Saint Vincent de Paul Was kidnapped once?
que San Vicente de Paul fue secuestrado?
In 1605, Vincent sailed from Marseilles on his way
back from Castres where he had gone to sell some
property he had received in an inheritance from a
wealthy patron in Toulouse, and was taken captive
by Barbary pirates, who brought him to Tunis. De
Paul was auctioned off as a slave to the highest
bidder, and spent two years in bondage.

What’s a Catholic to Do?
As we enter the final weeks of what many have called
the most negative presidential election of our life time many
may be asking what is a good Catholic supposed to do and think
while being subjected to a seemingly daily barrage of comments
which seem to call forth the most zealous reactions. At times it
seems that the best thing to do is to simply hide until it is all
over. Yet our bishops have told us that we have a moral
obligation, through a well formed
conscience, to participate in our electoral
process to the extent that we can. Even
the voice of Amos, echoing across the
centuries, calls us to actions, ‘Thus says the
Lord the God of hosts, Woe to the
complacent in Zion.’ (Amos 5:1)
Some direction may be found in
the Gospels of the last few weeks as we
saw that the cost of discipleship was to
take up or cross, embrace and love God
more than anyone or anything, experience
God’s prodigal love and mercy which
causes God to go out, seek, find and
embrace all, to offer that same love we are
to offer to those most marginalized; and in
following Jesus to be in the world not of the world. In fact the
advice given to Timothy holds true for us as well ‘you, [person]
of God, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and
gentleness.’ (1Tim 6:11)
As faithful Catholics we must pledge to become
involved in the electoral process, registering and voting if we are
eligible, but even if we cannot vote we must enter into the
political dialogue. This means we must form our consciences so
that we can use our human reason, enlightened by the teaching
of Christ and his Church. We need to become informed about
the value of human life and how this relates not only to our
opposition to abortion, euthanasia, capital punishment and
unjust war, but also how it impacts our understanding of
immigration, health care, poverty, violence, education, racism,
safe working conditions, the environment, living wages, as well
as so many other things that impact the respect and dignity of
the human person. It is necessary to recognize that we have a
rich history of Catholic social teachings reminding us that we are
to do good and avoid evil; work for the common good; foster
and respect the rights of the most vulnerable; a call to solidarity
which transcends national, racial, ethnic, economic, and
ideological differences.
Informed by Catholic social teachings we must
prudently look at the policies offered by individuals (not just
their words and slogans which may target an emotional
response, but rather the actual policy agendas which they
propose) or the effects of proposed legislation in light of this
social teaching. Thus having formed our conscience we are
ready to enter into the dialogue, with judgment and reason,
recognizing the moral quality of our actions, and faithfully
following what we know to be just and right. (CCC 1778)
Thus, with calm and assurance we can dialogue with
others, recognizing the dignity of the other person, and
confidently express our position. While we may justifiably,
oppose their positions and we may legitimately question their
rational our moral response requires that we always respect the
dignity of the other person in our words and actions. Suggesting
that someone’s positions are wrong can never be done in such a
way as to question the worth of the individual. A well-formed
conscience will allow us to disagree without being disagreeable.
By developing a well-formed conscience we can journey
through the final hectic days of this political season with civility
and respect, becoming fully engaged, to the greatest extent we
can, in the political process. Becoming well informed about the
policy positions of individual candidates; weighing how all of
their policy statements align with Catholic social teachings; the
bishops remind us that we cannot be single issue voters; and
since it is unlikely that anyone candidate will fully align on all
issues making a prudent, informed choice between candidates.
What’s a Catholic to do? Investigate, listen, civilly
dialogue, explore and make prudent, well informed choices.
The Church offers information and maybe positions on
propositions; check out the Diocesan website (sbdiocese.org)
Under Faithful Citizenship; but not candidates. Most of all, if
you can register and Vote, it is the only way that your Catholic
voice may be heard.

recuerdan que no podemos basar nuestro voto en una sola cuestión;
(sbdiocese.org) Faithful Citizenship; (Ciudadanos Fieles). Sobretodo,
Bendiciones ,
