Bullying Prevention
Begins with You!
Incidents in schools and
communities have highlighted
bullying like never before.
Bullying occurs when a child
is targeted with repetitive
aggressive and unwanted
negative verbal, physical,
or social behavior that
involves an imbalance of
power. Bullying happens
during or after school hours
in places like the classroom,
the playground, the school
bus, the Internet, and the
community. With the Center
for Disease Control and
Prevention indicating that
20% of high school students
experience bullying and the
prevalence permeating in
elementary and middle school,
we need to be the generation
that becomes involved in the
solution. What can we do to
prevent bullying?
Keeping communication
open and talking about
bullying while teaching
children strategies to stand
up for themselves and others
safely is an important step in
prevention. Being involved in
your child’s activities, asking
questions, monitoring Internet
use, and participating in their
school and community life is
imperative, as it will facilitate
healthy interaction and
communication. Children and
adolescents who engage in
bullying behavior are having
problems as well. Teaching
compassion toward those who
bully and opting for treating
them with kindness and
respect while firmly standing
against their negative
behavior will facilitate
change and promote healing.
Everyone in the school is
involved in the bullying cycle
and it is important for parents
and educators to understand
that expectators must become
active in prevention strategies.
At home, parents should
model respectful and kind
behavior, as children learn
from observation. Teaching
them to find the positive
side of every situation in life
and avoiding the projection
of frustrations on others is
important, helping children
learn tolerance and other skills
to help them overcome life
challenges.
about reporting negative
behavior, ensuring that the
individual reporting is fully
supported. Teachers and
parents should understand
that bullying behavior is not
just a stage that all children
go through and that they
will not just grow out of this
stage without direct strategic
support. Speaking up against
bullying should be praised.
Parents should teach their
children compassion as not
doing anything to help others
contributes to the bullying
cycle. At school, educators
need to build a supportive
school climate so students feel
safe everywhere on school
campus, sending a message
that bullying is not acceptable
behavior. It is difficult for
children and adolescents to
handle bullying behavior on
their own. Educators need
to have an open door policy
Parents, educators, and
students need to take
an active role in bullying
prevention so we can improve
our school community. We
can work together so children
and adolescents learn not to
be fearful, teaching them deep
understanding that God is
bigger than any circumstance.
He will guide us in our efforts
as he is present in everything
we do. “Do not fear, I will help
you.” (Isaiah 41:13).

strategies to empower children to
engage effectively with parents,
teachers, and those involved in
bullying. Parents will learn to model
positive behavior at home and
teachers will learn an effective youthcentered approach to reduce bullying
and improve school climate.

OCTOBER 26

¡La Prevención del Acoso Escolar
(Bullying) Comienza por Usted!
Incidentes en escuelas y
comunidades han realzado
la intimidación o acoso
escolar (bullying en inglés)
como nunca antes. El acoso
escolar ocurre cuando un
niño está siendo molestado
con agresión verbal, física o
de comportamiento social
no deseado, que implica un
desequilibrio de poder. La
intimidación ocurre durante
o después de las horas
escolares en lugares como el
aula, el patio de recreo, en el
autobús escolar, el Internet, y
la comunidad. Debido a que
el Centro para el Control y
Prevención de Enfermedades
de EEUU indica que el 20% de
los estudiantes de la escuela
secundaria experimentan la
intimidación y la prevalencia
se extiende a la escuela
primaria e intermedia,
tenemos que ser la generación
que se involucra en la solución
de este problema.
¿Qué podemos hacer para
prevenir la intimidación o
acoso escolar?
Es importante mantener una
comunicación abierta y hablar
acerca de la intimidación
mientras que le enseñamos
a los niños estrategias para
defenderse a sí mismos y
a los demás compañeros
de una manera segura. Es
imperativo involucrarse
en las actividades de su
hijo(a) haciendo preguntas,
monitoreando el uso de
Internet y participando en su
vida escolar y comunitaria
para facilitar la comunicación
sana. Los niños y adolescentes
que acosan a otros también
están teniendo problemas. Es
necesario enseñar compasión
hacia aquellos que intimidan,
optando por tratarlos con
amabilidad y respeto pero
siendo firmes contra el
comportamiento negativo, ya
que esto facilitará el cambio.
Todos en la escuela están
involucrados en el ciclo de la
intimidación y es importante
que los padres y educadores
comprendan que los
expectadores también deben
participar activamente en las
estrategias de prevención.
En casa, los padres deben
modelar un comportamiento
respetuoso y amable ya
que los niños aprenden
observando. Enseñarles a
encontrar el lado positivo
y evitar la proyección de
frustraciones en otros es
importante para ayudar
a los niños a aprender la
tolerancia y otras habilidades
que les ayude a superar los
desafíos de la vida. Los padres
deben enseñar a sus hijos
compasión por otros ya que
no hacer nada para ayudar
a los demás contribuye al
ciclo de la intimidación. En
la escuela, los educadores
necesitan crear un clima
escolar favorable para que los
estudiantes se sienten seguros
por todas las instalaciones
escolares, dando un mensaje
claro que la intimidación
no es un comportamiento
aceptable. Es difícil para
los niños y adolescentes
manejar el comportamiento
de intimidación por su propia
cuenta. Los educadores
necesitan tener una
política de puertas abiertas

sobre la notificación de
comportamiento negativo,
garantizando que apoyarán
completamente a quien
reporte un problema. Los
maestros y los padres
deben entender que
el comportamiento de
intimidación no es sólo una
etapa que todos los niños
pasan y que no van a salir
del problema sin apoyo
estratégico directo. El reportar
actos de intimidación debe ser
alabado y no prevenido.
Los padres, los educadores
y los estudiantes necesitan
tomar un papel activo en la
prevención de la intimidación
para que podamos mejorar
nuestra comunidad escolar.
Podemos trabajar juntos para
que los niños y adolescentes
aprendan a no tener
miedo, enseñándoles un
entendimiento profundo de
que Dios es más grande que
cualquier circunstancia. Él nos
guía en nuestros esfuerzos ya
que está presente en todo lo
que hacemos. “No temas, yo
