To those who say, 'I don't feel like doing this,' the response is if you don't feel like it, that's your problem, but this is the Christian way. This is the path that Jesus teaches us. The reason to take the path of Jesus, which is mercy, is that only with a merciful heart can we do all that the Lord advises us, until the end. The Christian life is not a selfreflexive life but it comes outside of itself to give to others: it is a gift, it is love, and love does not turn back on itself, it is not selfish: it gives itself!" — Pope Francis Sixteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time—C—July 17,2016 We are told in today’s Scripture: “Mary sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak”; and later on Jesus saying “Mary has chosen the better part.” Since the word “disciple” has at its root the verb “to listen,” we can assert that “listening is at the very core of being a disciple of Jesus.” In the Bible, listening and hospitality are linked one to another. Hospitality in Israelite and Semitic culture was, in Biblical times, more than social convention. It was a religious act. This act was mandated by the Scriptures and by tradition, and it extended to family, neighbor and stranger. In order to understand the Martha/Mary tension of today’s narrative, we need to place ourselves in a different cultural setting than the one we experience now. In today’s narrative, Jesus is a guest. The hospitality extended to him was warm and detailed. I am amazed by this story! Abraham, sitting at this doorway under a tree, sees three strangers approach. He runs to greet them. He sees to the bathing of their tired dusty feet. He sits them down under his tree. He feeds them. They engage in conversation. The story is a little ambiguous, but Abraham comes to know them as someone(s) divine. He responds with lavish hospitality. Perhaps my mercy work this week is wrestling with these discipleship questions: How will I greet and treat strangers? How can I, who can I literally bathe or “bathe” with kindness? Who will I feed dinner? Martha is about the nitty-gritty of making Jesus feel welcomed and cherished. Mary was no less attentive, but her hospitality was focused on the guest’s presence by listening to him. Both Martha and Mary together comprise authentic hospitality. In no way does Jesus belittle Martha’s behavior. Yet why does Jesus say Mary has chosen the better part? In traditional Christian spirituality, since it is biblical, hospitality has a significant religious dimension. Jesus is not only the host in the Christian church, he is also the guest. When we greet him into our homes and hearts, we do so as disciples. Therefore, we listen! Listening does not trump other elements of hospitality, but it is the one that makes the others meaningful. Last Sunday's "Good Samaritan" parable concluded with Jesus' command: Go provide hands-on mercy to the next person you meet, no conditions, no limits, no exceptions. But today, Jesus seems to criticize Martha's hands-on mercy of hospitality, while praising Mary's "hands-off" as "choosing the better part" (Luke 10:42). Mary sat listening (10:39), leaving Martha "burdened with much serving by herself" (10:40). So, is the contemplative life of prayerful silence "superior," but the active life of earning a living, raising a family, running parishes, schools, hospitals, and social service ministries "second-class" discipleship? No; Jesus' example is not either/or but both/and: silent communion with God, boundless compassion for people. If we do not seek Jesus in silent prayer, how will we find Jesus in all others? If we do not serve Jesus in others, will our worship, despite its beauty, be anything but empty ritual? This Jubilee Year of Mercy offers us Jesus' two-fold challenge: both "go and do" and "sit and listen." --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Somewhat paradoxically, Jesus is the guest in the church! (He is also the host). We invite him to speak to us and we commit ourselves to hear his voice. That’s what a good host, a good disciple does. —Fr. Richard Grek, CR Lighthouse CD Spotlight God of My Past, God of My Future Presented by Lighthouse Catholic Youth: Recorded live at two of Life Teen's XLT events, Mark Hart and Matt Smith reveal the depth of God's infinite love for each of us, and challenge us to find out what happens when we abandon everything to Him. Do you put them in an out-of-the way place and not look at them too often…..maybe just once in a while? You can clean out that place, organize a little, and gift some of those beautiful bags without any guilt. The Elizabeth Ministry can put those gift bags to good use, since we easily go through 100+ bags annually. Generally the bags are used for our Baptism Bags, Pregnancy Bags, and Personal Visit Bags. We can use solid color, bright and pastel, stripes, dots, floral, baby, child; any style that would work for a boy, girl or mom. Our supply of smaller bags is adequate right now, but we are looking for mid-size to large bags (9½” x 12” or larger) to accommodate a handmade sweater or blanket and gifts for newly Baptized children. Please help us out by dropping off gift bags in the Mary room where there is a bin marked Elizabeth Ministry Gift Bags. And, thank you for your past generosity! Another gift that keeps on giving! The Elizabeth Ministry Thanks You! 2.- Señor, si he alcanzado tu favor, no pases de largo junto a tu siervo.
