the Temple for forty days. At the end of this time she is to offer a year-old lamb and a pigeon or turtledove as an atonement for sins. Mary offered a pair of birds, as was permitted a person who could not afford a lamb. Many people have asked me about the memorial Mass for her soul because they could not participate at the funeral in Poland. For this reason on January 5th in our Church, St. Colette, at 7:00PM we will have a Memorial Mass for her soul. This Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Andrew Wypych. The Mass will be bilingual: English and Polish and after the Mass their will be refreshments in Halpin Hall. Anyone who would like to participate in this Mass is invited and welcome to do so. May her soul rest in peace, Rev. Msgr. Peter Galek Page Five Hispanic Ministry A sincere thanks to the community for the cooperation we received from the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. From the smallest to the most full of experience for their presence, prayers and hard work. Special thanks to the family who donated the dancing and music for our celebration.. Many thanks to the priests: Father Brian Simpson for his support in our activities, especially with the Bilingual Blessing before heading on the pilgrimage. Also it was an honor that our Pastor Rev. Msgr. Peter Galek accompanied us in the pilgrimage to De Plaines, together with his family. We also want to thank Father Lalo Maritnez for celebrating the mass with us . God bless you all now ad always from the depths of our hearts and may Christ child be born in each of your hearts this Christmas, for the new year and the rest of your lives. From a tax perspective, gifts of securities, real estate or other assets that have gone up in value are the hands-down winners. Why? Because donors receive a double tax benefit: they can deduct the full fair market value of their appreciated assets – if owned more than one year – and they save again by avoiding all capital gains taxes on their “paper profit.” Also keep in mind that you can give appreciated securities right now and still keep the right to income from the assets for as long as you live. We get the use of the property only after your death. But you receive an income tax deduction this year for the value of what you have given to us. And you minimize capital gains tax on your paper profit. Please call Patti Condon in the Archdiocesan Office of Stewardship and Development at 312-534-7911; she would be happy to discuss your gift in greater detail. It’s amazing how long we can hold a grudge or be angry with someone. Please remember these intentions in your prayers, especially when you pray the Rosary. FIRST FRIDAY HOLY ADORATION EACH MONTH AT ST. COLETTE PARISH FROM 8:30 A.M. UNTIL 5:45 P.M. While meditating on the Christmas story, the story of the three kings started to turn over and over in my thoughts. There was a very large star that was shining in the east. The three kings put down their lives to follow that star. And when they arrived at their destination, they found a beautiful mother and father in a small stable with a newborn baby. They were men of wealth and learning and when they arrived at the scene perhaps they were struck at the simplicity and quiet holiness of the scene. They then presented their gifts to the newborn as they knew that the star signified the birth of a leader, a king. Well, here it is, 2014 Christmas and New Years ahead and my question to myself is, can I put everything down to follow a star? I am asking myself, am I able to stop like the three kings did and take time to follow Christ and bring him a gift. There are jobs, sometimes two jobs, sports events, practices, exercise classes, performances, music lessons, family events, friends to text, and time to rest. Do I scrimp on routine prayers, prayers as a family, rosary time in our home? These activities cannot be cut short and neglected. In order to grow in our relationship with God we must be willing to put down our life to follow the star. To truly grow in our relationship with Christ we must make room for Jesus, by putting aside some of the extras in our life and by taking time to go to the manger. We can bring the baby Jesus a gift of ourselves at Holy Adoration. Baby Jesus was born for us and is with us now. Come let us adore Him, Christ our Lord. On the first Friday of each month Holy Adoration is held at St. Colette from 8:30 a.m. until 5:45 p.m. Bring the kids if they are home on break or stop by on your way home from work. Follow the star. Venid adoremos, a Cristo nuestro Señor. Padre Nuestro, Ave María y Gloria tres veces. Oracion tomada de: Catholic Family Handbook, The by Rev. Page Nine SHARE FAITH CORNER THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH O Jesus, our most loving Redeemer, Who having come to enlighten the world, with Your teaching and example, willed to pass the greater part of Your life in humility and subjection to Mary and Joseph in the poor home of Nazareth, thus sanctifying the Family that was to be an example for all Christian families, graciously receive our family as it dedicates and consecrates itself to You this day. Defend us, guard us and establish among us Your holy fear, true peace and concord in Christian love: in order that by conforming ourselves to the divine pattern of Your Family we may be able, all of us without exception, to attain to eternal happiness. Mary, dear Mother of Jesus and Mother of us, by your kind intercession make this our humble offering acceptable in the sight of Jesus, and obtain for us His graces and blessings. Saint Joseph, most holy Guardian of Jesus and Mary, assist us by your prayers in all our spiritual and temporal necessities; that we may be able to praise our divine Savior Jesus, together with Mary and you, for all eternity.
