To assist St. Augustine in administering to the sick we are asking your
cooperation when submitting names for the Prayers of the Faithful and
names to be added to the bulletin listing of the sick. The office staff
will be requesting some details that will help determine the need for a
clerical visit or assistance through a Eucharistic Minister for the
homebound. The bulletin listing of the sick will be grouped bi-weekly
so that we all can be aware of those newly added to the listing. The
bulletin will maintain the listings for three months unless otherwise
specified to be listed indefinitely. After three months names can be
added once again if not otherwise listed as indefinite. Thank you for
your assistance and cooperation.
Pastoral/prayer cards may be found in the Sacristy and the Commons
Congratulations
Congratulations to Logan Phillip Taylor and his family
for receiving First Eucharist this past weekend. May this
be the first of many in their lifetime. May we be bread and
peace for one another and for the world.

ENCOUNTER THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL
Year Two: Focus on the Domestic Church –
Marriage & Family
REFLECTION
5th Sunday of Easter
"This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love
for one another." When people watch us, do they know that we are the
disciples of Jesus?
As Christians, we are called to do more than love the Lord. We are
called to be his witnesses in the world by loving others as well. In today's Gospel reading, he gave us a new commandment, "As I have loved
you, so you also should love one another." Anyone, everyone, should be
able to look at us and see this love in action. If we are not witnesses to
this love, then we are falling short of our mission.
So, how did Jesus love us? Selflessly. His love was never motivated
by personal gain. On the contrary, he often suffered for us, and not just
on the cross. He faced rejection and animosity for loving those who
were considered "unlovable" in his culture. He lived a life of poverty
and simplicity, never focused on amassing things for himself, but always willing to give of himself. This is the love we are called to imitate.
The task can feel daunting. We are not perfect people, and being
witnesses to Christ-like love can strike us as a lofty challenge. Of
course, it's easier to be selfless and generous with people who love us in
return, or with those who stir our compassion. But to be consistent witnesses to loving one another in all circumstances--like Jesus does for us-that takes it to another level. Thankfully, however, Jesus doesn't expect
us to do this on our own. He promises us his Spirit to live in us and love
through us. Through our baptism, we have his Spirit dwelling in our
hearts, along with the supernatural gifts of faith, hope, and love. May we
make these gifts flourish.

Deacon Corner: (By Deacon Al)
On May 3 the Bishop will be at St. Augustine for the Sacrament of Confirmation. It is good to know a little history of this sacrament and the
transition from the early church with the three Sacraments of Initiation.
The Spirit is present in the Church, moving and breathing where he
wills, but allowing historical events and cultures to shape our practice
and understanding of the faith. A striking example of this is the history
and the theology of the Sacrament of Confirmation. Through the centuries the way we have celebrated the sacrament and understood its meaning has undergone many changes. It is almost universally accepted as a
celebration of the Spirit within us and a time for affirming our Baptism.
Yet different schools of thought exist concerning its meaning, its purpose, and the age at which it is to be celebrated. In the early Church the
three Sacraments of initiation—Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist—
were celebrated in the same ceremony by adult catechumens at the Easter Vigil. The separation of the bishop's anointing from Baptism occurred
for a number of reasons in the Western Church. Constantine's proclamation making Christianity the state religion in the fourth century meant
that many more people were being baptized. Christianity also spread
from the cities into the countryside. It became impossible for bishops,
who were now also involved in governing, to preside at every Baptism.
The bishops of the East solved the problem by delegating the Sacraments of Initiation to the presbyter, reserving for themselves only the
blessing of the oil used in the rite. To this day the Eastern churches initiate with all three sacraments at once. The bishops of the West also delegated Baptism to priests, but retained the function of performing the
initial anointing and laying on of hands. This they would do whenever
they visited a particular locality. Thus, in the West the celebration of the
Sacrament of Confirmation was done at a later time than the celebration
of the Sacrament of Baptism.
CHRISTIAN FORMATION
Year of Mercy: Forgiveness is a decision not a feeling.
Adult After L.I.F.E.
During our April time together, the participants in Adult L.I.F.E. immersed themselves in considering the impact and implications of the Jubilee Year of Mercy! Looking at this from different perspectives gave everyone a chance to see Pope Francis’ intent and hopes for a whole world so
very in need of justice and mercy. We were challenged to change (even
in small, everyday, merciful ways) ourselves, our families, our communities, and, our world. As we begin to “notice” the needs of others for mercy, we are called to respond, to “be noticed” for the signs that we are
Christ’s forgiving presence to others! May this be our prayer in this
“holy”, Holy Year!!
Join us all next month on May 1st (first Sunday of the month, this
time), for our annual “Anniversary” celebration with cake, trivia fun,
prizes, and more “adult” faith conversation. Can it be possible that
this tradition was begun 9 years ago?!
EveryWoman The Everywoman book group meets on the 2nd and 4th

EDGE/LIFETEEN
This week at Edge/LIFETEEN, we discussed the sacraments and angels
as our spiritual protection against evil. Our teens were challenged to
reflect on how well they are fortifying their faith with the sacraments,
especially the Eucharist and Reconciliation, as well as prayer. They
learned about angels as our protectors, particular St. Michael. At the end
of the session, we renewed our Baptismal Promises and gave each teen a
prayer card with the St. Michael prayer on it. Our next EDGE/
LIFETEEN session will be held on Monday, April 25th. Topic: The
Battlefield: Forming a Battle Plan for Spiritual Warfare.

REFLEXIONES
actividades pastorales. ¡Que así sea!
