As part of our Parish celebration of the Jubilee
Year of Mercy, we will have Exposition of the
Blessed Sacrament and an extended period of
Eucharistic Adoration. Exposition will occur
following the 5:00 PM Mass on Saturday, May
14th with continual Adoration until 7:45 AM
Pentecost Sunday, May 15th. The Blessed
Sacrament will be reposed for Sunday Masses,
and exposed again following the 11:00 AM
Mass. The celebration will conclude with our
regular Monthly Divine Mercy liturgy at 3:00 PM
followed by Benediction.
As the Blessed Sacrament must be attended at
all times during Exposition, we are asking parishioners to sign up for a specific time slot. A sign
up sheet is currently available in the rear of the
Church. We encourage ministry groups in the
Parish to gather as one to pray together for
God's mercy.

thing I know: the only ones among you who will
be truly happy are those who have sought and
found how to serve.”

Reading I : Acts 15:1-2, 22-29
The Spirit does not burden you.
• In the reading from Acts, Paul describes a solution to
the controversy regarding requirements of the Jewish
law.
• Christians at the time were convinced that converts
to Christianity must keep the prescriptions of the
Jewish law.
• The early Church worked to solve these controversies
through the wisdom of God in the Spirit.
Please welcome those being
baptized this weekend into
our parish family:
Reading II : Revelation 21:10-14, 22-23
The glory of God is with you.
• The reading from Revelation continues to describe a
vision of the New Jerusalem.
• The City was surrounded by the number twelve, the
number for the fullness of Israel (twelve tribes) and
the number for the fullness of the Church (twelve
apostles).
• The sign of God’s presence in the Temple was no
longer necessary because now God dwells in the
midst of the community.

Gospel : John 14:23-29
The Spirit will instruct you in everything.
• The Gospel passage is Jesus’ promise of the presence
of the Holy Spirit with the disciples.
• Jesus will dwell forever with those who love him and
are true to him.
• This presence of God in the believer and in the community of believers bears much fruit.

MAY 1ST ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST AND ST. AGNES
Weekly Reflection
Saint of the Week
May 1, 2016
Sixth Sunday of Easter
Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
Achilleus and Nereus, Martyrs,
c. First Century
There is a bittersweet taste to most dark chocolate. Medical experts tell us that it is a small price to pay for enjoying
its benefits as opposed to the sweeter taste of milk chocolate. Perhaps there is a piece or two of dark chocolate still
in your Easter basket.
As with many of the early martyrs, little is known with certainty about these two saints and many of the accounts are
conflicting. What is not disputed is the site of their graves,
the catacomb of Domitilla in Rome. But, with that as a
starting point, we can surmise the most likely history of
their martyrdom.
I was thinking of bittersweet chocolate as an analogy with
the departure of Jesus from the scene which He speaks of
in today’s gospel. He is speaking with His chosen men
with a tender love that urges Him to warn them a about
His pending departure.
St. John does not tell us anything about the Apostles’ inner
feelings as they listen to Jesus, but surely we can imagine
the sadness that all of us feel about goodbyes. Jesus softens the announcement with His promise to send the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit. Through the Spirit, Jesus will remain with them. He will “teach” and “remind” the Apostles of all that Jesus said and did.
Besides the consolation that the divine presence always
brings, there is a special gift that the Paraclete offers. There is His own divinity, of course. But there is
also that human connection He makes through the inspiration of the Holy Scripture and the preservation of Tradition, the two fonts of Catholic teaching.
At one time during Our Lord’s ministry, some anonymous
Greeks told the Apostle Philip “we want to see Jesus.” Who doesn’t? From time to time, we all have a moment or two in which we picture our meeting with Him.
How will it go? How will we feel?
Meanwhile, in the reality of our day to day living, with its
mixture of expected routine and unexpected surprises, we
are asked by the Holy Spirit to see Jesus in our sisters and
brothers. Sometimes that’s not easy, but it is always a
wise decision and a rewarding vision even if it’s often bittersweet. Perhaps such thoughts prompted the anonymous
poet to say:
“ I sought my soul—
but my soul I could not see.
I sought my God—
but my God eluded me.
I sought my brother—
and I found all three.”
Persecution of Christians occurred over much of the first
three centuries of the Church; however none of the early
harassment matched that which began with the ascension of
Trajan to Emperor in 98 A.D. An elite unit assigned to the
emperor was charged with hunting down Christians and
killing those who would not apostatize. Achilleus and
Nereus were members of this unit.
While it is not known how long Achilleus and Nereus participated in this persecution, it is believed that, witnessing
the strong faith of those who suffered martyrdom at their
hands, these two were converted to Christianity and resigned their commissions. As had their victims, Achilleus
and Nereus refused to offer sacrifices to the pagan gods
which would have spared their lives. For this, they were
beheaded in about 100 A.D. Their bodies were recovered
and placed in the catacomb of Domitilla where many of
their victims had been buried.
Pope Damasus (366-384 A.D.) was extremely interested in
the history and tombs of the martyrs of the early Church
and had an epitaph inscribed near the tombs of these two
soldiers which praised these two praetorian soldiers who
volunteered for military service and were carrying on their
“cruel” duty, but suddenly laid aside their madness, “cast
down shields, helmets, and bloodstained weapons,” were
converted, and “bear with the triumph of Christ, they were
put to death with the sword.”
An optional memorial honors these two martyrs on May 12.
Achilleus and Nereus’ message today: While it is never
easy to stand up for what is right in the face of strong
opposition, and few of us would face death for our position,
we must not back down when we know that our view is
correct.
How are you at standing up against hostility when you
know that you are right?
