LaHood overcomes past to defeat Reed

The battle between Nico LaHood
and longtime District Attorney Susan
Reed for the Bexar County District
Attorney position has come to a
conclusion.
Back in 2010, former prosecutor
and attorney Nico LaHood entered
the fray and lost to the established
Reed, who won 54 percent of the vote
to LaHood’s 46 in the prior election.
Second time was the charm, and
LaHood took the 2014 election 52
percent to Reed’s 48 percent. The
victory marks the end of a Republican
dominated office.
Despite being endorsed by the San
Antonio Police Officers Association
(SAPOA), Peter Holt of the San An­
tonio Spurs and San Antonio Express
News, it wasn’t enough for Reed to
keep her job.
The close call came unexpected New Bexar County District Attorney Nico LaHood receives a kiss from one of his staunch supporters at his campaign party.

nador.
Tras vencer a la demócrata
Wendy Davis en una de las con­
tiendas que más atención generó
en los votantes, el republicano
Greg Abbott fue elegido gober­
nador de Texas anoche.
Abbott contó con el apoyo del
59 por ciento de los electores
mientras que Davis obtuvo el
38 por ciento de los votos, en el
recuento oficial hasta la media­
noche del martes.

bott sucederá al actual gober­
nador republicano Rick Perry,
quien sostuvo el puesto desde

conservador al estilo de Texas es
lo que provee soluciones verda­
deras a problemas que los tejanos
se enfrentan”, expresó. “Mejores
escuelas, más oportunidades y
comunidades más seguras son
prioridades más grandes que
cual­q uier partido político”, re­
calcó.

Patrick’s victory keeps Texas red

Republican State Senator Dan Pat­
rick declared victory in the lieuten­
ant governor race on Tuesday night,
defeating his Democratic opponent,
State Senator Leticia Van de Putte.
The Houston-based Senator re­
ceived endorsements from conserva­
tive political organizations like the
Tea Party, giving him more than 59
percent of the vote.
“Today, voters across this great
state proved once again, that the
conservative ticket prevails in the
hearts of our fellow Texans. People
are looking for leaders that are bold
on the issues that are most important
to them,” Patrick said.
Despite Democrats’ efforts to
register and mobilize new voters
through grassroots campaigns like
Battleground Texas, the Republicans
swept the statewide elections on

dor de Texas en silla de ruedas.
Su esposa Cecilia, con quien está
casado desde 1981, se convertirá
en la primera dama de Texas de
origen hispano. Ambos tienen
una hija, Audrey, reportó The

Por su parte, la senadora esta­tal
Wendy Davis felicitó a su con­
trincante por su triunfo y animó
a sus fieles seguidores.
“Esta noche yo sé que ustedes
están decepcionados y estar de­
cepcionados está bien, pero estar
desanimados no, porque lo que
tenemos ante nosotros es la opor­
tunidad de reconstruir este estado
a su imagen y para probarle al
mundo lo que siempre hemos
sabido, que esto nunca fue sobre
Wendy Davis o Greg Abbott,
esto siempre ha sido y será para
siempre acerca de todos y cada
uno de ustedes”, comentó la se­
nadora estatal durante su discurso
de aceptación de de­rrota ante sus
seguidores en Fort Worth.
Davis añadió que aunque per­
dieron la gubernatura de Texas,
resultaron victoriosos.
“Ganamos cada día, porque
ustedes nunca se dieron por
vencidos”, expresó la senadora.

estatal demócrata Trey Martínez
Fischer le comentó a La Prensa
que los demócratas no se darán
por vencidos.
“Los demócratas en Texas no
han sido competitivos en 20 años.
Este año tuvimos a dos mujeres
quienes tuvieron las agallas de
poner sus nombres en la boleta
electoral, quienes recaudaron una
cantidad significativa de dinero,
construyeron organizaciones
tremendas, esta gente no se va a
retirar y regresarán a trabajar para
la próxima contienda”, Fischer
concluyó.

himself a “fiscal hawk”, was out­
raged by the tax payer funding of the
VIA street car that Wolff was all for.
Additionally, the fact that Wolff’s
campaign focused on providing tax
payer funding towards downtown
as opposed to the outskirts of Bexar
County that Soules thought was be­
ing neglected was a major issue.
Soules believed that Bexar County
needed a real transportation plan to
address challenges of growing into a
multi-count metro plan. He quit city
council and decided to run against
Wolff this year “to identify the lack
of leadership and accountability ex­
hibited through the words and actions
of Nelson Wolff.”
“We’ve taken this city to a new
level, on understanding our culture,
on understanding what arts means to
us and what they mean to economic
development,” Wolff said. “I wanted
this to be an election based on my
record, based on good ideas, based
on stepping into the future without
any timid step and for us to build a
great American city right here in San
Antonio, Texas.”

Joaquín Castro es reelecto como congresista

20 de Texas.
Con un resultado de 75.69% de
los votos ante los 24.31% de su con­
trincante Jeffrey C. Blunt, del partido
Libertarian, Castro fue reelegido para
su puesto.
Es de notar que la elección de ayer
fue la primera vez en que Joaquín
Castro, hermano gemelo de Julián
Castro (exalcalde de San Antonio
y ahora Secretario de Vivienda y
Desarrollo Urbano) compitió por
primera vez contra alguien para re­
tener su puesto. La primera vez que
fue elegido como congresista fue en
el 2013.
Como congresista Joaquín Castro
es parte del Comité de las Fuerzas
Armadas, el Sub Comité de las
Fuerzas del Aire y Tactical Air and
Land Forces, Comité de Asuntos Ex­
teriores, Sub Comité de Terrorismo,
entre otros.
Castro, nativo de San Antonio,
nació en 1974, es segunda gen­
eración de una familia mexicoamericana. Posee un doctorado en
leyes de la Escuela de Leyes de la
Universidad de Harvard. Está casado
y tiene una hija de un año.

LaHood said in his victory speech.
“It was time for a change,” a sup­
porter of LaHood said. “This just
goes to show that when we [Demo­
crats] rally together for a cause, we
can change things. I cannot wait to
see what LaHood does for our com­
munity.”
The new district attorney already
has plans to begin the child abuse
summit he had proposed.
“We gotta work. We gotta get ev­
eryone in the office and restructure.
We need to start working. I’m not
going to sit down and relax. There’s
a lot of work to do,” he said.
Despite his checkered past, La­
Hood overcame the challenge.
“I’m talking about the present,
and I’m not letting the past hold me
down. I’m comfortable in my skin.
I’m redeemed,” LaHood said. “I
believe in redemption, our justice
system believes in it, and I hope I can
inspire other people that make a poor
choice or go through a season in their
life; if they take responsibility…their
lives aren’t over.”

Another Bush enters Texas politics

The political dynasty that is the
Bush family continued its legacy as
the final results of Texas elections
were counted Tuesday night.
The latest Bush to enter politics
is George P. Bush. He easily be­
came the newly elected Texas Land
Commissioner and won the election
handedly against his opponent El
Paso Mayor John Cook.
“This is the future of our state. It’s
a conservative future, and it is here
now,” Bush told a crowd of sup­
porters at his election night watch
party in Austin.
Bush’s sentiments proved to be
correct as Texas turned bright red
quickly on Election Day. GOP
candidates Attorney General Greg
Abbott became the new governor
and State Senator Dan Patrick was
elected lieutenant governor. The
posts of Attorney General, Comp­
troller, Land Commissioner and
Agricultural Commissioner were
also won by republicans.
Bush’s race against Cook was
over early on Tuesday like many of
the other state elections, too.
After early voting and 8 percent
of the precincts reported results,
Bush was the decided winner, ac­
cording to Texas Tribune 2014 live
election results. The final tally had
Bush winning 61.3 percent of the
vote to Cook’s 34.8 percent.
“I’ve got a special message to
some of you who might not of have
voted on Election Day,” Bush said.
“Even though I didn’t win your vote,
in the next four years I want to win
your trust.”
Bush told supporters Tuesday
night that his philosophy as land
commissioner will be guided by
what led his campaign the past two
years.
“Let’s subscribe to a simply phi­
losophy that guided our campaign
from Day 1,” Bush said. “Let’s
work to build consensus, let’s seek
to join hands rather than point fin­
gers, and let’s look to build a better
tomorrow for our children and our
Texas red...

Putte addressed hundreds of cam­
paign supporters inside of San An­
tonio’s Sunset Station to recognize
the Republican victory.
“This race was an uphill battle.
This campaign and my service have
always been about securing the
future for the next generation, for
our children and our grandchildren.
Texas’ better days are in the future,
and that is because of people like
you,” Van de Putte said.
Patrick, a former Houston busi­
nessman, developed his conservative
ideologies on issues like abortion,
immigration and border security
through his popular radio talk show,
which he started in 2006. That same
year, Patrick was elected as a state
senator, and began serving his term
in the following year.
During their only debate, Van de
Putte and Patrick fought over Texas
laws concerning education, health­
care, and border security. Both sides
released attack ads that accused their
opponent of being out-of-touch with
Texas voters.
Despite the political tensions that
arose during the campaign, Van de

Spurs travel to Atlanta

After a 1-1 start, the San Anto­
nio Spurs are most likely thankful
for their recent five-day layoff.
Last Friday, the Spurs played
the much younger Phoenix Suns,
and the San Antonio roster looked
wobbly.
During the second half, the
Suns outpaced the Spurs sluggish
transitional defense, wearing
them down with fast breaks. Tim
Duncan and company had no
answer to coach Jeff Hornacek’s
implementation of the small ball,
and Phoenix guards Eric Bledsoe,
Isaiah Thomas and Goran Dragic
drained buckets with the enthu­
siasm of kids with a talent for
Pop-A-Shot.
The second-half stamina issues
may be a worry as the season
wears on, but for now, the Spurs
look to rectify the loss with a

con marcador de 117 a 107 su par­
tido de pretemporada contra el visi­
tante Hawks de Atlanta (dirigidos

respetos para Hornacek, trae buen
equipo que de seguro le estará
respondiendo positivamente por el
resto de la temporada. Spurs solo
ha perdido un partido, no es como,
para ponernos a pensar sobre que
se tiene que hacer para no volver
a caer en un partido sin mucha
acción. No llevamos prisa, poco
a poco iremos tomando nuestro
estilo de juego. Claro que tenemos
que seguir trabajando bastante duro

Spurs reciben a los Hawks este

PERMISO NO. WQ0014042001
SOLICITUD Y DECISIÓN PRELIMINAR. San Antonio River Authority, P.O. Box 839980, San Antonio, Texas 78283, ha solicitado a la Comisión de Calidad Ambiental del Estado
de Texas (TCEQ) una` renovación para autorizar el TPDES Permiso No. WQ0014042001, que autoriza la descarga de aguas residuales domesticas tratadas de un flujo medio
anual para no exceder 150,000 galones por dia. La TCEQ recibió esta solicitud el 5 de Mayo del 2014.
La planta está ubicada aproximadamente 0.35 milla al sur en Loop 1604 de la intersección de Interstate Highway 10 y Loop 1604, 600 pies al oeste de Loop 1604 en el Condado
de Bexar, Texas 78263. El efluente tratado es descargado al Escondido Creek; después a Martinez Creek; después a Lower Cibolo Creek en el Segmento No. 1902 de la Cuenca
del Río San Antonio. Los usos no clasificados de las aguas receptoras son no significativos usos de la vida acuática para Escondido Creek. Los usos designados para el Segmento
No. 1902 son elevados de vida acuática y recreación de contacto primario. Todas las determinaciones son preliminares y sujetas a revisión y/o revisiones.

un/a audiencia administrativa de lo contencioso”. Si presenta por parte de un grupo o asociación el pedido para una audiencia administrativa de lo contencioso,
debe identificar el nombre y la dirección de una persona que representa al grupo para recibir correspondencia en el futuro; debe identificar un miembro del grupo que
sería afectado adversamente por la planta o la actividad propuesta; debe proveer la información ya indicada anteriormente con respecto a la ubicación del miembro
afectado y la distancia de la planta o actividad propuesta; debe explicar como y porqué el miembro sería afectado y como los intereses que el grupo desea proteger
son pertinentes al propósito del grupo.
Después del cierre de los períodos para los pedidos y comentarios, el Director Ejecutivo enviará la solicitud y los pedidos para reconsideración o por una audiencia administrativa
de lo contenciosos a los Comisionados de la TCEQ para su consideración en una reunión programada de la Comisión.
La Comisión otorgará solamente una audiencia administrativa de lo contencioso sobre los hechos reales disputados del caso que son pertinentes y esenciales para la decisión de
la Comisión sobre la solicitud. Además, la Comisión sólo otorgará una audiencia administrativa de lo contencioso sobre los asuntos que fueron presentados antes del plazo de
vencimiento y que no fueron retirados posteriormente. Si ciertos criterios se cumplen, la TCEQ puede actuar sobre una solicitud para renovar un permiso para descargar
aguas residuales sin proveer una oportunidad de una audiencia administrativa de lo contencioso.
ACCIÓN DEL DIRECTOR EJECUTIVO. El Director Ejecutivo puede emitir una aprobación final de la solicitud a menos que exista un pedido antes del plazo de vencimiento de una
audiencia administrativa de lo contencioso o se ha presentado un pedido de reconsideración. Si un pedido ha llegado antes del plazo de vencimiento de la audiencia o el pedido
de reconsideración ha sido presentado, el Director Ejecutivo no emitirá una aprobación final sobre el permiso y enviará la solicitud y el pedido a los Comisionados de la TECQ para
consideración en una reunión programada de la Comisión.
LISTA DE CORREO. Si somete comentarios públicos, un pedido para una audiencia administrativa de lo contencioso o una reconsideración de la decisión del Director Ejecutivo,
la Oficina del Secretario Principal enviará por correo los avisos públicos en relación con la solicitud. Ademas, puede pedir que la TCEQ ponga su nombre en una or mas de las
listas correos siguientes (1) la lista de correo permanente para recibir los avisos de el solicitante indicado por nombre y número del permiso específico y/o (2) la lista de correo de
