Coats and Jackets Needed
The response to our annual coat drive has been wonderful, especially for men’s
and women’s jackets and dress coats. But we are still in great need of jackets and
outerwear in children and young adult sizes. Please bring donations of new or
gently-used coats and jackets, hats, scarves, and gloves to the downstairs church for
our end-of-the-month distribution. Items may be left in the designated area
downstairs during rectory hours or brought on Sundays at 4 PM when volunteers
are available to assist you.
The last day of the collection is Saturday, November 22nd, so you still have time!
As always, thank you for your gift of warmth as the temperatures drop!

Harrigan’s Pub’s Free Thanksgiving for Seniors

dinner for seniors on Thanksgiving Day at noon.
A full, sit-down meal will be served.
The Knights of Columbus is coordinating the
annual event and will provide rides if needed.

Gift for Families
The Holy Name Society, with the approval of
Msgr. Flynn, will be giving all parishioners a gift this
Christmas. It is a beautifully written and inspirational
book by Matthew Kelly titled, “Rediscovering Catholicism.”
For over a decade, the author has traveled the globe,
sharing answers and offering the truth. He’s the first to
admit, they aren’t his. They’re the ones that have been
taught by the Church since the first century. They’re the
ones that have been lived by holy and happy men,
women and children of faith since the time of Christ.
This book, in a simple, convincing, and entertaining
style, provides answers that many are looking for in
today’s world. To make sure that all our parish families
get a book, we are handing them out at Christmas
Masses and to all CCD classes and CYO members. This
exciting spiritual initiative needs your prayers of support.
More details will appear in an upcoming bulletin.
Giving Tree 2014
The Christmas season is fast approaching, and
St. Mark's Social Concerns Committee is pleased to
sponsor the Giving Tree, which provides gifts to
those who are less fortunate. Requests have come to us
from charitable agencies, such as Mercy Center,
Habcore, Madonna House, and Epiphany House.
As in prior years, the committee is enlisting the
support of St. Mark's parishioners. The response from
our parish family has always been exceptionally generous,
and we hope this year's effort will continue to show our
desire to share with others. The 2014 Giving Tree will be
set up next weekend in the vestibule. Please take an
ornament from the tree, and follow the directions listed.
(Note: Some gifts are to be wrapped and others unwrapped but
all must have their tags attached. Gift cards must also be
tagged but please do not leave them under the tree. They must
be delivered to the rectory or dropped in the rectory mail slot.)
Please be sure to attach your ornament to your gift,
and pay close attention to the return date, as many
agencies distribute their gifts

DOVES Service Trip
Are you a Catholic teen with the desire to serve
others while making new friends and enriching your
faith? Then the DOVES teen mission trip is for you!
A limited number of openings remain for the DOVES
service trip to Richmond, VA, from June 28-July 3,
2015. Students and chaperones “camp” in a local
school for the week, assisting needy residents and
community organizations with painting, gardening,
cleanup and other projects. This eighth annual trip is
open to students who will be in ninth grade or higher
by the fall of 2015. The cost is $440, including meals,

Low-Gluten Hosts
It is important to remember that when Jesus
ins tuted the Eucharist, He did it during Passover. So
when Jesus took bread, it wasn’t just any type of bread,
it was unleavened bread as used in the Passover meal.
When He took wine, it was wine (which by defini on is
fermented), not simple grape juice, also because it was
in the context of the Passover meal. If these things were
not important, it stands to reason that the Eucharist
would not have been ins tuted at that special me. The
elements were important because of the context of the
meal being eaten, and because of the future ac on of
Christ’s death and Resurrec on. So, please don’t think
that the Church is being too pharisaic by requiring that
there be some gluten in the Host so as to retain the
proper element. To be truly pharisaic about it, there
would be no compromise at all.
To provide a clear associa on, allowances are made
for use of mustum for alcoholic priests. The Church has
set the lowest limit possible to keep the elements
correct, and also to be pastoral.
The approved low-gluten hosts are made from
gela nized wheat starch and packaged in a dedicated
wheat-free / gluten-free environment. The hosts were
tested to a level of 0.01% gluten. At that level, the
lowest that could be tested, no gluten was detected.
This means that there is less than 0.01% gluten in one of
these hosts; however, it is not known how much less.
The Secretariat for the Liturgy of the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops has stated that these
meet the requirements of the Code of Canon Law and
may be validly used at Mass with permission of the
person’s pastor.
In the past, medical cer fica on and permission
jus fying the request for mustum or low-gluten Hosts
were required, but the authority to permit the lay
faithful to use mustum or low-gluten Hosts in the
recep on of Holy Communion has been delegated to
pastors under CIC 137.1. Once granted, the
Communicant may con nue to do so for as long as the
condi on persists. You can read more at: h p://

Msgr. Flynn has granted this permission but needs
your assistance in determining how to implement it.
He would like to encourage anyone who has this
condi on to help him find the best method to allow you
to fully par cipate in Communion.
OpƟons for DistribuƟng Low-Gluten Hosts at Weekend Masses
Depending on the results of this canvasing, St. Mark’s will begin one of the following distribu on methods at the
10 AM Mass on Sundays. If it is successful, it may be extended to other Masses, but ini ally this will only be offered at
the 10 AM Mass where families have expressed an urgent need.
Offer a separate Communion line for the consecrated low-gluten Hosts.
(This would require one addiƟonal Extraordinary Minister at the 10 AM Mass only for this Communion line.)
The priest celebrant would hold a special ciborium with a separate sec on for low-gluten Hosts from which the
Communicant would receive a Host.
Enter the Communion line last a er the ushers.
(This will require some iniƟal coordinaƟon. Although the ushers try to be last in line, this is not always the case.)
Instead of low-gluten Hosts, offer a separate Communion line with a chalice of the Precious Blood.
(This would require one addiƟonal Extraordinary Minister at the 10 AM Mass only for this Communion line and be
only for those who are not receiving a Host.)

It’s Never Been Known to Fail
Dear Jack —
Beginning to-day [September 9, 1945], I am going to pray for a miracle!
You said only a miracle would bring you home for Christmas. So I am starting the
54-day Rosary Novena. Everyone says it’s never been known to fail. Especially Ruth,
to whom I mentioned the Novena, saying I didn’t have the accompanying prayer,
and she sent me the leaflet down in the next mail. Why, I just can’t wait until next
Easter to see you, so maybe if you join me with just an aspiration to the Blessed
Virgin, that miracle might come our way!
Editor’s Note: In last weekend’s bulletin, we featured Jack’s story about his mother’s loving Rosary Novena.
(If you missed it, visit www.stmarkseagirt.com and click Bulletins and Old Bulletin.) This is a copy of the
original letter she wrote to Jack on the warfront. The 54-day Rosary Novena cycles through the Rosary for
27 days in request for an intention and is followed by 27 days in thanksgiving for God listening to the
heartfelt prayer. Jack estimated that his troop ship headed from the Philippines to San Francisco in
mid-October. Interestingly enough, 27 days from September 9, 1945 was October 7, 1945.

The Novena that Jack’s mother prayed is one cycle of
three 9-day Novenas followed by another cycle of three
9-day Novenas. It is said to be especially
efficacious.
Bartolo Longo went through a crisis of
faith in his university years as he studied to be
a lawyer. But when a good friend showed him
the gentleness of Christ, he was led back to the
Church and to a devotion to the Blessed
Virgin. In the autumn of 1872, Bartolo Longo,
now a lawyer, arrived in Pompeii to take care
of the legal affairs of a countess. One evening,
as he walked near the ruined rat and lizardinfested chapel at Pompeii, he had a profound
mystical experience. He wrote: “As I pondered
over my condition, I experienced a deep sense of despair and
almost committed suicide. Then I heard an echo in my ear of
the voice of Friar Alberto repeating the words of the Blessed
Virgin Mary: ‘If you seek salvation, promulgate the Rosary.
This is Mary's own promise.’ These words illumined my soul.
I went on my knees. ‘If it is true ... I will not leave this valley
until I have propagated your Rosary.’”
Bartolo began to spread the Rosary among the
sharecroppers and the farmers and collected pennies
from them to build a new church. He also wanted a
picture of the Blessed Virgin before which the Rosary
could be recited every day. He eventually obtained a
damaged, discarded painting of Our Lady of the Rosary.
It was in poor condition and of dubious artistic quality
but it was all he could afford. Nonetheless, after the
picture was retouched for exposition, miracles were
reported. From that time on, hundreds of miracles were
officially recorded at the sanctuary of the Shrine of Our
Lady of the Rosary. In 1884, a year after the Shrine was
built, a girl from Pompeii named Fortuna Agrelli
experienced a private revelation. She had an
incurable illness and her doctors had given
up on her. When her family joined her in
reciting the Rosary, she saw a vision of the
Blessed Mother sitting on a high throne
profusely decorated with flowers with the
Infant Jesus on her lap. She held a Rosary in
her hand and was accompanied by
St. Dominic and St. Catherine of Siena.
Our Lady and the Child were clad in goldembroidered garments. Fortuna addressed
Our Lady: “Queen of the Holy Rosary, be
gracious to me, restore me to health! I have
already prayed to Thee in a novena, O Mary, but have not yet
experienced Thy aid. I am so anxious to be cured!”
Our Lady is said to have replied: “Child, you have
invoked me by various titles and have always obtained favors
from me. Now, since you have called me by that title so pleasing
to me, ‘Queen of the Holy Rosary’, I can no longer refuse the
favor you petition; for this name is most precious and dear to
me. Make three novenas, and you shall obtain all.”
The Queen of the Holy Rosary is said to have
appeared again, saying: “Whoever desires to obtain favors
from me should make three novenas of the prayers of the Rosary,
and three novenas in thanksgiving.”

Manasquan Ministerium Annual Ecumenical Service
will be held at Holy Trinity Church in Manasquan on
Wednesday, November 26th, at 8 PM. All are welcome
to come and sing. Practice is at their church before the
service at 7 PM. Choir members please remember to

1% of Catholics Can Change the Direction of the World!
Meets once a week downstairs on Wednesdays from 6:30 AM to 7:20 AM.
Coffee is served at 6:15 AM.
This is not a fundraising group. Open to all Catholic men.
St. Mark’s is continuing its initiative for men who are ready to
join in a group effort to strengthen their faith and move closer
to God. Most weeks, between 22 and 35 men attend!

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
When: Sunday, Nov. 16, 7:30-9 PM in St. Mark’s
basement.
What: Please bring a shoebox, one roll of last year’s
Christmas wrapping paper, scissors, and Scotch™ tape.
Also bring some of the following:
☺ Small Toys: cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos,
harmonicas, yoyos, jump ropes, Etch-a-Sketches™
with batteries, etc.
☺ Hygiene items: toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar
soap, comb, washcloth, etc.
☺ Other: t-shirts, socks, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches,
flashlights with batteries, etc.
☺ Hard candy: variety
Do not pack your box until you get to church. We will
distribute everything evenly and then wrap.

Faith, Hope and Love at Life's End
New Mausoleum at St. Anne’s Cemetery in Wall
On Sunday, December 7th, from 1-3 PM at St. Rose in
Belmar, the Diocesan Respect Life Ministry of the
Department of Pastoral Care will host “Catholic
Teaching on End-of-Life Issues and Physician-Assisted
Suicide.” Speakers are Sister of Charity Patricia Codey,
president of the Catholic Healthcare Partnership of New
Jersey; along with Deacon Patrick Brannigan, of St. James
Parish, Pennington, executive director and spokesperson
on public policy matters for the New Jersey Catholic
Conference. They will present a program to assist in the
better understanding of Catholic teaching regarding endof-life issues and the moral concerns of physician-assisted
suicide.
St. Catharine’s has recently received a temporary
Certificate of Occupancy (CO) from Wall Township for
St. Anne’s cemetery Resurrection mausoleum and can
now schedule interments. The first casket to be moved
was that of St. Catharine’s former pastor, Msgr.
Luebking. The final CO is expected in the next several
weeks after which pricing will be increased. For

Is God Calling You?
Vocational discernment groups meet to assist young men
who are discerning the possibility that God may be
calling them to a life of priestly ministry. These groups
are designed to explore a priestly vocation with other
like-minded men through prayer and sharing vocation
stories and experiences. The group meetings aren't meant
to convince anyone that the priesthood is their vocation.
They are designed to assist you in discovering if the
priesthood is your true vocation and build your
relationship with Christ along the way. If you are a
faithful, single, Roman Catholic man, between the ages
of 18 and 40, and are asking yourself whether God is
calling you to be a priest, you are cordially invited to
attend this month’s discernment meeting on Sunday,
November 23rd, from 4:00 PM-6 PM at St. Charles
Borromeo Parish, 2226 Riverton Road, Cinnaminson.

Picollo, as they share their experiences of the priesthood,

Sea Girt Elementary Annual Craft Show
On Saturday, November 22nd
from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

the Sea Girt Elementary

will host a craft show. This
annual event features 60
crafters and artists selling
their fine handcrafts. A
delicious lunch will be served by the 8th grade students.
Come enjoy a festive atmosphere which includes a bake
sale, kettle corn, homemade fudge and gift baskets raffle.
Adult admission is only $2.
St. Denis Blood Drive
Today, Sunday, November 16th, from 9 AM to 2 PM, the
Knights of Columbus Council #3231 is sponsoring a
community blood drive at St. Denis School cafeteria in
Manasquan. Walk-in donors are welcome! You must be
at least 17 years old, healthy, and weigh at least 120 lbs.
Donors must present a signature ID. Please drink water
before arriving to donate.

Catholic Chari es, pueden procesar su solicitud de
renovación o la aplicación inicial.
