Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 2, 2016 2 LET GO AND LET GOD Many twelve-step programs use the phrase “Let go and let God.” In all their simplicity, these five words are the heart of today’s readings. For people who struggle with addictive behavior, these words plainly remind us that we can’t manage, control, or manipulate certain areas of our lives. How many times can we look back in our lives and find evidence of some plan at work other than our own? These are the moments when, for whatever reasons, we let someone greater than ourselves work the plan. We probably didn’t even recognize at the time that we were letting go of anything, but in retrospect, we see God’s hand and loving presence. It is our awareness of these moments that gives us the courage and initiative to let go again later on. It is this courage and initiative that are highlighted in today’s readings. We come to call it “faith.” Copyright © J. S. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Paluch Co. Question of the Week Question for Children: Jesus teaches us that our faith is is powerful and with it, we can do great things. We can forgive, love, and share with others. Which of these do you do most often? Question for Youth: The Gospel tells us even a little bit of faith is enough to make amazing things happen. How are you keeping your faith alive and growing? What good things happen in your life because of your faith? Question for Adults: Being “in Christ” means living as Christ teaches. What signs do you see in your life of generosity, forgiveness, hospitality, or any other of Jesus’ teachings? Next Saturday, Oct. 8, there will be a Respect specially scheduled Patriotic Rosary at 9 am in the chapel in place of our usual Thursday afternoon time. We are entering a very important time here in America. As stated by one of our founding fathers, Jedediah Morse, in 1799, "To the kindly influence of Christianity we owe that degree of civil freedom, and political and social happiness which mankind now enjoys." So as Catholic Christians, let us come together and pray that through our combined prayers America will continue to be blessed. A Year of Mercy Bishop Gerald Barnes is featured in a new video series produced by the Dept. of Communications that is designed to help our Catholic faithful reflect on the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy during this Jubilee Year. A link to the first installment of the series, in both English and Spanish, is below. Please feel free to use this for any prayerful or catechetical moments on mercy. Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 2, 2016 4 Stephen Ministry … Some of you may not be very acquainted with the Stephen Ministry yet, and may wonder why we often refer to a scripture passage, our Catholic Catechism, or some other spiritual book, poem, or song. Let me quote a passage from our 1st training manual to help you understand this better. “A Presentation for Training Ministers, Lesson 1, p. 8.” The quote is directed at our trainees. “The first and most important fact you need to know about this training and your ministry is that Stephen Ministry is a distinctively Christian ministry. From the outset, it is important to realize that the power from this ministry comes from Jesus. An important part of your training will be to learn to do everything you can to stay in touch with His Healing Power.” Throughout the training much emphasis is placed on God and our faith. Each training session includes pertinent spiritual passages, prayers, and a diagram called “The Caregiver’s Compass” which stresses the five most important characteristics of a Stephen Minister and aids in developing these traits in our trainees. The five most important characteristics are: Compassion, Full of Faith, Skilled, Trust Worthy, and Christ Centered. The emphasis on Jesus continues beyond the training and continues through our service in the ministry. All of us in the ministry are very aware that it is Jesus who is the leader, we are only the channels through which He works to bring His healing to our care receivers. 15th Annual Blue Mass October 6th 2016 The Fifteenth Annual Diocesan Blue Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, October 6, 2016, 6:00 p.m., at St. Mel Church, 4140 Corona Ave., Norco.
