Preterite Stem Change Verbs
In Spanish, there are many “stem change verbs”. In the present tense, some verbs that
end in ar, -er, and -ir change their stems. They might change stems o-ue, e-i, or e-ie:
Verb: encontrar (changes o-___ in the present tense)
Mi hermano y yo encontramos un gato...y ¡el gato encuentra
un ratón!
Verb: repetir (changes e-___ in the present tense)
La profesora repite, «¡Siéntense!». Nosotros repetimos, «¡No!»
Verb: querer (changes e-___ in the present tense)
Mi madre quiere ensalada, pero nosotros queremos pizza.
You might remember that verbs that change stems in the present tense only change in
some forms: they do not change in the _________________ and ________________ forms.
