Moreover, it is placed at significant points: the beginning, the center, and the end. Though this is technically a parable, it is quite short (four verses). The threefold repetition of “watch” leaves no doubt as to what the story is about. We often think of Advent as a time of waiting, but it truly is a season of watchfulness, a very active form of waiting for the coming Day of the Lord. It is that day, more than Christmas day, that the Christian community faithfully expects, using all of our gifts and talents for this purpose, as Paul reminds us in the Letter to the Corinthians. When we use these gifts in faithful watching and expectation, we become like the servants of the parable, set to their tasks, not waiting around idly, but engaged in the master’s work until his return. May our Advent be a time when we return or rededicate our lives and our communities to this work—the active and diligent faithfulness that the Lord will expect to find. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. First Reading — We are the clay and you, O Lord, are the potter: we are the work of your hands (Isaiah 63:16b-17, 19b; 64:2-7). Psalm — Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved (Psalm 80). Second Reading — God is faithful; by God you were called to fellowship with the Son (1 Corinthians 1:3-9). Gospel — Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come. (Mark 13:33-37). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Each of the seven sacraments, like other aspects of the Church’s pastoral plan, is an attempt to be faithful to the image of Christ we discover in the Gospels. Anointing of the sick is rooted in Jesus’ saving deeds of healing and even rescue from death. What is your favorite encounter of Jesus with a sick person? Often, it seems that Jesus would go at once to the person in a crowd who was in the most pain, in the deepest need. A man born blind, Peter’s mother‑in‑law, a woman afflicted by years of uncontrollable hemorrhages, a little Roman girl beloved by her soldier father, a crippled man lowered from the rafters, and even a man who lost his ear to a swinging sword in the garden of agony. This list reads like an admissions chart in an emergency room, and perhaps that is the point. The whole human experience from childhood to old age, from sudden catastrophic illness to chronic debilitating conditions, is represented by those for whom Jesus has such great compassion. This we can name a treasure of tradition with a capital “T.” We are a people of compassion for our sick, who reach out in tenderness to listen, to keep vigil, to strengthen, to touch with reverence, and to anoint with precious oil. —Rev. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, yright © J. S. Paluch Co. As Catholics we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible (Code of Canon Law, canon 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation is encouraged for all. Teens also were less likely to drink if they reported that they regularly attended public worship and expressed confidence in getting “support from God” when in need. For parents anxious about teen vulnerability, these findings confirm that a strong marriage and regular church attendance as a family are powerful tools to keep teenagers out of trouble. –Catholic Parent ST. Today, as the Church seeks to experience a profound missionary renewal, there is a kind of preaching which falls to each of us as a daily responsibility. It has to do with bringing the Gospel to the people we meet, whether they be our neighbours or complete strangers. This is the informal preaching which takes place in the middle of a conversation, something along the lines of what a missionary does when visiting a home. Being a disciple means being constantly ready to bring the love of Jesus to others, and this can happen unexpectedly and in any place: on the street, in a city square, during work, on a journey. 128. In this preaching, which is always respectful and gentle, the first step is personal dialogue, when the other person speaks and shares his or her joys, hopes and concerns for loved ones, or so many other heartfelt needs. Only afterwards is it possible to bring up God’s word, perhaps by reading a Bible verse or relating a story, but always keeping in mind the fundamental message: the personal love of God who became man, who gave himself up for us, who is living and who offers us his salvation and his friendship. This message has to be shared humbly as a testimony on the part of one who is always willing to learn, in the awareness that the message is so rich and so deep that it always exceeds our grasp. At times the message can be presented directly, at times by way of a personal witness or gesture, or in a way which the Holy Spirit may suggest in that particular situation. If it seems prudent and if the circumstances are right, this fraternal and missionary encounter could end with a brief prayer related to the concerns which the person may have expressed. In this way they will have an experience of being listened to and understood; they will know that their particular situation has been placed before God, and that God’s word really speaks to their lives. EXHORTACIÓN APOSTÓLICA “Evangelii Gaudium” DEL SANTO PADRE FRANCISCO Capítulo 127 y 128 Persona a Persona 127. Divine Preparations for the Incarnation “ In so often recalling the ancient promises, in revealing, little by little through the mouths of the prophets, the traits of the Redeemer Who was to come, God willed to produce in the hearts of the just of the Old Covenant the requisite conditions whereby the coming of the Messiah should be salutary for them. Besides, the more the just of the Old Covenant were filled with faith and confidence in the promises announced by their prophets, the more they would burn with the desire to see them realized, and the more they would be ready to receive the abundance of graces that the Savior was to bring to the world. It was in this way that the Virgin Mary, Zachary and Elizabeth, Simeon, Anna, and the other faithful souls who lived at the time of Christ's coming, at once recognized Him and were inundated with His favors.” — Catholic Online Meet God half-way by preparing well, during this season of Advent, for the coming of the Messiah to us in a deeply personal way. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. A voice of one crying out in the desert: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths,” John the Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. People of the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. John was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He fed on locusts and wild honey. And this is what he proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” Brief commentary: Notice that the Gospel of Mark does not begin with the infancy narratives. Mark is the oldest and the shortest of the four gospels and his work is summarized in the first verse: “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God.” The entire gospel is devoted to establishing Jesus’ identity. Mark is not concerned with the childhood of Jesus but with his identity and mission in the world. Each year, the second Sunday of Advent is dedicated to John the Baptist, the last of the great Jewish prophets. Today’s passage anticipates the appearance of the adult Jesus, his preaching, healing and ministry among the people. The prophets of Israel were seldom accepted by priests and kings, because of their faithfulness to God that transcended their obedience to religious and political authorities. John the Baptist appeared as one of them preaching outside the official world of his time. In Mark’s Gospel John has one function: to point to Jesus as the Messiah. Through the life-giving baptism with the Holy Spirit, Jesus will create a new people of God. But first he identifies himself with the people of Israel in submitting to John's baptism of repentance and in bearing on their behalf the burden of God's decisive judgment. Today’s reading offers three significant messages: · The clothing of John recalls the austere dress of the prophet Elijah described in 2 Kings 1:8. · Although Jesus will be baptized by John, it is clear that John understands his subordinate role in the Jesus event. Through the life-giving baptism with the Holy Spirit, Jesus will create a new people of God. · For our shared or personal reflection: After a brief pause for silent reflection share your answers, ideas or feelings. 1. How can I better prepare for the celebration of Christmas even if my family is going through financial difficulties? Explain. 2. Am I aware that I am not “the messiah,” but simply one who announces his coming? Have I ever tried to be the “center” of my family’s Christmas celebration?
