The season of Advent is upon us, and in today’s Gospel Jesus
delivers a simple message through the pen of Saint Mark: “Be
watchful! Be alert!” Christian stewards understand what Jesus
meant when he said, “It’s like a man going away: He leaves his
house and puts his servants in charge, each with his assigned
task.” Good stewards realize that to each one a task is assigned
by God. They have been set in a particular place and station in
life, and have been gifted with unique relationships. How do we
respond to the tasks or cultivate our relationships in a way that
keeps us alert for the return of Christ?
OUR SACRIFICIAL GIVING

Holiday, the collection amounts for the weekend of

Dear Parishioners,
Can you believe it? It's time for Advent already!
Such a beautiful season, but it takes some extra prayers to
keep us focused on what this season is all about. Not unlike
the longer Season of Lent, which prepares us for the great
feast of Easter, Advent is the time of preparation for Christmas, another great feast of the church year.
Like Lent, which is overall a season of penance,
whose theme gradually changes from works of penance to
Jesus' preparation for his death, Advent begins with a great
emphasis on our preparation for the end of time, and then
gradually changes its focus on the preparation of Jesus' birth.
Above all, Advent reminds us that all of our waiting
and preparation for the coming of Jesus is not in vain. To
avail ourselves of the joyful news and graces of this Advent
season, we need to ask ourselves, " How can I keep focused
on preparing my heart for Jesus' coming amid all the busyness and heightened activity of the holiday season?
Advent is the perfect time for us to celebrate the
Sacrament of Reconciliation. You are welcome to come back
to church this Sunday afternoon, November 30th, at 4:30
p.m., for our Communal Penance Service, where there will
be several priests to hear confessions. The Seasonal Deanery
Penance Services for December will be listed in the bulletin
as well.
Father Tom
Estimados Feligreses,

SCRIPTURE AND STUDY
THE WORD IN OUR LIVES
First Sunday of Advent
Watch Out!
In Advent, we celebrate our hope that the Lord
might come more fully into our lives. The first reading from
Isaiah voices the hope of sinners for a redeemer. As sinners, we too hope for forgiveness. Unlike Isaiah, we know
that God has come to bring us back, when the Father sent
his Son, Jesus, to save us. And God’s power was manifest in
the raising of Christ from the dead. Our faith in Jesus leads
us to a new way of looking at the world. We can see what
God is doing as well as remembering what God has done.
The Gospel reminds us to look constantly for signs
of God’s work. Jesus says simply, “Watch!” Like the gatekeepers in Jesus’ short parable, we need to keep our eyes
open for him. Just as we expect people driving cars to turn
off their cell phones and keep their eyes on the road, so we
can stop looking for whatever makes us comfortable and
watch for ways to love others as
God loves us. When we only look
out for ourselves, we may miss
the signs of God’s presence
around us. Instead of looking at
the difficulties of life as obstacles,
we can watch for them as opportunities to stretch our faith, to
rely on God, or to show God’s
love to a friend. The recent retranslation of the prayers of the
Mass can be an opportunity to stretch our faith and our
understanding of the Eucharist.
The Corinthians were also watching for the Lord to
come. Paul encourages them (and us) by his reminder that
we “are not lacking in any spiritual gift” (1 Corinthians 1:7).
The Holy Spirit gives us all we need to help each other prepare for the Lord’s coming. They were thinking of Jesus as
coming in glory. Though we don’t see the full glory of the
Lord, part of that glory is his presence in the sacraments.
In them we celebrate not just the coming of the Lord, but
his working in the world. He shares his life with us in baptism, gives us his Spirit in confirmation and himself in the
Eucharist, heals us in reconciliation and the anointing of
the sick, and calls us to make him present to others in holy
orders and matrimony. You could almost say his second
coming is taking place now. Watch for it.

Solemnity of Christ the King
Theme: Jesus' kingdom is a kingdom of actions and
deeds, not merely of words.
Breaking Open the Word
Suggested text for faith sharing: Today’s Gospel
Step One: Listen to the Word
As you hear this powerful, disturbing reading today, what
words in it jump off the page for you? What image or idea
lingers in your mind now?
Step Two: Look into Your Life
Question for Children: Who are the people most in
need of help who live around you, and how can you help
them?
Question for Youth: What can you do (alone, with
friends, or with your family) to help those who are without
food, shelter, or have other needs? When have you seen
Jesus in the poor?
Question for Adults: As you grapple with this very
strong, direct and demanding Gospel passage, name the
people for whom you have cared personally or if there are
none, those for whom you will offer care in the coming
weeks.
