LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR
"If faith is to be strong and healthy, it must be constantly
nourished by the Word of God." ~ Pope Francis
Dear Parishioners,
Some who are not Catholic have difficulty understanding
the idea of Purgatory. One reason backing up the doctrine of
purgatory and praying for the dead is simple common sense. We
all know there is no selfishness in heaven. It simply can't exist
there, because God is pure love, pure unselfishness. But we also
know that not all of us, not even all good Christians, die
completely freed of selfishness and selfish tendencies.
Therefore, those who die with some selfish habits and selfcentered attitudes still clinging to their soul need to be cleaned up
a bit before they enter heaven. This cleaning up process is
known as Purgatory. The word actually comes from Latin root
"purgatio" which means cleansing or purifying. This purification
can also take place here on earth. One of the reasons God
permits suffering is precisely to give us an opportunity to accept
and endure it with love, as Christ did on the cross. When we do
that, suffering becomes a medicine that lessens our selfishness
and helps us grow in every Christ-like virtue: patience, humility,
fortitude, and wisdom. But when we keep our friendship with
Christ alive in this life without really giving it top priority, we allow
sinful and selfish habits to grow in our souls like weeds in a
garden. In that case, after we die, God has to pull out the weeds
and clean out the garden before we can fully enjoy the divine
presence in heaven - that's the painful process of purgatory. So,
common sense tells us that most of us will need some spiritual
cleaning up after we die and before we enter heaven. As the
catechism says: "All who die in God's grace and friendship,
but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their
eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification,
so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of
heaven. The Church gives the name purgatory to this final
purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the
punishment of the damned."

Another image of purgatory is the eye pain we feel
when exiting a movie theatre at 3 pm, after sitting in the dark
theatre for two hours, and then suddenly facing the blazing
afternoon sun our eyes are not prepared for. That painful
adjustment is similar to adjusting to the glory of God face to face
we are not fully prepared for. Fr. Dan

entrance. They did a beautiful job improving the front. Thanks to
all of you. And a word to all from them and me: please don’t bring
any gum to church. It makes such an unsightly mess.

November 2 - That we give generously without expecting
anything in return. “Those who trust in him will understand
truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because
grace and mercy are upon his elect, and he watches over his
holy ones.” (Wisdom of Solomon 3:9). Here’s the ironic thing
about people who are generous. Those that give freely and
cheerfully do not do it to be rewarded. They do it to show their
love for God and their neighbors. Yet, because of their generosity,
they typically are given more than they gave away!

REFLEXIÓN SOBRE LA ADMINISTRACIÓN DE LOS
BIENES DE DIOS – Día De Los Fieles Difuntos: 2 de
noviembre - Para que donemos generosamente sin esperar
nada a cambio. “Aquellos que confían en El entenderán la
verdad, y los fieles lo seguirán con amor, porque la gracia y
la misericordia son para sus santos y su visita para sus
elegidos.” (Sabiduria 3:9). Aquellos que dan libre y
alegremente no lo hacer para ser premiados. Lo hacen para
mostrar su amor por Dios y sus prójimos. Pero, a causa de su
generosidad, ¡generalmente reciben más de lo que dan!
CARTA DE NUESTRO PARROCO
Queridos Feligreses:
Algunos que no son Católicos tienen dificultad para
entender la idea del purgatorio. Una razón que respalda la
doctrina del Purgatorio y orar por los fallecidos es simple sentido
común. Todos sabemos que no hay ningún egoísmo en el cielo.
Simplemente no existe, porque Dios es amor puro, puro
altruismo. Pero también sabemos que no todos, ni siquiera los
muy Cristianos mueren totalmente liberados de egoísmo y
tendencias egocéntricas. Por lo tanto, aquellos que mueren con
algunos hábitos egoístas y actitudes egocéntricas necesitan que
su alma sea limpiada antes de entrar en el cielo. Este proceso
de limpieza es conocido como el Purgatorio. En realidad la
palabra viene de la raíz latina "purgatio" que significa limpieza o
purificación. Esta purificación también puede tener lugar aquí en
la tierra. Una de las razones por las que Dios permite el
sufrimiento es precisamente para darnos la oportunidad de
aceptarlo y soportarlo con amor, como lo hizo Cristo en la Cruz.
Cuando hacemos esto, el sufrimiento se convierte en un
medicamento que disminuye nuestro egoísmo y nos ayuda a
crecer y parecernos a Cristo, a tener las virtudes de Cristo como
paciencia, humildad, fortaleza y sabiduría. Pero cuando
mantenemos viva nuestra amistad con Cristo en esta vida sin
realmente dándole ninguna prioridad, permitimos que los hábitos
pecaminosos y egoístas crezcan en nuestras almas como malas
hierbas en un jardín. En ese caso, después de morir, Dios tiene
que sacar la maleza y limpiar el jardín antes de que podamos
disfrutar plenamente de la Presencia Divina en el cielo - ese es el
doloroso proceso de Purgatorio. De esta manera, el sentido
común nos dice que la mayoría de nosotros va a necesitar una
limpieza espiritual después de morir y antes de entrar en el cielo.
Como dice el Catecismo: "Todos los que mueren en gracia y
amistad con Dios, pero aún no perfectamente purificados,
tienen de hecho la certeza de su salvación eterna pero
después de la muerte van a purificación con el fin de
alcanzar la santidad necesaria para entrar en la alegría del
cielo. La iglesia da el nombre de purgatorio a esta
purificación final de los elegidos, que es completamente
distinta del castigo de los condenados."
Dios Padre amoroso, tu poder nos dió a luz. Tu providencia
guía nuestras vidas y por tu divina voluntad volvemos a ser
polvo.
Te pedimos por nuestros queridos difuntos, especialmente
por [nombre]. Permite que todos aquellos que han
compartido momentos en nuestra vida encuentren un lugar
junto a ti en el cielo. Te pedimos por todas las almas que aún
están en el purgatorio.
Señor, aquellos que han fallecido, aún viven en tu presencia;
sus vidas han cambiado, pero no han finalizado. Te pedimos
por nuestras familias, amigos y difuntos para que fortalezcas
nuestra fe.
Te pedimos para que se regocijen en tu reino, en compañía
de Cristo quién murió y resucitó. Únenos otra vez como una
familia para cantarte y alabarte:
Dichoso sea el Cordero que fue sacrificado para recibir
poderes y riquezas, sabiduría y poder, honor, gloria y
alabanzas. Para el que está sentado en el trono, y el Cordero,
alabado y honor, gloria y poder, por siempre y para siempre.
Amén.
Otra imagen del Purgatorio es lo que sentimos al salir de
un cine a las 3 de la tarde después de pasar dos horas sentados
en la oscuridad y entonces, de repente, frente al ardiente sol,
nuestros ojos no están preparados para ese dolor. Este doloroso
ajuste es similar a adaptarse a la gloria de Dios, cara a cara, para
la cual no estamos completamente preparados. PADRE DAN

otro Caballero de Colón que pasaron el último fin de semana,
limpiando, pintando y lavando a presión el porche/cochera y la
entrada exterior de la iglesia sobre la calle Kempwood. ¡Muchas
gracias! Hicieron un trabajo excelente. Gracias a todos ustedes.
Tengo una petición de parte de ellos y de
la mia: por favor no traigan chicle a la
Iglesia. ¡Se ve tan mal pegado por todos
lados!

will be hosting their 3rd Annual Thanksgiving Dinner for those in

from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM and are asking for donations.
Donations needed: Plates, Utensils, Cups, Napkins, Foil Paper,
Mash Potatoes, Turkey Stuffing, Cans of Corn, Desserts, Can
Drinks, Bottle Water, Can Gravy and Clothing. Monetary
Donations will also be accepted for the Turkeys. These items can
be dropped off anytime between 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday
through Friday at the Church Office.
We will have tables set up for clothing for those in need. Please

BAUTISMO TIENEN QUE ESTAR
CASADOS POR LA IGLESIA?
El ser padrinos, no solo de Bautismo, sino de cualquier
Sacramento, representa a la misma Iglesia. No es solo
porque es alguien de la familia, conocido, o el que va a
pagar la fiesta. Los padrinos representan en ese momento
a nuestra Iglesia. Tenemos muy seguido solicitudes para
bautizar pidiendo que alguna pareja que están casados
solo por la ley civil y no por la Iglesia, sean los padrinos. La
respuesta es NO pueden, porque entonces NO están
representando completamente a la Iglesia. No juzgamos
por que se han casado por la Iglesia, eso es algo personal,
pero si están queriendo ser padrinos por la Iglesia es
porque van a dar ejemplo de vida a su ahijado(a) viviendo
su fe y recibiendo sus sacramentos. Los ahijados están

“viendo” en sus padrinos que el Sacramento del Matrimonio no es
necesario, y la realidad es que necesitamos a Dios en nuestras
vidas y dar ejemplo de su presencia en todo lo que hacemos.
INVITEMOS A DIOS A NUESTRAS VIDAS TENIENDO
TODOS NUESTROS SACRAMENTOS: BAUTIZO,
PRIMERA COMUNIÓN, CONFIRMACIÓN Y
MATRIMONIO. El amor matrimonial es donación. La medida
del amor es la capacidad de sacrificio, es amar sin medida, es
buscar el bien del otro: cuanto más grande el bien, mayor el
amor. Los hijos son la plenitud del amor matrimonial. El amor
verdadero no caduca. Se mantiene fresco y dura hasta la muerte.
El amor, ama hoy y mañana. El capricho, sólo ama hoy. Los
matrimonios son como los jarrones de museo: entre más años y
heridas tengan, más valen, siempre y cuando permanezcan
íntegros. Soportar las heridas y la lima del tiempo, y mantenerse
en una sola pieza es lo que más valor les da. El amor hace
maravillas. Toda fidelidad matrimonial debe pasar por la prueba
más exigente: la de la duración. La fidelidad es constancia. En la
vida hay que elegir entre lo fácil o lo correcto. Es fácil ser
coherente algunos días. Correcto ser coherente toda la vida. Es
fácil ser coherente en la hora de alegría, correcto serlo en la hora
de la tribulación. La coherencia que dura a lo largo de toda la
vida se llama fidelidad. Correcto es amar en la dificultad porque
es cuando más lo necesitan. Séneca afirmó: “Si quieres ser
amado, ama”. El verdadero amor busca en el otro no algo para
disfrutar, sino alguien a quien hacer feliz. La felicidad de tu pareja
debe ser tu propia felicidad. No te has casado con un cuerpo, te
has casado con una persona, que será feliz amando y siendo
amada. No te casas para ser feliz. Te casas para hacer feliz a tu
pareja. De ti depende que la vida conyugal no sea como una
fortaleza sitiada, en la que, según el dicho, “los que están fuera,
desearían entrar, pero los que están dentro, quisieran salir”. El
amor matrimonial es como una fogata, se apaga si no la
alimentas, cada recuerdo es un alimento del amor. Piensa mucho
y bien de tu pareja. Fíjate en sus virtudes y perdona sus defectos.
Que el amor sea tu uniforme. Amar es hacer que el amado exista
para siempre. Para perseverar en el amor hasta la muerte, vive
las tres “Des”: Dios. Diálogo. Detalles. Dios: “Familia que reza
unida, permanece unida”. Diálogo, para evitar que los
problemas crezcan. Detalles: de palabra y de obra. “Qué bonito
peinado”. “¿Qué se te antoja comer?” “Eres el mejor esposo del
mundo”. “Hoy, la cena la hago yo”. “Nuestros hijos están

toallas de papel, puré de papa, salsas, pavos, latas de elote,
postres, sodas, agua embotellada y ROPA (toallas y ropa de
cama también). Se aceptan donaciones en efectivo. Tendremos
mesas para poner la ropa que se donará a los necesitados.

PARISH COUNCIL DISCERNMENT - Nominations to
serve in this council will be taken up through November 16,
2014. The Parish Council represents the entire St. Jerome
community regarding issues that affect the mission and
growth of our parish. The term of service is for three years
and meetings are held once a month. Upon being nominated,
you will be asked to reflect and pray on this nomination and
discern whether or not you feel called to this ministry of service
and leadership. Those identified as nominees will be invited to

attend a discernment process on November 19 , 2014. At the

discernment you will further learn about the role
of the Parish Pastoral Council. That same evening a formal
discernment will be held. Please turn in your nominations to
the Parish Office or directly to Father Dan.
