Since July 2015, the City has paved 8-3/4 miles of streets at a cost of just over $3 million.
With one additional paving project completed this fiscal year, the City has now paved 9.4 miles
of streets at a cost of $3.4 million. The City has completed the Residential Street, Major Street and
Alley Ways projects; and has finished 60% design of Future Pavement projects. Residents at the
newly paved streets of Ohio Street and Kenmore Avenue held a Thank-You Luncheon for the
council, staff and workers.
Complete Streets projects, where streetscape improvements include sidewalk extensions,
bulbouts, crosswalk treatments, street tree plantings, median expansion, and bicycle
improvements, create a comprehensive public health and safety improvement. The Complete
Streets Projects scheduled for construction in 2017 are the Maine Avenue between Arrow
Highway and Los Angeles Street and the Frazier Street Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvement
Project. The projects will bring over 2 miles of new protected bike paths as well as needed
pedestrian focused improvements such as widened sidewalks, striped crosswalks and intersection signal improvements.

You may have noticed that the City’s street center medians have not reflected the traditional green grass maintanence. This is because of
new laws, which have been implemented and designed to conserve water. Many of the major entrances into the City including Ramona
Boulevard, Baldwin Park Boulevard and Badillo Street, as well as, smaller streets such as Sterling Way and Amar Road have turf covered
medians.
As a result of the new requirements, the City has implemented the following

• Reduced City facility water use by more than 50%
• Turned off irrigation to all median turf areas
• Reduced watering of landscaping to only 3 days per week - medians and
adjacent roadways, parks, and other City facilities
• Restricted watering to the hours of 5 PM and 8 AM
• Require the prompt repair of water system malfunctions
The good news is that the laws allow for low-water landscaping and smart irrigation
systems that use considerably less water. Replacing high-maintenance grass and flowers with drought-tolerant vegetation is meant to help the
city conserve water, reduce maintenance costs and set an example for residents.
The City of Baldwin Park’s Public Works Department recently completed a design project that will bring new landscaping and smart
irrigation systems to the medians. The form and layout of the plants are visually aesthetic through texture and color. The proposed trees will
provide shade and promote heat reduction and beautify the City.
The plan calls for the removal of 150 trees citywide. The trees identified for removal are based on the conditions of the trees, which include
significant decline or lack of structural integrity, obvious or major damage or other conditions that suggest the tree is dying or dead. These
trees will be replaced will over 220 healthy trees that thrive under low-water conditions. Also, the project will see over 200 palm trees installed
along the Ramona Boulevard and Badillo Street corridors. This project will start in January 2017 and be completed by the Summer 2017.

Usted puede haber notado que los corredores centrales de la Ciudad no lucen el tradicional césped verde de mantenimiento. Esto es debido a las nuevas leyes

As the holiday season quickly approaches, preparations are underway to
coordinate this year’s “Santa Clothes Program.” In its 19th year, the program
provides over 300 underprivileged school children the opportunity to shop for
a holiday outfit. The Baldwin Park Walmart welcomes children and community
volunteers to roam the aisles and select clothing for the holiday season during
one special December morning.
La temporada navideña se aproxima rápidamente, se están realizando preparativos para

will be used specifically for this program. By sponsoring this program, you are
contributing to improving the quality of life for one of many children in need.

HOLIDAY STREET SWEEPING SCHEDULE
In order to allow the City’s residents an opportunity to enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday
season, street sweeping will take a short break between November 28th through
December 1st. During this break parking citations will not be issued to residents and
their family members who wish to park in the street. Routine sweeping will resume on
Monday, December 5th.

The City of Baldwin Park will be accepting applications for the annual Christmas Food Basket Program
open to Baldwin Park residents only starting Monday, October 24 through Thursday, December 1.
Applications are available at the Esther Snyder Community located at 4100 Baldwin Park Blvd. and the
Teri G. Muse Family Service Center located at 14305 Morgan Street.
In order to qualify, applicants must provide proof of income and residency. Availability of baskets is based on a first
come, first served basis. Basket distribution will take place at the Esther Snyder Community Center. Pick up times will
be designated at the time of application submission.

Students across Baldwin Park Unified are diving into their studies this fall,
taking advantage of our growing array of programs designed to prompt critical
thinking and analysis of real-world problems.
At our schools, students are focusing on science, technology, engineering
and math (STEM) with the expansion of classes in coding, computer systems,
as well as engineering and robotics. Our District is implementing top quality
programs that engage and motivate students to look into careers of the future.

Este otoño, los estudiantes del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Baldwin Park se están beneficiando de
cada vez más programas que incitan al pensamiento crítico y al análisis de problemas del mundo real.

Students are also engaging in forums regarding real-world incidents, such as the 15th anniversary of

world around us and allow students to discuss how they can become leaders who make a positive
impact on the world.

Baldwin Park Unified’s Santa Fe School celebrated its 25th anniversary
in September with a party for students, parents, staff, alumni and
community members featuring food, games, music and a photo booth.

Santa Fe offers a unique configuration in Baldwin Park Unified, serving
students in grades three to eight with a special focus on science,
technology, engineering and math (STEM) topics.

Santa Fe’s middle school students take courses in robotics and engineering. This year, the school
expanded its STEM program to include fourth-grade classes on energy, computer systems and

simulations. Parents and students sign commitment statements pledging their dedication to study,
support and ethics.

Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks during the school’s regular Friday Flashback activity.
very different perspectives on its impact on their lives and to thank those who have stepped up in
our protection since that day.”
Individuals shared thank-you messages to first responders and military personnel, their thoughts
about the event and personal memories on three posters displayed in different areas of the campus.
The remembrance effort was led by Sierra Vista social science teachers Wendy Payan, Ana Rios and
Jessica Englebretson.
Messages ranged from a teacher’s memory of the shock at seeing planes strike the World Trade Center
in New York City to Post-It Notes thanking firefighters and police officers for their heroism as the
Twin Towers collapsed. Those contributing their reflections were encouraged to take photos and share
their comments on social media with the hashtags #svthanksyou, #firstresponders and #armedforces.
“Sept. 11 was a major event in U.S. history, and when regular citizens were running away
from the chaos, first-responders and military men and women stepped up to save lives and ran
toward it,” Payan shared with the school community.
“The events of 9/11 have had a resounding impact across our planet and in all of our lives, even for students
who may not have been born when the attacks took place,” Superintendent Froilan N. Mendoza said.
“These tribute posters are a great way for our school community to come together and share their

Margaret Heath Students Remember School’s Namesake
Continuing a tradition that began more than
half a century ago, Margaret Heath Elementary
students honored their school’s namesake
by bringing bouquets of flowers and bags of
pennies to campus, celebrating Margaret
Heath Day in a special ceremony on Oct. 7.
Heath students presented the pennies, donated
by families and neighbors, to fund a scholarship
named for Heath. Margaret Heath was a
longtime educator, administrator and volunteer
for Baldwin Park Unified School District.
The Heath Scholarship is granted every
year to Heath alumni to help pay for their
college education.
Two $500 scholarships were awarded to
2016 Baldwin Park High School grads
Alexis Negrete and Jorge Romo. Negrete
attends Cal State Los Angeles and Romo
attends Cal Poly Pomona. Both Negrete and
Romo have younger siblings attending Heath.
“This is something I have looked forward to
since I was a Heath student,” Negrete told the
students. “I am so honored. I expect all of you
to never give up on your dreams.”
Margaret Heath was born in 1860 and became
principal of Central Elementary in 1913. The
District dedicated a new elementary school
in her honor, which opened in 1927. After she
retired, Heath suggested a student-funded
scholarship. Heath passed away in 1952.
