Charter school

more space

The de Blasio administration has
denied 79 percent of public charter school
requests for facilities since a 2014 law was
passed to allow charters space in city-owned
buildings, according to a new report.
The facilities law was passed three years
ago by New York State to ensure charter
schools had a fair chance at available public
space. The report from pro-charter advocacy
group Families for Excellent Schools (FES)
indicated that since then, the city’s public
charter schools have submitted 105 requests
for public facilities, of which only 22 were
approved.
With more than 90 percent of these
rejections, adequate public space existed
to support a co-location in the same school
district, the report said.
Charter advocates, who gathered at City
Hall on March 2 to announce the report,
said the city’s actions have hindered schools
from opening new locations in high-need
communities.

Michael Bloomberg was still in ofﬁce.
After appealing to the New York
State Education Department, Public
Prep secured private space, which was
almost lost after the city’s Department
of Education contested the state’s

“We were going to have to tell over
200 families ‘Sorry, there’s no place
for you to go,’” recalled Rowe. “It was
devastating. We had our school on the
chopping block.”

of their private space, South Bronx Classical
Charter School was forced to cut down
enrollment for the current school year. Instead
of offering 90 seats in their most recent lottery
as planned, the school could only admit 30
new students despite receiving over 2,000
applications.
“Our kids deserve better than this,” she said.

me in my grief. I had no
idea if she would entertain
such a project or feel it was
below her standards to work on a book
for children—though I called it a book
about death for children of all ages.
She instantly responded that she would
love to collaborate with me, but she
would have to see the text first.
Now that the book is published, I look
at Sabra’s intriguing cover art, and I
feel the ascription should read “as told
to Julia Álvarez “ by the wind, the rain,
the flamingoes, the stars, the bits and
pieces of all those I’ve loved and lost,
and who come alive for me as I turn
the pages of this book I wrote down
to accompany those who grieve.

thoughts on how her new book Where Do
They Go? came to her. Here is an excerpt.
It was late autumn. I was jogging down our
deserted country road. I found myself shouting
the question in a whole range of emotions from
fury to self-indulgence. The chill was in the air,
the sky was grey with November clouds, the wind
was edged with the chill of the coming winter.

I couldn’t yet muster the ambition, the animo,

of SOMOS, Inc., we invite all to attend our
upcoming conference, which will take place
from March 24 through March 26 in Albany,
New York.
This year we are celebrating our 30th
anniversary as an organization.
And just this past year, a very important
decision was taken by our board. That
decision consisted of an overall unanimous
vote to change our corporate name from
“SOMOS el Futuro” to “SOMOS.”
For one, that is what you all have come to
call us over the years.
But secondly and more important, this
change signiﬁes for us a true change in the
status of our community in our society.
It is no longer a change that will occur
sometime in the future, it is in fact an
evolution that has happened over time and
that will continue to evolve. From “SOMOS
Uno” to “SOMOS el Futuro” to now
“SOMOS,” we believe that this evolution is
captured in our new name. .
Although we may still have a long way
to go, our journey is not as long as it was 30
years ago.
The board acknowledges the ﬁne
collaboration that we have with the NYS
Puerto Rican and Hispanic Assembly
and Senate Task Force and the number of
increased of elected representatives that we
now have compared to three decades ago.
Despite not yet having achieved all
of our goals, we acknowledge
and afﬁrm today that we are
a force to be contended with
and one that represents
our
diverse
Hispanic
communities.
As such, we take great

ARE a reality and that as we
continue our journey into
full representation, WE ARE to be counted

the Task Force’s legislative conferences,

Trump Travel Ban 2.0

On Mon., Mar. 6th, Trump signed a new
executive order that bans immigration from
six Muslim-majority countries and reinstates
a temporary ban on all refugees.
Trump’s original travel ban was announced
in January, causing chaos at U.S. airports
before the order was eventually blocked by
federal courts.
Critics denounced the
restriction as discriminatory.

The latest executive order prevents
travelers and immigrants from Libya, Iran,
Somalia, Yemen, Sudan and Syria from
obtaining a visa for at least 90 days and halts
admission of refugees for 120 days.
Unlike the original travel ban, the updated
order does not include Iraq. Meant to avoid
the legal challenges levied against the original
order, the new ban also excludes green-card
holders and no longer bars Syrian refugees
indeﬁnitely.
Iraq’s removal from the list was based on an
extensive State Department review to improve
vetting of Iraqi citizens in
collaboration with the Iraqi
government,
according
to Secretary of State Rex
Tillerson.
“The
United
States
welcomes this kind of close
cooperation,” Tillerson said.
“This revised order will
bolster the security of the
United States and our allies.”
The new order is slated to
take effect on March 16, a
departure from the original
ban, which went into effect

implementation of the original
order helped fuel chaos

a screening of The Obama Years: The Power
of Words at The National Jazz Museum

do not need to be re-branded for the sake of

clean energy. The report, from
the Natural Resources Defense
Council (NRDC) and Riverkeeper,
says the power can be replaced by
a combination of increased energy
efﬁciency, wind and solar, and
transmission-system upgrades.
According to Jackson Morris, Director
of Eastern Energy at the NRDC, New York
State’s Clean Energy Standard, calling for 50
percent renewable energy by 2030, is critical
to achieving that goal.
“We have the strong policy we need already
on the books,” he said. “And so it’s just going
to require really smart implementation,

Banning the Border Builders

f you help build the wall, you can
take your business elsewhere.
That was the message of Public Advocate
Letitia James, who said she will introduce
legislation preventing companies that
construct President Donald Trump’s border
wall from obtaining New York City contracts.
The bill would bar ﬁrms from getting city
contracts related to construction, maintenance
and management.
“To all companies out there considering
submitting a proposal to help build this wall,
you have a choice — help build the wall,
a monument to racism and xenophobia,
everything that our country stands against,
or do business with New York City,” said
James at a press conference in Foley Square
on Tuesday. “We won’t allow you to do both.”
“The same cranes President Trump uses
to build this wall, cannot be turned around to
build our schools or our libraries,” she added.
A trustee for the city’s largest pension fund,
James said she’d also ask the Board of Trustees
to divest city investments from companies that
participate in the wall’s construction.
“It’s important to understand that there’s
money from New York City employees, a
number of them are immigrants, and their
money should not be used to build a wall that
is hateful,” remarked James.

Of those, 17 companies have involvement
in current or previous contracts in the city,
according to James’ ofﬁce.
The Public Advocate said she planned
on contacting those 17 companies to “let
them know about the consequences of doing
business with the Trump administration and
how it’s going to have an effect on their
bottom line.”
Christiaan Perez, Advocacy Manager for
LatinoJustice PRLDEF, said James’ proposal
represents “an alternate solution to resisting
what is a very oppressive and very bad”
policy.
Perez called on activists to organize to
ﬁght the marginalization of immigrant
communities.

osé Sánchez often doesn’t know
which end is up at work.
The Washington Heights resident has
worked as a delivery person at the Domino’s
Pizza on 181st Street and Fort Washington
Avenue for the past six years. Though store
employees receive a schedule at the beginning
of each week, Sánchez said it is a meaningless
document.
“You can have a schedule, but then they can

He recalled a recent incident where he
showed up for work at the 5 p.m. start time
listed on his schedule. However, the manager
had changed his start time to 1 p.m. without
informing him, claimed Sánchez.
“The manager said ‘Why are you late,’ and
I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’” he
recalled.
South Bronx resident Jorel Ware reported
similar issues at the Harlem McDonald’s
location where he works. He said he was
recently written up for being late, unaware
that his boss had moved up his start time.
“It’s ridiculous,” he remarked. “They say
we need to check the schedule every day in
case it changes. Then they can still send us
home early, and we don’t get paid.”

a paycheck at the end of the week,
stand with these workers and demand
justice for these workers,” remarked
James. “They can’t lead normal lives,
and it’s really unfair.”
“Ultimately, the reason people go
to work is to support and ﬁght for
their families, and that’s what today
is all about,” said City Comptroller
Scott Stringer, who likened the
crusade for fair schedules to the ﬁght

“Together we made a great stride toward
delivering fairness, but today there’s more
work to be done,” Stringer said.
Harmonie Higgins, who works at a
Chipotle restaurant, said she must give two
weeks’ notice if she wants a day off.

on the schedule and I have to scramble to ﬁnd
someone to ﬁll my shift,” she said.

book, Where Do They Go?
The book, intended for children of all
ages, invites readers to contemplate what
happens to the people they love after they
die. It is illustrated by Vermont woodcut
artist Sabra Field, and was translated
into Spanish by award-winning poet and
translator Rhina Espaillat (who is also the
author’s distant cousin).
Álvarez, who teaches at Middlebury
College in Vermont, explained that she was
inspired to write the book after the death
of her beloved older sister Maury, who
committed suicide.
It was a devastating loss.
“I felt as if I’d been sliced open, and
my guts poured out of me,” wrote Álvarez
about the experience in a statement posted
on her website. “Life, or the desire for it,
was leaving me. Part of us dies with the
death of people we love. All we can do is
wait and see what is left when our grief is
done with us—if it ever totally is.”
On Saturday, she said she had come
to ﬁnd solace in everyday moments that
brought back Maury’s memory.
“One of the things that I wanted to
suggest through this book is that it’s ok to
have questions,” she explained. “And that
one of the ways we can make ourselves
feel better when we lose someone is to ﬁnd
them in what’s still there in our lives. In
surprising new places.”
Word Up Community Bookshop, Seven
Stories Press, and the Sugar Hill Children’s
Museum sponsored the event.

“Seven Stories Press published Julia’s
book,” noted Veronica Liu, who serves as
editor of the publishing house and also is
a founder of the Word Up
Community Bookshop. “The
community really wanted
her to come to Washington
Heights, so we thought the
children’s museum would be a
perfect venue. We strive to give
communities access to great books.”
After the reading, attendees lined up
to meet and speak with the author.
The winding line of readers snaked
its way through the main corridor,
which was outﬁtted with small
stations of puzzles and toys for the
youngest in the group.
Many in attendance clutched
well-worn copies of many of
Álvarez’s older books, including her ﬁrst
novel, How the García Girls Lost Their
Accents, which was published in 1991.
Others held up her second novel, In the Time
of the Butterﬂies, which chronicled the lives
of the Mirabal Sisters, who fought against
the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican
Republic, followed in 1994.
“I read her books dedicated to adults, but
my daughter reads her children’s
and young adult books,” said

Corporation will conduct a lottery
for 12 two week scholarships to
Columbia University's Little Lions
Camp this summer.The scholarships are
for Community District 9 residents
only. Community District 9 runs
from 110th Street until 155th Street
from the Hudson River to an eastern
boundary along Manhattan, Morningside,
St. Nicholas, Bradhurst and Edgecombe Avenue.
Winning applicants will receive a free two-week session
between June 12 and August 18. The camp is for children
between the ages of 6-12. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on
Thursday, March 16. Selected recipients will be contacted on
Monday, March 20.

intended, it will have several negative effects
on the food service industry in New York
City,” said Kevin Dugan, the association’s
New York City Regional Director. “For many
employees, one of the appeals to working in
the food service industry is the ﬂexibility.
This package unfairly restricts both the
employer and employee in scheduling the
work week that ﬁts best for them.”
The evening of the City Hall rally, Sánchez
and many of his co-workers at the Washington
Heights Domino’s Pizza location staged a
strike to protest unfair scheduling practices.
Employees who rallied outside the store
insisted that the manager had attempted to
reduce their hours and bring in new part-time
help when they appealed for better schedules.
Sánchez suggested that some were too
intimidated to join the strike.
“People are afraid they’ll get their hours
cut, or that they will be ﬁred,” he said.
Ware commented that large corporations
need to pay better attention to quality of life
for employees.
“We have a life,” he said. “The heads of
these billion-dollar companies are home with
their families, and we’re out making money
for them. They should have a little more
respect for us.”
