From Fr. Mike

In Luke 19, Zacchaeus had none of the advantages that others have to see Jesus. He was a tax collector. He didn't
know him. He was short and couldn't push his way through the crowd. He had no friends to do him any favors. Yet whose house did Jesus eat at that night? Not any of the ones who could have easily walked up to him
and walked at his side. What was the difference? Zacchaeus took initiative. He didn't give up. He didn't let his
pride get the better of him or keep him from doing whatever he needed to do to be at Jesus' side. Let's look at what
Zacchaeus did. He climbed the tree to see Jesus. He didn't care if people made fun of him for climbing that
tree. He wanted to see. He knew he would need to change his ways so he did. He publicly confessed and said he
would repent and make restitution four times over to those whom he cheated. He publicly said he would give half
of his riches to the poor. Finally, he stood his ground. He wasn't going to let the ridicule and intimidation of others
keep him from Jesus. In the end, Jesus calls him over and says he will eat with him and stay at his house that
night.
Zacchaeus is a good lesson for us. Jesus is passing by us this moment. What are we doing to see him and walk by
his side. Are we willing to risk being made fun of by others because we are real people of faith? Are we willing to
change those areas in our lives that need to be changed so we can be true followers? Are we willing climb whatever
tree we need to climb and take the initiative and not just expect God to come to us without our cooperation and
effort? Let's commit ourselves to seek out Jesus and do whatever we need to do so we can walk at his side. Then,
we just need to simply take him up on his offer to stay with us and have dinner with us.

Some Mass Times Will Change After January 1st, 2017:
I realize that changes in the Mass times can be unsettling. People get used to the routines and it takes a
while to get used to new ones. Still, after much consideration it seems that some adjustments to the Mass
times are necessary to accomplish a few things. I have noticed from the first weekend moving here that our
Saturday night Masses are rushed and we don't have the time between them to prepare for the following
one. Therefore, we will be moving up the English 5:30 pm Mass to 5:00 pm. This will accomplish a few
things. First of all it will give us enough time so that we can be present at Mass without the feeling that we
need to rush. It will give us enough time after Mass to leave the parking lot so there isn't a log jam of cars
coming and going at the same time. It will help our Spanish Mass to start on time. Finally, it will enable
slightly more light on Friday nights for our elderly parishioners.
The other change will be moving our Sunday Spanish Mass to 12:00 pm. This will accomplish some goals as
well. Right now we don't have enough time between the Sunday Masses to do trainings, classes, workshops,
missions, breakfasts or social events. We really noticed this when we were trying to find times to train different ministries in English and Spanish. With this change we will have an hour and a half between the
Masses rather than the half hour we currently have. This will give me and others the ability to do not only
focus on the Sunday Masses, but it will also allow the time we need to focus on adult faith formation and
classes in English and in Spanish since right now we don't have the time or the space to do it.
As you probably realize, I am not changing the Masses to make my life easier. It will mean that I am doing
more and offering more for the sake of the parish. It really is a matter of me wanting to provide better liturgy and more opportunities to come to know and live the faith. I don't make these changes lightly and
realize that not everyone will be thrilled to adjust their schedules but I do ask for your patience and understanding in the transition. I hope that you are all able to see that I am doing it to add life and programs
that would not be possible otherwise. Please make a note that the weekend Masses as of January 1st will
be:
Saturday: 5:00 pm (English) and 7:00 pm (Spanish)
Sunday: 9:00 am (English and 12:00 (Spanish).
a tiempo.

Dear St. James Families,
We're selling poinsettias again! KRAEMER’S GARDEN will, once again, be providing fine plants for our sale
this year! Kraemer's has been helping Willamette Valley gardeners nurture and grow their garden and landscapes for more than 40 years. Kim Kraemer and her family are St. James parishioners and their son, Jake, is
in the fifth grade. It’s our pleasure to conduct this fundraiser with them—giving us the opportunity to support a local business and a parish family, while fundraising for our school.
We chose four of their hardiest varieties (red, white, burgundy and white/red) in 6 1/2-inch and 8 1/2-inch pots. They will be
ready for pick up (from St. James gymnasium) on December 1st from 11:00 to 6:00 p.m. The cost will be $13 for the 6 1/2-inch pots
and $26 for the 8 1/2-inch pots.
Please use the attached order form to keep track of your orders and return it with the money on Monday, October 31st.
You must collect the money when you take the order. Checks should be made payable to St. James School.

Dear St. James Families,
October 29/30
I want to keep you informed on our accreditation process as we continue our work over the next several months. During our work
day on October 13, the teachers and staff discussed, reflected on, and identified significant achievements and goals for three of the
eight accreditation factors, they are as follows:
Assessment of the School’s Catholic Identity: The school is Catholic, approved by the Local Ordinary, provides authentic
Catholic teaching, opportunities for community worship and participation in the sacraments, and promotes evangelization and service to the community.
Defining the School’s Purpose: The school’s purpose is defined through the school’s mission statement, philosophy,
measurable Schoolwide Learning Expectations, Archdiocesan curriculum standards, and other governing authority expectations.
Organization for Student Learning to Support High Achievement of all Students: The organizational structures of the school focus
on high achievement of all students, and communicate student progress to all shareholders.
One of the goals we set as we worked together was to communicate more effectively to our shareholders about our Schoolwide
Learning Expectations (SLEs) and to involve parents more in supporting and acknowledging these learning expectations when
their child exhibits them.
I would like to take this newsletter opportunity to remind you what the St. James SLEs are, in case you have missed them in the
past:)
The St. James Catholic School Graduate is…
A FAITHFUL CHRISTIAN
A RESPONSIBLE CITIZEN
A LIFE-LONG LEARNER
AN EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATOR
As the accreditation factor indicates, the SLEs must be measurable. The teachers developed a rubric for assessment several years
ago and are reviewing it to improve effectiveness. We will look at each SLE individually over the next several weeks.
A couple more tidbitsThank you for ordering Poinsettias, all orders are due Monday, October 31st
We are participating in a new service project to show support for our service men and women (and possibly prevent a few cavities;
please see the letter regarding our post-Halloween candy collection.
All Saints Day is November 1 and the school will be preparing for the 8:30 Mass, so there is no school Mass that Wednesday, November 2.
November 10th is our next accreditation work day, there is no school November 10 or 11th (Veteran’s
Day)
Thank you for your continued prayers and support!
-Shirley Gray
