November 23, 2014. The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
From Your Pastor
My dearly beloved brothers and sisters in Christ:
The question or problem of suffering is one that has haunted man since reflective consciousness came into existence. Why is there suffering in the world? Why do some people seem to have lives of suffering more than others? Beneath this question is the question or problem of evil and that of free will. Recently, on Vatican Radio,
Monsignor Peter Fleetwood addressed the question of suffering by asking if God exists then why does He permit
cancer?
“(Vatican Radio) For another in his series 'Why Bother? Staying Catholic despite it all', Monsignor Peter Fleetwood tells us how one of the most taboo subjects is "the big C", cancer, which seems to have such a grip on us.
But people rarely talk about cancer. They hardly ever use the word, especially when talking about someone who
is living with it. Even when people are talking about someone with cancer, the word itself is often not mentioned.
But why is it so hard to speak about this disease? And again how is a Christian supposed to face a disease like cancer? Our instinct in the face of so much pain and humiliation is to scream at God, asking how a good God can allow it. Even when the anger is past, many give in to the temptation to jump from the impotence of the best doctors when it comes to cancer to the question: ‘why bother believing in God who lets this sort of thing happen?’
“Faith, Monsignor Fleetwood goes on to say, is meant to help us be more than just creatures of instinct, to see
beyond life's negatives, and even beyond the positives, to the basis of all life. And Christian faith has a remarkable
challenge in it: to believe that God, who is the basis of all life, is more powerful than everything negative we ever
come across. We are challenged to believe that God is more powerful than the most wicked person, more powerful than any horrendous sin that can be committed, more powerful than the most negative experience we can
ever have, and the worst of those is death. We may often wander into church for mass, and on Sundays we say the
words of the Creed, but how often do they sink in? Do you really believe Jesus rose from the dead? Because if you
do, there is nothing to fear.”
From my point of view, suffering is not only permitted by God because of the freedom God has given man, even
so far as to allow man to sin, but God has already redeemed suffering for mankind: suffering, when given to God,
becomes the opportunity for growth in relationship with God, mirrors the suffering of God for mankind, and actually begins to participate with God in Christ in His own self-donation, literally a pouring out, of Himself for the
union of Himself with man. Thus, our own suffering, when given to God, becomes not only a way of uniting
with God through the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ but also a way of uniting ourselves to the sufferings of
others, in whatever way they might suffer. Suffering, when given to God, is redeemed for us by God but also
becomes our participation in the redemption of others. To ask why God permits cancer is a permissible question,
but a much better question is “How can I make my suffering be a blessing for others?” Give your suffering to
Christ, and as Fr. Fleetwood said, “Because if you do, there is nothing to fear,” and in fact, much to be gained.

STEWARDSHIP: SHARING GOD’S GIFTS
The solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
When the Son of Man comes in glory, may we be among those who have fed the hungry, welcomed the stranger, and clothed
and naked. For Jesus tells us clearly that it is those who have demonstrated good stewardship by sharing their gifts with the less
fortunate who will receive God’s blessing and inherit the Kingdom.

VOCATION CORNER
NUESTRAS VOCACIONES
Evangelization is the work of God. “Though it is true that this
mission demands great generosity on our part, it would be
wrong to see it as a heroic individual undertaking, for it is first
and foremost the Lord’s work, surpassing anything which we
can see and understand. Jesus is “the first and greatest evangelizer”. In every activity of evangelization, the primacy always
belongs to God, who has called us to cooperate with him and
who leads us on by the power of his Spirit. The real newness
is God himself mysteriously brings about and inspires, provokes, guides and accompanies in a thousand ways. The life of
the Church should always reveal clearly that God takes the
initiative, that “he has loved us first” (1 Jn 4:19) and that He
alone “gives the growth” (1 Cor 3:7). This conviction enables
us to maintain a spirit of joy in the midst of a task so demanding and challenging that it engages our entire life. God asks
everything of us, yet at the same time he offers everything to
us.” (12) Pope Francis - Joy of the Gospel
December 18 to 20-Men’s discernment retreat. For
men ages 18-35 who are discerning a vocation to the priesthood. This is an opportunity to set aside some time of silence
to listen to the voice of God in your life. Phone interview
required for registration. $30 registration fee, scholarships
available. Space is limited. Deadline December 15. Retreat

THINKING ABOUT TO BECOMING A CATHOLIC?
RCIA in English for Adults
RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is an inquiry process for people who are thinking about the possibility of
becoming Catholic and are interested in learning more about the Catholic Church. It is for people who have never been
baptized, for people who have been baptized in other denominations and for those who were baptized as Catholic but did
not celebrate the sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Communion. This is a beautiful step by step process, with no
pressure to commit to our faith community, in which interested persons slowly explore the beliefs of the Catholic
Church and discern over a period of many months, if they desire to become Catholic. If you are interested, or have a relative, friend or co-worker who has expressed this interest, please encourage them to call Nadia Jara at 281)463-7878 or email her at: [email protected]
INTERESTED IN BEING A RCIA SPONSOR?
A beautiful way to renew and deepen your own faith and to learn more about our Catholic Church is to be a RCIA sponsor. In the RCIA process each person making inquiry about our Catholic faith has a sponsor. Sponsors do not need to
know all the answers or to be learned in theology. However, they do need to be a practicing catholic and be in good
standing with the Catholic Church. If you have a desire to share your faith and willingness to support another person in
their faith journey, this may be for you. If interested in this ministry, please call: Nadia Jara at 281)463-7878 or e-mail
her at: [email protected]

Lighthouse CD of the Week- –– Count Your Blessings by Dr. Scott Hahn
Dr. Scott Hahn explains the essential teachings from God's Word regarding the theology and practice of
Catholic family life based on the image of the Blessed Trinity, demonstrating that God's Word is all that is
needed to create a loving family life.
Parishioner Comments - “Tremendous presentation given by a husband and father who genuinely understands the root of the problems with the Catholic Church in the U.S. He clearly illustrates the consequences of men
who don't embrace their vocations as strong fathers and heads of their families.”

COUNTLESS WAYS TO HELP. The objective of SEAS
Respect Life and its Maternal Assistance Program is to
help many women choose life for their babies by providing
them with the financial assistance and the loving support they need to realize that abortion
isn't their only alternative. By offering medical
care, prenatal care, housing, baby items, child
care and others services we save the lives of
thousands of children. But in order to provide
this help, we need volunteers. There are numerous ways to help, ranging from delivering
baby items, to picking up donations, holding baby showers,
baby sitting, praying the rosary and just being a friend. To
receive a complete list of ways to help or to volunteer, contact Lia McLean at 832-766-2634 You are most welcome to
visit our center located at: Foundation for Life - Maternal
Assistance 10900 Northwest Freeway suite 112, Houston
TX 77064.

Holy Father St. Joseph Pray for Us!
San José, ¡Ruega por nosotros!
Extraordinary form of the Mass
Last Sunday after Pentecost
The Gospel today speaks of the terrifying last days that will precede our Lord's return at the end of time. It is going to be a difficult time, but it is also going to be a time of grace also, and so we must prepare ourselves for those
days. We must prepare for these days by faithfully practicing our Faith, virtues and charity, in otherwords, we
must keep growing in holiness. Stocking up on food and building a bunker is not going to help in anyway. No
one can hide from our Lord when He comes, and so if we are wise, we will prepare with a sincere desire to purify
ourselves and serve our Lord in our neighbor. We do not know when He will come. There are signs, but these can be difficult to
interpret. Just think of those who lived through the Black Plague. They were convinced that the end of the world had come. Many
died in those days, but the world continues even today. We cannot know when the end of the world will come. We read in the
Gospels of Sts Matthew and Mark: "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.” (Matt 24:36 and Mark 13:32) St. Thomas says that the time of the future judgment is unknown, for this knowledge is
most fittingly reserved to the Father Himself, since the end of the world and the day of judgment will be the result of the Divine
Power alone, without any co-operation of a created cause, just as the world received its existence immediately from God. St. Thomas says that our Lord seems to assign this very reason when He said: “It is not for you to know the times or moments which the
Father has put in His own Power,” (Acts 1:7) this is as though He were to say “which are reserved to his power alone”. We do not
need specific knowledge of when Christ is going to come again, as there was in the prophesies concerning the first coming in the
flesh. That day had to be clearly foretold in order for us to recognize that it is He who has come, for He came secretly and humbly. But the Second Coming will be open and manifest, such that there can be no error concerning the knowledge of His coming. In
today’s gospel, Christ warns us of the false prophets, so that we will not be easily deceived, and then He uses a powerful simile to
show us how manifest His coming will be. "For as the lightning in the East appears also in the West, so shall the coming of the Son of
Man be" (Matt 24:27), and again a little further, “and then shall appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven, and then shall all the
tribes of the earth mourn; and they shall see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven with much power and majesty.” (Matt
24:30) The saints desired to live in the last days because they know God's grace will also abound. Let us not live in fear of these
times, rather, let us persevere at our good works and prayers so that we are truly ready for our Lord when He comes. If we treat
each other as we would treat Christ Himself, then when He does come, our meeting with Him will be as dear friends meeting again.
