Mary Ferreira, Office Manager Richard Sepulveda, Facilities Manager Mass Moments of Mercy A couple of months ago I was asked by a mom to speak to her son. He’s in his twenties and living on his own. It seems that he’d made some decisions that she and his dad weren’t happy with (as many young adults will). But since they voiced their disapproval, he stopped talking with them or even returning their calls. She hoped that I could talk with him, since he still seemed to like me. He agreed to talk. I’d like you to imagine that you’re at the same coffee shop. Now I know that you’re much too polite to eavesdrop on the conversation, but the shop is small and you can’t help but catch parts of the conversation. “My folks are still trying to control my life. I don’t need to follow their rules anymore.” He started. “Yeah”, I reply, “parents are like that, but they’re still your parents and love you. They still want to be part of your life.” His ultimate response was, “I don’t have room in my life for negative people.” I replied, “If you demand perfection from everyone around you, you’re the most negative person I know.” In the time since this conversation I’ve given it a lot of thought. (He’s talking to his folks again, by the way.) How am I negative? Where or from whom do I demand perfection? I know that one of the most challenging obstacles from me is that I insist on perfection in myself. I allow “perfection” to get in the way of “progress”. How can I even come into God’s presence at mass without perfection? I can be caught in a loop; unable to come for forgiveness unless I don’t need forgiveness (and I’m always in need of forgiveness.) The Holy Spirit is always “right on time.” For this personal quandary, the Spirit is working for me. Pope Francis has declared this year to be a Year of Mercy. In looking towards the year, I’ve been taking a closer look at the mass. At every mass there are at least twelve moments when we call for, and receive mercy. Time and space doesn’t allow me to go through them all today but I’m hoping to share them with you in the bulletin for the coming few weeks as we share, “Mass Moments of Mercy.” Dave Corder Peace The greeting of peace at Mass adds substance to a message of today’s readings: peace is relational. When we greet in peace the person near us at Mass, we share the touch of a handshake or embrace, sincere eye contact, and friendly words. The scriptures speak of a similar peace. The first reading from Isaiah describes the peace of the holy city, Jerusalem, a place of prosperity and comfort where the “LORD’s power shall be known to his servants” (Isaiah 66:14c). The Christian understanding of peace changes slightly. Paul writes of the “peace and mercy” on all who are created anew. Jesus describes a feeling of peace that will rest on those who accept his disciples and their message. Peace is both an absence of strife and a personal blessing. May we always and sincerely bring peace to our own lives as we share it with others. Bishop’s Ministry Appeal There is Still Time to Give! Though we are beginning to wind down this year’s Bishop’s Ministry Appeal (We will be accepting pledges and one-time gifts through June), this is an ideal time to make your gift. Through the generosity of 624 families, we have exceeded our goal of $147,000. Now, every dollar raised comes back to St. Anthony’s for the renovation of the girl’s bathroom at our School (which is used by several parish groups and Religious Education) and a program to help couples marry in the Catholic Church. Your gift of any size will help us make the 2016 BMA the best ever! Thanks so much!
