Christmas 2014
Dear Parishioners,
Christmas is a special time for us – a time to recognize
the love and goodness of God; a time to know that
Christ has come among us; a time to remember that God
now shares the same joys and sorrows that we do; a
time to rejoice in the hope of eternal life that Jesus
brings to each of us.
We welcome all of you, those who celebrate with us
daily and weekly, and those who have been away for a
while. We invite each of you to celebrate with us, and
we ask that you please bring a friend to celebrate with
us as well.
Thank you for all the kindness, support, encouragement
and generosity you’ve shown during the year. May the
newborn Christ Child bless you, your families and your
homes.

Christmas is upon us, and once again we ask for your
help to make our church beautiful by making an offering for flowers in memory of a loved one. The offering
is $10. Please use a plain envelope and mark it
“Christmas Flowers”. The names of those memorialized and the donor will be published in the bulletin.
FAMILY CHRISTMAS EVE SUGGESTIONS
1. Plan a birthday party for the Baby Jesus. Have a
birthday cake, napkins, balloons and be sure to sing
“Happy Birthday” to Jesus.
2. Turn off all the lights in the house or apartment
except the tree lights. Each family member carry a
small lit candle and choose someone to carry the
Baby Jesus. Have a procession all through the
house singing “Silent Night”. Then place Jesus in
the manger under the tree. Christmas morning,
presents can go under the tree.
3. Darken the house or apartment and light one
candle. Read aloud the Christmas story from Luke
2:1:20 and sing carols.
4. Burn a candle in the front window of the house and
stay up until it burns out on its own. Started in
Ireland many years ago, this custom is a welcome
to the Christ Child.
NEW DONATION ENVELOPE SYSTEM
As began last year at this time, donation envelopes are
not mailed to one’s home address, but are available in a
complete boxed set, to be picked up here at church. All
“registered and contributing” parishioners are invited to
pick up a year’s worth of envelopes in a boxed set. The
box contains all the envelopes one will need from Jan.
11, 2015 to January 3, 2016, including Special Diocesan collections and holy days.
We have eliminated from the “active” parishioner list
anyone who has not used the envelopes even once during the past 12 months. The boxed envelopes are distributed every weekend after Masses, in the auditorium.
The boxes are arranged alphabetically, facilitating distribution. Please be patient - we are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
Navidad 2014
Queridos feligreses,
Navidad es un momento especial para nosotros – un
momento para reconocer el amor y la bondad de Dios;

“THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS”
- A religious significance?
From 1558 until 1829 the Catholics of
England were forbidden by law to practice their faith. Catholics devised symbolic songs to teach their children. One
of these was “The Twelve Days of
Christmas.”
The twelve days are December 25 to
January 6. God gives Christians gifts
on each of the twelve days.
The first gift is a partridge in a pear
tree. The bird stands for Christ, who
gathers his young under his wings.
God’s first gift is Jesus.
Two turtle doves represents the sacrifice of a Jewish
family at the birth of a son. Our sacrifice is the divine
liturgy.
Three French hens symbolizes the three gifts of the
Magi or the three gifts of faith, hope, and charity.
Four callings birds makes us think of the four evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
Five golden rings suggests the first five books of the
Old Testament, the “Torah”.
Six geese-a-laying suggests the six days of the week
when humanity labors.
Seven swans-a-swimming reminds us of the seven gifts
of the Holy Spirit.
Eight maids-a-milking represents the eight beatitudes.
Nine ladies dancing recalls the fruits of the Holy Spirit
in Galatians 5:22.
Ten lords-a-leaping represents the Ten Commandments.
Eleven pipers piping refers to the eleven apostles, without Judas, who betrayed Jesus.
Finally, twelve drummers drumming reminds us of the
twelve articles of faith in the Nicene Creed.
NEW OUTDOOR “STABLE”
Thanks to Eagle Scout Gustavo Andres RomeroTlaczani of Troop 390 who earlier this year designed
and built the new wooden outdoor “stable” on the North
Garden lawn, as his Eagle Scout project. A job well
done!
BLESSING OF THE FAMILY CHRISTMAS TREE
Leader: Wonder-God, Creator of all that is beautiful,
send down your blessing on this tree and all who gather
around it. We wait for Christ’s coming again in our
world, in our family, and in our hearts. Come, Lord
Jesus, bring our family peace. Come and dwell in our
home and in our hearts.
All: We ask this in the name of Christ, your Son and our
Brother. Amen
ALONE FOR CHRISTMAS?
Try these ideas for your own personal festive season:
Keep up family traditions, even if you make them simpler.
Put up a tree, make cookies, attend Mass.
Watch for special events and invite a friend to join you.
Reach out to others. Volunteer time with organizations
who help the needy at holidays. Help elderly neighbors
with Christmas preparations.
Accept invitations and send a few yourself.
Do something new that you’ve always wanted to do.
Start a journal, try a new hobby, go on retreat.
Treat yourself. Eat the food you like, get up and go to
bed when you like, and buy yourself a present.
Remember God loves you very much and he promises
peace and comfort to all who trust him.
CHURCH BULLETIN BOARD
“The voices in my head may not be real,
but they have some good ideas!”
CATHOLIC CHARITIES CHRISTMAS
COLLECTION
Bishop DiMarzio invites all to join him in this year’s
Annual Catholic Charities Collection. The collection
takes place at all Christmas Masses. Please return the
special Catholic Charities envelope from your envelope
packet with your gift. If you did not receive a printed

and mark it for “Catholic Charities”. Bishop DiMarzio
urges all to join in sharing God’s love with families and
children in need by giving generously to this year’s
Charities Christmas collection.
