La provincia del Neuquén se encuentra en el noroeste de la
Patagonia argentina. Limita al norte con la provincia de
Mendoza, al este con La Pampa, al sureste con Río Negro y al
oeste con la República de Chile. Posee una superficie total de
94.078 Km2. y ocupa el 2,5% de la superficie nacional y el
décimo cuarto lugar entre las 23 provincias de la República
Argentina. Su capital, homónima, concentra la mayor cantidad
de población neuquina, superando los 200 mil habitantes de los
550.334 totales. Es el centro comercial y financiero más
importante de la Patagonia. La principal es la explotación de
hidrocarburos. También, impulsan la economía provincial el
turismo, la fruticultura, la minería, la ganadería y el desarrollo
industrial ligado a la actividad petrolera, entre otros. A su vez,
es un importante centro de las principales casas de estudio de
la Universidad del Comahue y de otras universidades privadas.
The province is located in northwestern Patagonia, Argentina. It
borders with the province of Mendoza to the north, with La
Pampa to the east , with Negro River to the southeast and with
the Republic of Chile to the west. It has a total area of ​94,078
km2 and it occupies 2.5 % of the national territory and the
fourteenth place among the 23 Argentinian provinces. Its capital
city Neuquén has the highest concentration of population,
surpassing the 200 000 inhabitants of the total 550,334. It is the
most important commercial and financial center of Patagonia.
The main hydrocarbon exploitations are found here. Also, the
provincial economy is driven by tourism, fruit growing, mining,
livestock and industrial development linked to the oil industry,
among others. At the same time, there are important houses of
studies like Comahue National University and other private
universities.
Neuquén presenta dos paisajes bien
marcados: el de la Cordillera de Los
Andes –situado en la zona occidental - y
el de la meseta –en la zona oriental.
La región cordillerana se destaca por sus
altas cumbres y por poseer muchos de
los destinos turísticos más importantes
de Argentina. Desde el norte, el punto
más alto es el Volcán Copahue, con
2.980 metros; y al sur, en los Andes Patagónicos, es el volcán Lanín, con 3.776 metros. Al este
de la Cordillera Neuquina de Transición y casi paralela a ella en la parte norte del territorio,
se encuentra la denominada Cordillera del Viento, con alturas superiores a los 4.500 metros,
siendo el Volcán Domuyo, con 4.709 metros de altura, el más alto de la Provincia.
Entre una y otra cadena de montañas nace el río Neuquén, que da nombre a la Provincia y
que en lengua mapuche significa vehemente, impetuoso, audaz. A su vez, en la parte
oriental, se encuentra la zona extracordillerana, donde se produce un descenso de altitud
relativa y sus puntos más bajos se encuentran en el vértice oriental de la Confluencia –unión
entre los ríos Neuquén y Limay - y en el bajo de Añelo. Finalmente, el paisaje cambia en la
zona de mesetas, escalonada en terrazas descendentes hacia el mar, y enmarca también
pequeñas llanuras o pampas desérticas.
Neuquén is defined by two well-known
landscapes: the Andes Range, situated to
the west - and the plateau, to the east.
The mountainous region is famous for its
high peaks and hosts a wealth of major
tourist destinations of Argentina.
Towards the north, we find the Copahue
Volcano, 2980 meters high, and
southwards, the Andes Range is
dominated by the Lanin volcano with 3776 meters. East of the Neuquén Transition Range and
almost parallel to it in the northern part of the territory, the so called Wind Range is found,
with peaks above 4,500 meters. The Domuyo volcano is 4709 meters high and the highest of
the Province. Between these mountain ranges the Neuquén river begins, which gives its name
to the province and in the Mapuche language means vehement, impetuous, audacious.
Towards the east, there is a drop in the relative altitude and the lowest points are located in
the eastern corner of the confluence between Neuquén and Limay rivers - and the low part of
Añelo. Finally, the landscape changes in the area of plateaus, staggering in terraces down to
the sea, framing small plains or desert plains.

La existencia del oro y de otros minerales surgió de la expedición
de búsqueda encarada por el fundador de Chos Malal, Manuel
José Olascoaga, que dio como resultado la existencia de oro
lavando las arenas del río Neuquén. La mina de oro de los Jesuitas
es una leyenda que perdura en los viejos mineros quienes
aseguran que en las costas del Neuquén, entre el Colo y Cura
Mallín, los misioneros jesuitas por indicación de los pehuenches,
habían descubierto y explotaban una muy rica mina de oro. Al
producirse la expulsión de los jesuitas de toda América en 1767,
los misioneros derrumbaron y tapiaron la entrada a la mina, pero
habrían dejado a otros misioneros el secreto de su ubicación y se
habría seguido sacando oro de allí hasta que llegó el ejército
argentino a la región en 1879,…. hay quienes sostienen que
aunque la entrada fue tapiada por un derrumbe, cerca del Cajón
de los Guañacos hay una angosta y profunda grieta que lleva hasta
el corazón de la mina y que el único que la encontró fue el
norteamericano Corydon Hall -yerno de Olascoaga- en 1892 y que
fuera asesinado por bandoleros chilenos en 1902 en su casa de La
Primavera robándole 12 kilos de oro.
The existence of gold and other minerals was the result of an
expedition undertaken by the founder of Chos Malal, Manuel José
Olascoaga, when gold was obtained by washing the Neuquén river
sands. The gold mine of the Jesuits is a legend that lingers on old
miners who claim that on the shores of Neuquén river, between
Colo and Cura Mallin, Jesuit missionaries, with the pehuenches
knowledge, had discovered and exploited a rich mine gold. After
the expulsion of the Jesuits from the Americas in 1767, missionaries
fled and sealed up the entrance of the mine, but the secret of its
location was passed on and kept people taking gold from there
until the Argentinian army arrived to the region in 1879 ... . Some
argue that although the entrance was sealed by a landslide, near
the Guanacos passage there is a narrow and deep crevice that
leads to the heart of the mine. The only one who could find it was
the American Corydon Hall – Olascoaga’s son-in-law - in 1892.
Unfortunately, he was killed by Chilean bandits in 1902 at his home
in La Primavera and was stolen 12 kilos of gold.
Los yacimientos minerales metalíferos que constituyen
depósitos de interés en la PROVINCIA, sea por el nivel de
reservas conocidas como por sus actuales valores en el
contexto mundial, corresponden a los siguientes elementos:
oro, plata, cobre y uranio.
Por otro lado, los de uso industrial son: Potasio, carbón,
caliza, yeso, baritina, celestina, arcillas rojas y bentonitas. En
esta categoría se desarrollan mezclas reconocidas como
agrominerales, utilizados para enmiendas y correctores de
suelos, sometidos a intensa actividad agraria.
Metalliferous mineral deposits of major importance in the
province, either by their known reserves level as their current
values ​in the global context, are the following: gold, silver,
copper and uranium.
Furthermore, minerals with industrial uses are: Potassium,
coal, limestone, gypsum, barite, celestite, red clay and
bentonite. This category contains minerals recognized as
agro-mineral mixtures developed to be used as natural
fertilizers in areas subject to intense agricultural activity.
Minerales: Libre o asociado a pirita, en tres tipos
de vetas: cuarzo aurífero, pirita aurífera y menas
constituidas por galena, blenda y pirita.
Yacimientos: ubicados en el norte de Neuquén,
con áreas de interés que se encuentran además en
la zona centro - oeste.

centro oeste, centro y centro este de la provincia.
Reservas: Total Cu contenido: 194.300 toneladas.
