It’s what city health officials are
strongly urging pregnant women to do this
summer.
There have been 346 city cases
of the mosquito-borne virus.
As the number of pregnant women
approved for Zika testing in New York City
continues to rise, concerned health officials
have ramped up travel warnings in hopes
of convincing women to avoid visiting the
Caribbean, Latin America and South America
during their pregnancy.
“If you’re pregnant, or trying to become
pregnant, you should not travel to areas where
there is ongoing Zika transmission,” stated
Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett at
a recent press briefing held at the Department
of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Long Island
City headquarters.
To date, there have been 346 cases of the
mosquito-borne virus in New York
City, including 41 pregnant women,
Bassett said. So far, all of the cases
have been travel-related, with about
two-thirds of them connected to the
Dominican Republic.
More than 2,000 pregnant women
in the city have met the criteria for
Zika testing, said Bassett.
“We’re seeing between 40 and 50
pregnant women every day are being
cleared for testing,” she commented.
“It just keeps going up. This is a
source of great concern to me.”

Zika-related microcephaly has been confirmed.
Ethnic Media (CCEM) at the CUNY Graduate
School of Journalism, Bassett stressed that
Zika is not a life-threatening illness, and said
that about 80 percent of those who contract
the disease will not get sick at all. Those that
do will typically experience mild symptoms
such as a rash and flu-like illness.
However, Bassett said that Zika’s primary
danger lies in its link to birth defects,
including microcephaly, which causes babies
to be born with brain damage and abnormally
small heads.
“It can have devastating consequences on
developing babies,” said Bassett.
“With the numbers that we’re seeing, I think
it’s just a matter of time before we see a baby
with microcephaly born here,” she added.
Those words proved prophetic, as two
days after the July 20 press briefing, health
officials confirmed the first case of a baby
born in New York City with Zika-related
microcephaly.
The Department of Health is launching
a new Zika-related social media campaign
aimed at pregnant women, and will increase
subway, television and print ads.
“The main person I want to protect from
Zika is the pregnant woman,” Bassett stated.
As Zika can also be spread by sexual
transmission, health officials said that partners
of pregnant women should use protection for
several weeks after traveling to an area where
Zika is prevalent.

I
t’s been a year since Julissa
Pérez found out she was cancerfree.
“There are good days, and there are bad
days,” said the 31-year-old Inwood resident,
who battled thyroid cancer and underwent
radiation treatment.
It has been a long journey.
“The after-effects of cancer are a process
too,” she noted.
Her battle inspired her to raise
awareness and to seek to create a
network she bills as “supportive,
uplifting, and educational” for anyone
fighting or affected by cancer.
On Tues., Aug. 9th at Mamajuana
Café, Pérez is hosting a reception she
has titled “My Beauty Mark,” named
after her acceptance of her own cancer
surgery scar.
While the event will feature raffles,
music, hors d’oeuvre and networking,
its principal focus will be hearing from
cancer survivors and other speakers,
including Eileen Z. Fuentes, Cancer
Care Coach and Wellness Specialist.
Some present are actively waging
battle against the disease.
Among them are Gisela Crespo, who
was first diagnosed in 1995 with Stage
1 breast cancer and went into remission.

received her diagnosis of Stage 1 pilocytic
astrocytoma, a brain tumor that predominantly
afflicts children and young adults.
Myahliah has been undergoing chemotherapy
treatments for about a year and a half.
“Their stories are powerful, and strong,” said
Pérez.
During her treatment and recovery, Pérez
often needed to take sick days from work.
The experience made her ponder how others
battling cancer are able to undergo treatment
and support their families at the same time.

Harlem gets IDNYC
pop-up enrollment
center until July 29

H
urry up, Harlem.
For a short time, uptown residents
will have easier access to an IDNYC card.
The Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs
(MOIA) and Department of Consumer
Affairs (DCA) have launched a pop-up
enrollment center at Carver Federal Savings
Bank’s 125th Street Branch, which will be
open until July 29.
It marks the second time that the city has
used a financial institution as an enrollment
setting for IDNYC, following a pop-up effort
at Spring Bank in the Bronx earlier this
month.
DCA Commissioner Lorelei Salas said
that a Central Harlem bank was as important
a target for a temporary enrollment site, as
DCA research showed that 20 percent of the
neighborhood’s households did not have a
bank account.
IDNYC is accepted as a primary form
of identification for account opening at 12
financial institutions citywide, including
Carver, giving New Yorkers who previously
lacked proper documents for opening a bank
account new access to financial services.
Salas joined Carver’s Chief Executive
Officer Michael T. Pugh at the 125th Street
branch on July 21 to officially launch the popup site.
Citywide, there are about 360,000
households without a checking or savings
account, Salas said.
“There are another 780,000 households
that are ‘underbanked,’ which means that
although they may have a bank account,
they may continue to use services like check
cashers and loan sharks,” said Salas.
Pugh explained that Carver was
founded in 1948 as a community
bank designed to serve an
underbanked population that did
not have access to mainstream
banking.
“This [pop-up] program is
the true essence of what we do,
which is to extend and reach out
to the community, and make sure

launch of DCA’s Collaborative
for Neighborhood Financial
Health initiative, through
which the agency will partner
with community groups to

go without a meal.
That’s why the Department of Education
(DOE) is, once again, offering completely
free, nutritious breakfasts and lunches to
anyone 18 years or younger in New York
City all summer long.
With nearly 1,100 sites in all five boroughs,
the summer meals program ensures that
children will have easy access to meals over
summer break, so they can start the school
year ready to learn.
If you haven’t already, I encourage you
to participate in this important program and
help us raise awareness. New York City’s
summer meals program is the largest in the
country, and together, we can make sure that
children don’t go hungry during the summer
months.
Eating healthy, regular meals is an essential
part of every child’s development. Hungry
children have trouble concentrating, and
often suffer from frequent stomachaches,
headaches and other medical issues. Children
and families in New York City, no matter their
zip code, deserve access to high-quality food.
The program is the
largest in the country.
Already, summer meals have been a
tremendous success – in 2015, we served 8.2
million meals, up from the 7.1 million meals
served in 2012 – and we hope to make even
more progress this year.

The Giving Garden

T
hey hit gold with a bit of green.
A group of Harlem seniors recently
received a green-thumbed gift, as a backyard
garden behind their supportive housing
residence was renovated.
On Wed., July 20, members of Rebuilding
Together NYC and the West Side Federation
for Senior and Supportive Housing
(WSFSSH) joined forces with volunteers
from HSBC Bank to spruce up the backyard
space at 29 West 126th Street.
The WSFSSH-operated property features
seven apartments for seniors with special
needs.
Volunteers removed weeds, trimmed
hedges, planted flowers and assembled a
picnic table for residents to use.
Since 1980, WSFSSH has renovated or
built 24 buildings in Manhattan and the Bronx
that now house more than 1,800 people,
mostly elderly, handicapped and special
needs individuals.
Angie Lantigua, WSFSSH’s Site Director
for 29 West 126th Street, said the garden is
intended to bring comfort to the tenants.
“We try every year to maintain it,” she said.
“But it’s difficult for the super to do it, so we
bring in volunteers when the weather is nice.”
For the first time, vegetables were also
planted in the garden.
“It’s a fantastic feeling,”
said Kelly Wilson.
“It’ll be a good way for residents to get
their own fresh vegetables, and will even save
them money at the store,” Lantigua said.

employees who helped fix up the garden, said
his company participates in urban renewal
projects on a quarterly basis.
“We really want to contribute back to the

Also that day, Rebuilding Together NYC

“This is part of our community renewal
goal,” said Terry Scott, Director of
Construction for Rebuilding NYC. “It’s about
giving those in need a sense of pride about
where they live.”

If you are not frightened after the 4-day
infomercial of intolerance, xenophobia and
racism then you are, like far too many people
in this country, sleepwalking towards tyranny.
The rank hate, anger and bigotry on display
at the so-called Republican convention was
downright chilling. Fear – of crime, of Muslims,
of immigrants, of Black protesters – was the
guiding theme of the festivities as well as Trump’s
entire campaign.
Al Baldasaro, who is one of Donald Trump’s
advisers, said on Tuesday that Hillary Clinton
“should be put in front of a firing line and shot
for treason.” Governor Chris Christie worked
the crowd into a frenzied lather as they chanted
“lock her up, lock her up.” This type of talk is
dangerous and does not bode well for a country
that is becoming more and more polarized by the
nanosecond. We are on the precipice of despotism
and massive, systemwide volatility.
The incredibly shrill and absurdly tone-deaf
opinion piece that ran in the NY Daily News
recently caused a total uproar on social media. So
much so that the writer of the piece, Ann Votaw,
has since deleted her Twitter account. Please read
my response to the ugly Op-Ed. Anita Abedian of
the Village Voice took us to Harlem to find out how
a group of artists are fighting discrimination with
street art. Rebecca Baird-Remba of NY YIMBY
revealed the latest proposed project for East
Harlem, 1516 Park Avenue.

supermarket

his desert might soon be made
even drier.
A large crowd of community residents
gathered in scorching heat last Friday outside
of the City Fresh Market on 116th Street in
East Harlem for a boisterous rally to call for
an S.O.S. – “Save our Supermarket” – in
protest over the store’s pending closure.
The market, located at 125 East 116th
Street, is slated to shut down at the end of July
because landlord BLDG Management plans
to develop the site into a residential building
and lease the ground floor to a Walgreens
instead of City Fresh, officials said.
Protesters were joined at the July 22 rally by
City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito
and State Senator Adriano Espaillat, who
warned that closing the market would worsen
the already meager access that community
members have to fresh, affordable produce.

left 200 employees out of work and locals

the news about City Fresh could not come at
a worse time.
“This is about equity and justice — food
justice,” said Mark-Viverito.
City Fresh owner Anthony Espinal
appealed to the property owners to work out
an arrangement that could allow the market
to remain.
“My store has fed this community for
years and provided good paying jobs to local
residents,” said Espinal. “I hope that the
decision makers will heed East Harlem’s call
for healthy and affordable food, and allow
City Fresh Market to continue serving this
neighborhood for many years to come.”
Espaillat pointed out that a similar situation
existed earlier this year in Washington
Heights, when an Associated Supermarket on
Fort Washington Avenue had been tabbed for
closure and was due to become a Walgreens
location.
After a swell of community support and
appeals from elected officials, that store was
rescued from closure after Walgreens agreed
to sublease the property to Associated.
Officials expressed hope that a similar deal
could be brokered in East Harlem.

Armory names finish line for Dinkins

ow they’ll make a dash for
Dinkins.
Former New York City Mayor David
Dinkins was honored at The Armory in
Washington Heights, as the New Balance
Track and Field Center celebrated the naming
of the “David Dinkins Starting Line” during a
ceremony on Thurs., July 21.
Dinkins, elected the city’s first AfricanAmerican mayor in 1990, is considered an
essential figure in transforming The Armory,
which was being used as a homeless center
at the time, into a world-class track and field
venue with numerous programs that help atrisk youth.
“Mayor Dinkins started it all here at The
Armory over 20 years ago,” said Dr. Norbert
Sander, President of the Armory Foundation.
“He believed in us and in the children of New
York City. We can now say, thanks to him, we
have seen over one million youngsters train,
compete and prepare for future success right
here in Washington Heights.”
At the ceremony, hosted by the Armory
Foundation and New York Road Runners,
Dinkins was feted by a host of uptown leaders
and elected officials.

Linares recalled when The Armory served a
much different purpose.
“There were a thousand homeless men
sleeping here,” remarked Linares. “Dinkins
said, ‘Let’s renovate this and turn it into a
place to help our children.’”
Sander said that The Armory’s rejuvenation
began in 1993 when Dinkins handed him the
symbolic “key to the Armory” and tasked him
with elevating the facility.
At the ceremony, Sander returned the favor
by returning the oversized red key back to
Dinkins.
“I wanted to give the key back because he
is a bigger man than me,” Sander remarked.
The Armory, built in the early 20th century,
now hosts more than
100 track meets a year,
and is also home to the
Armory College Prep
program, the National
Track and Field Hall
of Fame and other
events
benefitting
Washington Heights
and the surrounding
communities.
During the last
five years, Armory
College Prep has
placed 95 percent of
its participants into
college, noted Sander.
Last February, The
Armory hosted its
fifth NYRR Millrose
Games, considered
the nation’s top indoor track and field meet.
“The Millrose Games and Colgate Games
left Madison Square Garden for here,” said
Sander.
Rodríguez hailed Dinkins as “one of the
city’s first truly progressive” mayors.
“A lot of other people took credit for things
Dinkins did,” said Rodríguez.
Dinkins accepted the accolades in humble
fashion, saying that though he was flattered
by the attention but was only doing what he
was supposed to do for the community. He
said that The Armory has been essential in
improving the lives of young people.
“I still get emotional thinking about it,”
said Dinkins.

As the city sweltered in 90-plusdegree heat this past weekend, more than
1,000 East Harlem residents were forced
to sweat out the high temperatures without
electricity, as a power outage hit the
neighborhood.
The blackout began Saturday evening and
initially affected around 1,100 customers,
according to Con Edison. Customers
between 116th and 119th streets east of First
Avenue were affected.
As of Sunday, about 300 users were still

excessive heat, and that the exact cause is
still being investigated.
All customers in the area had their power
restored as of Monday morning, said the
spokesperson.
On Monday evening, Con Edison was
forced to restore power to more than 14,000
customers after severe thunderstorms

need a bag.

living in New York City homeless
shelters run the risk of starting
school in September without
the basic necessities like
notebooks,
dictionaries,
protractors,
compasses,
calculators and flash drives
– or something to carry
them in.
The average cost of a
filled backpack is $81
– an expense very few
families in homeless
shelters can afford.
But the initiative
Operation BackPack, a program
of Volunteers of America-Greater New York
(VOA-GNY), aims to ensure that every
child living in a homeless shelter in the five
boroughs is fully prepared when the school
bell rings in September.

purchase, fill and donate brand
new, good quality backpacks
and bring them to official

A new initiative to create 50 youth
soccer fields in underserved neighborhoods
throughout the five boroughs – including
P.S. 83 in East Harlem and Harlem Lane
Playground on West 151st Street – was
recently announced.
The New York City Soccer Initiative is
a public-private partnership between the
Mayor’s Office, U.S. Soccer Foundation,
the New York City Football Club (NYCFC),
adidas and the Mayor’s Fund to Advance
NYC.
Over the next five years, all five partners
will invest a total of $3 million to build and
maintain the artificial turf fields.

it can be a starting line for their lives, because
through sports they can do better, because
through this facility they can get out of the
streets and move forward.”
After the words of praise, the group moved
to the track, where the Harlem Children’s
Zone Summer Games were taking place. The
event was paused while the Dinkins officially
unveiled a plaque marking the finish line
named in his honor.
Afterwards, several children from the
Summer Games lined up to meet Dinkins.
“We owe the generations behind us the
opportunity to achieve their potential,” said
Dinkins. “Without these youngsters, there is
no future; there really isn’t.”

without spray caps is illegal, wasteful, and
dangerous. Illegally opened hydrants can
lower water pressure and put lives at risk if
there is a fire.
Children can also be at serious risk,
because the powerful force of an open
hydrant without a spray cap can knock a
child down, causing an injury.
The unauthorized opening of city fire
hydrants can increase during heat waves.
However, opening a hydrant without
a spray cap lowers water pressure and
can hinder firefighting by reducing the
flow of water to hoses and pumps. The
reduction of water pressure
resulting
from
illegally
opened hydrants can also
cause problems at hospitals
and other medical facilities.
Opening a hydrant illegally
can result in fines of up to
$1,000, imprisonment for up to
30 days, or both.
Hydrants can be opened
legally if equipped with a city-approved

spray cap. One illegally
opened hydrant can release
more than 1,000 gallons of
water per minute, while a
hydrant with a spray cap
releases 20 to 25 gallons per minute.
Spray caps can be obtained by an adult 18
or over, free of charge, at local firehouses.
New Yorkers are urged to report illegally
opened fire hydrants to 311. DEP has
additional staff on call to respond to reports
of illegally opened fire hydrants.

that many of his patients travel to the
Dominican Republic at least once a year.
He said that several females who use his
practice have partners who reside in that
country.
“When I talk to them about importance of
using protection, it catches their attention,”
he said.
Mendoza said that despite the city’s
outreach efforts regarding Zika, many New
Yorkers are still unaware of the virus, or do
not take warnings seriously.
“Many of our patients feel that Zika only
happens to people who are in the woods, or if
they go to a resort or if they’re in the capital
of a Caribbean country, and other than that
they can’t get Zika,” said Mendoza. “They
think it’s someone else’s disease.”
Mendoza recommended that if travel
is unavoidable, people should use insect
repellant, long-sleeves and pants and avoid
areas with standing water.
“Pregnant women who do travel should get
tested for Zika when they return, even if they
don’t have any symptoms,” said Mendoza.
Also at the press briefing, Dr. Sonia Angell
of New York-Presbyterian Hospital described
findings of a report related to insurance status
and access to primary care for immigrant New
Yorkers.
Nearly half of New Yorkers are foreignborn, including about 80 percent of Asians,
half of Latinos and about 40 percent of blacks,
said Angell.

devastating to the community if City Fresh

“We already lost Pathmark, and you won’t
find another supermarket on 125th Street
unless you go 10 blocks or more away,” he
said. “For seniors, that would be terrible.”
Veloz noted that the East Harlem City
Fresh runs a shuttle bus that picks up local
elderly residents, brings them in to shop
then takes them back home with their

for the community,” he said. “The people
that work here, we’ve known them for a

which don’t always carry fresh fruit and
vegetables, Levine said.
“Our folks won’t have anywhere else to
shop,” she remarked. “Farmers markets are
nice, but are not always readily accessible.
Supermarkets are open more hours and
provide more services. It would be a big
loss.”
Eusebio confirmed that Espinal has had
discussions with Walgreens officials to see
if the pharmacy chain would sublease the
location.
“As a business, Walgreens needs to
understand, when a community is asking
‘please don’t come, we have enough of
your services here,’ I think they should
adhere to what the public wants,” remarked
Eusebio.
Walgreens did not immediately respond
to a request for comment.
“It’s down to the wire, we have two more
weeks, so we’re fighting really hard to stay
here,” Eusebio said.
As he departed the rally, Espaillat vowed
to fight to save City Fresh and forge an
outcome similar to the one that preserved
Associated Supermarket further uptown.
“I am looking to make sure this has the
same type of ending,” he said.

“I can’t believe that something like this is
happening in New York City,” remarked Reyna.
“Soccer fields will be built in 50 different
neighborhoods. It’s a great day for soccer, but
most importantly, for the kids.”
Reyna said that the majority of children
playing soccer in the United States live
in suburban areas, and stressed that urban
communities are in dire need of recreational
fields.
“Along with the benefits like all the exercise
and life skills, the most important thing is just to
have a place to play,” stated Reyna.
