Derrumbando Fronteras ¿Cómo es la cultura Americana?

Eleanor Roosevelt High School Spanish Three Señor Cacioppo Fall 2010 Derrumbando Fronteras ¿Cómo es la cultura Americana? Course Description Spanish Three gives you the opportunity to use Spanish to make sense of and explain the world around you. We will examine contemporary American culture and try to figure out what it means to be an American today, particularly with the influx of immigrants—many of whom are Spanish-‐
speaking. We will explore the current state of music, movies, sports, fashion, literature, and other aspects of American life in an attempt to identify and explain what is really important to us. We will, of course, do this while at the same time strengthening our Spanish skills in preparation for the Regents exam. Be prepared to speak exclusively in Spanish for the entire year. Materials Needed 1. Three-‐ring binder with loose-‐leaf paper and section dividers 2. Pen or pencil 3. Spanish-‐English dictionary to use at home 4. Colored pencils or crayons (optional) Grading Tests/Quizzes/Projects 65% Homework/Notebook Checks 25% Participation 10% Tests/Quizzes/Projects Written tests and quizzes will be given periodically to monitor your learning. They will be scheduled ahead of time, and I will tell you what you will be expected to know. I will also assign projects that will allow you to demonstrate your learning in various ways. You will always be given some choice about your project and will have ample time to complete it. Homework Homework will be assigned every day and will be due at the beginning of class on the due date. I do not accept late homework. Participation The only way to learn a new language is to use it as much as possible. You will be expected to speak Spanish every day. As a second-‐year Spanish student, you will work on building confidence and fluency in communication. Absences In order to do well, whether in Spanish or any other subject, you must be in class every day. When you are absent you miss out on everything that we’re doing that day, and just getting the notes from a classmate cannot make up for what you’ve missed. If you do need to be absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and to get the necessary assignments as soon as you return to school. Make-‐up work is due the day after you return. Note on the use of online translators: While students are encouraged to use bilingual dictionaries to look up individual words, it is absolutely forbidden to use websites for any kind of translation. This applies to entire sentences, short phrases, or individual words. Use of such translators will be considered cheating. (See the student handbook for school policy on academic dishonesty.) Essential Questions for Spanish Three 1. What does it mean to be part of a particular culture? 2. What does being an American mean to you, and what might it mean to someone not born in the United States? 3. How might you interact differently with someone whose culture is different from yours? Contacting Me I encourage you to be in contact with me whenever you need to be. You may email me at [email protected]. Please feel free to talk to me if you have questions or concerns. I expect you to do your best, and I will do whatever I can to help you. I am looking forward to working with you this year. Sr. Cacioppo Capítulo Uno: La música Spanish Three Course Outline A.
