Veterans’ Day Program
The annual Veterans’ Day Program will be held
Monday, November 10, 2014 on the Washington
Colony Middle School campus at 9:00 AM.
The community is invited to come out and join
us in honoring our Veterans and those currently
serving our county.
We encourage all staff, students, and the community to proudly wear the colors of the flag–
Red, White and Blue!
(School will not be in session Tuesday, November 11th
in honor of Veterans’ Day. Classes resume Wednesday,
November 12th.)
We have decided to include a
new feature in the monthly
newsletter that will highlight
each month’s Students of the
Month. Since there was no newsletter for August, and the September and October editions did
not include the Students of the
Month, the August, September
and October students are all
featured in this edition.
We hope to be able to include
the teachers’ statements about
why individual students were
selected for the Student of the
Month honor, and you will find
some of these statements for
some of the October Students of
the Month.
The teachers, administrators
and staff members are very
proud of the outstanding students who have been chosen as
Student of the Month! Congratulation to each student and to
the parents and family members
who support them in their pursuits of excellence! Children are
able to achieve more when their
families have high expectations
and encourage them in their
efforts.
It is a joy to be able to feature
these outstanding Patriots in the
monthly newsletter and we
hope you, too, will enjoy this
new item.
Keeping Kids Healthy
There is a great deal of information
in the news these days about serious
viruses and illnesses. Of great concern to parents is the Enterovirus
that affects mainly children and can
be extremely serious. In this edition
of the Patriot Press you will find a
print-out that gives information
about the Enterovirus, seasonal flu,
and the Ebola virus. There are also
websites listed where you may obtain
additional information.
It is important that children stay at
home when they are ill. If your child
has a fever, he or she should stay
home until they’ve been fever-free
for at least 24 hours. You can help
keep your family in good health by
making sure everyone gets plenty of
sleep, eats a healthy diet, and be sure
to employ good hand-washing habits.
With your help, we can keep our
Patriots strong and fit!

Programa del Día de Veteranos
El Programa Anual del Día de Veteranos será llevado a
cabo el lunes 10 de noviembre del 2014 en el plantel de
la Escuela IntermediaWashington Colony a las 9:00 AM.
La comunidad está invitada a venir y unirse a nosotros
para honrar a nuestros Veteranos y a las personas que
están sirviendo a nuestro país en la actualidad.
¡Animamos a todo el personal, los estudiantes y a la
comunidad a usar con orgullo los colores de la bandera–
Rojo, Blanco y Azul!
(No habrá escuela el martes 11 de noviembre en honor al Día de

Decidimos incluir un artículo
nuevo en el boletín mensual que
presentará a los Estudiantes del
Mes cada mes. Ya que no
tuvimos un boletín in agosto y
las ediciones de septiembre y
octubre no incluyeron a los
Estudiantes del Mes, los
estudiantes del mes de agosto,
septiembre y octubre son
presentados en esta edición.
Esperamos poder incluir las
declaraciones de los maestros
sobre las razones por las cuales
los estudiantes fueron escogidos
para el honor de ser Estudiantes
del Mes y van a encontrar
algunas de estas declaraciones
para los Estudiantes del Mes de
octubre.

Manteniendo a los Niños Saludables
En estos días hay mucha
información en las noticias sobre
varios virus y enfermedades serias.
Para los padres es alarmante el
“Enterovirus” el cual afecta
principalmente a los niños y puede
ser extremadamente serio. En esta
edición de la Prensa Patriótica
encontrarán una hoja que da
información sobre el “Enterovirus”,
la influenza de temporada y el virus
de Ebola. También hemos enlistado
sitios web en donde ustedes pueden
obtener información adicional.
Es bien importante que los niños se
queden en casa cuando están
enfermos. Si su niño tiene fiebre, él o
ella debe quedarse en casa hasta que
haya estado libre de fiebre por 24
horas. Ustedes pueden ayudar a
mantener a su familia en buena salud
asegurándose que todos duerman lo
suficiente, coman una dieta saludable
y que empleen buenos hábitos de
lavarse las manos. ¡Con su ayuda,
podemos mantener a nuestros

Classroom News
Transitional Kindergarten, (Mrs.
Smith): We wish to offer a great big
Thank You for all the Halloween goodies
that were brought to the party! The kids
really enjoyed it and had a great time. Also,
thank you to parents who were able to go
along to the Pumpkin Patch. Mrs. Smith
really appreciates it! Hope you had a great
time.
We will have a Thanksgiving Feast on
November 21st; more information will be
sent home as the date gets closer. Parent/
Teacher conferences will be held this
month. Be sure to send back your child’s
conference note. The office has gone to
great lengths to set times. It is important
that parents meet with Mrs. Smith to learn
about their child’s progress.
Please continue to work with your child
on sight words, number recognition and
letter recognition each night. Also read,
read, read!
Kindergarten, (Mr. Schaffer and Mrs.
Davis): October was a busy month! Thank
you to the parents who went with us to the
fire station. The students learned what to
do in case of a house fire. Thank you to all
of our parents who helped with the Halloween Party! The students had a lot of fun.
During Red Ribbon Week we learned to
say No To Drugs!
We will have a Thanksgiving Feast on
Friday, November 21st, and will send
home more information about it as we get
closer to the date. We look forward to
seeing you at conference time November
18-21. The students will be released at
1:15 PM on conference days. Conferences
start at 1:30 PM. When you receive your
conference note with a date and time,
please return it as soon as possible.
Everyone is doing a great job returning
homework on Fridays. Please continue
working on letters, sounds, numbers and
sight words with your child. Now that it is

beginning to get colder, please remember
to label your child’s coat or sweater.
Thanks again for all you do for your child!
First Grade, (Mrs. Dack and Mrs. Pallas): The First Grade students are learning
about consonants and vowels and how the
two team up to make words. Blending the
sounds together and practicing sight words,
(those that you cannot sound out), are the
keys to good reading. Please read to your
child each day and listen to them read as
they begin to bring books home. Ask questions about the story, such as: What is this
story about? Who was the main character?
The students are also learning more about
addition and subtraction in math. You can
do some fun subtraction games at home
with snacks. Start with 12 crackers or pieces of fruit, etc. and do subtraction problems with the food. There were 12 crackers.
Maria at 5. How many are left? Write the
subtraction sentence to match the story:
12-5=7.
Fifth Grade, (Mrs. Hawkins and Mrs.
Barker): In language arts we have finished
reading The Big Wave and other excerpts on
extreme weather. Next we will read about
people who faced many challenges and always did their best. In math we are adding,
subtracting, multiplying, and dividing with
decimals. The students are learning to work
out true life word problems, so keep practicing those math facts! In history we have
finished studying explorers and analyzing
their reasons for exploration. Soon we will
begin our study of the founding of the 13
Colonies and the colonists’ conflicts with
the Native Americans.
The Water Cycle and extreme weather
are still on our minds in science. We conducted an experiment to turn salt water to
freshwater through evaporation and condensation. We have discussed ways to save
our limited supply of fresh water.
As always, be sure your student reads for
20 minutes each night and fill in their book
logs. We look forward to meeting all of
you at conferences and discussing ways to
meet the students’ needs.
Seventh Grade, (Mrs. Huffmon): Seventh graders are keeping busy and working
hard every day. Continue reading to see
how they’re doing from their perspectives.
Math: Lizbeth Zamora– In math we are
learning how to turn a decimal into a fraction and a fraction into a decimal. It’s challenging because you can’t give up. It’s fun
not to give up.
Vanessa Hernandez– Mr. Marquez is showing
us conversions and shortcuts so we can
solve complex problems in a simple way.
Sevanna Jaura– We are learning about Pascal’s triangle. It’s kind of creepy because
they all have a pattern whether or not you
try to make one or not. It just happens.
Atiana Aguilar– Lately we have some challenging word problems, but it’s fun because
we work in groups.
Science: Erica Quiroz– We are talking
about electromagnetic waves and spectrum.
I think that is difficult because I’ve never
heard of that. It’s fun because I am learning
something new.
Kaytana Maclin– We are creating questions
and answers for the big idea. We are also
learning about living things, like cells and
organisms.
Alejandro Trujillo– We are learning about
how mirrors work, how rainbows form,
and electromagnetic waves.
PE/Electives: Audrey Acosta– In PE we are
playing flag football, but today we are doing 15 minutes of running or walking. It
will help us with the mile. In band we’re
practicing for Veteran’s Day. It helps me
learn more instruments.

Kindergarten Transicional, (Sra.
Smith): Queremos ofrecer nuestro gran
agradecimiento por todas las cosas ricas del
Día de Brujas (Halloween) que mandaron
para la fiesta. Los niños las disfrutaron
mucho y se divirtieron de lo lindo.
También muchas gracias a los padres que
pudieron ir al Sembradío de Calabazas. ¡La
Sra. Smith se lo agradece mucho! Espero
que hayan tenido un buen tiempo.
Vamos a tener una fiesta de Acción de
Gracias el 21 de noviembre; más
información será mandada a la casa según el
día se aproxime. Las conferencias de los
Padres/Maestros se llevarán a cabo este
mes. Asegúrense de mandar de regreso la
nota de conferencia de sus niños. La oficina
ha trabajado mucho para establecer las
citas. Es importante que los padres se
reúnan con la Sra. Smith para hablar sobre
el progreso de sus niños.
Por favor sigan trabajando con sus niños

Primer Grado, (Sra. Dack y Sra.
Pallas): Los estudiantes del primer grado
están aprendiendo sobre las consonantes y
las vocales y sobre cómo estas se unen para
formar palabras. Mezclar los sonidos y
practicar las palabras conocidas a simple
vista, (esas que no pueden pronunciar
deletreándolas), son clave para la buena
lectura. Por favor léanles a sus niños cada
día y escúchenlos leer cuando comiencen a
llevar libros a las casas. Háganles preguntas
sobre las historias, como: ¿De qué se trata la
historia? ¿Quién es el personaje principal?
Los estudiantes también están aprendiendo
más sobre la suma y la resta en
matemáticas. Pueden hacer juegos
divertidos sobre restas con golosinas en las
casas. Comiencen con 12 galletas saladas o
pedazos de frutas y hagan problemas de
restas con la comida. Había 12 galletas
saladas. Maria se comió 5. ¿Cuantas quedan?
Escriban las oraciones de esas restas sobre
las historias: 12-5=7.
Quinto Grado, (Sra. Hawkins y Sra.
Barker): En las artes del lenguaje hemos
terminado de leer “The Big Wave” y otros
pasajes sobre el clima extremo. A
continuación vamos a leer sobre las
personas que enfrentaron muchos desafíos y
que siempre dieron los mejor de si. En
matemáticas estamos sumando, restando,
multiplicando y dividiendo decimales. Los
estudiantes están aprendiendo a trabajar
problemas escritos sobre situaciones de la
vida real, así que sigan practicando las tablas
matemáticas. En historia hemos terminado
de estudiar los exploradores y de analizar

Séptimo Grado, (Sra. Huffmon): Los

escalofriante porque todos tienen un patrón
ya sea que uno lo trate de hacer o no.

Atiana Aguilar– One of my electives is geometry. I think this will help me when I get
older in high school. In Leadership we are
planning for Red Ribbon Week.
Alysa Espinoza– In PE we are doing flag
football. It’s fun because I always play quarterback.
English: Erica Quiroz– We are doing vocabulary and spelling. It is fun because we
just finished a good book called A Wrinkle in
Time.
Lilliana Ruiz– We just watched the movie A
Wrinkle in Time, and while we watched it,
we completed a characterization chart.
Vanessa Hernandez– In English we are learning about prepositions and are improving
our spelling and reading.
Sevanna Jaura– We are working on prepositions, and along with that there is usually a
video. It’s a song, so once you hear it, it
gets stuck in your head.
Social Studies: Jackie Huizar– We have
been learning about Islamic beliefs. They
believe in one god and that rich people
should share their riches with the poor.
Destiny Maravilla– We are studying how
Islam spread. It is interesting because we
learn about what happened in the past.
Vanessa Hernandez– We are reading about
Islam and the teachings of the Muslim,
Christian, and Jewish religions.
Extra-Curricular Activities: Lilliana
Ruiz– Today is my last cross country meet.
I’m really sad. I loved the kids I ran with
and especially the teacher. He was supercool. I’m going to miss cross country.
Sevanna Jaura– I was recently doing volleyball. That was super fun, especially because
you’re doing it with friends and the coaches
are the best coaches. They really help you if
you mess up, and they try to make you
better. But next week soccer season will
start, and this time I hope I don’t break
anything!
Audrey Acosta– Junior Health Institute is fun
because we do experiments.
Alysa Espinoza– In sports we just finished
volleyball and are moving on to soccer. We
will be having soccer tryouts.
Recess: Lilliana Ruiz– When I see two or
three people tossing the football, I try to
join in because I love football!
Ashley Gutierrez– What I do for recess is talk
to my friends or play basketball.
Aracely Secundino– I hang out with my
friends. The boys play football and Cops
and Robbers.
It looks like our seventh graders are enjoying the learning process while making time
to socialize with their friends and participate in extra-curricular activities. Way to
go, Patriots!
Quetzalli Lopez– I am in a peer mediation
class which teaches me how to help other
students that are having a hard time.

problemas escritos bien desafiantes, pero han sido
divertidos porque hemos trabajado en grupos.
Ciencias: Erica Quiroz– Estamos hablando sobre
las ondas electromagnéticas y el espectro. Pienso
que son difíciles porque nunca había escuchado
sobre ellos. Son divertidos porque estoy
aprendiendo algo nuevo.
Kaytana Maclin– Estamos creando preguntas y
respuestas para la gran idea. También estamos
aprendiendo sobre las cosas vivientes como las
células y los organismos.
Alejandro Trujillo– Estamos aprendiendo sobre

Educación Física estamos jugando fútbol de
banderas, pero ahora vamos a correr o caminar por
15 minutos. Nos va a ayudar con la milla. En banda

Sevanna Jaura– Hasta hace poco estuve en voleibol.
Eso fue bien divertido, especialmente porque lo
hago con amigos y los entrenadores son de lo
mejor. Ellos verdaderamente te ayudan si te
equivocas y tratan de ayudarte a mejorar. La
próxima semana comienza la temporada de soccer
y esta vez espero no quebrar nada.
Lilliana Ruiz– Acabamos de mirar una película “A
Wrinkle in Time” y mientras la veíamos, hicimos una
tabla de caracterización.
Vanessa Hernandez– En Inglés estamos aprendiendo
sobre las preposiciones y están mejorando nuestra
ortografía y lectura.
Sevanna Jaura– Estamos trabajando en
preposiciones y con este tema casi siempre vemos
un video. Es una canción así que una vez la
escuchas se queda trabada en tu mente.
Estudios Sociales: Jackie Huizar– Hemos estado
aprendiendo sobre las creencias Islámicas. Creen
en un dios y que la gente rica debe compartir sus
riquezas con los pobres.

Quetzalli Lopez– Estoy en la clase de mediación de
compañeros la cual me ayuda a asistir a estudiantes
que están teniendo dificultades.
Audrey Acosta– El Instituto de Salud Junior es
divertido porque hacemos experimentos.
Alysa Espinoza– En deportes acabamos de terminar
voleibol y nos vamos a mover a soccer. Vamos a
tener pruebas de soccer.
Recreo: Lilliana Ruiz– Cuando veo dos o tres
personas tirando la pelota de fútbol, trato de jugar
con ellos porque me encanta el fútbol.

Mrs. Smith: Maria Anaya is a very hard working
student. She is always listening. She returns her
homework on time. Maria is a great role model, very
reliable and gets all of her work done.
Mrs. Davis: Andrew Lara is very respectful of not
only the teacher but his classmates as well. He respects school property and himself in that he follows
the rules and takes care of himself! Congratulations
Andrew!
Mr. Schaffer: Antonio Lara always has a positive
attitude, is a hard worker, goes out of his way to be
helpful to others. He is always respectful of the school
by keeping the campus clean and being respectful of
his teachers and friends.
Mrs. Dack: Julissa Bibian is a great reader, wonderful writer, and precise mathematician; Julissa does
it all! She is also kind, honest, hard-working and a
strong citizen. Congratulations Julissa!
Mrs. Lyles: Yahaira Rodriguez was chosen because she
has always shown respect to not only the teacher but to her
classmates. She is a great role model for everyone in the
class because she is always polite to others and listens attentively to the teacher.

Mrs. McCabe: Respect is the character trait for October
and Carlos Hernandez has proven to be a very respectful
student. He participates in class, turns in his work on time
and is always prepared. He is a great model to his classmates on how to be a respectful student.
Mrs. Pallas:Yaslene Barr is eager to learn! She is an
excellent reader and is doing very well in math. Her
classroom behavior is outstanding. She is friendly and

Mrs. Huffmon: Quetzalli Lopez continuously shows
respect to her classmates and teachers. She comes to school
prepared to learn and takes an active role in the learning
process. Also, she speaks in a positive, uplifting way to
those around her and is committed to completing her
homework on time. Clearly Quetzalli deserves to be recognized as a role
model!

Mrs. Martinez: Chris Almaraz was chosen because
he is such a respectful young man. He speaks his
mind clearly to his peers and adults. When he goes
to groups with another teacher, I always know he
will make me proud because other teachers look
forward to having him in their class. He also listens
to what other have to say and is willing to compromise.

trabajadora. Siempre escucha. Regresa su tarea a
tiempo. Maria es un buen modelo a seguir, muy
responsable y siempre termina su trabajo.
Sra. Davis: Andrew Lara es muy respetuoso no
solamente hacia su maestra, pero también hacia sus
compañeros. Respeta la propiedad de la escuela al
seguir las reglas. ¡Felicidades Andrew!
Sr. Schaffer: Antonio Lara siempre tiene una actitud
positiva, es bien trabajador y siempre está dispuesto a
ayudar a otros. Siempre es bien respetuoso hacia la
escuela manteniendo el plantel limpio y respetando a
sus maestros y amigos.
Sra. Dack: Julissa Bibian es una buena lectora,
maravillosa escritora y trabaja con gran precisión en
matemáticas; Julissa hace todo. Ella es bien amable,
honesta, trabajadora y muy buena en cívica.

aprender. Ella es una lectora excelente y está

escucha lo que otros tienen que decir y siempre está dispuesto a
llegar a un compromiso.
