Todos los veranos nos bombardean
con la noticia de los abandonos de
los animales, pero la realidad es
que los animales son abandonados
durante todo el año, sólo que en
vacaciones es más frecuente. Esta
es una de las consecuencias de
meter en nuestras vidas un animal
sin tener claro qué es lo que estamos
haciendo.
Every summer we are invaded with news about animals being abandoned
but the reality is that animals are abandoned throughout the whole
year. It’s only that it’s more frequent to do it on holiday. This is one of the
consequences of introducing an animal into our lives without a clear idea
of what we are doing.
En primer lugar un animal está
tan vivo como nosotros, por lo que
tienen una serie de necesidades
que debemos estar dispuestos a
satisfacer. Estas necesidades estarán presentes los trescientos sesenta
y cinco días del año. Ante esta perspectiva deberíamos tener en cuenta
lo siguiente:
1) What type of animal to choose? This question is very much related to
our personal taste. Nowadays there are many types of pets: dogs and cats
(they are the pets par excellence), hamsters, rabbits, guinea pigs, parrots,
canary birds, pythons, etc. Each of them has different peculiarities which
will affect our relation with the animal; for example dogs need to be taken
out to “do their needs” even if it’s cold or rainy. Are we willing to do this?
1) ¿Qué especie de animal elegir?: Esta pregunta está muy relacionada
con nuestro gusto. Hoy día hay gran cantidad de mascotas: perros
y gatos (son los animales de compañía por antonomasia), hamsters,
conejos, cobayas, loros, canarios, pitones,
etc. Cada una tiene unas peculiaridades
que repercutirán en nuestra relación con
el animal, por ejemplo los perros tienen
necesidad de ser sacados al exterior para
hacer sus “necesidades” aunque llueva o
haga frío. ¿Estamos dispuestos a hacer
esto?
2) ¿Dónde comprar el animal? Una buena
idea es comprarlo en tiendas especializadas
donde nos puedan aconsejar. Otra opción
es comprarlo a criadores particulares, en
este caso deberemos saber todos los datos
del criador para que, en caso de problemas,
podamos dirigirnos a él.
Y para mí la más interesante es la de los
albergues y perreras donde encontraremos
animales abandonados que han sufrido
In the first place, an animal is as alive as we are and therefore it has a
series of needs that we must be prepared to satisfy. These needs will be
present throughout 365 days of the year. Taking this into perspective we
should take into account the following:
2) Where to buy the animal? A good idea is to buy it from specialised shops
where we can be given advice. Another option is to buy it from private
breeders; in this case we need to know everything about the breeder just
in case we need to speak to him in the event of any problems.
And for me the most interesting option are
the kennels where we can find abandoned
animals that have suffered all sort of
neglect and that, in general, will give us
affection and faithfulness. In addition, they
will hardly cost us any money apart from
the prescriptive vaccines.
Alter we have acquired our animal, and
before he comes home, it’s essential
to make a visit to the vet to make sure
that the animal isn’t suffering from any
contagious or other type of illness.
3) The animal’s arrival in the house: at
the beginning it’s necessary to be very
patient as the animal needs to adapt
itself to the new surroundings. However,
we must always remember that we are

Es fundamental tras la adquisición de nuestro animal y antes de
introducirlo en nuestra casa, una visita al veterinario para asegurarnos
de que el animal no padece enfermedades infecto-contagiosas o cualquier
otra patología.
3) La llegada del animal a casa:
Al principio hace falta tener paciencia en altas dosis, el animal debe
adaptarse al entorno, pero siempre hay que tener en cuenta algo
fundamental: en casa mandamos nosotros y por lo tanto no debemos
permitir que surjan conductas que sean incompatibles con la convivencia.
La mayoría de los abandonos son producidos por que no hemos sabido
educar a nuestro animal. Los animales no son responsables de sus actos,
los responsables siempre somos nosotros, por tanto en algunas especies
es fundamental un seguro de responsabilidad civil. Si no somos capaces
de educar a la mascota, recurramos a educadores profesionales.
4) El impacto económico:
Una mascota nos traerá gastos, unos podremos preverlos y otros no. Los
gastos más importantes dentro de los previstos, son la alimentación, las
visitas veterinarias rutinarias y los accesorios (correas, collares, jaulas,
casetas, productos de limpieza, etc) no son muy caros. No debemos
escatimar en alimentación y menos si es un cachorro, pues su salud
dependerá en gran medida del cómo lo alimentemos, tampoco debemos
saltarnos ninguna visita al veterinario.
Los gastos imprevistos suelen estar asociados con la salud, y por tanto
con el veterinario, los traumas asociados a accidentes son caros, sobre
todo las fracturas. También se presentarán a lo largo de la vida del animal
enfermedades propias de cada especie y que pueden resultar caras.
5) ¿Qué hacer con nuestro animal cuándo viajemos y no pueda
acompañarnos?.
En principio deberíamos planificarnos para llevar siempre nuestros
animales con nosotros. Si esto no es posible, ciertas especies como
algunas aves, no plantean mucho problema si tenemos algún vecino o
amigo que nos haga el favor de cuidarlas. En caso de otras como los perros
que necesitan salir, si no contamos con alguien de confianza que se haga
cargo podemos recurrir a residencias. Es muy importante si recurrimos a
este sistema que sea de confianza, visitar el lugar antes de dejar nuestro
animal, y en caso de duda
no dejarlo nunca.
Sólo me queda decir que
si decidimos convivir
con un animal, en la
mayoría de los casos
será una experiencia
muy gratificante y
única.

4) The economic impact:
A pet will bring expenses and
we will be able to plan ahead
for some, although not for all
of them. The most important
expenses are: food; visits to the
vet and accessories (collars, leash, cages, kennels, cleaning products, etc.).
These expenses can be forecast and they are not very expensive. We should
not skimp on money for food – above all if it’s a puppy- as his health will depend
on how we feed the animal; neither should we be sparing with visits to the vet.
The unforeseen expenses are usually associated with health and therefore
with the vet. Traumas associated with accidents are expensive, mainly
in the case of fractures. Also, there will be some illnesses related to the
animal species that can be expensive.
5) What to do with our animal when we are travelling and he can’t come
with us?
If this is not possible, some species such as some birds are not very
problematic. We can leave them with a friend or neighbour who can do us
the favour of looking after them. In other cases, such as dogs, which need
to be taken out, if we don’t have anybody of confidence then we can turn
to kennels. If we decide to take this option, it’s very important to visit the
place before we leave our animal and, if we have doubts we should never
leave him.
