Year of Mercy: Forgiveness is a decision not a feeling.
REFLECTION
30th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
"Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who
humbles himself will be exalted." The Pharisee and the tax collector--polar opposites by practice. The one is a religious leader,
a professional follower-of-the-law. The other is a deviant who
extorts money for himself as he goes about his economic business. But in today's parable, Jesus flips these perceptions around.
The humble tax collector is the one who "went home justified."
Whereas the Pharisee has a flawless outer appearance, when we
see a glimpse into his inner thoughts we detect his vanity and
presumption. We see a man who may keep the letter of the law,
but who is not truly converted to God's ways in his heart. The tax
collector, on the other hand, pleads for God's mercy, recognizing
that he needs it.
So, which one are we? Honestly, most of us are probably a
combination of these two character types. Most of us follow
God's laws some of the time, and fail to do so at other times. But
the important point is to honestly acknowledge when we do fail,
and to ask God to have mercy upon us. If we think we have nothing about which to plead for mercy, chances are we are living in
a kind of self-imposed blindness like the Pharisee. When we
won't admit we need help, it's hard to get the help we need! Instead, we should humble ourselves by honestly examining our
conscience (regularly!) and seeking God's forgiveness, particularly through reconciliation, the great sacrament of divine mercy.
As hard as it may be for some of us to confess our sins to a
priest, this humble act of acknowledging our failings prepares us
to be "justified" like the tax collector who cried out, "Be merciful
to me a sinner!"

DEACON CORNER: (BY DEACON AL)
On October 16 in St. Peter's Square Pope Francis canonized
seven new saints.
Argentine "gaucho priest," St. Jose Gabriel del Rosario Brochero was a
humble priest who traveled thousands of miles on a donkey to minister
to the poor and the sick.
St. Jose Sanchez del Rio, a 14-year-old Mexican boy, was martyred for
refusing to renounce his faith during the Cristero War of the 1920s.
St. Salomone Leclerq, who was killed after refusing to renounce his
faith at the height of the French Revolution.
St. Elizabeth of the Holy Trinity was a French Carmelite writer and
mystic.
St. Manuel Gonzalez Garcia, a Spanish bishop spent his life devoted to
Eucharistic adoration.
St. Ludovico Pavoni founded the Sons of Mary Immaculate, who dedicated his life to the vocational and spiritual education of the poor and
hearing impaired.
St. Alfonso Maria Fusco founded the Congregation of the Baptistine
Sisters of the Nazarene and of the Little House of Providence, a home
for abandoned children.

once a month during one of the weekend Liturgies. Parents should contact
the parish at least two months prior to the desired month of celebration

If you are an adult Catholic desiring the Sacrament of Confirmation,

Interested in the Catholic Faith?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults process offers the opportunity to
begin inquiry into the teachings and the practice of Catholicism. The
program offers varied paths for individuals who are unbaptized, those
baptized in another Christian faith tradition, or baptized Catholics who
have limited upbringing in the Church.
Questions are welcome, dialogue is encouraged, prayer and support are
integral, and very individual spiritual journeys are the norm.
Just curious? Just wondering? Really interested? A bit nervous? Married/
engaged to a Catholic and/or children in the faith and in need of information? Attending Mass (perhaps for years!) and feeling awkward in
stepping forward? Know a little and thinking it’s all a bit mysterious?

EveryWoman , a reading/study group, meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month starting promptly by 7pm. This Fall, we will be reading "Acts of the Apostles" (Part One) from the Church of the Holy Spirit

Tuesday, an exception as we missed last week), October 19, November 2,

EDGE &LIFETEEN
At our first EDGE/LIFETEEN session we discussed the working of the
Holy Spirit in our lives. Our teens learned that the Holy Spirit was sent to
all of us by Jesus through our Baptism and Confirmation. They also discussed the Fruits of the Holy Spirit and how they can help us be better
people and live in a way that reveals that we are children of God. This
semester we will be diving deeper into each Fruit of the Holy Spirit. Our
next session will be held on Monday, October 24th. TOPIC: Charity and
Generosity. Optional pizza dinner for $3.00 will take place from 6:00pm6:30pm.

The Shepherd Center of Chesterfield is a non profit interfaith organization
dedicated to helping seniors in the community remain independent in their
own homes. Those residents of Chesterfield 50 years of age or older can
receive transportation to medical appointments, for prescription pick up
and for grocery shopping. All transportation is arranged through the Shepherd Center and is provided by volunteers. If you need transportation or

Mondays with a counselor from Commonwealth Catholic Charities.

THE SASSY GROUP will be taking an excur sion to Old St. Peter ’s
Catholic Church in Richmond to see the new refurbishing of the inside.
We will then have a tour of the Governor’s Mansion (approximately 30
minutes). We have the option of going to lunch at the Capital, or the
Richmond Library. I’m told that the tastiest. Might be a lot of walking
involved. Parking in Richmond is at a premium. We’ll meet under the
awning at the Hopkins side of the Church at 12 noon. Please be prompt.
TRUNK OR TREAT COSTUME PARTY
Don’t forget to join us for fellowship at our Trunk or Treat Costume
Party this Friday, October 28th, from 6 - 8pm at the Outreach Center
Parking Lot. We will have entertainment, treats & candy, and we will
roast marshmallows by the fire. Hot dogs, hot chocolate, donuts & hot
apple cider will be sold by the St. Augustine of Hippo Café. There will
be a prize for the best decorated trunk. Please contact Wanda Alvarado
at the parish office if you wish to participate by reserving your parking
space, or if you would like to help with the event.
The Women’s Guild Christmas Bazaar will be held Saturday and
Sunday, November 5th & 6th from 8:30am until 1:30pm. Raffle
tickets for handmade quilts will be sold in the vestibule at the rear
and side entrances (or Hall) of Church beginning this Saturday,
October 22nd and Sunday, October 23rd. Please open your wallets
and help the ladies help the Church. Thank you.

PARISH FYI
Beulah Elementary School is collecting used shoes to fill 100 bags with
25 pairs. The shoes will be used to create micro businesses in under
developed countries like Haiti, Ghana and others. Our school will also
receive $1000 to fund school programs (such as buying audio equipment for ESL students for reading, subscriptions to reading programs,
etc.) You can help by donating any kind of used shoes and returning it
to our collection bin in the entry way by the deadline date of October

El Bazar de Navidad - patrozinado por “The Women’s Guild” se
llevará a cabo el sábado y el domingo, 5 y 6 de noviembre desde las
8:30 am hasta las 1:30pm. Boletos para la rifa de cobijas tejidos a
mano se venderán en el vestíbulo en las entradas traseras y laterales
(o sala) de la Iglesia a partir de este sábado, de octubre de 22 y domingo 23, Octubre. Por favor, vengan a este evento y ayuden a la

Un “cura gaucho” de Argentina, San José Gabriel Brochero era un humilde sacerdote que viajó miles de millas en un burro para servir a los
pobres y los enfermos.
San José Sánchez del Río, un niño mexicano de 14 años de edad, fue martirizado por negarse a renunciar a su fe durante la Guerra Cristera de la
década de 1920.
San Salomone Leclercq, que murió tras negarse a renunciar a su fe en el
apogeo de la Revolución Francesa.
Santa Isabel de la Trinidad fue un escritor carmelita francesa y mística.
San Manuel González García, un obispo español pasó su vida dedicado a la
adoración eucarística.
San Ludovico Pavoni fundó los Hijos de María Inmaculada, que dedicó su
vida a la educación profesional y espiritual de los pobres y a las personas
con problemas de audición.
San Alfonso María Fusco fundó la congregación de las Hermanas Baptistine del Nazareno y de la Pequeña Casa de la Providencia, un hogar para
niños abandonados.

La Escuela Primaria Beulah está colectando zapatos usados
para llenar 100 bolsas con 25 pares. Los zapatos se pueden utilizar para crear micro empresas en los países menos desarrollados como Haití, Ghana y otros. Nuestra escuela también recibirá $ 1000 para financiar programas escolares (como la compra de equipos de audio para los estudiantes de inglés como
segundo idioma para la lectura, las suscripciones a programas
de lectura, etc.) Usted puede ayudar donando cualquier tipo de
zapatos usados y devolviéndolos a nuestra bandeja de recogida
en la entrada de la escuela a mas tardar el 31 de octubre. Si

El “Shepherd Center of Chesterfield es una or ganización inter r eligioso sin lucro dedicada a ayudar a que las personas mayores en la
comunidad siguan siendo independientes en sus propios hogares . Los
residentes de Chesterfield de 50 años de edad o más podrán recibir el
transporte a las citas médicas , para recoger las recetas de y para hacer
las compras de comida. Todo el transporte está dispuesta a través del

Hot dogs, doughnuts (rosquillas), chocolate caliente, y cidra caliente
de manzana estará a la venta por medio de “St. Augustine of Hippo
Café. Habrá un premio para el baul major decorado. Necesitamos
baúles. Decore su baúl y diviértase repartiendo dulces. Favor de

ENCUENTRE LA ALEGRÍA DEL EVANGELIO
Año 3: Equipando la Parroquia
REFLEXIONES
30º DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO
En el Evangelio de hoy escuchamos a dos hombres, un publicano y un fariseo que fueron al templo para hacer oración a Dios.
El fariseo pensaba que Dios estaba muy orgulloso de él y de todo
lo que hacía. El publicano en cambio pensaba que él no era digno
de acercarse a Dios porque era pecador. Simplemente pedía misericordia. Sospecho que muchos de nosotros nos desconcertamos
al oír esta parábola. Porque quizá pensamos como el fariseo y
nos decimos a nosotros mismos: Yo me siento una persona muy
buena, asisto a Misa los domingos, cumplo los mandamientos,
doy mi colecta a mi parroquia, trato de convivir con mi vecino,
etcétera. Sin embargo, Jesús nos indica que eso no es lo correcto.
¿Dónde está lo incorrecto del fariseo? Él olvidó un importante
elemento de la vida espiritual: la humildad que nos lleva a la
justificación ante Dios. Dios es el misericordioso el que nos salva.
Reconocer que somos pecadores como el publicano y descubrir el inmenso amor de Dios hacia nosotros es lo que las lecturas de hoy tratan de enseñarnos. "La oración del humilde atraviesa las nubes, y mientras él no obtiene lo que pide, permanece
sin descanso y no desiste" (Eclo 35, 17). Es importante cumplir
con nuestros deberes espirituales y sociales, no es malo cumplir
los mandamientos y ser buenos, pero, hay que estar atentos al
mensaje de Jesús en el Evangelio de hoy. Estar atentos en enfocarnos en la bondad de Dios. Reconocer que todos somos pecadores y que todos tenemos necesidad de la misericordia de
Dios es una gracia. ¡Pidámonos esa gracia en esta Eucaristía!

su información con José Calderón. Las sesiones comienzan este domingo,
25 de septiembre.

Estos son los Requisitos:
1. Ser miembros inscritos de la parroquia (no menos de
6 meses) y que atiendan con r egular idad a la misa.
2. Debe haber recibido los Sacramentos de Bautismo y
Eucaristía.
3. Debe estar participando en el programa de Educación
Religiosa.
