Continuing Conversion—Growing in Faith for Adults
We will not have class May 15. We are continuing our book for the
Year of Mercy. It is Pope Francis' book The Joy of the Gospel. "The
joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus.
Those who accept his offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneliness. With Christ joy is constantly
born anew." The book is available in class. We will read and discuss
from the book each week. We hope you will consider joining us for
this class which meets on Sunday at 9:45am in the conference room.
We would love to have everyone stay and bring their donuts. All are
welcome. Nothing is required but an open heart. Come and join us
for a chance to increase your faith and renew your spirit and follow
Jesus. For more information, contact me,
Bonnie Kaplan at 770 460 9816 or email at [email protected].
God bless you all.
Women's Faith Formation—Women's Faith Formation
meets on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at the church from
7pm to 8pm exactly. It is open to all women of the parish. For information please call Sally Peters at 770-486-7374.
RCIA— If you've been coming to Mass for a while, but are not
Catholic, we invite you to look deeper into the Catholic faith. Come
meet some faithful Catholics who love the Lord and would consider
it a privilege to get to know you. Our parish will soon begin a set of
sessions to share with others the truths of the Catholics faith and the
fellowship of our Church family. We invite you to learn what Catholics believe in an open and welcoming environment. These sessions
also are opportunities for you to ask those perplexing and difficult
questions you may have about the Church. Sessions are always held
on Sundays following the 11:00 a.m. Mass. Feel free to come any
Sunday. Please contact us via email @ [email protected],
call 770.964.5804 if you have questions or would like further information; or visit our website: www.saintmatthew.us.

Summer Lunch Program starting soon!
St. Matthew will again partner with St. Gabriel Catholic Church
and Holy Trinity Catholic Church to provide a healthy sack
lunch to the children of Suburban Woods in Union City each
and every weekday of the summer. This ministry is only successful because so many people give of their time, talent, treasure and prayers to make it happen. As in years past, St. Matthew will provide the Wednesday lunch. We anticipate serving
anywhere from 175 to 225 lunches each week of the summer. We'll immediately begin collecting donations of water
bottles (16 oz), 100% juice boxes, individual bags of chips and
financial donations to purchase the meat, cheese, and fruit.
Donations can be dropped off in the narthex beginning 14
May and continuing throughout the summer (financial donations can always be dropped in the offertory basket each weekend - please ensure the envelope is marked "SLP."). We also
invite parishioners to sign up to bake homemade cookies. In
addition, we invite families or individuals to sponsor our bread
purchase each week. If you'd like to help with set-up on Tuesday evenings or sandwich and lunch making or delivery on
Wednesday mornings, please sign up in the narthex beginning
the weekend of 14/15 May. We will hold sign ups for a few
weeks at a time, giving everyone a chance to participate. This
is a wonderful ministry for families and couples - for teens to
complete some service hours for school/scouts - for friends/
neighbors to do together. Contact Lisa Lowther 678.266.8373
or [email protected] with questions or stop by the SLP
table in the narthex.

No tenemos mucho talento o mucho tiempo,
no tiene oportunidad de multiplicarse y dar fruto;
y no es que unas veces ocurra y otras no, al azar;

Stewardship Reflection
Discussion Questions
The more popular name for today’s Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood
of Christ is Corpus Christi, which of course in Latin means the “Body of Christ.”
The Church has celebrated this feast at this time since it was proclaimed by Pope
Urban IV in 1264.
We are asked on this day to concentrate on two expressions of the Body of Christ
— the Holy Eucharist and the Church itself. The Catechism of the Catholic
Church (#1327) states the importance of the Eucharist quite succinctly and directly:
“In brief, the Eucharist is the sum and summary of our faith.” At the center of
every Mass is our celebration of the Eucharist. The word “Eucharist” comes from
the Greek word eucharistia which means “thanksgiving.” It is through the Eucharist
which we receive the Lord’s greatest gift to us, and it should be in thanksgiving
and delight which we receive it.
This holy day should also remind us of all those things for which we should be
thankful. Gratitude is at the basis of a life of stewardship. It is through thanksgiving for all we have received, especially the Holy Body and Blood of Christ through
the Eucharist, that we find the motivation and the commitment to be good stewards.
The Pontiff Emeritus Benedict XVI in one of his writings spoke of the Eucharist
in this way: “In the Eucharist a communion takes place that corresponds to the
union of man and woman in marriage. Just as they become ‘one flesh,’ so in the
Eucharist we all become ‘one spirit,’ one person with Christ.” Today we thank
God for the incredible gift to us of the Eucharist..
1. In what ways does Melchizedek prefigure Jesus?
2. Discuss the properties of bread and wine and
their benefits to the body when consumed. Why
do you think Melchizedek chose them for offerings? Why did Jesus chose them, do you think?

Jubilee Pilgrimage
This summer I will take up Pope Francis’ call to make pilgrimage during this
Jubilee Year of Mercy. As a way to thank God for His many mercies, I am
going to make pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Since the
Middle Ages, pilgrims have walked to the tomb of the Apostle St. James,
which is located in the cathedral church in Compostela. Since I went there
two years ago, I knew I would one day return when the Holy Doors were
open. I thought it would be ten years from now….but a Jubilee Year came
sooner! I would ask that you keep me in your prayers as I make my pilgrim
walk in June. If there are any intentions that I can pray for you as I walk and
any intentions I can bring to the Apostle James, please include them in the
prayer journal on the back table of the church. May the Lord continue to fill
us with his grace and blessings.
Fr. Kevin
Pilgrim’s Prayer
St. James, Apostle
chosen among the first,
You were the first to drink the Cup of the Master
And you are the great protector of pilgrims;
Make us strong in faith
and happy in hope on our pilgrim journey
following the path of Christian life
and sustain us so that
we may finally reach the glory of God the Father.
Amen
First Reading
Genesis 14:18-20
Second Reading
1 Corinthians 11:23-26
1. What do we believe Jesus meant when he said,
“Do this in remembrance of me”? To what does
“this” refer? Could it mean more than one thing?
2. Explain “For as often as you eat this bread and
drink this cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord
until he comes.” Is the gift of Jesus’ life, death,
and resurrection a one-time thing that happened
in the past, or is his gift on-going and always
newly present?
Gospel
Luke 9:11b-17
1. The crowd had been listening all day, spellbound by Jesus’ words in a deserted area, away
from villages. How would the disciples have taken
care of so many hungry people? How did Jesus?
2. According to what Pope Francis says below,
what is it that matters: the extent of our gift, or
our sharing of it? If the latter, what happens to
our gifts when we share them?
In the face of the crowd’s needs, this is the disciples’ solution: Everyone takes care of himself;
dismiss the crowd. Many times we Christians have
that same temptation; we don’t take on the needs
of others, but dismiss them with a compassionate
“May God help you” or a not-so-compassionate
“Good luck.”
What Jesus encouraged the disciples to do was an
act of “solidarity,” … placing at God’s disposal
what little we have, our humble abilities, because
only in sharing and in giving will our lives be fruitful. …
At the same time, in receiving the Eucharist faithfully the Lord leads us to follow his path—that of
service, sharing and giving; and that little that we
have, the little that we are, if shared, becomes a
treasure because the power of God, who is love,
descends to our poverty and transforms it.
