estallar y jugar con fuegos artificiales o “fireworks” dentro de los
límites de la ciudad de San Antonio es ilegal.
Si una persona es encontrada
manipulándolos puede resultar
con una multa Class C Misdemeanor que puede ser de más de
$2.000.
Por esta razón, el Departamento
de Bomberos de la Ciudad de San
Antonio anima a los residentes a
reportar cualquier uso de “Fireworks” dentro de los límites de la
ciudad a través del número (210)
207-0202.
Esta Fireworks Hotline estará
disponible el sábado 31 de diciembre de 6:00 p.m. a 12:30 a.m.
Además, se invita a los ciudadanos a visitar los despliegues de
fuegos artificiales profesionales
que se llevarán a cabo para cele­
brar la llegada del Año Nuevo.
Uno de ellos es la celebración de
la Víspera de Año Nuevo de la
ciudad, que es gratis, “Celebrate
San Antonio”.

FAMILY FRIENDLY FIRST FRIDAYS – Every First Friday,
enjoy the Hemisfair Art Market at the park, plus music, food and
fun activities to keep your whole family moving! The event will
take place on Jan. 6, 2017 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Hemisfair,

“DIEGO Y FRIDA: A SMILE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE
WAY” – The photography exhibit, presented for the first time in
2002 in the Museum eHouse-Studio Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo,
showcases the meetings and disagreements of this famous couple
in the 20th century. It is through the photographs of Guillermo
Kahlo, Peter Jules, Guillermo Zamora, Nickolas Murray, Edward
Weston, Manuel Álvarez Bravo and Juan Guzmán, among others,
that an extensive record exits that reveal intimate aspects of this
marvelous couple. The galleries are open Monday to Friday from
9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday- Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. until January 2017 at the Mexican Cultural Institute of San

ARTS SAN ANTONIO PRESENTS BALÉ FOLCLORICO DA
BAHIA – The only professional folk dance company in Brazil, Balé
Folclórico da Bahia was formed in 1988 by Walson Botelho and

La nicotina líquida para
cigarrillos electrónicos
es tóxica para los niños
Especial para La Prensa
Una niña de 6 años que
tragó accidentalmente nicotina
líquida destinada a los cigarrillos electrónicos de sus padres
requirió tratamiento médico
de emergencia inmediato que
incluyó intubación y una noche
de estadía en una unidad de
cuidados intensivos pediátricos.
El informe del caso único se
reportó en internet en los Anales de Medicina de Emergencia
el día miércoles (“Ingestión
Pediátrica Involuntaria de Nicotina de Relleno para Cigarrillos

“En esta instancia, la niña
perdió la conciencia casi inmediatamente después de beber
la nicotina líquida y a pesar de
la pronta acción de sus padres
y de los servicios médicos de
emergencia, aun precisó ventilación mecánica y admisión en la
unidad de cuidados intensivos.
Afortunadamente, fue finalmente dada de alta del hospital
en condiciones estables, pero
bajo circunstancias ligeramente
diferentes podría haber sufrido
un resultado trágico”.
La madre de la paciente había
llenado una botella vacía de ibuprofeno con nicotina líquida que
ella mezcló, usando una combinación de nicotina sin sabor
que compró en línea y glicerina
vegetal. El padre de la niña, sin
darse cuenta de que la botella de
ibuprofeno contenía la nicotina
de su esposa, le administró una
dosis a su hija por dolor asociado con un esguince en el tobillo.
Los efectos fueron inmediatos y
el padre entró en contacto con
el control de envenenamiento
y 9-1-1 en 5 minutos. Incluso
después de recuperar la conciencia, ella había alterado su estado
mental, su ritmo cardíaco cayó y
desarrolló vómitos, sudoración
profusa, contracciones musculares e incapacidad para controlar
sus copiosas secreciones.
Las concentraciones máximas
de nicotina líquida comercial no
están actualmente bien establecidas ni bien reguladas. Algunos
consumidores de cigarrillos
electrónicos han defendido el

Residents encouraged to
recycle their Christmas trees

The City’s Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD)
wants to remind San Antonio
residents that Christmas trees
can be recycled! SWMD will
provide nine drop-off locations
during the month of January.
The locations will be open
Jan. 7 and 8 and Jan. 14 and
15 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. If
a resident is unable to attend
one of the sites during this allocated time, they may recycle
their Christmas tree at the Bit-
ters Brush Recycling Facility,
1800 Bitters Road, or the Nelson Gardens Brush Recycling
Facility, 8963 Nelson Road,
through the end of January
during their regular business
hours.
Collected Christmas trees
will be ground into mulch and
provided to residents for free
on a first come, first served
basis at both brush recycling facilities. Mulch will be available
beginning Tuesday, Jan. 17.
SWMD reminds residents
with a green organics cart that
they may recycle the tree in the
cart as long as it completely fits
in the cart with the lid closed.
In addition, SWMD encourages San Antonio residents to
help keep our community clean
by not illegally dumping trees
before the sites open and not
placing them at the curb.

Holiday depression facts and how to cope

While many think the holidays
are the happiest time of the year,
there are a number those prone
to the holiday blues.
Christmas is the time of year
where people experience high
incidences of depression stated
the National Institute of Health
(NIH). Hospitals and police
forces report high incidences of
suicide and attempted suicide
during this time of the year.
Holiday depression can bring
different kinds of stressors,
whether it is financial reasons to
loss of a loved one, unresolved
conflicts between your family and
divorce. Self-reflection can also be
a big factor when an individual
feels a sense of personal failure
or has not achieved personal
goals throughout the year. Dr.
Josh Essery expounded that these
conflicts can lead to serious symptoms many should look into.
“Holiday depression symptoms
can be simple or go to extremes,
depending on the person,” Dr.
Essery told La Prensa. “You may
find it hard to sleep, or you might
find yourself to want to do nothing but sleep. Sometimes you
find yourself eating a lot more, or
you might find yourself not whipping up an appetite, feeling low
energy, withdraw from people
and not want to attend holiday
events. People can have all of
these or a combination of them.”
Psychiatrists, psychologists and
other mental health professionals report a significant increase
in patients complaining about
depression. One North American

of respondents dreaded this festive season.
Although these symptoms
flare up, there are some ways to
cope with these symptoms and
feelings.
Re-evaluate yourself positively – If you find yourself in a
place where you are evaluating
yourself in a negative light and
you are feeling badly about some
aspect of your personal image
throughout the year, consider
certain things that you are not
giving yourself. It is important
to ask another person to help
you with this and bring out what
positive things you bring to this
world. Sometimes, when an
individual is depressed, negative
self-evaluations tend to make
one evaluate themselves in an
unrealistic light.
Resolve conflicts – Focus on
any grudges that this depression
is representing, and/or if there are
any past feelings of hurt that we
have not dealt with. Try to think
about ways to forgive others
because the end result can lead
for an individual to feel more
compassion during the holidays.
Self-care – Our bodies and
minds are connected, and making sure that you are taking care
of your body is really important.
Get a good amount of sleep
with an average of seven to eight
hours, physical activity on a
regular basis and a balanced diet
of fruits and vegetables without
excess amounts of caffeine and
sugar.
Tips for co-parenting – If
a person is in a co-parenting
relationship or a part of a nontraditional family, it is important
that the parents of those families
manage their own conflict and
their own feelings for the good
of the child.
If you are in a co-parenting
situation, ask yourself if you are
interacting in ways that are loyal
to your children. Try to find a
way to settle old scores during the
holidays, and try to communicate
with children and other parent
fully and directly.
“In reality, the depression
during the holidays could be an
indication that the person should
attend to those conflicts before
they get worse every holiday
season so that the next holiday
season could be experienced differently,” concluded Dr. Essery.
Holiday depression is very common among Americans, but
there are coping mechanisms to enjoy the holiday season.

Danny Trejo confirmed as keynote speaker At Alpha Home Luncheon

Alpha Home – a local addiction treatment center – is
excited to announce actor
and producer, Danny Trejo,
will be the keynote speaker
at its upcoming 11th Annual
Doorways of Hope luncheon.
The event is scheduled to be
held on Thursday, Feb. 23,
2017, at the Omni San Antonio Hotel at the Colonnade
(9821 Colonnade Blvd.) at
11:30 a.m.
Earlier this year, Trejo celebrated his 48th year in recovery from drugs and alcohol.
He has developed a prolific
career in the entertainment
industry. From imprisonment
to helping young people battle
drug addiction, acting to producing and now a restaurateur,
Trejo’s name face and achievements are well recognized in
Hollywood.
At the luncheon, Trejo will
be speaking about his own
Journey to Recovery, highlighting his transition from
imprisonment to his life as a
devoted father of three and an
intervention counselor, both
roles that he says bring him
the most satisfaction.
“I was an addict and alcoholic and I know that road,”
said Trejo. “That road leads to
death, institutions or insanity.
I’ve been sober for 48 years
and have had a great, great
life.”
The actor grew up on the
streets of Los Angeles. Despite
spending the latter part of
his early adulthood incarcerated, Trejo has worked hard
to maintain a drug-free and
positive lifestyle. Upon his release from Soledad Prison, he
became involved in programs
aimed at helping those who,
like him, battled or are battling
drug and alcohol addictions.
“I love playing the bad guy
in movies, because the bad guy
always dies. That’s the real
world. If someone asked me to
play a bad guy that always gets
away with it, I’d pass,” said
Trejo. “That’s the very message I preach to youths who
are in crisis and in trouble…
the bad guy always loses and
the good guy always wins. It’s
the one thing movies and real
life see eye-to-eye on.”

recientemente destacó sobre el

dentro del rol regular de la
temporada 2016-17 NBA, el
cual le favorece para recuperar
energía y continuar ejecutando

“En partidos de gira nos
hemos visto favorecidos en el

sobre la duela, por igual en partidos locales, en los cuales nos
