Gas Prices four-year low in S.A.

With the arrival of the fall
season, anticipate the fall of fuel
prices.
The average price for gasoline
is approximately $2.90 per gallon: the lowest amount since Dec.
2010, according to gasbuddy.com.
All over the Alamo City, prices
are dropping even lower, the
lowest averaging about $2.70 per
gallon at various stations across
the city.
There are many factors that
are contributing to the low prices

explained.
One of the contributing factors
of the changes is the season. Fed-
eral government requires that oil
refineries create two types of fuel
during the year: summer blend
and winter blend gasoline. Summer blend is sold from May 1 until
Sept. 30, according to Laskoski.
“The ETA wants gas that
burns cleaner during the summer
months to decrease the amount of
pollution and smog in the environment,” Laskoski said. “Summer
blend gasoline is typically more
expensive to produce, which
contributes to the rise in prices.”
The prices of gasoline also rely
on crude oil production internationally, which Laskoski states is
being overproduced, thus causing
less demand for it.
“One of the key reasons for this
change is that, globally, crude oil
is being overproduced throughout
the world,” Laskoski said. “So,
there isn’t a consumer demand for
oil. There is a tremendous amount
of production.”
Domestic production has been
at its highest since 1982, and
the price for a barrel of crude oil
currently is approximately $82 a
barrel, according to Laskoski.
Laskoski also pointed out that
trends show that gas prices will
remain low until January, unless
OPEC, the Arab intergovernmental organization that coordinates
the petroleum policies of its 12
member countries, agrees on
production cuts and stability of
prices.
“There is no definite way of
knowing what is going to happen.
It’s always a poker game with
OPEC,” Laskoski said. “There is

Ebola team to train in S.A.

Despite the popular U.S. thought
which equates the Ebola virus with
death, only one of the five Ebola
patients have died from the virus.
Thomas Duncan, the first Ebola
patient in the United States, passed
away at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas last week.
On Saturday, President Obama
cautioned Americans against mass
hysteria, stating “If we’re guided by
science — the facts, not fear, then
I am absolutely confident we can
prevent a serious outbreak here in the
United States.”
Although an Ebola diagnosis in
countries like West Africa often leads
to death, U.S. patients have an 80
percent survival rate, and have access
to specialized infectious disease treatments that are not available in most
other countries.
The CDC has continued to enforce
stricter health and safety guidelines
for hospital staff and medical professionals throughout the country, and
major airports have begun screening
passengers before they leave for
countries that have a high number of
Ebola cases.
According to officials, the virus is
not easily spread in the U.S., and is
only transmitted through contact with
an infected individual’s bodily fluids,
blood or objects like needles.
In recent weeks, the Ebola virus
has spread more panic than disease
among the American public, yet a
new Ebola rapid-response team was
formed.
On Sunday, the Department of
Defense issued an order to create a
30-person response team to assist
hospitals in the case of an Ebola
outbreak. Once assembled, the team
will receive medical and specialized
equipment training at Ft. Sam Houston, in San Antonio.
“All this started in response to a
request by the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services — to
provide short notice assistance to
hospitals with Ebola patients, and the
Pentagon approved the team,” Preston Schlachter, a U.S. Northern Command spokesman said on Monday.
U.S. Northern Command is currently establishing the team which
will include five doctors, five medical trainers, and 20 critical-care
nurses who specialize in containing
and treating infectious diseases like
Ebola.
The team will report to Ft. Sam
Houston for a week of personal protective equipment (PPE) and disease

Proyecto para prevenir inundaciones será finalizado este año

Siempre que llueve, el señor
Tony Sánchez, residente del área
Woodlawn Lake, teme por su seguridad.
En 1998 una tormenta inundó su
casa, arrasó con su carro y todas
las pertenencias que guardaba en
su garaje.
El siguiente incidente ocurrió
en el 2002, cuando San Antonio
registró ocho pulgadas de lluvia
en tres horas y 230 casas en el área
de Woodlawn Lake terminaron
inundadas, una de ellas, de nuevo,
la de Sánchez.
Y además de las inundaciones,
una persona de la ciudad se ahogó.
Tras esta catástrofe, el Condado
de Bexar desarrolló un sistema
de acequia conocido como Laddie
Ditch.
Cuando llueve, el agua es desviada por canales y desemboca en
estanques artificiales creados para
la detención del agua.
Actualmente, el Condado de
Bexar le está poniendo los últimos
toques al parque que albergarán los
estanques artificiales.
Según la directora de obras públicas del Condado de Bexar, Renee
Green, uno de los estanques tendrá
la capacidad de sostener 175 acrepies de agua y el otro sostendrá 75
acre-pies.
Un acre-pie de agua es lo equivalente a un acre de terreno con 12
pulgadas de agua sobre el terreno.
“Los estanques están diseñados
para detener el agua y para evitar
que corra a las calles e inunda casas”, explicó la directora. “El agua
se quedará aquí y se vaciará al lago
Woodlawn poco a poco”.

póliza de seguro de casa. Añadió
que, típicamente, los residentes que
no están en una parte de terreno
inun­dable pagan $1,500 al año.
Se espera que el proyecto también
reduzca inundaciones en la calle
Fredericksburg y por el Boulevard
Kampmann para que vehículos pue­
dan manejar en la lluvia con más
seguridad.
Aparte del alivio de preocupaciones que el parque ofrecerá,
también servirá como un parque
recreacional.
“Diseñamos el parque con la idea
de que tuviera campos de fútbol”,
explicó Green. “A la orilla de los
estanques también habrá un camino
para que la gente pueda caminar”.
Dos organizaciones de fútbol sin
fines de lucro mantendrán los cam-
pos bien cuidados y los harán accesibles a miembros de otros clubs.
Así mismo, la Ciudad de San
Antonio se ha comprometido a darle
mantenimiento al parque.
Lo único que falta para la apertura del parque en diciembre es el
pavimento del estacionamiento, la
construcción de la banqueta, colocar
el césped y plantar árboles nuevos.

sufragio en favor de candidatos de
uno u otro partido y romper con
la indiferencia y apatía que se ha
visto en votaciones recientes.
Localmente los votantes observan el desarrollo de varias

campañas que llaman la atención,
entre las cuales sobresale la pugna
por el puesto de District Attorney
que sostienen Susan Reed y el
aspirante al puesto Nicholas Lahood, quien en su plataforma de
campaña ha insistido en que en los
últimos años se han multiplicado
los casos de abuso de los niños,
los cuales –en no pocas ocasiones–
han dado como resultado la muerte
de niños pequeños.
Otra votación cercana a San
Antonio es la de la senadora
demócrata Leticia Van de Putte,
quien contiende por la posición de
Liutenant Governor por el estado
de Texas, puesto que actualmente
ocupa David Dewhurst desde el
año 2003.
Por el lado republicano el
contendiente es el senador estatal
Dan Patrick.

Braken Cave y sus murciélagos a salvo de urbanización

No habrá construcciones en
torno a la cueva Braken Cave,
ubicada al norte de la ciudad de
San Antonio, la cual ha sido por
10 millones de años el hábitat del
pequeño murciélago mexicano
(Mexican Free-tailed bat), cuya
presencia es de vital importancia
para la agricultura ya que este
mamífero volador elimina las
plagas de parásitos y también
ayuda al equilibrio ecológico de
la región.
La ciudad de San Antonio y
Bat Conservation International,
apoyados por el Condado y otros
entidades, compraron a Gallo
Properties (por 20 millones de
dólares), una extensión de campo
silvestre de 1521 acres en Texas
Hill Country, terreno donde se
encuentra la reserva ecológica
Braken Cave Preserve y la cueva
que lleva este nombre.
El anuncio de esta transacción
se hizo el jueves en las oficinas
municipales en una conferencia
presidida por el Concejal del Distrito No.8 Ron Nirenberg.
En las cláusulas del contrato con
la empresa Gallo se cancela definitivamente el proyecto de construir
3.500 residencias particulares en
una zona boscosa conocida como
Cresent Hill. Y, por consecuencia,
Braken Cave y los murciélagos
quedan protegidos.
Braken Cave se encuentra bajo
el cuidado de Bat Conservation
International y asistencia del organismo The Nature Conservancy.
Para la adquisición de la propie-
dad de referencia, el Concilio
Municipal asignó 10 millones de
dólares. The Nature Conservancy
y Bat Conservation International
colectaron 5 millones de dólares
en donaciones cedidas por Tuim y
Karen Hixon, Kronkosky Charitable Foundation y la familia Mays.

Double-feature at Cameo: ‘Sweeny Todd’ and ‘Rocky Horror Show’

What do you get when you mix
a vengeful Barber from Victorian
London, with an alien doctor in a
secluded castle (with no phones)
determined to create the perfect human specimen?
You get a night of great entertainment at the Cameo Theater.
Pennington Studios has brought
together both “Sweeny Todd: The
Demon Barber of Fleet Street” and
“The Rocky Horror Show” under
one roof on the same night. The
combination of these two shows is
a perfect fit for October and the lead
up to Halloween.
“Sweeny Todd” follows an exiled
barber who returns to London to get
revenge against a crooked judge
who framed him, and who did horrible things to Sweeny’s wife. When
Sweeny arrives in London, he befriends a failing meat pie shop owner,
Mrs. Lovett. Both Mrs. Lovett and
Todd find a way to get vengeance,
get rid of bodies and find more meat
for the pies.
This production of Sweeny does
an innovative job with the set, interchangeable double sided sets are
rolled around and connected like
Lego pieces to create each scene. The
set is complete with trap door in the
floor that takes bodies from Sweeny’s
barber chair to the basement where
they are baked into pies.
The entire cast is great and on
point with their cues and range. Sean
Transylvanian’s and Frank ‘N’ Furter (Jonathan Pennington),
have their own ideas about how to greet a guest in “Rocky Horror

Salazar, who takes on the role of the
melancholy and vengeful Sweeny
Todd, plays the role with the perfect
amount of justified brutality and
sadness.
The truly amazing Twyla Lamont,
who I last saw in a production of
“Cats” and managed to not leave a
dry eye in the house with her rendition of Memory, is back in her role
as the eccentric Mrs. Lovett. Her
performance is extraordinary and
hilarious; she has a way of keeping
things very natural and to make difficult roles look easy.
Andrea Varnado pours her operatic heart into her role as Johanna
and brings the production full circle.
This production of Sweeny Todd
has been one of my favorite local performances this year from set to cast.
After Sweeny, “Rocky Horror
Show” is readied to go for the late
night double-feature.
“Rocky Horror Show” follows the
story of the young and corruptible
Brad (Austin Allie) and Janet (Erin
Erxleben) who find themselves looking for a phone in a castle, following
a late night flat tire. They are pulled
into a crazy night of provocative fun,

Los beisbolistas latinos serán
protagonistas en el “Clásico de Otoño”
EFE - La hora del “Clásico
de Otoño” de las Grandes Ligas
llegó con los Gigantes de San
Francisco y los Reales de Kansas
City como equipos que tendrán
que definir al nuevo campeón
y una vez más los 14 peloteros
latinoamericanos que van a participar tendrán un protagonismo
especial.
Si los Gigantes, campeones de
la Liga Nacional, y los Reales,
de la Americana, pasaron de ser
los equipos comodines a luchar
por el título de la Serie Mundial
fue en parte gracias a la aporta­
ción ofensiva y defensiva que
hicieron los peloteros latinos
que tienen en sus respectivas
plantillas.
Ambos equipos poseen jugadores que en cualquier momento
pueden inclinar un partido a su
favor, y entre ellos están incluidos los toletes y la serpentina
latinoamericana.
Los Gigantes, que de acuerdo a
las estadísticas poseen una ligera
ventaja en el “Clásico de Otoño”,
que se juga al mejor de siete a
partir del martes en el campo de
los Reales, el “Kauffman Stadium”, cuentan en sus líneas con
ocho jugadores latinoamericanos
capacitados para convertirse en
pieza clave.
Uno de ellos es el antesalista
venezolano Pablo Sandoval, el
mejor colocado en promedio de
bateo de entre los latinoamericanos que protagonizarán la Serie
Mundial.
Sandoval, de 28 años, es séptimo en ese apartado, con promedio de .326, y que se ha convertido en líder de la ofensiva de
los Gigantes.
El toletero de Puerto Cabello
cuenta con la experiencia de
haber sido jugador clave para
los Gigantes en las dos Series
Mundiales anteriores que disputaron también le ha permitido
establecer marca de equipo al
embasarse en 22 partidos seguidos de la fase final y superar a
Barry Bonds.
La racha que ha conseguido
Sandoval data del cuarto juego
por el título divisional en la
Liga Nacional, el 12 de octubre
del 2012 y puede ampliarla en la
Serie Mundial.
“Panda Express”, como cariñosamente se le conoce a Sandoval, superó nada menos que
al hombre de las marcas con los
Gigantes, Bonds que la había
establecido desde la fase final
del 2002 a la del 2003.
Los Gigantes también cuenta con la aportación ofensiva
del guardabosques venezolano
Gregor Blanco, que ha convertido sus botines en una máquina
de hacer carreras, al sumar cuatro
en lo que va de temporada.
Blanco además ha remolcado
tres anotaciones, que lo hacen un
bate peligroso en el ataque.

Lo mismo que hace su compatriota Juan Pérez que como
bateador emergente ha hecho una
gran labor y ha pisado dos veces
la registradora.
Desde el montículo, el bullpen de los Gigantes cuenta con
cuatros relevistas que han sido
decisivos a la hora de asegurar
el trabajo de los abridores.
El manejador de los Gigantes,
Bruce Bochy, tiene toda la confianza en el dominicano Santiago
Casilla, el venezolano Yusmeiro
Petit, el boricua Javier López y el
mexicano Sergio Romo, que en
sus salidas como relevistas han
sido claves a la hora de estar el
equipo en su tercera Serie Mundial en cinco temporadas.
Por los Reales el paracorto en
corto venezolano Alcides Escobar se ha convertido en uno de
los mejores bates de la novena
de Kansas City en la fase final
que les ha permitido disputar
su primera Serie Mundial desde
1985.
Escobar, tiene promedio de
.278 con el bate, luego de haber
pegado 10 imparables en fase
final, que lo colocan en tercer
lugar en ese apartado.
El venezolano además suma
cinco veces que ha pisado la
registradora y ha producido tres
anotaciones.
Su compatriota el receptor
Salvador Pérez también puede
definir con su bate, y ha remolcados dos carreras, incluida la que

Ventura, un derecho de 23 años,

Ventura ha trabajado 13 episodios en los que ha aceptado
12 imparables, siete carreras,
ha dado cuatro bases por bolas
y retirado a ocho por la vía del
ponche.
Su compatriota Kelvin Herrera
es toda una garantía como relevista que sirve la mesa al cerrador
y en las siete salidas que ha hecho
en lo que va de la fase final ha trabajado ocho entradas y un tercio
con seis imparables permitidos y
solo una carrera limpia.
Mientras que el abridor de
origen hispano Jason Vargas,
que saldrá en el tercer partido de
la Serie Mundial tiene marca de
2-0 en lo que va de la fase final y
confirmó que su fichaje el pasado
invierno fue todo un acierto.

Roadrunners struggle in second half meltdown to La. Tech

After a promising first-half lead,
the Roadrunners struggled through
a disastrous third quarter, falling to
Louisiana Tech 27-20.
Former third-string quarterback
Austin Robinson endured brutal
hits, but displayed heart and determination in his first start for UTSA.
Prior to the game, Robinson started with an 82.4 percent completion
percentage, higher than the season’s
starter Tucker Carter, 57.1 percent
and No. 2 quarterback Blake Bogenschutz, 56.4 percent.
In the first quarter, UTSA didn’t
see much movement down the field
besides a first series, 20-yard wobbly completion.
Robinson, the dual-threat quarterback, was limited in rushing,
and settled for conservative short
passes.
The majority of the redshirt freshman’s throws weren’t the prettiest,
but they were accurate passes that
found the intended target.
In contrast, Louisiana Tech
settled on deep lobs and low percentage passes, hurling bombs
down the field that often wobbled
over the receivers head.
UTSA gave up one first quarter
interception, an overthrown pass
that deflected off the receivers
shoulder pad and into the hands of
the opposition.
UTSA’s reliable defense made up
for the turnover, dropping Louisiana Tech three yards from the line
of scrimmage on third and goal.
Louisiana Tech was forced into
a field goal situation, and kicked a
21-yard field goal to tie the game.
The first quarter was the tale of
two defenses, which held the score
to 3-3.
Robinson was the difference
maker in the second quarter, when
he accelerated to a 53-yard touchdown run assisted by key screens by
the Roadrunner’s offense.
The second quarter was overshadowed by numerous thrown
flags and various scuffles as the
competition turned heated. As the
game grew uglier, referees struggled to restore some semblance
of order as the penalties escalated.
UTSA had one,15-yard penalty,
and Louisana Tech had five for 45
yards at the half.
The UTSA defense was the
strong point of the first half. The
frontline made necessary stops, and
the blitz surged off the edges for
vital stops, relentlessly pounding
the Louisiana Tech offense.
Roadrunners’ head coach Larry
Coker was pleased with his team’s
first half performance, applauding
Robertson’s efforts.
“He’s done some good things,”
Coker said. “He made some mistakes, some rookie mistakes. But,
again, you can see what he can do
with his legs. This has been a huge
run for us.”
Despite an impressive first half,
Robinson entered the second looking like a rookie quarterback overwhelmed with the game.
Roadrunners free safety Triston
Wade was responsible for a firstseries interception in the second
half, after constant pressure on
Louisiana Tech’s offense.
However, UTSA’s offense was
gobbled up by Louisiana Tech
throughout the third quarter.
Louisiana Tech returned playing more poised and accelerated
football.
On the following possession, a
bad snap sailed over Robinson’s
head and bounced into the end zone,
resulting in a touchdown when
Louisiana Tech linebacker Terrell
Pinson nabbed the turnover, giving
the Bulldogs their first lead, 13-10.
Pinson followed up his touchdown by intercepting a lobbed
ball in the middle of the field.
The turnover resulted in a 19-yard
touchdown pass from Louisiana
Tech quarterback Cody Sokol to
wide-receiver Sterling Griffin as
Louisiana Tech lead 20-10.
In a questionable move by the
Roadrunners, UTSA inserted ailing
starter Tucker Carter to replace the
struggling Robinson. On his first
drive, Carter sailed the ball straight
into the hands linebacker Terrell
Pinson.
It was Pinson’s second interception of the half, and his third takeaway of the game.
The Bulldogs took advantage of
UTSA’s faux pas and capitalized
on a quick rush by running back
Kenneth Dixon to put Louisiana
Tech up 27-10.
Robinson was punished by crippling blitzes and was slow to rise
after two sacks.
A third-and-30 rush from UTSA
running back Jarveon Williams kept
the Roadrunners competitive, and
deflated some of the momentum
developed by Louisiana Tech defense at the end of the third quarter.

Spurs sigue probando talento

La afición fue quien resultó
ganadora durante el partido de
pretemporada entre el pentacampeón Spurs de San Antonio contra
su rival de las dos pasadas finales
de la NBA, el Heat de Miami, que
se agencio la victoria con marcador de 111 a 108 en tiempo extra.
Así el público contempló al mejor equipo del baloncesto universal con sede en nuestra deportiva
región de El Álamo.
El AT&T Center no pudo lucir
lleno ante la visita del excampeón, ya que no tuvieron acción
el guardia estelar Tony Parker,
Tiago Splitter y Kawhi Leonard.
Y por el Heat, no tuvieron acción
el alero Chris Bosh y el guardia
titular Dwyane Wade, quienes
desde la banca se divirtieron y
estuvieron apoyando a sus compañeros de nuevo ingreso.
Desde el primer silbatazo, el
Heat, que se apoderó del balón,
inició una temprana delantera,
la cual cejaron hasta los últimos
segundos del cerrado encuentro
en los que el marcador finalizó
empatado. Así se fueron a cinco
minutos de tiempo extra, lapso
en el que predominó la astucia
del entrenador en jefe visitante
Erik Spoelstra, quien le ganó en la
estrategia al timonel local Gregg
Popovich, a pesar de haberse
centrado en darle oportunidad de
juego a suplentes para ver cómo
respondían.
En verdad que el nuevo talento
no lo dejó abajo y pudo verlos
realizar sus habilidades con el
manejo del balón, comandados
por el capitán Tim Duncan y el
sexto hombre, el guardia argentino Manu Ginóbili.
Spurs abrió con la quinteta
formada por el alero menor Matt
Bonner, Duncan, el guardia canadiense Cory Joseph, quien
sustituyó al guardia francés Tony
Parker, el escolta neoyorquino
Danny Green, y el novato de
UCLA, Kyle Anderson.
Por la quinteta rival estuvieron
Udonis Haslem, delantero, los
guardias Mario Chalmers y Norris
Cole, y los aleros menores Danny
Granger y Shawne Williams.
Por los Spurs, el novato Anderson abrió el primer cuarto ano­
tando diez unidades, finalizando
con un total de 17 puntos durante
32 minutos de acción, en los que
anotó 2 de 3 triples. Le siguió el
guardia italiano Marco Belinelli,
quien en 29 minutos de acción
encestó 29 puntos con 3 triples en
7 intentos, el capitán y delantero
Tim Duncan anotó 11 unidades.
Bonner finalizó con 5 unidades,
anotando un triple.
Danny Green anotó 2 de 4
triples con ocho unidades.
Joseph, quien jugó 36 minutos,
respondió encestando 14 puntos

El alero californiano Austin
Daye, en 19 minutos, marcó 10

Aron Bynes en 17 minutos ano­
tó 4, el alero novato de Alabama
JaMychal Green se discutió encestando 11 puntos en 13 minutos.
Por el Heat, Shabazz Napier,
guardia novato de Connecticut,
mostró que desea ganarse el escaño titular, pues en 32 minutos
de juego fabricó 25 puntos, con
lo que dejó asentado su estilo
ofensivo y defensivo.
Por los también novatos: Tyler
Johnson (guardia) anotó 17 puntos, seguido por el guardia Andre
Dawkins, egresado de Duke University, que se fue con 16 puntos.
El experimentado escolta Mario
Chalmers en 21 minutos de acción
colaboró anotando 11 puntos.
Cabe anotar que el novato
Napier fue el que más se destacó
sobre la duela, recibiendo felicitaciones del entrenador Spoelstra,
quien dijo sentirse contento con
el trabajo de todos los jugadores
que han tenido oportunidades de
enseñar su estilo de juego.
“Solo deseamos ver buenos
resultados entre novatos y prospectos. Todavía no es tiempo de
