Fr. Anthony’s Faith Formation Corner
Matthew 5:13-16: Saltiness in Our Discipleship
Jesus continues with his famous “Sermon on the Mount,”
(Mt 5-7). Last Sunday we heard about the Beatitudes. Today we hear about
the disciples being the salt of the earth and light of the world. But what
happens if salt loses its saltiness? It is good for nothing, but to be thrown
ut and trampled upon (Mt 5:13). This is a good opportunity for us Christians
to examine the “saltiness” in our own discipleship: just as salt cannot be
un-salty, so a Christian disciple cannot be lukewarm. But the reality is that
or many Christians/Catholics, there was not any saltiness in their discipleship
to begin with. Religion for them is simply a matter of following certain rules
and regulations in order to obtain heaven and to avoid hell. In doing so, they
strictly view the Church as an institution that enforces these rules. Faith for them can be very stagnant as they go through the
same routine week after week, year after year. While these believers may faithfully keep the commandments, they do not
really experience any “joy” in their discipleship. They may think that they already knew and found God, but in truth they
have only known the
Church as an institution that gives them comfort and security. They have not experienced God.
Jesus challenges us to go beyond the superficial aspects of religion, to a more profound consciousness of the experience of God. I recall St. Teresa of Avila, the great 16th-century Spanish mystic, having said something to the effect that she
would like to empty heaven and hell so that people would no longer think about them, but that they would focus solely on the
love of God. Now, that is the type of “saltiness” that the Lord is asking of us. We are to have that “feeling” in our discipleship. While some people may view the term feeling in a pejorative sense, I think this term is very proper for our discussion. I
always like to use this analogy from sports: great players in any sport do not just play the game at the superficial level, but
they have a real feeling for the game. In the same way, we cannot just live out our faith superficially: we have to feel and
experience God… The Lord Jesus invites us today to find or to rediscover that saltiness in our discipleship. If we are able to
do so, then we can find joy in our worship—and we can certainly see that our Christian/Catholic faith is very meaningful and
beautiful!

young adults 18 years of age and

Certification in Pastoral Ministry at

Basic Certification is a process through which a person
gains the necessary knowledge and skills to communicate

Cuando éramos niños cantábamos efusivamente la canción Mi pequeña
luz (This Little Light of Mine). La letra de la canción, desde luego, está
basada en el Evangelio de hoy, en este estamos llamados como discípulos a ser la sal y la luz del mundo. Los niños no tienen dificultad para
compartir su fe; solo es cuando crecemos que preferimos esconder
