“TOGETHER BUILDING THE KINGDOM OF GOD”

Return to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s
Today, the Gospel presents for our consideration a “famous” assertion from Jesus Christ: «Return to Caesar what
is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s» (Mt 22:21).
We would not be able to properly grasp the meaning of this sentence without bearing in mind the context in which
Jesus said it into: «The Pharisees went out and took counsel on how they could trap Jesus with his own words» (Mt 22:15)
but «Jesus understood their evil intent» (v. 18). Thus, Jesus’ reply is a calculated one. When they heard it, the Pharisees
were surprised, as they did not expect it. If Jesus’ answer would had clearly been against Caesar, they might had been
able to denounce him; if, on the contrary, Jesus had been in favor of paying the taxes to Caesar, they would have left very
pleased with their ruse. But, while not speaking against Caesar, Jesus has relativized his reply: we must return to God what
is God’s, and God is the Lord of even the powers of this world.
As every other ruler, Caesar cannot exert an arbitrary power, because his power has been left to him in warrant;
as the servants of the parable of the talents, that had to account to their Master for the use given to his money. In St. John’s
Gospel, Jesus tells Pilatus: «You would have no power over me if it had not been given to you from above» (Jn 19:10).
Jesus does not want to appear as a political agitator. He simply put things right.
Matthew 22:21 has, at times, been interpreted in the sense that Church should not “mix up in political life”, but
mind only its salvific mission and faith. But this interpretation is totally false, because dealing with God’s matters does not
mean to mind only the cult of the Church, but to be also concerned about men, who are God’s children, and about man’s
justice. Pretending the Church does not move from the sacristy, while being deaf, blind and mute before the moral and
human problems and abuses of our time, amounts to stealing from God what belongs to God. «Tolerance that only accepts
God as a private opinion, but denies Him the public knowledge (...) is not tolerance, but hypocrisy» (Benedict XVI).

CRUCIAN BREAKFAST. The members of the Neocatecumenal Way are
having a Crucian Breakfast on Saturday, November 22, 2014 from 8:00 a.m-.

during office hours. Tickets are $10.00. The proceeds will go towards the needs

THE FRATERNITY OF OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS, the Secular Franciscan Order of St. Croix, invites you to come to the Franciscan House, Upper

and to experience what it means to be a disciple of St. Francis and to consider
becoming a member of this world wide fraternity, Franciscan Bishop O’Malley

“JUNTOS CONSTRUYENDO EL REINO DE DIOS”
Lo del César devolvédselo al César, y lo de Dios a Dios
Hoy, se nos presenta para nuestra consideración una “famosa” afirmación de Jesucristo: «Lo del César devolvédselo al César, y lo de Dios a Dios» (Mt 22,21).
No entenderíamos bien esta frase sin tener en cuenta el contexto en el que Jesús la pronuncia: «los fariseos se fueron
y celebraron consejo sobre la forma de sorprenderle en alguna palabra» (Mt 22,15), y Jesús advirtió su malicia. Así, pues, la respuesta de Jesús está calculada. Al escucharla, los fariseos quedaron sorprendidos, no se la esperaban.
Si claramente hubiese ido en contra del César, le habrían podido denunciar; si hubiese ido claramente a favor de pagar
el tributo al César, habrían marchado satisfechos de su astucia. Pero Jesucristo, sin hablar en contra del César, lo ha
relativizado: hay que dar a Dios lo que es de Dios, y Dios es Señor incluso de los poderes de este mundo.
El César, como todo gobernante, no puede ejercer un poder arbitrario, porque su poder le es dado en “prenda”
o garantía; como los siervos de la parábola de los talentos, que han de responder ante el Señor por el uso de los talentos. En el Evangelio de san Juan, Jesús dice a Pilatos: «No tendrías contra mí ningún poder, si no se te
hubiera dado de arriba» (Jn 19,10). Jesús no quiere presentarse como un agitador político. Sencillamente, pone las
cosas en su lugar.
La interpretación que se ha hecho a veces de Mt 22,21 es que la Iglesia no debería “inmiscuirse en política”,
sino solamente ocuparse del culto. Pero esta interpretación es totalmente falsa, porque ocuparse de Dios no es sólo
ocuparse del culto, sino preocuparse por la justicia, y por los hombres, que son los hijos de Dios. Pretender que la
Iglesia permanezca en las sacristías, que se haga la sorda, la ciega y la muda ante los problemas morales y humanos
de nuestro tiempo, es quitar a Dios lo que es de Dios. «La tolerancia que sólo admite a Dios como opinión privada,
pero que le niega el dominio público (…) no es tolerancia, sino hipocresía» (Benedicto XVI).

DESAYUNO CRUZANO. Los miembros del Camino Neocatecumenal, tendrán un desayuno cruzano (Cruzan Breakfast) el sábado 22 de noviembre de
8:00 a 11.00 de la mañana en el estacionamiento de la iglesia. Les pedimos
que nos ayuden en la compra de los boletos que están disponibles después de
la misa y en la rectoría en horas de oficina. El precio es de $10.00. Los fondos
se destinarán a las necesidades de nuestra parroquia. Gracias.
LA IGLESIA DE HOLY CROSS tendrá un Concierto Espiritual con Viola
Brzezinska de Chicago, para recaudar fondos para la escuela de St. Mary’s,
los días 23 y 24 de octubre a las 6:30 p.m. Niños menores de 12 años $3.00 y
adultos $7.00.
La segunda colecta del próximo domingo 26 de octubre será para
nuestro Programa del Catecismo. Gracias.
LA FRATERNIDAD DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LOS ÁNGELES, la
Orden Franciscana Seglar de Sta. Cruz, les invita a ir a la Casa Franciscana en
Upper Love, el domingo 26 de octubre de 3:00 p.m. a 5:00 p.m. para escuchar y
experimentar lo que significa ser un discípulo de san Francisco y de considerar
convertirse en un miembro de esta gran fraternidad mundial. El obispo franciscano O’Malley comenzó ésta Fraternidad en 1986 y siguen floreciendo con
treinta y cinco hermanas y hermanos entre ellos dos sacerdotes.
DE LA CANCILLERIA. Este año la Sexta Gala Anual del Galardón de las
Llaves y Espada, se llevará a cabo el sábado 31 de enero del 2015 a las 6:00 p.m.
en el Hotel Marriott Frenchman’s Reef, en St. Thomas. Los homenajeados de
este año se darán a conocer en la edición de noviembre del “Catholic Islander”.
Muchas gracias por apoya este evento y el continuo esfuerzo para terminar la
restauración de la Catedral de San Pedro y San Pablo.
El St. Croix Lions Club (Club de Leones) se ha unido a la Campaña
Mundial del Club de Leones Internacional para la recolección de espejuelos usados. Para este propósito se han colocado cajas identificadas en negocios a través
de toda la isla. Si tienen espejuelos que ya no les sirven, éstos pueden ayudar
a otros más necesitados en áreas rurales e inaccesibles alrededor del mundo.
Por favor, compartan, para que otros puedan ver. Pueden entregárselos al Sr.
Pablo Rojas después de la misa o buscar las cajitas en negocios participantes.
Ayuden al Club de Leones a ayudar.

ORACION POR LOS SACERDOTES
Jesús, Sacerdote eterno, guarda a estos siervos en el recinto de tu Corazón, donde
nadie pueda hacerles daño alguno; guarda inmaculadas sus manos consagradas que a
diario tocan tu Sagrado Cuerpo; guarda sin mancha esos
corazones sellados con el sublime Sacerdocio; haz tu santo
amor los envuelva y separe del contacto del mundo Bendice
sus trabajos con frutos abundantes y sean las almas por ellos dirigidas y administradas, su consuelo y gozo aquí en la
tierra y después su hermosa corona en el Cielo.
Después de la Santa Comunión vi al Señor
Jesús que me dijo estas palabras: Hoy, penetra en el
espíritu de Mi pobreza y organiza todo de tal modo
que los más pobres no tengan nada que envidiarte.
No en los grandes palacios ni en las esplendidas
instalaciones, sino en el corazón puro y humilde
Me complazco.
Al quedarme sola empecé a reflexionar sobre el
espíritu de pobreza. Veo claramente que Jesús no
poseía nada siendo el Dueño del todas las cosas.
El pesebre prestado; camina por la vida haciendo
el bien a todos sin tener donde apoyar la cabeza.
Y en la cruz veo el colmo de su pobreza, ya que ni
siquiera tiene puesta una vestidura. Oh Jesús, a
través del solemne voto de pobreza deseo asemejarme a Ti; la pobreza será mi madre. No poseer
nada exteriormente ni disponer de nada como de mi
propiedad, ni tampoco desear algo interiormente.
Y en el Santísimo Sacramento ¡que grande es Tu
pobreza! ¿Hubo alguna vez un alma tan abandonada como Tu, Jesús, en la cruz?
