To assist St. Augustine in administering to the sick we are asking your cooperation when submitting names for the Prayers of the Faithful and names to be added to the bulletin listing of the sick. The office staff will be requesting some details that will help determine the need for a clerical visit or assistance through a Eucharistic Minister for the homebound. The bulletin listing of the sick will be grouped bi-weekly so that we all can be aware of those newly added to the listing. The bulletin will maintain the listings for three months unless otherwise specified to be listed indefinitely. After three months names can be added once again if not otherwise listed as indefinite. Thank you for your assistance and cooperation. Pastoral/prayer cards may be found in the Sacristy and the Commons Congratulations Congratulations to Vanessa Genova and her family for recently being baptized in the Lord at St. Augustine Church. May the “Light” of Christ live in her heart and she live as a child of God! Congratulations to Mary Nicole Fens, Samantha Elise Fens and Nathaniel Brian Rieser and their families for receiving First Eucharist this past weekend. May this be the first of many in their lifetime. May we be bread and peace for one another and for the world. THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER WORSHIP Preparing for the Sunday readings Go to liturgy.slu.edu CHRISTIAN FORMATION Year of Mercy: Forgiveness is a decision not a feeling. Adult After L.I.F.E. ENCOUNTER THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL Year Two: Focus on the Domestic Church – Marriage & Family We are so very grateful for the time and knowledge shared by Monsignor Francis Muench, Judicial Vicar for the Diocese, during our March Adult L.I.F.E. session. This continued naturally from his session last month on marriage. REFLECTION The “Annulment” topic was approached through the understanding of the general judicial process, the teachings from Canon Law and their implications, and the questions that arose from those in attendance. Expertise and compassion surrounding an often difficult…and certainly often complex subject...such an invaluable combination! 3rd Sunday of Easter "Jesus said to him the third time, 'Simon, son of John, do you love me?'" Three times, Simon Peter had denied Jesus. Now, three times, the risen Christ gives Peter the opportunity to announce his love. Although Peter was "distressed" by the Lord's repeated question, ultimately this must have been a healing moment in Peter's life. He finally had the opportunity to assure Jesus that he loved him, thereby making up for his earlier failure and weakness on the night of the Crucifixion. Jesus' death on the cross sufficed to forgive us of our sins. But his resurrection assures us that there is new life on the other side of our sinfulness. Just as Jesus had the power to conquer death, so too through his grace we have the power to conquer our sins. We can live a resurrected life, we can have a new beginning, just as Peter did that day at the Sea of Tiberias when he pledged his faith anew. This pledge of faith, it's interesting to note, also came with a kind of commission. Each time that Peter told the Lord he loved him, Jesus responded with a command: "Feed my lambs," "Tend my sheep," and "Feed my sheep." Of course, we know that Jesus had already established Peter as the "rock" on which he built his church, as the first pope. Now, Jesus was emphasizing the connection between loving him--the Good Shepherd--and loving his people, his flock, his church. Peter's love for Christ was meant to be manifested in his love and care for the church, as is the case with every pope. But it's also true for every Christian. We are called not just to relish the gift of forgiveness and the grace of new life in Christ, but to take the next step of loving and serving those around us. ©Liturgical Publications Inc. Deacon Corner: (By Deacon Al) During the time of Christ the fish and the fisheries of the Sea of Galilee had a world-wide reputation. The choicest kinds abounded in this lake, and some varieties existed here similar to those found in the Nile. Tarichæa was noted for its extensive “fish-factories,” and from the business of fishing more than one of the towns upon the shore are said to have derived their names. People came from all over the area, even from Jerusalem, especially just before the great feasts, to fish in these waters. Fishing provide means of support for the multitudes that, on those occasions, flocked to the Temple. The Jews distinguished sharply between clean and unclean fish, which custom may be referred to in the words of our Lord, “They gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away." The fisherman of the Sea of Galilee represented the highest class of men living on the lake. They were sincere and of upright character. They lived much in their boats rowing the fishing boats made them vigorous and healthy looking. The ancient fishermen were not learned men, but they were earnest, robust, fair-minded and holy. They learned about angels as our protectors, particular St. Michael. At the end of the session, we renewed our Baptismal Promises and gave each teen a prayer card with the St. Michael prayer on it. NEW LIGHTING We hope you have noticed the change in the lighting in the church. We have replaced the old fixtures which were needing to be serviced more and more frequently with new fixtures and LED lighting. This new lighting is not only brighter but will reduce our energy cost by at least 75%. Also this new lighting should not have to be serviced for a number of years. The cost of this change is not insignificant in that the cost is $8,800. We did bid this work and by doing so we were able to reduce the cost by $2,500. With the reduced energy cost and not having to expend approximately $800 each time we serviced the lights we hope to recover this cost in a reasonable time. We are grateful to the Women’s Guild for their support in helping to cover some of the cost. They had $2,920.93 that had been raised in prior years that was being held for special needs. They generously agreed to use these funds for the new lighting. We thank them for their support and for all that they do for our parish. If you would like offer your support for this please make your contribution and mark it lighting. "Vengan a almorzar" (Jn 21, 12). ©Liturgical Publications Inc.
