Methodist Hospital’s newborn babies
sent home in Christmas stockings

When the holidays roll
around, many people are
preparing to give out gifts
to loved ones; however, the
gift of life is one of the most
important presents you can
stuff in a stocking this season.
Babies born at Methodist
Hospital through the holidays, Dec.20-29, will be sent
home nestled in their own
Christmas stocking, something that will fill parents
holiday cheer. Dressing the
babies in a Santa stocking has
been a tradition at Methodist
Hospital for more than 50
years.
The babies are then brought
to their parents and have their
first photo taken in them. The
stockings eventually lead to
become treasured family keepsakes. For parents Jose Felix,
28, and Stephanie Lopez, 21,
having their newborn Jayden
Raphael during the holiday
season was described as one
of the best Christmas presents
they could ever ask for.
“This is one of the best
Christmas miracles that has
happened to me,” Felix told
La Prensa. “At Methodist, they
treated me like I was a part of
their family. They have made
this experience smooth for
both Stephanie and I. It was
a blessing that we chose this
hospital and not any other…
In the end, I am blessed that
our child came out healthy.”
Methodist Healthcare hospitals stated that they deliver
the most babies in San Antonio every year, especially
during the holidays. There are
an estimated 12,009 births in
the United States, stated the
U.S. Social Security Administration.
With the hospital delivering
children at a rapid rate, they
make sure that each newborn
has the tender loving care it
needs before being discharged
from the hospital. The newborn’s outfit for the holidays
includes a large red stocking
with a white cuff and a matching red and white hat.
The adorable outfits are
handmade by members of the
Blue Bird Auxiliary, the volunteer group at Methodist Hospital. The 10-member sewing
committee begins making the
stockings each spring. Volunteer Pam Schlegel has been
a part of the Methodist team
for seven years and enjoys
the time she has rocking the
newborns and describing it as
pure heaven.
“I worked for the Air Force
for 37 years, and after 30 days
at home, I found that I needed
to be involved in something.
So, I had a dear friend who
worked for Methodist, and
she recommended me to work
in the neonatal department,”
stated Schlegel. “I hope [the
parents] are able to learn what
a wonderful gift that these
creatures are…I hope that
they enjoy their stay here and
are aware that their babies
are well taken care of. I also
hope that they will continue
that wonderful care at home.”

home, they anticipate that

“When I go home, I would

addition looks like in the family to look out for, take care
of, and it is going to be a more
content environment in my
house,” concluded Felix.

CAST Tech announces application
period and principal selection

CAST Tech, San Antonio’s
first high-tech high school,
will begin accepting applications Jan. 3 for students
entering the ninth grade. An
in-district charter of the San
Antonio Independent School
District, CAST Tech is open
to students across Bexar
County. The first class of 150
students will begin classes
Aug. 2017, with additional
grades opening each year.
CAST Tech is a careerthemed high school focused
on coding, cyber security,
gaming, entrepreneurship
and more. Located on the
grounds of the Fox Tech
campus, with close proximity
to the city’s downtown Tech
District, the school will work
hand-in-hand with industry
partners to prepare students
for careers in technology and
business, where talent is in
high demand.
College coursework is embedded in the program, and
students can graduate with
30 hours of college credit,
industry certifications and
portfolios that feature longterm projects and other examples of their work. CAST
Tech students will have the
opportunity to learn from
industry professionals and
gain real-world experience
through company-generated
projects, job shadowing,
mentorships, internships
and job opportunities upon
graduation.
The unique school is the
first in a network of industry-led, career-themed high
schools known collectively
as CAST (Centers for Applied
Science and Technology),
which H-E-B plans to establish across San Antonio in
partnership with other industry partners and local school
districts. CAST Tech was
made possible by a lead gift
from Charles Butt of $2.6
million and an additional $1
million from H-E-B.
As campus renovations
are underway, the school’s
leadership team is also being
assembled.
“We are thrilled to announce that after a thoughtful selection process, Dr.
Kelly Flieger was chosen
to lead CAST Tech as the
school’s principal,” said Pedro Martinez, superintendent
of SAISD. “Kelly brings over
20 years of educational leadership experience focused on
building hands-on learning
environments that stimulate
creativity. We are confident
that CAST Tech and its students will thrive under her
leadership.”
Flieger has been working
with SAISD and alongside
industry partners including
lead partner H-E-B and Tech
Bloc in preparation for the
school’s fall 2017 launch.
“I am honored to have been
selected as CAST Tech’s principal,” said Flieger. “This is
an exciting time for our com-
munity and for the district as
we embark upon changing
the face of education for
students in San Antonio. Students at CAST Tech will have
the chance to experience a
true 21st century education.
Once our students graduate,
they be adequately prepared
to compete in a technology
dominated economy.”
The more than 20-year veteran in leadership and education most recently served
Alamo Colleges as a field
supervisor for the Educator
Preparation Program. Her
résumé includes creating
North East ISD’s DATA,
the Design and Technology
Academy magnet, at Roosevelt HS in 1998, which was
one of the factors she said
drew her to SAISD’s new
technology high school.
Flieger earned her doctorate in educational administration and master’s in
curriculum and instruction
from Texas A&M University.
She also holds a bachelor’s
in political science and Eng-
lish from Stephen F. Austin
University.
CAST Tech will strive to
admit a diverse class of students from various academic
backgrounds, income and
geography. There will be no
academic requirements for
entry and students will be
chosen by lottery. Students
interested in receiving a
hands-on learning experience
with an emphasis on entrepreneurship and technology
focused curriculum are encouraged to apply.

from Jan. 3 – March 10.

learn more about the innovative new school.

Nueva estación de Fire Department en Medical Center

Tomando en cuenta las
necesidades urbanas de la ciudad debido a su crecimiento
–económico y demográfico– la
administración municipal que
preside Ivy Taylor puso en
servicio una nueva estación de
San Antonio Fire Department
(SAFD) en Medical Center
que cubre una amplia zona en
expansión.
La apertura oficial de la
Estación No. 32, ubicada en
el 4839 Charles Katz Dr., se
efectuó el lunes y entró en servicio inmediatamente reemplazando a la antigua estación que
estaba en activa desde 1970 en
el 2235 Babcock.
El proyecto fue financiado
con un presupuesto de 5.7
millones de dólares, manejado
por Transportation & Capital
Improvements del gobierno
municipal.
La nueva construcción es
parte de un proyecto de renovación del Fire Department,
que en los próximos dos meses
incluye la renovación de 2 estaciones más.
La nueva estación está ubicada en la misma avenida donde
se encuentra McDonald House
y en esta área hay varias escuelas e instituciones de negocios del sector privado.
En la ceremonia de inauguración Ivy Taylor expresó su
reconocimiento a los encargados de la obra y a la eficiencia
del quienes sirven en el Fire

tries la vigilia se practica en la
ciudad de San Antonio desde

Roma.
Esta es la
historia de
cómo una
sola persona
con un celular puede

salvar muchas vidas.
Este año más de 4,650 personas han muerto tratando
de llegar de África a Europa,
según la Organización Internacional para la Migración. El
Mediterráneo es el cruce ilegal
más peligroso del mundo: Este
año ya han muerto mil personas más que en el 2015. Y las
cosas no parecen mejorar.
Los barcos cargados de inmigrantes salen, generalmente,
de las costas de Libia, Túnez
y Argelia para tratar de llegar
a Italia o Grecia. Una cuarta
parte de los refugiados viene
huyendo de Siria. El resto
proviene de Afganistán, Irak,
Sudán, Nigeria, Eritrea, y otros
países africanos y del Oriente
Medio. La mayoría son hombres (55 por ciento), pero el 27
por ciento son niños.
Hay barcos que, sencillamente, no llegan y todos sus
pasajeros se ahogan. Otros se
quedan sin gasolina, se pierden
o van a la deriva. Y ese es el
momento de llamar al padre
Mussie Zerai, un sacerdote
católico que huyó en su adolescencia del régimen militar de
Eritrea y que divide su tiempo
entre Italia y Suiza.
En 2003, Zerai dio su número telefónico a un periodista
que estaba visitando a un
grupo de refugiados procedentes de Eritrea y Etiopía
en un centro de detención en
Libia. Ahí, el periodista dio
el número telefónico de Zerai
a los refugiados y, eventualmente, terminó en una pared
en el centro de detención con
un mensaje: En caso de emergencia, llame a este número.
Las emergencias son frecuentes. Cuando el padre
Zerai recibe una llamada toma
todos los datos sobre el barco,
incluyendo el número de personas que lleva. Trata de
conseguir las coordenadas del
teléfono satelital que usan los
refugia­dos, y luego le da la información a la guardia costera
italiana y a organizaciones
de rescate. El resultado son
cientos quizá miles de vidas
salvadas.
Solo este año, más de 345
mil personas han llegado como
refugiados a Europa y esa co­
rriente no parece tener fin. Las
guerras en Irak, Afganistán,
Libia y Siria y la pobreza, el
caos y los regímenes autoritarios en varios países africanos indican, claramente, que
cientos de miles de inmigrantes
seguirán llegando a Europa
en los próximos años. La pre-
gunta es ¿qué hacer con ellos?
El padre Zerai tiene la res­
puesta: Hay que ayudarlos.
La alternativa, me dijo en una
entrevista, es luchar contra los
traficantes (de personas) y, al
mismo tiempo, tener canales
de inmigración legal. Esto implica un corredor humanitario
para los que huyen de la gue­
rra y la pobreza, programas
de asentamiento en terceros
países, visas humanitarias
y acuerdos bilaterales entre
países que expulsan gente y
los que los reciben.
Pero el ambiente político en
Europa no es propicio para
este tipo de soluciones.
Al igual que en Estados Unidos, en Europa hay un fuerte
movimiento antiinmigrante.
A pesar de que Alemania,
por ejemplo, recibió más de un
millón de refugiados en 2015,
en otros países se han cerrado
las puertas totalmente y, como
Donald Trump, proponen
muros y cárcel a los recién
llegados.
Pero con ese plan, los únicos
que ganan son los traficantes
de personas. Mientras más
restrictivas sean las políticas
migratorias en Europa, me
dijo el padre Zerai, más negocio para los traficantes de
humanos.
El padre Zerai calcula que
los traficantes ganan más de
mil millones de dólares al
año llevando inmigrantes ilegalmente de África a Europa.
Muchos de los inmigrantes
corren el riesgo de ser usados
en el tráfico de órganos y las
mujeres podrían ser vendidas
a bandas criminales para explotarlas sexualmente.
Sería fácil, e injusto, criticar
a los inmigrantes por tratar
de irse a un país que no es el
suyo. Pero, como dice el padre Zerai, lo único que están
buscando es una vida digna
para ellos y sus hijos. Y una
vida digna comienza con el
simple hecho de sobrevivir en
otro país.
La verdad, no hay una solución fácil y a corto plazo para
esta crisis humanitaria. Una
vez que pase el invierno y las
aguas del Mediterráneo se ca­
lienten de nuevo, volveremos
a escuchar de tragedias masivas en el mar. Pero lo que no
escucharemos en las noticias
es sobre los inmigrantes que,
gracias a una llamada al padre
Zerai, salvaron la vida. Por eso
le llaman el ángel del mar.

Just a Thought: Christmas memories
Today we
celebrate
Christmas!
Today brings
back vivid
memories
for me of bySteve Walker gone years,
opening
presents and listening to
carolers at our door singing
festive tunes. Who could forget songs like “Silent Night,”
“Oh Come All Ye Faithful”
and the classic, “Rudolph the
Red Nose Reindeer”?
Decorating the tree with
tinsel, lights and ornaments
is etched in my mind as I
grew up from child to young
adult and finally grandpa
status.
Back as a kid, I recall being really excited, waking up
early Christmas morning and
rushing down the stairs from
my bedroom that I shared
with some of my five younger
brothers. I tried to be the first
one under the tree. It was
my goal to get my hands on
the wrapped presents before
anyone else. Sometimes it
worked, and sometimes I
came in a close second or
even third.
Fast forward to Christmas
in the 90s with two granddaughters and two grand-
sons. Spending Christmas
with young grandchildren
became a whole new experience watching their eyes light
up as mine did many decades
earlier.
For a number of my teenage years, my mother and
father decided for whatever
reason to buy an artificial tree
in place of a real tree. Needless to say it just didn’t quite
generate the same excitement
as the real tree. We were used
to religiously changing or
adding water in the pan every
few days to ensure that it did
not dry out and cause the
needles to fall off or break.
Later when I graduated
high school in New York and
returned to Texas for college,
I did not come home every
year. After graduation from
college, I was off to Vietnam
where I spent one not so
exciting Christmas before
coming back to San Antonio.
During the 90s, I rekindled
the sheer joy of celebrating
Christmas with grandma
and the grandkids. One year,
Grandma Linda, the grandkids and I spent a lot of time
searching for a real tree and
buying ornaments, tinsel and
lights to decorate. The two
granddaughters, Jesse and
Nikki, made the final pick
on a Douglas fir that nearly
touched the ceiling. Little
brother Jimmy approved.
Youngest brother Sammy
was born a couple of years
later.
During that particular
Christmas, we took a stroll
along the River Walk, which
was lit up for weeks ahead of
time with lights and decorations along the banks with
boats ferrying tourists and
natives up and down the river. The boat captains pointed
out the various attractions to
the tourists. We also watched
the Las Posadas procession
making its way through the
path along the River Walk.
It is not uncommon to see a
number of downtown businesses decorated and lighting
up the skyline as well.
Like every other year, the
Alamo Plaza hosted a giant Christmas tree that was
completely decorated and lit
up with bright lights for the
public to enjoy. Jesse, Nikki,
Jimmy and I ecstatically admired the tree.
Remembering conversations about Christmas at St.
Gregory’s Catholic School in
Balcones Heights in the 50s,
I learned from the nuns that
Christmas Day, celebrated on
Dec. 25, is credited to Pope
Julius who instituted the celebration in 352 AD.
I also learned that the
Christmas season in Mexico,
for example, runs from Dec.
12 to Jan. 6, with one last
related celebration on Feb.
2. These various traditions
incorporate remnants of indigenous practice, customs
from Spain and novel Mexican inventions from the colonial period.
In 2009, Mexico hosted
the world’s largest Christmas
tree according to Guinness
at 110.35 meters (approximately 362 feet) high and
weighing 330 tons on Glorieta de la Palma on Paseo
de la Reforma.
With the bands of Christmas carolers strolling along
the River Walk and elsewhere around town singing
songs of good cheer, the
hope of a joyous new year is
foremost in many people’s
thoughts to include mine.

Vive una Navidad sin deudas

Con la llegada de diciembre, también llega el estrés
navideño. Se compra el arbolito, se decora, se pone luces
por toda la casa y después de
esto comienza lo “bueno”:
¡La temida lista de regalos!
Toda la gente anda como
loca consiguiendo la mejor
oferta porque la realidad es
que la mayoría no tiene el
presupuesto para gastar en
esta Navidad. Hay quienes
a la fecha de hoy no han
pagado la deuda navideña
del año anterior y aún así
serán los primeros en ir de
compras este año.
Sabías que el 55 por ciento
de los adultos en Estados
Unidos no tienen ningún
dinero ahorrado para gastar
en navidades, no obstante
planean comprar regalos a
todo el mundo. Pero, ¿por
qué la gente gasta el dinero
que no tiene? Hay varios
motivos: por cumplir, por
el qué dirán, por la presión
social, por culpabilidad, por
el acoso publicitario o por no
sentirte como un pobretón.
Sin embargo, ninguna de
estas razones justifica endeudarse y vivir pagando intereses por el resto de la vida.
Si eres de los que te preocupa, “¿que pensará mi suegra
si no le compro un regalo?”.
lo cierto es que, con regalo o
sin regalo, la suegra seguirá
pensando lo mismo de ti.
Este año te exhorto a que
no te endeudes y cuides tu
presupuesto. Regala solo
un detallito que muestre tu
agradecimiento pero que no
afecte tu bolsillo. Por ejemplo: Dile a tu hermana que
de regalo de navidad le vas a
cocinar tu especialidad y ese
día ella se lo toma libre de la
cocina. A tu mamá regálale
una foto de todos los hijos
cuando eran pequeños y
ponla en un marco bonito.
Te aseguro que este deta­llito
le tocará más su corazón
que cualquier otro regalo
costoso.
En esta navidad regala únicamente a quien lo merece
y te inspira de corazón.
Quienes te critiquen por no
recibir un presente son los
que le ponen precio a tu
amor y festejan una “Navidad
comercial”, mientras que los
que realmente te quieren se
alegrarán de celebrar contigo
una “Navidad familiar”.

FREE DAY AT THE SAN ANTONIO MUSEUM OF
ART – “Get your family and out-of-town guests out of
the house and into the Museum,” said Museum Director
Katie Luber. “Art is for everyone!” The Museum currently has two small special exhibits on view, “Carlos
Merida: Selections From the Permanent Collection”
and “The Magic of Clay and Fire: Japanese Contemporary Ceramics.” Learn about the Guatemalan-born
Mérida, who, despite his pioneering works remains a
lesser-known master than his friend and contemporary
Diego Rivera. Discover contemporary Japanese ceramics, which come from a long tradition that celebrates
both the utilitarian and decorative potential of fired
clay. Both exhibits are free to view. Sketchpads and

HOLIDAYS IN BLOOM – Tis the season for Holidays
in Bloom at the Garden. Enjoy seasonal displays that
include hundreds of poinsettias, wreaths and red bows
throughout the Garden. A 12-foot tall Christmas tree,
donated from Holiday Hill Christmas Trees, will be
decked out with natural décor that includes magnolia
pods and pinecones. The Carriage House sparkles
with giant ornaments and twinkly lights. Take a stroll
through the Orangerie in the Conservatory to see citrus
tree branches heavy with scented oranges, grapefruits
and lemons. Admission to Holidays in Bloom is included with general admission now through Dec. 31
at San Antonio Botanical Garden, 555 Funston Place.
FAMILY FRIENDLY FIRST FRIDAYS – Every First
Friday, enjoy the Hemisfair Art Market at the park, plus
music, food and fun activities to keep your whole family moving! The event will take place on Jan. 6, 2017

“DIEGO Y FRIDA. A SMILE IN THE MIDDLE OF
THE WAY” – The photography exhibit, presented for
the first time in 2002 in the Museum House-Studio
Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, showcases the meetings
and disagreements of this famous couple in the 20th
century. It is through the photographs of Guillermo
Kahlo, Peter Jules, Guillermo Zamora, Nickolas Murray, Edward Weston, Manuel Álvarez Bravo and Juan
Guzmán, among others, that an extensive record exits
that reveal intimate aspects of this marvelous couple.

SCULPTING TEXAN CULTURE – Explore the
imaginative and diverse culture of sculpture and other
three-dimensional arts in Texas. Meet local artists and
participate in hands-on activities, specialized tours,
demonstrations and family and community activities.
Activity leaders include partners from the McNay museum and Southwest School of Arts & Crafts. Wood
sculptor Marika will demonstrate wood sculpting.

Carlos Diego Ferreira suspended after failing drug test
UFC lightweight Carlos Diego Ferreira has accepted a 17-month suspension from USADA
after admitting use of a banned substance as
well as testing positive for a second banned
substance during an out-of-competition drug
test administered on April 29. He’s eligible to
return to action at the end of September 2017.

Oregon RB Royce
Freeman returns
Oregon running back Royce Freeman said on
Wednesday that he’ll return to the Ducks for his
senior year after several injuries. Freeman was the
Ducks’ leading rusher this season with 945 yards
in 11 games. He rushed for 4,146 yards over three
seasons with the Ducks, stated Oregon’s career
rushing list.

La Confederación de Norte,
Centroamérica y el Caribe de
Fútbol Asociación (CONCACAF) anunció las 14 sedes,
en 13 áreas metropolitanas,
que serán anfitrionas en la
edición 2017 de la Copa Oro
CONCACAF el próximo año,
del 7 al 26 de julio.
Las fechas de los partidos de
la Fase de Grupos, así como
las asignaciones de grupo de
los países clasificados que encabezarán los grupos, Estados
Unidos y México, también
fueron anunciadas para la
decimocuarta edición de la
Copa Oro.
El anuncio se realizó de forma simultánea de costa a costa,
a lo largo de Estados Unidos, y
contó con la participación de
atletas, músicos y funcionarios
locales, en representación de
cada una de las ciudades sede.
Entre ellos están el receptor de
los Arizona Cardinals Larry
Fitzgerald, la banda de rock
Kings of Leon y los alcaldes
de algunas de las ciudades que
estarán participando (la lista
está a continuación).
En la próxima edición de
la Copa Oro, CONCACAF
ha tomado medidas para expandir el torneo a mercados
emergentes de fútbol, hacién­
dolo más accesible para que
los aficionados puedan asistir
y formar parte del campeonato
regional.
En esta entrega, cabe destacar que cuatro estadios serán
sede por primera vez de la
Copa Oro: El Alamodome en
San Antonio, TX; FirstEnergy
Stadium en Cleveland, OH;
Levi’s Stadium en Santa Clara,
CA; y el Nissan Stadium en
Nashville, TN.
En 2017, diez estadios serán
sedes nuevamente de la Copa
Oro: AT&T Stadium en Ar-
lington, TX (2009, 2011,
2013); BBVA Compass Stadium en Houston, TX (2013,
2015); Lincoln Financial Field
en Filadelfia (2009, 2015);
Qualcomm Stadium en San
Diego, CA (1996, 2000);
Raymond James Stadium en
Tampa, FL (2011); Red Bull
Arena en Harrison, NJ (2011,
2013); Rose Bowl en Pasadena, CA (1991, 2002, 2011,
2013); Sports Authority Field
en Denver, CO (2013); Toyota
Stadium en Frisco, TX (2015);
y University of Phoenix Stadium en Glendale,
AZ (2009, 2015).

de los partidos se jugarán en
algunas de las ciudades más
populares, como Dallas, Los
Ángeles y Nueva York, la Copa
Oro del próximo año mostrará
el alto nivel del fútbol internacional en todo el país”.
Las fechas para los partidos
de la ronda de grupos para
cada ciudad de la Copa Oro
han sido anunciadas, así como
las cabezas de serie de los
grupos del torneo: Estados
Unidos (Grupo B), y México
(Grupo C).
El grupo A será completado
una vez se finalice la clasificación al torneo y la Copa
Centroamericana de UNCAF
determinará los países calificados de esa región en enero.
Los grupos completos y el
calendario entero, incluyendo
las fechas y asignación de partidos para los octavos de final
y el anuncio de la sede para
la final, se darán a conocer el
próximo año.
Hasta la fecha, siete de las
12 selecciones programadas
para participar han clasificado
para el torneo del próximo
año: Canadá, México y Estados Unidos de la región
norteamericana, así como
Curazao, Guayana Francesa,
Jamaica y Martinica, del Caribe, quienes competirán por
la corona de la Confederación
en julio.
Canadá, México y Estados
disputada cada dos años, es
el campeonato oficial de la
región a nivel de selecciones,
que incluye a Norteamérica,
Centroamérica y el Caribe, y
será trasmitido por las familias
de FOX y Univisión en Estados
Unidos en el 2017.
Al atraer millones de aficionados y televidentes en toda
la región, la Copa Oro es una
celebración de fútbol, espíritu
deportivo y cultura.
El ganador del torneo el
próximo año se llevará a casa
el título y un lugar asegurado
Unidos califican automáticamente para la Copa Oro
en representación de Norteamérica.
Las cuatro naciones del Caribe ya clasificadas lo hicieron
al ganar sus grupos en la fase
semifinal de la reciente Scotiabank CFU Copa del Caribe.
Los cuatro primeros clasificados de la Copa Centroamericana UNCAF del mes
de enero, que se jugará en
Panamá, también clasificarán
a la Copa Oro 2017.
Tres países adicionales del
Caribe, Haití, Surinam y Trinidad y Tobago, ya se han
clasificado para una serie adicional de partidos en enero.
El ganador de los tres países
caribeños se enfrentará el
próximo año en un partido de
repechaje al país que finalice
en quinto lugar de la Copa
Centroamericana UNCAF, y
así se determinará el último
participante de la Copa Oro.
La Copa Oro CONCACAF,
en la próxima Copa CONCACAF, un partido de repechaje
para clasificar a la Copa Confederaciones de la FIFA 2021,
en caso de que dos campeones
separados logren los títulos de
las próximas dos ediciones de
la Copa Oro.

Tim Duncan de nadador a súper estrella en la NBA

La ceremonia del retiro de
la playera No.21, número
que por 19 temporadas con
orgullo portó el alero y poste
estelar Tim Duncan, celebrada
en la cancha del AT&T Center, tras celebrarse el partido
San Antonio contra Pelicans
de Nueva Orleans (domingo
18 de diciembre) logró reunir
a los dos entrenadores que
Duncan tuvo en el baloncesto
colegial con Wake Forest University: uno en la persona del
entrenador Dave Odom, quien
lo dirigió de 1993 a 1997, y
Gregg Popovich, timonel en
jefe de Spurs.
De acuerdo a Popovich fue
el entrenador Odom quien
descubrió a Duncan y quien
lo convocó a unirse al equipo
de baloncesto de Wake Forest,
donde cursó estudios y a la vez
desarrollo sus habilidades en
deporte ráfaga.
“Tim en su primer partido
contra un equipo desconocido representativo de Alaska
no tuvo éxito yéndose en
blanco sin anotar puntos con
3 rebotes. Ello me desconcertó momentáneamente, por
perder ante un equipo donde
se juega poco el baloncesto.
Sin embargo, el programa
establecido me dio confianza
para seguir adelante rotándolo
en los siguientes partidos y por
consiguiente él logró superarse
tanto académicamente como
en el baloncesto colegial.
Hoy lo felicito porque logró
modes­tamente encumbrarse en
el mejor baloncesto”, expresó
Odom.
“En verdad que para mí fue
bonito ver que Tim Duncan de
nadador (en su natal St. Croix
Islas Vírgenes) con el paso de
los años se convirtió en súper
estrella y leyenda de la NBA”,
agregó Popovich.
En su discurso Popovich se
extendió entre bromas y acier­
tos, que fueron escuchados
atentamente por más de 18 mil
espectadores.
“Draftear (haber elegido a
Tim Duncan) fue una decisión
muy difícil, pero con buenos resultados. Han pasado
veinte años desde que Timmy
se unió a los Spurs y yo en
cada cumpleaños lo he complacido regalándole un pastel
de zanahoria. Tim siempre
fue exigente entre las filas del
equipo, ya que él demandaba
hacer de Spurs un equipo
grande, especial y ganador. El
Tim que conocí hace 20 años
sigue siendo el mismo ahora
que tiene 40 años de edad”,

El retiro de Duncan fue dado
a conocer el 11 de julio de
2016 y el martes 12 del mismo
mes Popovich convocó a los
medios que cubren la fuente
para agradecer la aportación
que Duncan hizo en 19 años
para San Antonio y la franquicia Silver & Black. En dicha
ocasión Pop vistió camiseta
oscura con fotografía de Duncan en el pecho.
Posteriormente, la alcaldesa
Ivy Taylor y el concilio del
municipio de San Antonio
declaró oficialmente el 21 de
julio como el “21” Tim Duncan
Day. Fecha que seguirá siendo
conmemorada anualmente.
Tim y Pop (jugador y entrenador) en 19 campañas
lograron establecer marca
de 1,001 partidos ganados
en la NBA, con 6 títulos de
campeón en la Conferencia
del Oeste, 6 finales de la NBA
disputadas, con 5 campeonatos ganados en las temporadas
1999 contra Knicks de Nueva
York, 2003 vs. Nets de Nueva
Jersey, 2005 contra Pistons de
Detroit, 2007 contra Cavaliers
de Cleveland y 2014 contra el
Heat de Miami. En la pasada
temporada 2015-16 NBA Tim
y sus compañeros guiaron al
pentacampeón a la conquista
de 67 partidos por 15 derrotas
en el rol regular.
Con ello, Duncan dejó un
legado y promedio de haber
ganado 50 o más partidos por
temporada.
Cuando fue elegido por San
Antonio en el Draft de 1997,
Duncan, al ponerse la gorra
de Spurs que le fue presentada
por el entonces Comisionado
David Stern, en breve dijo:
“Voy con Spurs para ganar
muchos partidos”.
Así agradeció Tim Duncan el apoyo que San Antonio le dio por
19 temporadas vistiendo el uniforme del pentacampeón Spurs.

amenizado con música variada.
H-E-B preparó esta cena al
mejor estilo culinario de su
cocina y el servicio atento
de más de 2 mil voluntarios
entre empleados de H-E-B,
de instituciones del sector
privado, agencias de servicio
comunitario e incluso familias
enteras de voluntarios que,
año con año, se reúnen para
servir las mesas y atender a los
invitados.

Rampage donó muñecos de peluche a refugio vandalizado

La empresa Spurs Sports &
Entertainment, propietaria del
equipo de hockey profesional
Rampage de San Antonio
(afiliado a la AHL), mediante
su promoción navideña “12th
Annual Teddy Bear Toss” (lanzamiento a la pista de hielo
de muñecos de peluche), con
la colaboración de su base de
seguidores, logró recaudar
miles de los llamados juguetes “Teddy Bear/Ositos de
Peluche” entre otros muñecos
de diferentes dimensiones, de
los cuales donó más de dos
mil unidades a un refugio que
fue vandalizado.
Por su noble gesto, Rampage, a través de su cuenta
de Facebook, recibió felicitaciones por parte de la agencia
no lucrativa Family Violence
Prevention Services, Inc.
(FVPS), que opera el refugio
The Battered Women and
Children’s Shelter, entidad
que fue la beneficiada tras,
lamentablemente, sufrir robo
de juguetes que se tenían
destinados para donarlos a
residentes de ese benevolente
centro donde mujeres y niños
maltratados reciben servicios
de vivienda, consejería y servicios legales que les ayuden
a recuperar la autoestima
individual y familiar.
Los aficionados fueron convocados a llevar muñecos de
peluche durante el partido
entre Rampage y el equipo
visitante Barracuda de San
José, lo cual cumplieron como
lo han venido haciendo por
tradición.
Los muñecos fueron lanzados a la pista de hielo del
estadio AT&T Center en el
minuto 9:33 de juego del
primer periodo, lapso en el
que el novato central Julien
Nantel lograba empatar el
partido con marcador de 1-1
goles.
Este evento se realiza en
otras plazas de la American
Hockey League (AHL) con
el mismo propósito: donar
los juguetes a organismos sin
fines de lucro que ayudan a
sus respectivas comunidades.
FVPS, tras dar la noticia del
robo de juguetes, recibió el
apoyo de negocios y agrupaciones que acudieron al llamado de tal forma como lo hizo

constantes actividades de
educación, desarrollo y entretenimiento, Sunshine Cottage
for Deaf Children presentó
una pieza teatral de Navidad
interpretada por los mismos
alumnos en Laurie Auditorium
de Trinity University.
La sede de Sunshine Cottage
School for Deaf Children está
ubicada en amplias y modernas instalaciones en el 603 E.
Hildebrand Ave.
Su historia contiene profundos sentimientos maternales.
Dela y John White son los
padres de Tuleta White, quien
nació con un una grave deficiencia auditiva en una época
en que la ciencia y técnicas
de enseñanzas especiales no
tenían los alcances de la tecnología actual.
Con la noble intención de

Top Christmas cookies to ring in the holiday season

Christmas is a special holiday that brings families together around the Christmas
tree whether it is un-wrapping gifts or eating a good
meal that you have been
anticipating.
However, what is a good
Christmas without some delicious cookies that you can
only get away with eating
during the holiday season.
La Prensa would like for
you and your family to try
and bake these two classic
cookie recipes to enjoy this
weekend, courtesy of Food
Network.
Throwdown Chocolate
Chip Cookies
Total Time: 25 minutes
Servings: 3 dozen
2 cups plus 3 tablespoons
all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
2 sticks unsalted butter, at
room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup dark brown muscavado sugar
1/3 cup light brown muscavado sugar
2 large eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
One 5-ounce block semisweet chocolate, chopped
into chunks, such as Callebaut
One 5-ounce block milk
chocolate, chopped into
chunks, such as Callebaut
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line baking sheets
with parchment or silicone
pads.
Whisk together the flour,
salt and baking soda in a
bowl. Place the butter in
the bowl of an electric stand
mixer fitted with the paddle
attachment and beat until
smooth, about one minute.
Add the sugars and continue mixing, scraping down
the sides and bottom of the
bowl until light and fluffy,
about two minutes longer.
Add the eggs, one at a time,
and the vanilla extract. Add
half of the flour mixture and
mix until just incorporated.
Add the remaining flour mixture, again mixing until just
combined. Remove the bowl
from the stand and fold in the
chocolate chunks.
Using a small ice cream
scoop, spoon the dough
onto the prepared baking
sheets, leaving at least 2
inches between each cookie,
and bake on the middle rack
until the cookies are lightly
golden brown and still soft
in the middle, about 11 minutes. Let the cookies rest for
two minutes on the baking
sheets before removing them
to a baking rack with a wide
metal spatula. Let the cookies
cool on the baking rack for
a few minutes before eating.
Repeat with the remaining
dough.
Butter and Jam Thumbprints
Total Time: 1 hour 8 minutes
Servings: about 24 to 30
cookies
1 3/4 cups all-purpose
flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon fine salt
3/4 cup unsalted butter (1
1/2 sticks), softened
2/3 cup sugar, plus more
for rolling
1 large egg
1/2 vanilla bean, seeds
scraped from pod, or 1/8 teaspoon vanilla bean paste or 1
teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/3 cup raspberry, cherry
or strawberry jam
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line two baking
sheets with parchment paper
or silicone mats.
Whisk the flour, baking
powder and salt together in
a bowl.
In another bowl, whip the
butter and the sugar with a
hand-held mixer until fluffy,
about five minutes. Beat in
the egg and vanilla until just
combined. Slowly beat in
the dry ingredients in two
additions, mixing just until
incorporated.
Scoop the dough into
1-inch balls with a cookie or
ice cream scoop and roll in
sugar. Place about 2-inches
apart on the prepared baking
sheets. Press a thumbprint
into the center of each ball,
about 1/2-inch deep. Fill
each indentation with about
3/4 teaspoon jam.
Bake cookies until the edges are golden, about 15 minutes. (For even color, rotate
the pans from top to bottom
about halfway through baking.) Cool cookies on the
baking sheets. Serve.
You can store cookies in a
tightly sealed container for
up to five days.

Day For Night: an art appreciating experience

The second annual Day For
Night festival took place last
weekend (Dec. 17-18) in the
former Barbara Jordan Office
Post Office, 401 Franklin St.
and art enthusiasts were ready
to take Houston by storm.
Thousands of festival goers
were thrilled to go to an indoor and outdoor event that
was full of talented musicians
and artists who were ready
to showcase their visual art
installations. Walking into the
festival on a cloudy and humid
Saturday, many guests were
seen preparing for their weekend looking at their schedules
and enjoying music from Tee
Vee, Thundercat, Banks and
Lower Dens, as well as eating
from local food trucks where
they found items such as chicken and waffle sandwiches.
As the day got rainy and temperatures began to fall, people
were rushing to get a spot on
the Red Stage to get closer to
ODESZA and Aphex Twin,
whom ended the night with
lights, music and rain.
Cecile Alvarez, a 25-year-old
Austin native, said that Day
for Night was one of the most
unique festivals that she has
ever visited.
“I love going to festivals all
around the country, and I must
say that this one is more of a
collection of the true definition
of art,” Alvarez told La Prensa.
“No one understands that music stems from the definition
of art, and since visual art
was one of the first forms of
art, you are getting the full art
experience.”
The second day of the festival had many guests opting
to stay indoors due to dropping temperatures around
45 degrees Fahrenheit. Many
festival goers only went outside
for Ariel Pink, RZA featuring
Stone Mecca, Kaskade and
Travis Scott. The best part for
many attendees was that the
main headliner, Björk, who
performed DJ sets indoors and
interacted with a few lucky
guests. Based on observations
throughout Day For Night, being indoors was the best thing
the festival can offer.

Walking inside the former
post office, you felt as if you
are in a horror movie with the
flickering dim lights around
both floors of art installations;
however, it was anything but
that. Several art installations
caught your eye because a majority of pieces were interactive.
Nonotak’s “Daydream” required human movement to
keep the lights moving from
left to right. AV&C + Houzé’s,
“Phases,” introduced robotic
mirror arrays, folding complex
patterns into an evolving dimensional kaleidoscope. These
installations were the opening
acts for the main exhibit: “Björk
Digital,” an immersive exhibition of digital and video works,
resulting from Björk’s collaborations with some of the finest
visual artists and programmers
around the world.
The exhibition at Day for
Night allowed visitors to engage with her work through
the latest in virtual reality (VR)
technology. Björk believes that
by offering a private theatrical
experience, VR provides a
unique way to connect with
her audiences.
The exhibition included
“Black Lake,” Björk’s groundbreaking immersive film commissioned by the New York’s
Museum of Modern Art. Shot
on a remote, windswept beach
in Iceland and viewable in full
360-degree VR, the viewer ex-
perienced a one-to-one recital.
The festival ended on a highnote with a two-day event that
steered visual art in a direction
that made guests appreciate the
quality the festival carried in
Houston. This valiant image
of the festival can be used as
a resource for other festivals
to evolve into a more creative
approach rather than focusing
on only the headliners.
“It is our aim for Day for
Night attendees to be as en-
gaged as they walk from stage
to stage as when they’re watching their favorite band,” states
the festival’s website. “We
believe disassociating art and
music is boring. With dozens
of art installations throughout
our festival campus, you can
explore awe inspiring installations when you’re not dancing
to the music.”

El jugador de los San Antonio Spurs, Tony Parker, dio
a conocer el nombre de los
dos juguetones cachorritos de
jaguar que nacieron recientemente en el Zoológico de San
Antonio
Después de 14 semanas de
estar bajo la atención veteri-
naria, los pequeños jaguares
hicieron exitosamente su debut
ante el público y las cámaras
de televisión. En medio de
gran expectación del personal
del zoológico y un grupo de
visitantes tempraneros, Parker develó el nombre de estos
graciosos felinos – macho y
hembra – que ahora son la
principal atención del parque:
Liam y Milan.
B’alam y Arizona son los
padres de estas nuevas estrellas del zoológico local y todos
están inscritos a un programa
nacional de cuidado y procreación. En los dos últimos años
en nuestro zoológico, además
de otras especies, han nacido
tres leoncitos y dos tigres.
El basquetbolista tuvo
el honor de nombrar a los
cachorros después de ganar
el derecho durante el Zoobilation Ball, evento anual
del zoológico para recaudar
fondos. Esta es la segunda vez
que Parker nombra a animales
del zoológico. El año pasado,
Parker también nombró a tres
leones: TP, Axelle y Josh.
Tim Morrow, CEO de San
Antonio Zoo, dijo que este
parque zoológico es una de los
39 instituciones similares que
integran la entidad conocida
como Association of Zoos and
Aquariums, que administran

The San Antonio River Authority (SARA) presented the
trophy to the winner of the
second annual “Museum Reach
Deck the River” contest to Wyndham Garden River Walk Hotel
on Tuesday morning.
Santa Claus made a special
appearance to help SARA staff,
including SARA Director of Operations John Chisholm, deliver
the traveling trophy, designed
by local art glass designer Gini
Garcia, to Wyndham Garden
Riverwalk General Manager
Ashley Ciomperlik.
The contest was created to engage Museum Reach businesses
and organizations to decorate
their river-facing facades in
coordination with the annual
Museum Reach River of Lights,
which is currently taking place
through Jan. 2.
The public was encouraged to
visit the Museum Reach segment
of the River Walk to view the
contestants’ displays and vote
for their favorite online at www.
sara-tx.org from Dec. 3-18. This
year’s participants included El
Tropicano River Walk Hotel,

Derek Hough, is back and
better than ever in 2017 with

Keanu Reeves returns to the
big screen as the legendary
hitman John Wick. In this next
chapter following the 2014 hit,
Wick is forced back out of retirement by a former associate
plotting to seize control of a
shadowy international assassins’ guild.
Bound by a blood oath
to help him, Wick travels to
Rome where he squares off
against some of the world’s
deadliest killers. The new trailer, released earlier this week,
already has over 1 million view
In a preview, fans get to see
Wick back in action, a glimpse
of his dog and a first look at
Laurence Fishburne’s character. It’s sort of a reunion for the
two since they previously costarred in the “Matrix” trilogy.
Fishburne appears greeting
Wick saying, “The man, the
myth, the legend.” The cast
also includes Common, Ruby
Rose, Franco Nero, as well as
cast members from the original
film, including Bridget Moynahan, Lance Reddick and John

CineFestival announces
dates for 2017

The 39th annual San Antonio
CineFestival, the nation’s longest running Latino film festival
and San Antonio’s original indie
film festival, will take place Feb.
24 – March 4, 2017 at the historic Guadalupe Theater, 1301
Guadalupe Street.
The nine day event will feature
screenings, appearances by celebrity guests, panel discussions,
receptions, community events
and the Latino Screenwriting
Lab, a three-day script workshop
co-presented with the Sundance
Institute.
Festival passes are $60 and
individual screenings start at

Over 60 curated films screen at
a typical CineFestival, as well as
a Youth Program and a special
film program for the area’s senior citizens.
CineFestival has hosted many
of the industry’s important U.S.
Latino and Mexican films, actors

award, the Premio Mesquite,
will be given in the following
categories: Best Short Film,
Emerging Artist Award, Best
Documentary Feature, Best
Narrative Feature and Special
Jury Award. Films to be considered for competition will
be determined by CineFestival
programmers.
Highlights from past years
include celebrity appearances
by Gina Rodriguez, Luis Valdez,
Miguel Arteta, Guillermo del
Toro, Lourdes Portillo, Culture
Clash, Edward James Olmos,
Benjamin Bratt, Jimmy Smits,
Guillermo Gomez Pena, and
some of the new voices in Latino
film such as Aurora Guerrero,
Alex Rivera and Cruz Angeles.
CineFestival has played a significant role in the presentation,
appreciation and development
of Chicano, U.S. Latino, Mexican and Latin American filmmakers. Now in its 39th edition,
CineFestival will promise yet
another exciting run of the best
Latino independent films.
The full schedule of CineFestival will be released the first week
of January 2017.

The DoSeum is excited to
announce the selection of its
first ever artist in residence, local
artist and UTSA professor Ricky
Armendariz.
After a careful four-month selection process, Armendariz was
chosen for his unique and brand
new proposal for The DoSeum
this spring. Armendariz’s project
will bring to life visions of an
instructive, fable-like narrative,
grounded in the framework of
an interactive childhood bedroom.
The DoSeum’s artist in residence serves to support the
arts community by showcasing
the work of artists annually to
engage kids in socially-engaged
community art pieces, while
also providing art-centered educational opportunities. By
showcasing his work at The
DoSeum, Armendariz will serve
an integral part of creating joyful
learning experiences for San
Antonio’s children.
For his installation, Armendariz will create an oversized childhood bedroom tent
through a sheet tunnel that will
lead guests into a magical forest.
Armendariz will incorporate his
carved, hand-crafted aesthetic
to create a nostalgic, fable-like
story through which guests can
explore complex character-traits,
learning about and accepting
diverse characters.
“My goal for my residency
experience would be to highlight
our strengths as individuals and
how that can be a powerful
learning tool for young kids,”
said Armendariz. “I hope to
show kids there’s value in their
individuality.”
Armendariz’s unique proposal
for his upcoming art installation at The DoSeum is both
influenced by and a departure
from his previous works. Many
of Armendariz’s past works
utilize images that have cultural,
biographical and art historical
references that are then carved
and burned into the surface of the
paintings, drawings and prints.
Armendariz also often draws
from his time growing up in El
Paso, Texas to utilize images

from Mexican, American and
Indigenous cultures in his work.
Armendariz was selected over
the course of a four month review process that began in the
summer of 2016. This year, The
DoSeum focused upon local
artists; over 50 applicants were
considered. Armendariz was
selected from five finalists, who
included local artists Amber Ortega-Perez, Raul Gonzalez, Mark
Menjivar and Rafael Gutierez.

of programming and events in
conjunction with the display
of Armendariz’s artwork this

romantic comedy “La Fan” starring Angélica Vale, Juan Pablo
Espinosa, Miguel Varoni, Scarlet Ortiz, Ximena Duque and
Jonathan Islas, with Gabriel
Porras as Gabriel Bustamante.
Inspired by an original idea
by Vale, the series was written
and developed by Marcela Citterio and directed by Varoni,
Claudio Callao and Otto Rodríguez. Carmen Cecilia Urbaneja, José Gerardo Guillén

The project marks the return
to primetime series after more
than 10 years of Vale, who
plays the lead role of Valentina Perez, better known as
“Vale,” a fun-loving extrovert
and dreamer who has a tendency toward carelessness but
cautiously pursues her idol,
telenovela star Lucas Duarte
(Juan Pablo Espinosa). Valentina knows full well that she is
living in a fantasy and will never be close to her heartthrob
in real life, so she channels
her energies into creating the
