Review: gr-224 Mythos - Jules Verne Around the world in 80 Minutes
Mythos nos ofrece, un año después de su anterior trabajo, un nuevo
despliegue de contagiosa música electrónica, mediante su habitual uso
de sintetizadores, secuenciadores, mellotron, flauta, vocoder y harpa
láser. Al igual que en Jules Verne Forever, que vió la luz en el año
2015, Jules Verne: Around The World In 80 Minutes se centra en la
figura del escritor francés Julio Verne. Sin duda llamaba la atención
que, si bien Jules Verne Forever estaba inspirado en algunos de los
relatos más conocidos del visionario autor francés (Cinco Semanas en
Globo, Alrededor de la Luna, La Isla Misteriosa, hasta completar un
total de nueve), no había ninguna pieza que hiciese referencia directa
a su relato más conocido, La Vuelta al Mundo en 80 días. Ahora podemos
ver que tal proyecto quedaba reservado para este nuevo disco,
enteramente inspirado en el famosísimo relato. Así, Jules Verne Around The World in 80 Minutes, es una especie de banda sonora inspi r
ada en el fantástico viaje de Phileas Fogg. Los 80 días que invirtió
en completar su vuelta al mundo, quedan representados, a su vez, en
los 80 minutos que, divididos en 11 cortes musicales, componen este
trabajo. Centrándose en esa novela en particular, este nuevo trabajo
de Stephan Kaske es, según cuenta el propio autor, el legítimo trabajo
sucesor de Jules Verne Forever.
Como álbum conceptual, el trabajo ha sido concebido como una pieza
completa de 80 minutos, dividida en 11 cortes con transiciones
conínuas y sin cortes abruptos. Kaske recomienda escuchar el trabajo
de principio a fin, preferiblemente utilizando auriculares, para
apreciar mejor los detalles que quizás pudieran pasar desapercibidos

de otra forma. Como cabría esperar, Jules Verne - Around The World In
80 Minutes es un trabajo totalmente electrónico, muy en el estilo de
Mythos, plagado de sonidos sintéticos, aunque mezclados con algunos
sonidos de influencia étnica, dando lugar a lo que Kaske denomina Músi
ca Electrónica Maximal (no Minimal). Es, de hecho, muy interesante
escuchar cada uno de los cortes relacionándolo con tu título, que nos
guía en cada una de las etapas del viaje de Fogg.
Phileas Fogg's Dream, que da comienzo al disco, representa el prefacio
al fantástico viaje y en lo musical nos mantiene en vilo, hasta que
comienza Around the World in 80 Days con unas armonías y efectos
sorprendentes en su inicio que rápidamente se convierten en acordes
bajo un marcado ritmo, dando una imagen mental de los inicios y
preparativos del viaje y las aventuras que restan por delante. De la
misma forma, el resto de piezas describen el vuelo sobre el
Mediterráneo hasta llegar a Egipto, las estancias en Calcuta y Bombay,
el viaje desde Yokohama hasta San Francisco en los Estados Unidos, o
la vuelta hacia Liverpool a través de Océano Atlántico. El trabajo
termina con It Seens The Wager Has Been Lost, que representa el
momento en que a puesta parece haberse perdido finalmente o The
Triumph que, evidentemente, describe el triunfo final del inglés.
Los seguidores de Mythos, tanto si conocen su música desde sus
primeros trabajos en los años 70 como grupo cercano al krautrock, o
bien si le han conocido con sus trabajos más recientes, en el siglo
XXI, no quedarán defraudados. Una vez más la producción es
superlativa, con sonidos elaborados, secuencias sintéticas, o pads con
timbres sorprendentes.

and of colors. These sounds crumble the seconds of the "Berlin Zwei"
introduction and are caught up by sleepy layers which float such as
caresses of ether. Shadows of synth are zigzaging like spectral
laments over this fauna of tones spiced of organic flavors, amplifying
an ambient crescendo which dissipates when the first measures of
rhythm of "Berlin Zwei" spread a minimalist pattern where a line of
sequences lies down a mid-tempo which hiccups like an intergalactic
cha-cha to which one would have removed some measures. Recorded in
Stadtbad Steglitz in August, 2008 in Berlin, “The Pool Concert” is the
2nd part of Berlin, this long title of 50 minutes which nested on the
Analog Overdose-The Road Movie DVD released in 2012. Here the rhythm
is more nuanced and less edgy. A little less livened up I would sa y
but always so harmoniously hypnotic.
The first 30 minutes which follow this introduction of cosmic
atmospheres dive into a delicate rhythm of which the jumps in series
is of use as basis to the addition of pretty good elements of
percussions, as well as effects of percussions which adorn the
tranquility of this rhythm which makes dance our neurons while leaving
a full latitude to the beatitude. The synth frees good effects but
also charming and very ethereal solos which roll in loops and
sometimes take the forms of guitar tones, fooling an ear which wonders
if Lutz Graf-Ulbrich is as present as his shade which glides over the
harmonies of "Berlin Zwei". There is not much to say about “The Pool
Concert” because nothing is really happening here. The music is always
beautiful in its repetitive envelope. And Fanger & Schonwalder shows
magic by injecting a mass of dissimilar tones and nuances to the level
of the harmonies which adorn the 36 minutes of “The Pool Concert”. And
in the end, one wonders if it's really the end which strikes at the
door or emptiness so much that "Berlin Zwei" flows with all the
musical sweetness that the German duet accustomed to us since the
first Analog Overdose in 2001. This maybe not a major work but it
joins faithfully the register of Fanger & Schönwälder.

In order to close the dossier of the filter paper sizes of 100- 102,
Frank Rothe & Mario Schonwalder did the cleaning in old sessions of
recording and would have found some small jewels of a EM always bound
to the essences of retro Berlin School. More than 45 minutes were so
gather. “Filter-Kaffee 100” thus becomes so a prequel to the first 2

volumes of the series. We hear the first experiments of the Rothe &
Schonwalder here who offers a Berlin School style more centered on the
dark side of the glaucous atmospheres of a music which gave sometimes
shivers in the back if one would adapt it to a suspense and/or horror movie.
A din sculptured around metallic doors which we open and cosmic noises
are introducing the opening of "Night Shift". The rhythm becomes fluid
with a line of sequences which makes oscillate and stumble its keys in
a sonorous environment stuffed with echoes of hoops which collide,
whimperings of a kind of Theramin and amb ient layers filled with fog.
That sounds a little as the rhythms and the ambiences of Flashpoint.
"Bridge Over Troubled Oscillators and LFOs" is a long track loaded of
glaucous moods to which they have grafted certain elements of
ambiences of "Night Shift" to white noises and hummings of machinery.
"Shadows of the Darkshift" is more melodious. The rhythm is ambient
with sequences which swirl in the vapors of jingles and seraphic
voices before taking a slightly slower tangent. It's a slow cosmic
dance where sequences sparkle from all over and a line of bass draws
up a slightly sneaky structure. The mix of the voices and the
orchestrations gives us the shivers and raises the hair of the arms.
That makes very Repelen, without the string instruments. After an
introduction sewn in the suspense where knockings, heavy and uncertain
movements as well as slow layers of drizzle, "Rebound" plunges us into
a heavy rhythm Redshift. The synths throw lamentations of the Ricochet
time in a dense fog where the rhythm, which became a mix of Redshift
and TD of the Rubycon era, has difficulty in making tremble the wide
banks of mystic drizzle. This is definitively the key point of
“Filter-Kaffee 100” with "Shadows of the Darkshift". "Raindrops"
offers a Software static rhythm pattern. The sequences pour out good
movements of kick while other more crystalline sequences are
structuring some nice evasive harmonies in a sonic decoration filled
of hollow winds and of subtle singings rigged by a synth and its false
trumpets. We also hear distant spectral harmonies here, adding a
sibylline charm to this piece of music which gains to be more
scrutinized. "Midnight Session" is a long track of atmospheres
embroidered around filiform layers of resonant bass pulsations which
drag a fascinating placid heaviness. There are lots of misty and
spectral tones, as well as voices rather difficult to identify, which
escape from the depths of these layers also filled of greyness and of
metallic dus t s. Intense, due to the depth of the sounds and the
layers, enveloping and even incentive to the schizophrenia of the
sounds, "Midnight Session" looks like a theme music, amplified, where
the suspense and the mystery roams throughout its 16 minutes, making
of this “Filter-Kaffee 100” an album of more atmospheres than rhythms
which drinks of this nice period of the Dream but in a more modern envelope.
