THAILAND’S MOST COLOURFUL FESTIVAL.

a escena tiene un punto
surrealista, incluso para
un país como Tailandia.
El último domingo de
noviembre, enormes
fuentes de frutas y
verduras, pasteles y dulces
se colocan con primor a las
puertas de todos los templos de
Lopburi, al norte de Bangkok.
En total, más de 4.000 kilos
de alimentos que tienen como
destino unos comensales
singulares, los 3.000 monos que
viven en el área, que degluten la
comida con fruición. A simple
vista, el Monkey Buffet Festival
puede parecer una tradición
ancestral, pero la celebración
es bastante reciente, fruto de
la idea del empresario hotelero
Yongyuth Kitwattananusont,
que en 1989 tuvo la ocurrencia
de dar un festín a los monos,
que en Tailandia están
considerados como portadores
de buena fortuna. Aquella fiesta
primigenia ha derivado hoy en
un colorista espectáculo que
tiene lugar, especialmente,
en el área de Lop Buri, donde
la dinastía Khmer levantó en

el siglo X un buen número
de templos hindúes y donde
los monos viven hoy como
auténticos marqueses. / The

even for a country like Thailand.
On the last Sunday in November,
massive platters of fruit,
vegetables, cakes and sweets are
carefully placed at the door of
every temple in Lopburi, north
of Bangkok. Over 4,000 kilos of
food are prepared for a unique
group of diners, the 3,000 local
monkeys that delight in the
feast. The Monkey Buffet Festival
may seem like an ancient
tradition at first glance, but the
event is actually a fairly recent
celebration, held annually since
1989 when hotelier Yongyuth
Kitwattananusont came up with
the idea of preparing a lavish
feast for local monkeys, believed
to be the bearers of good fortune
in Thailand. Over the years this
festival has turned into a colourful
spectacle held mainly in Lopburi,
where the monkeys live like kings
in the many Hindu temples the
Khmer dynasty built in the area
in the 10th century.

en marzo presentó Mujer océano,
su primer libro de poemas sobre el
amor y el desamor. El libro ya va por
su cuarta edición. En mitad de este
momento dulce, la cantane lanza el
18 de noviembre su nuevo álbum,
Munay, grabado en Los Ángeles con
Eric Rosse, productor de Maroon 5.

María de los Ángeles Rozalén Ortuño,
albaceteña del 86, es, cuando se sube al
escenario o saca disco nuevo, Rozalén
a secas. Y ahora tiene un CD y DVD
grabado en directo: Quién me ha visto y
quién me ve. Y verla ya la ha visto mucha
gente en España, Argentina, Chile,
México… «¡Me encanta viajar! –cuenta
con entusiasmo–. Cuando lo hago por
mi cuenta voy de mochilera y con
poca cosa, pero en las giras cada vez
cuido más la estética y llevo de todo.
Tanto, que ni siquiera me puedo
poner todo lo que meto en la
maleta». En su bolsa no faltan ni el
eyeliner ni muchos libros. «Siempre
creo que voy a tener más tiempo
para leer del que luego tengo», añade.
¿El viaje que más le ha impactado? Uno
que hizo a Bolivia, como cooperante a los 21
años. «Me cambió la manera de ver la vida». /
When Albacete-native María de los Ángeles
Rozalén Ortuño, born in 1986, takes to the
stage or releases a new album she simply
goes by Rozalén. And she now has a new liverecorded CD and DVD: Quién me ha visto y
quién me ve (If only they could see me now).
And see her is something that many people
across Spain, Argentina, Chile and Mexico
have already done. «I love to travel,» she says
enthusiastically. «When I do it on my own I
take a backpack and don’t pack very much, but
on tour I have to take increasingly more care
with my looks and I pack everything. So much
that I can’t even fit it all in my suitcase.» She
always carries eyeliner and books in her bag.
«I always think that I’ll have more time to read
then I ever really do,» she adds. The trip that
has impacted her the most? The one she made
to Bolivia as a volunteer when she was 21. «It
changed the way I look at life.»

Abierta, cosmopolita y cultural. Así es Palma, la ciudad
que acoge ELLA International Lesbian Festival, un encuentro dirigido especialmente a mujeres lesbianas y bisexuales que quieran despedir el 2016 en la capital balear,
en un ambiente abierto e internacional, disfrutando del
Mediterráneo y de la oferta de ocio de la ciudad.
Es la primera vez que ELLA Festival se celebra en invierno, aunque la cita lleva cuatro años en marcha, siempre
con la ciudad de Palma como escenario. Esta nueva edición invernal arranca el día 28 de diciembre y se prolonga
hasta el 2 de enero de 2017. Cinco días de ocio, cultura,
arte, deporte y diversión.
Durante esas cinco jornadas se desarrollará un amplio
programa repleto de encuentros. El día 29 tendrán lugar
las ELLA Talks, una serie de conferencias impartidas por
mujeres de reconocido prestigio del ámbito de la cultura,
la política, los negocios y el turismo, y abiertamente lesbianas. Entre ellas, estará Urike Lunacek, vicepresidenta
del Parlamento Europeo y activista por los derechos de la
mujer y el colectivo LGTB.
Un día más tarde, el 30 de diciembre, las asistentes podrán elegir entre cuatro opciones de ocio, según sus intereses: Ella Art, Ella Relax, Ella Helps o Ella Sport.
La primera alternativa incluye la visita a galerías de arte
y puntos de interés cultural en Palma relacionados con
la mujer. Por su parte, aquellas que prefieran un día más
pausado, podrán inscribirse en clases de meditación y
yoga Vinyasa, mientras que las amantes de los animales
visitarán un refugio canino para descubrir las condiciones de vida de los perros en Mallorca; la última opción
es la más activa: practicar deporte al aire libre.
Para terminar el año, el día 31 de diciembre, Ella Winter
propone dos actividades: una glamurosa cena con espectáculo, y la posterior fiesta de año nuevo. Al día siguiente, 2017 arranca con un brunch para coger fuerzas
y afrontar el nuevo año con energía antes de despedirse
de Palma el 2 de enero.

Lo suyo, hasta ahora, eran los papeles duros o, al menos, complicados:
amante de su propia madre en Savage Grace, pedófilo y drogadicto en
Hick, primera persona que se sometió a una operación de cambio de sexo
en La chica danesa… Él incluso bromeó en alguna entrevista sobre esos
dos primeros trabajos en el cine que compatibilizaba con los clásicos en el
teatro: «Tengo una trayectoria un poco bipolar. Estoy atrapado entre los
personajes isabelinos y los locos». Ahora, sin embargo, le llega un respiro frente a tanta intensidad: Animales fantásticos y dónde encontrarlos.
O lo que es lo mismo, la precuela de la saga Harry Potter, escrita por la
mismísima J. K. Rowling. Si la cosa funciona, tendrá el trabajo asegurado durante un montón de años y encabezará todas las clasificaciones de
los actores mejor pagados. Y es que los productores ya han anunciado su
intención de iniciar con esta película una nueva saga que, según Rowling,
su autora, tendrá cinco entregas.
La historia arranca en el Nueva York de los años 20. Allí llega Newt Scamander, mago que interpreta Redmayne y que pretende escribir la guía
de criaturas mágicas que da título a la película y que en el futuro se convertirá en uno de los libros de texto de Harry Potter y sus compañeros en
el Colegio Hogwarts. El resto ya pueden imaginarlo: fantasías, aventuras
y mucha magia. Tanta, que hasta su protagonista se acabó contagiando:
«Es extraño porque te sientes como si tuvieras nueve años. Me pidieron

Now, however, he’s getting a breather from so
much intensity in Fantastic Beasts and Where
to Find Them, the prequel to the Harry Potter
saga written by JK Rowling herself. If it works,
he’ll have guaranteed work for many years and
will lead all the best paid actor rankings. The
producers have already announced their intention of starting a new saga with this film, which
the author Rowling says will be the first of five.
The story begins in 1920’s New York. Arriving
on the scene is Newt Scamander, a magician
played by Redmayne who intends to write a
guide to the magical creatures of the title and
which, in the future, will go on to become
one of the textbooks used by Harry Potter and
his classmates at Hogwarts. The rest you can
imagine: fantasies, adventures and a whole lot
of magic. So much so that even the star caught
the bug: «It was so weird. Because when you
get to pick up a wand, your inner nine year
old is having the best moment of his life. But I
got absolute stage fright.» The actor also talked about the demanding exercise program he
was subjected to in preparing for the film: «I
had to train for seven months because there
was a scene in which JK said, ‘I want you to
take off your t-shirt so everyone can see

el momento más importante de su vida. Pero
también tenía un miedo escénico absoluto».
El actor, además, ha explicado el duro programa de ejercicio al que se sometió para preparar
la película: «Tuve que entrenar durante siete
meses porque había una escena en la que J. K.
dijo: ‘Quiero que te quites la camiseta y que se
vea que te han mordido y todas las heridas de
guerra que tienes’». Él obedeció y trabajó duro
sus abdominales pero finalmente esas imágenes fueron suprimidas del montaje final. «Es
probablemente lo mejor que podía pasar»,

Capricornio’. Y él me respondió
con su ordenador: ¡‘Soy astrónomo, no un astrólogo!’». Al científico, sin embargo, le acabó gustando

you have’». He obeyed and worked hard on his
abs but in the end, those images were deleted from the final cut. «It was probably for the
best,» he jokes now.
Much harder was getting into Stephen Hawking’s shoes for The Theory of Everything, a role
for which he won the Oscar for Best Actor last
year. Redmayne visited people suffering from
the same disease as the scientist, worked four
hours a day for months preparing his body and
even needed the help of an osteopath: «It was
really painful to twist in that wheelchair like
Stephen does.» He also studied his theories,
received classes from one of his students and,
finally, five days before filming began, had the
opportunity to meet the physicist: «When we
met, I was so nervous I didn’t stop talking for
35 minutes; I didn’t give him any chance to
get a word in edgewise as I was telling him
all the information I had found about him.
Then I stuck my foot in my mouth because
I said: ‘Stephen, you were born on January 8th, the same day as Galileo –but it
was really the day he had died– and I was
born on the 6th, so we’re all Capricorns.’ And he answered back
with his computer: ‘I’m an astronomer, not an astrologer!’».
But in the end the scientist did
like the film and told the actor
so as soon as he had the opportunity.
Another milestone in Redmayne’s life was his time
at Eton, the elitist British
school where he shared a
classroom with Prince William. «We played rugby together and were in the same French
class. It seemed completely normal
to me for him to be there. Well, perhaps it wasn’t normal but Eton isn’t
normal; it’s a place where everyone
wears tailcoats,» the actor has said. That
was also where he met his wife, Hannah
Bagshawe, who works in public relations
and whom he married in 2014. This year
saw the birth of their first daughter, Iris.
Upon finishing school, Redmayne
studied at the University of Cambridge.

el mundo lleva frac», ha comentado el actor. También allí conoció a su
mujer, la relaciones públicas Hannah Bagshawe, con la que se casó en
2014, y ambos este año han tenido a Iris, su primera hija.
Al acabar el colegio, Redmayne estudió en la universidad de Cambridge. «Era un estudiante algo perezoso y mi carrera, Historia del Arte, no
era muy difícil. Teníamos que hacer un trabajo a la semana y cinco clases», ha recordado. Su trabajo final fue sobre el azul Klein, color creado
por el pintor Yves Klein. «Soy daltónico, pero puedo distinguir ese azul
en cualquier parte. Escribí 30.000 palabras sobre él y podía haber escrito otras 30.000; no me canso del tema», asegura.
Sin embargo, su carrera sobre los escenarios había empezado mucho
antes. A los 11 años se presentó a unas pruebas para el musical Oliver,
que dirigía Sam Mendes, y le cogieron, aunque para un papel muy pequeño: «Decía una frase, estaba eufórico y aterrado. Esa obra fue como
un rito de paso», explicaba muchos años después, al igual que contaba

en un mapamundi el color

las fértiles llanuras chinas

de Yumen Guan, la Puerta

side, the Chinese of the Han
Dynasty from the other.
In the center, like a bridge
over a sea of sand, was the
region of Transoxiana, now
part of Uzbekistan. Its role
as a bridge, or rather as a
corridor, can be seen by following the color green on a
world map as it stretches,
with waning intensity, from
the fertile Chinese plains to
converge in the city of Yumen Guan, the Jade Gate
of the Celestial Empire; it
then skirts the Takla-Maklan desert to Kashgar, slips
through the Pamir mountain ranges and crosses the
Karakum and Kizyl-Qum
deserts as it heads towards
the Caspian Sea. This narrow corridor was the most
direct way between China
and the Mediterranean,
and whoever controlled
it held the key to world
trade. Which is why successive empires –Persian,
Arab, Mongol– fought to
control the route and their
cities enjoyed enormous
prosperity. There is one
city that always stands out,

When Alexander reached
its walls, he said it was even
more beautiful than he had
imagined.
Unfortunately, centuries of destruction
and the detrimental effect
of modernity have made it
impossible to see the city as
the Macedonian conqueror
did. Fortunately, however,
Samarkand is still home
to some of Central Asia’s
most impressive monuments that date back to the
fourteenth century, when
the legendary Tamerlane
made the city his capital; it
was later ruled by the Uzbek Shaybanid dynasty. The
Registan square is a massive open space framed by
three spectacular buildings:
the Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor
and Tilla-Kari madrasahs.
These three Koranic schools
are examples of Muslim architecture through much
of Asia, characterized by

Entre ellas destacó siempre una, que suma su nombre a un
glosario de geografía empapada de leyenda: Samarcanda.
Cuando Alejandro llegó ante sus murallas, aseguró que era
aún más hermosa de lo que había imaginado. Por desgracia,
siglos de destrucciones y el pernicioso efecto de la modernidad no nos dejan ver lo que vio el conquistador macedonio.
Por fortuna, sí conserva algunos de los monumentos más
impresionantes del Asia Central, construidos a partir del siglo XIV, cuando se convirtió en la capital del mítico Tamerlán
y después de la dinastía uzbeka de los Shaybánidas. La plaza
de Registán es un espacio grandioso que concentra tres edificios espectaculares: las madrasas de Ulugh Beg, Sherdar y
Tilla-Kari. Estas tres escuelas coránicas son ejemplo de la
arquitectura musulmana en buena parte de Asia, caracterizada por esos enormes portales llamados pishtak, una decoración exuberante basada en motivos geométricos, grandes
cúpulas revestidas de azulejos, suelos de mármol… Imprescindible es igualmente la visita al observatorio de Ulugh Beg,
a la mezquita de Bibi Khanum o a la necrópolis de Shanzi
Zinda, donde se encuentra el mausoleo de Tamerlán.
Dejando a un lado Shakhrisabz y Ferganá, dueñas también
de un patrimonio artístico soberbio, el verdadero sabor de
la Ruta de la Seda se encuentra en otras dos ciudades uzbekas tan antiguas como Samarcanda, aunque de resonancias
menos evocadoras. La primera de ellas es Bujará. Su centro
histórico sí conserva las viejas callejuelas, los tradicionales
zocos cubiertos y los caravasares donde los comerciantes y
sus animales encontraban agua y descanso antes de seguir
viaje. Lyab-i-Hauz, la zona que rodea uno de los famosos estanques de la ciudad, reúne algunas de estas fondas y es uno
de sus lugares más animados. Bujará también cuenta con
grandes espacios monumentales como prueba de su pasada
prosperidad: la mezquita de Kalyan, con sus 288 cúpulas y
el precioso minarete de 47 metros de altura que es símbolo
de la ciudad, la madrasa de Mir-i-Arab cubierta de mosaicos
multicolores, los artesonados de la mezquita de Bolo Hauz,

attractions are the Ulugh
Beg observatory, the Bibi
Khanum mosque and the
Shanzi Zinda necropolis,
where visitors can see Tamerlane’s mausoleum. Excluding Shakhrisabz and
Fergana, known for their
superb artistic heritage, the
true taste of the Silk Road is
found in two other Uzbek
cities as old as Samarkand,
though with less evocative
echoes. The first is Bukhara. Its historical center preserves the old streets, the
traditional covered souks
and caravansaries where
traders and their animals
would water and rest before continuing on their
journey. Lyab-i-Hauz, the
area surrounding one of
the city’s famous ponds,
includes one of these lodging houses and is one of the
most vibrant spots in the
city. Bukhara is also home
to spectacular monuments
that stand as evidence of
the city’s former prosperity: Kalyan mosque, with its
288 domes and beautiful
47-meter-high
minaret,
an iconic city landmark, the
Mir-i-Arab Madrasah covered in multicolored mosaics, the coffered ceilings
at the Bolo Hauz mosque,
the ancient walls of the Ark
Fortress... Khiva, meanwhile, is located on the edge
of the Kyzyl-Kum, a brutally unforgiveable desert dotted with oases and fortresses which marked the stages
for caravans in times past.

Lanzarote?
Para mí son únicos y están dotados de una gran originalidad. Para
hablar de los vinos de Lanzarote es
necesario destacar primero que se
trata de una zona devastada por las
erupciones volcánicas acaecidas en
el siglo XVIII. Sin embargo, gracias
al empeño y dedicación de las gentes de la zona, se logró implantar
una viticultura única en el mundo
creando una simbiosis viñas-paisaje
espectacular.
Con respecto a sus vinos, reúnen
unas características singulares derivadas de las condiciones orográficas y climáticas donde se encuentra
la isla, casi en el trópico de Cáncer.
Aunque hay diversidad de variedades, la Malvasía volcánica es la predominante. Se trata de una variedad
única en el mundo, que aúna lo que
se busca para elaborar un gran vino:
buen grado, equilibrada acidez, y

What is it about Lanzarote wines
that appeals to you so much?
I think they’re unique and highly
original. If you talk about wines
from Lanzarote you have to first
stress that it’s an area that was devastated by the volcanic eruptions
that occurred in the 18th century.
But the hard work and dedication
of the local people made it possible
to establish a wine-growing culture
unique in the world and to create a
stunning vineyard-landscape symbiosis.
With respect to the wines, they
boast singular characteristics deriving from the orographic and
climatic conditions of where the
island lies, almost at the Tropic of
Cancer. Although there is a diversity of varieties, volcanic Malvasia
wine is the main one.
There is nothing else like it in
the world and it brings together
everything you could want to make
a great wine: a good percentage,
balanced acidity and a highly aromatic quality.

Jiva, por su parte, se encuentra en la orilla del
Kyzyl-Kum, desierto terrible, salpicado por los oasis
y fortalezas que en tiempos
marcaban las etapas de las
caravanas. Fue la capital de
uno de los kanatos uzbekos
surgidos a partir del siglo
XVI y concentra tal cantidad
de monumentos que parece
un museo al aire libre. Itchan
Kala es el nombre de su ciudadela fortificada, protegida
por murallas almenadas de
12 metros de altura que se
remontan al siglo X. En su
interior acoge palacios tan
lujosos como Kunya Ark o
Tosh-Kovli, o las mezquitas
de Juma –famosa por sus columnas de madera cubiertas
de filigranas– y de Khodja,

fortified citadel, protected
by 12-meter-high crenellated walls that date back to the tenth century. Inside the
city walls are palaces like the luxurious Kunya Ark and
Tosh-Kovli, mosques like the Juma –famous for its wooden columns decorated in filigree– and Khodja, with the
city’s tallest minaret, although not its most spectacular.
This honor is earned by Kalta Minor, a massive yet short
half-built cylinder covered in blue and turquoise mosaics.
The Silk Road, the artery that fed the wealth of this region
for hundreds of years, began to decline in the fifteenth
century with the fall of Constantinople to Muslim forces
and the collapse of the Mongol Empire in Central Asia.
Trade was interrupted, and Europeans took to the sea to
get to China and the Spice Islands. The disintegration of
the region’s political power favored the Russian expansion in the eighteenth century, first commercial and then
military. Shortly after the Revolution, the vast region of
Turkestan was divided into several republics that belonged
to the Soviet Union. One was Uzbekistan, which regained
its independence in 1991. This recent past has created the
urban landscape of cities like Tashkent, the capital, and
Samarkand itself, as well as ecological disasters like the
shrinking of the Aral Sea, which is doomed to disappear.
It is also seen in the daily lives of Uzbeks, who continue
to use Russian as their lingua franca and practice an Islam softened by decades of Soviet secularism. However, to
walk the streets of Bukhara and Khiva, to sip black tea and
eat plov (rice pilaf) next to an old caravansary, to simply
say the name of Samarkand aloud, awakens the echo of

andadura. El estreno de Place au jeûne protagonizó su reapertura
y marcó el nacimiento de un nuevo género, la revista, y de la

music show on 30 November 1886. After temporarily closing its
doors, the venue reopened under new management with Place au

Limonada. A eso se dedicaban monsieur y madame Allemand. Elaboraban
y vendían limonada. A lo grande. Tanto que se habían hecho millonarios. Y
querían ampliar horizontes. Por eso
cambiaron Marsella por París y los refrescos por el mundo de la noche. Así
estaban ahora, mordiéndose las uñas
de nervios. Los carteles colgados en la
entrada de su viejo teatro anunciaban el
estreno del espectáculo Place au jeûne y
nadie sabía qué acogida iba a tener. De
hecho, nadie sabía muy bien cómo definirlo. Era algo nuevo, una mezcla de
canciones, intermedios cómicos y, sobre todo, números de baile protagonizados por un grupo de atractivas chicas
procedentes de Europa central, presentados por una pareja de anfitriones
que enlazaba las actuaciones mientras
repasaba la actualidad política y social
parisina. El año 1886 tocaba a su fin y
estaba a punto de ver la luz un nuevo
género: la revista de music-hall. La sala
se había llenado y la expectación era

and Madame Allemand did for a living: they made and sold lemonade.
Lots of it. They were so successful that
they became millionaires and decided
to broaden their horizons, exchanging Marseille for Paris and drinks for
nightlife. Which is how they found
themselves nervously biting their nails
on opening night. The posters hanging at the entrance of their old theatre
announced the debut of the Place au
jeûne show and nobody knew how it
was going to be received. No one even
really knew how to define it. It was
something new, a mix of songs, comedy acts and especially dance numbers
featuring a group of attractive girls
from Central Europe, hosted by two
masters-of-ceremony who provided
a strand of continuity between the acts
along with commentary on current
social and political events in Paris. The
year 1886 was coming to a close and
a new genre was about to be born:

Air Europa ha aumentado su flota con un nuevo
Boeing 787 Dreamliner, con el que opera ya a Santo
Domingo, y con el que se afianza y reafirma como
la aerolínea de referencia entre América y el viejo

El nuevo Dreamliner, que la aerolínea incorporó
a su flota a mediados del pasado mes de octubre,
aterrizó por primera vez en el aeropuerto Internacional Las Américas el pasado día 26, y desde entonces realiza el vuelo diario que conecta Madrid
con la capital de la República Dominicana.
El Boeing 787, con el que Air Europa vuela también a
Miami y Bogotá, ofrece a sus pasajeros una nueva experiencia de volar pues combina un excepcional rendimiento medioambiental con el máximo confort.
Especialmente diseñado para el largo radio, el B787
puede llegar a reducir el tiempo de vuelo en unos 40
minutos y sus avances tecnológicos lo convierten en
una verdadera y admirada joya aeronáutica.

denominated “Secure Flight” which is compulsory under the authority of 49 U.S.C.

la autoestima y, en
mí, tiene un efecto
desestresante.
Competí durante
algún tiempo y aún
hoy, a mis 60 años,
sigo entrenando

Choyu Hentona.
Todos los años

concentración que
realizamos un grupo
