Sat. ART Guatemalan artist Carlos Chávez presents
his recent work, Migraciones. He has always evolved
his art around human tribulations, especially the plight of
the indigenous in Guatemala and their need to migrate. This
collection invites us to migrate to a less imperfect world, be it
physical or metaphorical, real or unreal.
Scott Stoll, a North American sculptor and resident in Guatemala brings us Mujeres Fuertes. His latest wooden sculptures
honor the strong women he has met and admired during his
lifetime. Stoll is attracted to certain forms in nature, he selects
the finest woods in the region such as mahogany and conacaste to painstakingly carve his pieces. His work is focused on
balance and beauty and aims to awaken our senses and engage
the viewer in an emotionally sensuous experience. La Antigua

The 10X for textiles
workshop got a
sold-out crowd.
ANTIGUA 10X
In hopes of boosting economic activity and impact
in the Panchoy Valley and beyond, the inaugural
Antigua 10X Festival recently attracted more than
300 participants who heard from dozens of
successful innovators in technology, education,
agriculture, textiles and a variety of businesses.
by Vincent S. D'Agati
O
rganizers chose “10X” as the event name
borrowing from a 1970s computing term
stating that computer-processor speeds
will double every two years — which
turned out to be a severe underestimate.
Harnessing the exponential growth in computing
power, many entrepreneurs have grown their businesses not at 10 percent per year but at 10 times per year,
so-called “leap frogging.” Examples include Amazon.
com, Facebook, Google, Uber and Airbnb.
Sometimes these businesses did not require huge
investments in infrastructure, employees or capital.
Yet their founders learned how to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the internet.
Well, if this capability is globally available, why not
use these techniques to trigger business developments
in Guatemala? A few residents of La Antigua Guatemala have a clear vision of how these technological developments can lift not only the economy of Antigua
but of all of Guatemala. So Antigua’s own Christine
and Philip Wilson decided to leap, and the Antigua
10X festival was born.
More than half of Guatemala’s population is under 18, but the job market is simply not growing fast
enough to accommodate them. Based on statistics

funding and the like. Thus, the workshops were designed to encourage participation and collaboration to
solve problems. The participants were given a taste of
what this new mindset feels like.
Karl Ohaus, of LEAN methodology and President of Entrepreneurs
for Education Gabriel Biguria, join the Wilsons.
Antigua 10X
cont. from page 27
from the World Bank, Guatemala had less than 5 million people in 1960 and in 2016 it has approximately
16.7 million. The human potential exists, but the
means to achieve the necessary economic growth is
the challenge.
As the lion’s share of economic growth is centered
in Guatemala City, the organizers chose Antigua,
which is in the center of the Panchoy Valley. When
entrepreneurs in this sub-region take advantage of the
new technologies, there is a greater chance that other
areas in the country will follow suit.
Most of the participants at Antigua 10X, held in
November, were relatively young, about 30 years old,
and were experienced entrepreneurs or eager to start
their own businesses. In every workshop, participants
were repeating, “It is necessary to change the mindset.” Instead of looking to the government to provide
the solutions, let us be bold and let us do it ourselves.
Instead of facilitators giving long speeches, the
participants themselves took to the stage and offered
their suggestions to specific problems being faced by
new upstarts. A key component of exponential, economic growth is collaboration — this is the keystone
to open-source technology, crowd-sourcing, crowd58
The event also encouraged participants to design
techniques to measure social impact of their initiatives. Far too many attempts have been made in Guatemala (and elsewhere) to improve the economic conditions, particularly of young people, and there is little
evidence of success. To that end Oxfam’s Alica Robertson, one of the participants, emphasized the need
to measure results of these 10X initiatives. A common
expression in the science and business world is, “What
we do not measure, we do not manage.”
To get the juices flowing, the organizers of Antigua
10X put out a challenge. Individuals were encouraged
to submit existing projects and a panel would decide
which projects were most likely to succeed using this
accelerated approach. An on-line competition was set
up in August and September for companies and nonfor-profit organizations that are applying the principles of 10X. The criterion was to select a business
or nonprofit that demonstrates focus, strong team and
the ability to 10X.
Approximately 60 projects submitted proposals.
There were three finalists and one winner: Programa
Valentina by FUNSEPA, a nonprofit that recruits disadvantaged young Guatemalans to work in the tech
sector. Through efficient training programs and a market-driven model, it develops and places skilled talent
in jobs of value (starting at three times the minimum
wage) throughout the growing tech industry in Guatemala.
Programa Valentina’s goal by 2025 is to become the
most influential, open source training-and-placement
program in tech across Latin America. Programa Valentina won free one-on-one counseling sessions with

Hitendra Patel, managing director of Ixl, a firm that
specializes in guiding firms toward reaching 10X
goals. It also won $5,000 to expand its activities.
The plan is to have an Antigua 10X every year for
the foreseeable future. Already, one initiative is bearing fruit. A tech board was established to provide
leadership on bringing technology enterprises to Antigua.
What we accept into our mind becomes our reality. This event has demonstrated that there are hundreds of young Guatemalans ready, willing and able
to leap ahead.

There are really two kinds of optimism. There’s the
complacent, Pollyanna optimism that says, ‘Don’t worry —
everything will be just fine,’ and that allows one to just lay
back and do nothing about the problems around you. Then
there’s what we call dynamic optimism. That’s an optimism
based on action. —Ramez Naam

Human spirit is the ability to face the
uncertainty of the future with curiosity
and optimism. It is the belief that
problems can be solved, differences
resolved. It is a type of confidence. And
it is fragile. It can be blackened by fear
and superstition. —Bernard Beckett
