Vote Dec. 6 on a capital improvements referendum
that will not increase your tax levy

On Dec. 6, Middletown school
district residents will vote on a referendum that would improve district-wide drinking water, alleviate
dangerous William A. Carter

Elementary School playground
equipment and building signage
upgrades.
Middletown’s Board of Education
passed a resolution on Oct. 20 specifying the need for these capital
projects. Here is a closer look at all
three projects:
Drinking water safety
Middletown Superintendent of
Schools Dr. Kenneth Eastwood
described the issue around lead
and water as “problematic.”
“Now we have to meet certain
standards, guidelines, regulations
and laws,” Eastwood said. “We
promised six months ago that we
would resolve the immediate problems, which we did over the summer. We also said we would take
care of the long-term problem and
make sure there is no lead or contamination in the waters that students and staff drink, and that is
used for cooking. In order to do
that, we’ve included this in the referendum.”
Carter’s dangerous traffic
environment
The largest project would involve
Carter, where traffic along the East
Main Street entrance has caused
major back-ups and safety concerns during school hours for local
travelers.
“We’ve been having significant
traffic problems at Carter for a
number of years,” Eastwood said.
“We’ve been trying to resolve some
of this problem, understanding that
we’re somewhat land-locked at
Carter. So for the last two years at
least, we’ve been working with the
staff and the PTO folks, trying to
come up with some solutions that
would ease the burden. … As this
grows, the safety issues grow with
it.”
If the referendum passes, Carter’s
entrance would be moved to what
is now the back of the school. The
current front Carter parking lot
would be reconfigured as a busonly loop. The main office within
the building would be moved to
near the new front of the building.
The district would purchase two
parcels of land, which would enable
roads to be built and smoothly
accommodate this change. The first
is a 7.6-acre parcel off the Schutt
Road entrance. Staff and buses veer
to the left now, and take that road to
the back entrance and the 93-space
parking lot. The district would purchase land to the right inside of that
entrance.
In the new traffic pattern, a righthand turn road would be built to
begin a loop that extends back into
property the district already owns,
along the current staff parking lot,
the existing playground and to the
current back (and new front of the
building). The left turn road off
Schutt Road used now will be
repaired, and serve as the exit off
school grounds.
The second parcel of land purchased would enable the creation
of a left-hand turn and road at the
end of Wisner Ave. , through what is
now used as in-track parking opposite the grandstand at Orange
County Fair Speedway. The new
road would then turn right behind
the Wisner Professional Office
Building, and enter the Carter
property near the existing playground and current back entrance.
It would be a double-lane road,
with wide sidewalks and be lighted.
“It will be safe to drop kids off on
the side of the sidewalk,” said
Eastwood, who hopes the Carter
portion will be complete by
September of 2018.

Physical activity is such an important part of a student’s educational
experience at Middletown that it is
necessary to address Maple Hill’s
playground. Middletown’s student
population also has increased.
“There’s a playground that desperately needs to be renovated,”
said Michael Tuttle, Assistant
Superintendent for Administration.
“It is deteriorating.”
Carter also will receive some new

The referendum also covers district-wide drinking water improvements and Maple Hill Elementary
School site improvements. The
total cost is $9,625,000, but will not
increase the tax levy, Eastwood
said. The district will use $4,095,000
in fund balance and issue
$5,530,000 in bonds, which is subject to state aid as a capital project.
District residents can cast their
vote at the same location as they do
for the budget and board of education election. If you are unsure

iddletown’s district music program is nationally recognized,
and over the next several weeks
you will have the opportunity to see why.
Nearly 2,000 students – well, 1,845 to
be exact – will be performing in holiday
concerts throughout the district, beginning with the William A. Carter
Elementary School concert on Dec. 5 at
Middletown High School. These free
shows will run through January, concluding with the Maple Hill and Carter
Elementary Schools combined bands
concert Jan. 24 at Monhagen Middle
School.
We hope you can come out and see
our performing students, who range
from grades 4-12. You’ll be amazed by
their level of expertise, as most have
taken advantage of the opportunities
here to begin so young.
Junior Angela Fiedler was selected to
play her violin at the New York State
School Music Association Conference
all-state on Dec. 3 in Rochester.
Thousands of students auditioned for
this honor last spring, and she was
selected based on her perfect score for
her level 6 NYSSMA solo.
Fiedler, along with 10 of her fellow
Middletown High School musicians,
performed in a NYSSMA area all-state
ensemble Nov. 19 at Cornwall. All 11 students received this honor based off
those same NYSSMA solos.
The rejuvenated Marching Middies
have been quite busy, marching in
parades, performing at football games,
school pep rallies and adding a special
touch to school events.
Is it any wonder Middletown has been
honored with a national “Best
Communities for Music Education” designation for the last two years? The
award places Middletown’s music program among the top 18 percent in New
York.

Eleven Middletown student musicians
named area all-state
Eleven Middletown High School students
performed in 2016 NYSSMA area all-state
ensembles on Nov. 19 at Cornwall High
School.
These students were selected based on
the scores they received at last spring's
NYSSMA solo evaluations. They shared the
stage with the best musicians from Orange,
Sullivan, Ulster, Rockland and Greene
counties.
Tristen Collins, Krislyn Mazza, Naji Powe,
Autumn Kimble, Kiara Lynn and Takeena
Strachan performed with the Mixed and
Women's Choirs. Collins (10th grade,
tenor), Mazza (10th grade, alto) and Powe
(12th grade, tenor) are MHS mixed chorus
students. Kimble (12th grade, alto), Lynn
(10th grade, alto) and Strachan (12th grade,
alto) are MHS women's choir students.
Four students - Angela Fiedler (11th
grade, violin 1), Susan Cheng (12th grade,
viola), Tapply Mann (12th grade, violin 2)
and Joseph Grazioso (12th grade, viola) –
performed with the orchestra. Nicolas
Haines (12th grade, percussion) was in the
band.
The students were recognized at a recent
school board meeting, and those who
attended were photographed above. They
excel at MHS under the direction of Greg
Bennett, Megan Gugliotta and Robert
Gavin, and will appear in the December
concerts at Middletown High School.

Her hobbies: “I baby sit five children every Friday and Saturday. I participate in interfaith events and sing in my local church.”
Who inspires you: “My mother, because she has been through a lot trials and tribulations in her life, but she still keeps going on and is optimistic.”
The last good book she read: “‘Forge,’ by Laurie Halse Anderson.”
The talent she would most like to have: “The ability to draw.”
The world’s biggest problem: “People don’t show kindness and have determination to
make positive events happen.”
What makes her happy: “When I do good deeds for others, like opening a door for
someone and seeing them smile and say thank you.”

need, and just want a couple of

Breanna Ordonez is a Presidential Park Elementary School fifth-grader who is a well-round member of the National Elementary Honor Society.

poverty in our world. I feel we should make
more homeless shelters. Also, the amount of
pollution is getting way out of proportion.”
On her bedroom walls: “I have inspirational
things, such as a poster of my favorite soccer
player, Alex Morgan. My soccer/sports-related

Her favorite part of school: “Orchestra,
because I get to express myself freely on the
violin.”

State soccer tournament returns; District hoping for more events
he Middletown school district helped
bring an estimate $1 million into the
local economy over one weekend,
and will know within the next few months
whether more opportunities will be coming.
Middletown hosted the state public high
school boys’ soccer semifinals and finals
Nov. 11-13, with all five championship
games played at the Faller Field stadium
complex. That meant 20 teams of players,
their families, friends and community
members, converged on our area and
pumped big dollars into our community.
Middletown athletic director David
Coates said at least 15,000 people came
through the gates to watch what is regarded
as one of the state’s premier high school
events. The district has hosted this event
the last seven years, and is committed to do
so through 2017.
This was the 10th state public high school
championship event Middletown has hosted since 2010. The district will host the state
outdoor track championships in 2019.
Coates said the district is expected to
learn in February if the boys’ soccer tournament will remain here for another three
years. Middletown received a grant from
Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus,
through the tourism commission, which
will be used to offset the costs of holding
state events.
Middletown also has put in to host the
state football semifinal games for 2017 and
2018. These five games, considered East

Above: Senior Brian Ramirez and sophomore De’Ja Bowen will be the
top returners for Middletown’s indoor track team. Ramirez was a
state champion last year, as a member of Section 9’s intersectional
relay team. Bowen had a terrific sprinting year. She placed second in
the state as a member of the 800-meter relay team and was county
champion in the 55. Outdoors, she was a county and section champion in the 100, and was a freshman all-American in the 60.

he Infinite Campus Parent Portal
provides parent access to information for all enrolled students
in their household. Information may
include grades, attendance assignments, lunch account balances and
school announcements.
Below are some guidelines established Middletown school district
Parent Portal:
• Parents must comply with the
District’s end user agreement as well as
security requirements to assure the
confidentiality and accuracy of the
information provided in the portal.
• Qualifications must be met by
usernames and passwords, such as
character length and password
strength.
• Each parent and/or guardian of
each household should have their own
individual account rather than one
household account
• The accuracy of the information in
the portal is a shared responsibility of
the district, parent/guardians and students.
• Timeframes with regard to attendance and grade information will be
made available.
• The district agrees to provide free
and the most accurate student information.
• The district maintains the right to
add, modify and delete information
and portal functions.
• The portal is subject to electronic
monitoring by the district, as well as
other specific rights the district.
• The district can deny or cancel parents’ access with suitable cause.
• The portal remains the property of
the District.
