Welcome to Sacred Heart Catholic Church
Our Site of Faith with Deacon Ed
October, in the Church, is Respect Life Month, which is why last week we
had a second collection for the Respect Life Ministries of the Diocese of San
Bernardino. It is a month in which we all need to take time to evaluate
our own response to life, to ask ourselves, to what extent do we the ‘In
the hand of God is the life of every living thing and the breath of all
mankind’ (Job 12:10)? Do we truly hold that every life, from the moment
of conception to natural death is sacred (CCC 2319)?
The late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin labeled this the
‘seamless garment’ which we must pick up and confront
anything which lessens the dignity of the human person.
The daily news cycle gives us ample opportunities to
practice our patience and our prudence as we hear of
mass murders on school campuses, bombings of
innocent civilians, abortions, capital punishment, war,
the signing of an assisted suicide bill in the state of
California to mention just a few. How should we as
‘good Christians’; as ‘good Catholics’ react to this in light of our ‘consistent
ethic of the dignity of life’ as espoused by our moral teachings? What
should our reactions be as we hear of what can only be termed ‘man’s
inhumanity to man’ or maybe crimes against humanity.
First and foremost, it is necessary to call upon the deepest realities of
our Baptisms when we were brought into the family of God and
incorporated into the body of Christ, and therefore made shares in life of
the Trinity: not just God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit; but
the reality that life is God, others, and me. We must live, as Pope Francis
reminded the Congress of the United States, by the Golden Rule; ‘Do unto
others as you would have them do unto you’ (Mt. 7:12). So we must
continue, at every opportunity to raise our individual and collective voices
in moral outrage against those forces that disrespect the sanctity and the
dignity of life. We each must, at whatever level we can; in conversation,
in Faithful Citizenship, in our homes and our neighborhoods; work for the
abolition of abortion, capital punishment, euthanasia, war, senseless violence
and murder.
But as importantly, again as Pope Francis reminded the Congress ‘if we
want life, let us give life’, we need to not only speak against those things
which degrade the dignity of human life, but advocate the things which
uplift the human spirit and enhance the dignity of life. We need to work
toward a future of freedom which requires, in Pope Francis’ words ‘love of
the common good and cooperation in a spirit of subsidiarity and solidarity’.
We must insure that nobody ever feels the need to an ‘end of life option’
because nobody ever feels that they are dying alone, we must make it our
duty, as our Bishops reminds us, to accompany those who are dying as
family, friends and community; to build a justice society in which nobody
will ever see abortion as an option; be in solidarity so that nobody feels
lost and alienated and unloved; for economic justice insuring that nobody
goes without the basic needs of life; for protection of the environment that
all can enjoy God’s creation.
Respecting life we respond with passion and compassion filling lives with
hope and healing, peace and justice, allowing us to see everyone as our
brother and sister; the inmate on death row, the immigrant (with or
without documents), the refugee, those who agree with us and those who
disagree with us; all as part of our family who need to be treated as we
ourselves wish to be treated. We need to act as Jesus, never validating
inappropriate behaviors, but always ready to love and embrace the
individual.
It is important to allow the fruits of our faith to allow us to enter into
dialogue, particularly across the forms of polarization which too often divide
us, and sow the seeds of peace. Let us take time this week to contemplate
the dream of a world of peace and justice to be built in our lives.
To again quote Pope Francis, pray for me.
Prayers and blessings,

una sociedad de justicia en el que nadie va a ver el aborto como una opción;
están de acuerdo con nosotros y los que no están de acuerdo con nosotros;
Oraciones y bendiciones,
Diacono Ed
