t was a Major win.

many places won a common demand,” said

The fast food worker and activist with the
“Fight for $15” campaign exulted in a rally
held this past Mon., Apr. 4th at the Jacob K.
Javits Center.
Governor Andrew

signed
legislation on Monday enacting a statewide
$15 minimum wage and 12-week paid family
leave policy.
The legislation was passed as part of the
state’s 2016-17 state budget, approved on
April 1.
Flanked by State Assembly Speaker Carl
Heastie, Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul,
and State Senators Jeff Klein and Andrea
Stewart-Cousins, Cuomo officially signed
both pieces of legislation prior to the rally.
The rally drew about 1,000 people and was
highlighted by an appearance by Democratic
presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
At the event, Cuomo and Clinton were
joined onstage by Major, Heastie, Klein and
Stewart-Cousins, as well as George Gresham,
President of health care and home care union
SEIU 1199; Mary Kay Henry, International
President of Service Employees International
Union (SEIU); Hector Figueroa, President
of union 32BJ SEIU, and Mario Cilento,
President of the New York State AFLCIO.

union members in the room.
“It is the labor movement that built the
nation’s middle class in the first place, and
we’re rebuilding the middle class for a new
economy today,” he stated.

“W
e are working hard
for you,” declared the
Cardinal.
Cardinal Timothy Michael Dolan spoke on
Thurs., Mar. 31st to farmworkers, community
organizers, and members of the clergy in
Sullivan County.
Located about 70 miles outside of New
York City, the Catskill Mountains county is
home to 74,000 residents. In 1969, it served
as the site of the Woodstock Festival, during
which thousands of music-lovers flocked
upstate over three days to embrace an ethos
of love and care.
While Thursday’s gathering was decidedly
smaller than the epic concert, it seemed to
generate no less a fraternal spirit as Dolan,
who was joined by Catholic Charities’
Executive Director Monsignor Kevin Sullivan
and other members of the organization,
spoke emphatically of their backing of the
Farmworkers Fair Labor Practices Act.
“I definitely support the law,” said Dolan.
“These are issues of respect and dignity
towards one another.”
“We are here in support of the rights of
these workers,” added Sullivan.
The bill looks to address issues such as
worker protections, overtime pay, public

health protection and employer contributions
to workers’ compensation and unemployment
funds and would afford greater rights for over
100,000 migrant farm workers throughout
New York State, which boasts a powerful
agricultural industry.
In 2012, it was estimated that the total
value of agricultural products in the state was
nearly $6 billion, which included harvested
crops such as Long Island grapes and Hudson
Valley apples.
Advocates explained that the workers are
largely male migrants who leave behind their
families and travel from Mexico, Guatemala
and other Central American countries for
seasonal employment in the fields. They are
often subject to unfair labor practices which
include insufficient pay and excessive work
schedules.
“Too many workers are working long
hours,” said Kevin Fernández, a member of
the Farmworkers Community Center. “The
farmworkers, who come with or without visas,
some undocumented as well, have come to
work and make wages that few people in New
York would work for.”
Some workers are up as early as 4 a.m.
during the summer and will work until the
evening with no breaks save for an occasional
short lunch, he said.
“On top of that, they’re traveling to different
areas for hours for work each week,” he
added. “These workers are making a minimal
amount of money for the work they’re doing.”

upstate setting has uptown ties.
The bill is sponsored by Senator Adriano
Espaillat in the Senate, and is supported by a
host of legislators from Northern Manhattan
and the Bronx, including Sens. Gustavo
Rivera and Rubén Díaz, Sr. They are part
of a group of 28 Democratic sponsors in the
Senate who have signed on, as are also five
Republican Senators who sit in the body’s
Labor Committee.

for feeding all of us. The least we can do
is make sure they are treated in a humane
way,” argued Espaillat in a statement. “This

The Democratic-led Assembly has backed
the bill and Governor Andrew Cuomo has
pledged to sign it should it reach his desk.
Other supporters include the Hispanic
Federation, the AFL-CIO, NYCLU, and
Rural and Migrant Ministries.
But in the Senate, where the Republican
Senators are in the majority, the bill has
faltered – despite the vocal and visible
advocacy of backers such as Dolan, who has

T
hey’re stepping it up.
In February 2015, the New York City
Department of Education (DOE) was found
to be in violation of Title IX, the federal
law that guarantees equal opportunities for
educational programs or activities.
Following a complaint by the National
Women’s Law Center, it was determined
that the DOE was not providing enough
opportunities for girls to play sports in public
schools.
Since then, the DOE has been adding more
high school teams for females.
Asphalt Green, a nonprofit that helps
over 33,000 public school children a year
become more physically fit, recognized the
importance of getting middle school girls
involved in team sports to better prepare them
for high school.
“It’s widely knows that middle school girls
tend to drop out of high school sports,” said
Beth Rotenberg, Sports League Manager for
Asphalt Green. At age 14, the sports drop-out
rate is six times higher for girls than boys,
Rotenberg said.
“As boys are ramping up with sports, girls
are dropping out, largely due to the lack of
opportunities,” she added.
Asphalt Green partners with New York
City public schools through its Community
Sports League (CSL), which provide students
with the chance to play in basketball, soccer
and flag football leagues.
“We tend to work with schools in lowincome neighborhoods, where there is greater
poverty and people tend to have more health
issues,” Rotenberg said.
Launched in 2009, the CSL
now operates at 19 public schools,
many in the Bronx and Northern
Manhattan, serving more than 700
middle school students.
The group’s “girls only”
basketball and soccer leagues
are designed to get females more
interested in sports.
Asphalt Green provides free
uniforms and referees for games,
as well as instructional clinics,
team trophies and an award
celebration.

Nueva York (DOE por sus siglas en inglés)
estaba violando el Título IX, la ley federal que
garantiza la igualdad de oportunidades para los
programas o actividades educativas.
A raíz de una denuncia del Centro Nacional de
los Derechos de las Mujeres, se determinó que el
DOE no proporcionaba suficientes oportunidades
para que las niñas practicaran deportes en las
escuelas públicas. Desde entonces, el DOE ha
estado agregando más equipos para mujeres de
preparatoria.
Asphalt Green, una organización no lucrativa
que ayuda anualmente a más de 33,000 niños
de escuelas públicas a tener una mejor condición
física, reconoció la importancia de lograr que
las chicas de secundaria participen en deportes
de equipo para entrenarlas mejor para la
preparatoria.
“Es ampliamente sabido que las chicas de
secundaria tienden a abandonar los deportes en
la preparatoria”, dijo Beth Rotenberg, gerente de
ligas deportivas de Asphalt Green. A los 14 años,
la tasa de abandono de los deportes es seis
veces mayor para las niñas que para los niños,
dijo Rotenberg.
“Mientras los niños redoblan los deportes, las
niñas los abandonan en gran parte debido a la

says winner Gregory Vélez.

I
t took just two dollars - a
moment of boredom - to forever
upend Gregory Vélez’s life.
Former parking attendant Vélez played
New York Lottery’s Cash4Life draw game on
February 25 and won the $7 million top prize.
Vélez had been working through a
slow night at the garage he worked
at in Battery Park City, when he
decided to walk to the newsstand
across the street and ask the
clerk what lottery games were
happening that evening.
“He said ‘Cash4Life’ and I
said, ‘Alright, just give me $2,”
Vélez recalled.
He put the ticket in his wallet and
forgot all about it until the next morning,
when he returned to work and his co-workers
informed him that the winning ticket had been
sold at the Southend News store he’d just
patronized.
“I walked across the street to verify it,”
said Vélez. “The clerk jumped up and said,
‘You’re the winner.’”
Since no other winning numbers were
drawn, Vélez won the full $7 million pot.
After walking around “in a daze for about
an hour,” Vélez returned to the garage, where
he did what many in his position might think
to do — he retired on the spot.
It was the first time Vélez had
ever played the Cash4Life game.
“The manager looked at me and
smiled, and said ‘I guess you’re
done working?’ and I said ‘Yes, I’m
done working.”
The 58-year-old Vélez said it was the
first time he had ever bought a ticket for the
Cash4Life game, one the of the lottery’s
jackpot games.
He elected to receive his winnings as a lump
sum payment — after taxes, he will pocket
more than $4.6 million.
On Wed., Mar. 30th, New York Lottery
representative Yolanda Vega introduced Vélez
to the media and presented him with a giant
check. Vélez held an oversized replica of his
winning ticket.
His lucky numbers were 2, 16, 19, 33 and
30 with a Cash Ball selection of 3.

The New York lottery is considered North
America’s largest and most profitable lottery.
It contributed over $1.2 billion dollars
through its education aid initiatives to school
districts throughout the five boroughs during
fiscal year 2014-2015.
The soft-spoken Vélez insisted that he had
no grandiose plans for his newfound fortune,
but would definitely go to Walt Disney World
first.
“I’ll be taking care of all my bills, and
making sure my kids are fine, and my
granddaughter’s fine,” he remarked. “And
life will be good.”
Vega asked him, “Are you sure you’re not
going back to work?”
“Oh, I’m positive,” Vélez replied with a
laugh.
The divorced father of two, who has lived
in New Jersey, is grateful to no longer make
the daily commute into Manhattan, where he
worked for 36 years.
Vega said it was common for first-time
or infrequent participants in the New York
Lottery to become winners.
“You see the people who play religiously,
and we never see them actually win,” remarked
Vega. “But the people who buy one $2 ticket,
or get their numbers in a fortune cookie, seem
to be the people that win. Sometimes the first
time’s the charm.”
The odds of a single $2 ticket matching five
winning numbers and the Cash Ball are more
than 21 million to one.
“It’s the best $2 that I ever spent,” stated
Vélez.

The 2015 class of Empire Fellows.

T
he Empire is calling.
The next wave of New York State policymakers is being sought to serve in Albany,
and a unique fellowship is reaching into a host
of industries to recruit them.
The Empire State Fellows Program, now in
its fifth year, is a full-time leadership training
program designed to attract professionals
from a variety of fields who wish to refocus
their careers on public service.
“There are many individuals who have
an interest in going into public service but
don’t know how to go about it,” said Jorge
Montalvo, Deputy Secretary of State for
Economic Opportunity. “They might feel
that they need to be politically connected
somehow. But the fellowship gives them a
pathway, no matter what career they were in
previously, to work at the highest levels of
state government.”
Empire Fellows are selected from a host of
professions — the four previous fellowship
classes have included a music industry
employee, antitrust lawyer, data researcher
and urban planning professional.
Montalvo, who oversees the program,
said the diversity of applicants reflects of
the needs of New York’s state government.
“It’s very collaborative and
interactive,” says Luana Ferreira.
“It creates a better richness in policy-making
when you have a diversity of backgrounds,”
he stated.
Applications are now being accepted for
the incoming class of Empire State Fellows,
who will serve from September 2016 to
September 2018.
In addition to a strong interest in public
service, Montalvo said that applicants should
have an advanced degree and at least three
years of professional work experience, as well
as the ability to work in Albany for two years.
The application deadline is April 22.
“The Fellows program has been an
effective way to recruit talented individuals
from a wide array of professional careers
and brings their skills and new ideas to
work for the people of New York State,”
noted Rossana Rosado, Acting New York
Secretary of State. “Previous Fellows have
included former assistant district attorneys,
U.S. Army veterans, business professionals,
and non-profit managers, showcasing the
range of talent these classes have usually
produced.”
Each Empire Fellow works at a state office
or agency, such as Rosado’s office within the
Department of State, Department of Labor,
Empire State Development Corporation, or in
the Governor’s Executive Chamber.
Governor Andrew Cuomo appoints each
fellow to work directly with a Commissioner,
Deputy Commissioner, or other high-level
policy maker.

hey said they had never seen
anything like it.
Over 18,500 residents from across New
York flocked to the South Bronx this past
Thurs., Mar. 31st to hear from Democratic
presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.
The rally was a spirited affair at St.
Mary’s Park for supporters of the 74-yearold Senator, who had lined up for hours to
hear from the self-described “democratic
socialist,” and chanted while dancing and
waving signs.
Among the speakers were Boricua Calle
13 artist and activist René Pérez; and
actress and advocate Rosario Dawson;
filmmaker Spike Lee. Also in attendance
were Assemblymember Luis Sepulveda and
Councilmember Ritchie Torres, who have
pledged their support to Sanders.
Pérez said the candidate had long been
focused on issues of concern to Puerto Rico.
“I support Bernie Sanders because he
has been the only candidate with logical
proposals and has expressed support for
my country’s debt relief,” asserted Pérez.
“He did not do this now, in the middle of
an election cycle, but he spoke out from the
moment the economic crisis began.”
Pérez also denounced what he said was
historical and adverse interference from the
United States in Puerto Rican affairs.
“Puerto Rico is a colony of the United
States,” he declared. “We are the oldest
colony in the world.”

President, noted Pérez, who also charged that
Puerto Rican residents on the island suffer
from higher rates of unemployment and
poverty than those who reside in the U.S.
Dawson challenged the notion that the
campaign’s major constituency was young
white males.
“That’s not true,” she insisted. “I think it’s
actually pretty amazing that [all supporters]
are cheering for justice and equality. That’s
something to celebrate. It’s a beautiful thing.”
Once at the microphone, a hoarse Sanders,
who first stood on a simple overturned
electrical cart and was accompanied by his
wife Jane Sanders, greeted the crowd by
reminding him of his local roots.
“As you know, I am the very proud senator
from Vermont,” he said. “But I am very proud
that I was born here, in New York City!”
No presidential candidate has visited the
Bronx since Robert F. Kennedy held a rally
on Fordham Road in 1960. Mott Haven,
the South Bronx neighborhood where the
Sanders held his rally, is among the most
impoverished regions in the nation. 2010
Census data reveals that the average median
income for 299 households in Mott Haven and
the surrounding area is $13,556. The federal
income poverty level is under $18,000 for a
family of three.
Chief among the causes for alarm
expressed by rally-goers in conversation
was displacement. They noted that rents
in Mott Haven are increasing and that the
neighborhood has been gradually becoming
more expensive.
“There is no reason why in this country
people should be paying 40-50% of their
limited incomes in housing,” said Sanders.
Others remarked on the fact that asthma
rates in the South Bronx are the highest in
the city, and some of the highest in the United
States.
Sanders said that his administration would
not neglect or overlook neighborhoods such
as Mott Haven.
“We are determined, that instead of
spending trillions of dollars on a war in Iraq
that we never should have gotten into, we
are going to reinvest in the South Bronx and
in communities all over this country,” he
declared, which was met with roars.
Sanders said his personal background gave
him common ground with many residnets in
attendance.

pedestrian plazas

K
eith Albahe knows he’s a
Joker, but he’s no menace.
Albahe spends his days as a costumed
character in Times Square, posing for photos
with tourists and visitors who seek, often for a
tip, to capture a photographic moment beside
the villain known for terrorizing the residents

But Albahe says he and his fellow characters
in the Square do no such thing.
“We don’t force ourselves on people,” he
argued. “If you don’t want any pictures, no
character is going to bother you.”
Albahe was joined by Spider-Man, Batman,
Penguin and others at a City Council hearing
on Wed., Mar. 30th at which City Hall briefly
resembled the set of a superhero movie. Many
offering testimony came in full costume,
lending a surreal quality to the proceedings.
The hearing had been called to address
proposed legislation that would restrict the
costumed characters to working in designated
zones within the plaza.
The bill, known as 1109-A, would give the
New York City Department of Transportation
(DOT) authority to create regulations for
all pedestrian plazas in the city, covering
conduct, litter and quality of life issues.
The agency would also be allowed to issue
event permits.
Under the proposed legislation, the
DOT would create distinct “Designated
Activity Zones” in Times Square ― tapedoff commercial areas where costumed
characters, entertainers, solicitors and
ticket sellers would be allowed to operate.
They would not be allowed to work in
pedestrian flow areas.

Rodríguez stressed that the legislation was
not an attack on costumed characters and others
at Times Square, most of whom are hardworking New Yorkers, he said.
“We will not be putting anyone out of
business, nor will we harshly limit the extent
of activity that many engage in to support
themselves or their families,” stated Rodríguez.
“However, we know that there are a number
of bad actors whose actions have prompted
concern for our residents and visitors.”
“We don’t force ourselves on
people,” said Keith Albahe, who
came dressed as his alter ego.
But Albahe said it was unfair that the
reputation of all costumed workers were
tarnished following a string of highly publicized
arrests of Times Square characters since 2014.
“You don’t target an entire group of people
because of the actions of a few,” Albahe
remarked.
While there are currently 53 pedestrian
plazas in New York City and another 20 in
planning or construction, the hearing focused
almost exclusively on Times Square – so far
the only plaza the DOT is proposing specific
rules for.

minimum wage will begin by the end of 2018
for large businesses, and by the end of 2019
for businesses with 10 employees or less.
The state’s new paid family leave plan,
the most comprehensive program of its type
in the nation, will provide employees with
up to 12 weeks of paid leave to care for an
infant, a family member with a serious health
condition or to relieve family pressures when
someone is called to active military service.
It will be phased in starting in 2018, and
funded by nominal paycheck deductions.
Workers are eligible to participate after having
worked for their employer for six months.
“No one should choose between seeing
their child born and earning a paycheck,” said
Cuomo.
The governor said he could sense a climate
of anger in the nation during the current
presidential election.
“People are angry,” Cuomo said. “Because
the truth is that in this economy, people have
been going backwards for decades.”
Though Cuomo was showered in cheers
throughout the rally, the crowd’s biggest
reaction was reserved for Clinton, whom
Cuomo introduced as “a woman of values and
vision” who can get things done.
“She’s also a person who can win this
election and make this country a better
country for all Americans,” Cuomo said.
Clinton called the new legislation a
watershed, and said it displayed “what is best
about New York and best about our country.”
Thanking Cuomo for his “principled
leadership,” Clinton also praised Heastie,

“government working at its best for people,
especially for minorities who have been
struggling for too long.”
He expressed hope that more U.S. states
would follow New York’s lead and increase
the minimum wage.
“People will see that lifting the minimum
wage does not hurt the economy; on the
contrary it does the opposite,” he said. “Once
people start seeing the proof in the pudding,
I think you’re going to see more and more
states doing this.”

Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan,
who represents Long Island, had previously
sponsored the bill, and there is hope he will
sign on again.
“Myself and brother bishops from the state
believe this enhances the dignity of workers
in the field,” explained Dolan.
The workers in attendance agreed that they
lacked basic rights afforded most others.
“We have no sick time or time off,” said
Cándido, a migrant from Mexico who
declined to give his last name.
“There is no [job] security either,” he
added. “At any moment, we could be let go
and have to travel to find new work.”
Dolan said the commitment to ensuring
workers are afforded greater rights was
driven by a moral imperative.
“It’s not politics to us,” said Dolan. “It’s
virtue, it’s the Gospel.”
Fernández agreed that the issue had
universal impact.
“There are bumper stickers throughout the
county that say, ‘If there are no farms, there
is no food,’” he observed. “[Well,] if there are
no farmworkers, there is no food.”
Stash Grajewski, Director of the
Farmworkers Community Center, said it
would require concerted efforts to raise
awareness, and insisted that the work
protections being debated for farmworkers
were ones presumed as standard employment
practice in other industries.
“When you work you have your break, you
have your lunch,” said Grajewski. “Here are
these workers who aren’t even given a single
sick day.”
“We’re calling on all New Yorkers to support
this legislation and support their farmworkers,”
he said.
Dolan said he would continue to engage
legislators – on both sides of the aisle – to move
on the legislation.
“All of these [issues] are important to us
because they were important to Jesus, important
to God,” he said. “So we have a sacred
responsibility.”

grade six through eight. Del Rosario said his
players go to study hall twice a week.
“You’re a student first and an athlete
second,” he remarked.
“It’s helped me to get better grades,” said
seventh-grader player Jasmine.
Rotenberg said that establishing a student/
athlete balance is one of the goals of the CSL.
“We’re trying to prepare them for the reality
of high school sports – doing your homework,
getting good grades,” stated Rotenberg.
This season, the P.S. 161 girls’ basketball
team made it to the Final Four of the league
playoffs.
Players said that they were grateful that the
CSL provided opportunities for girls’ sports.
“I’ve gained a lot from playing here,”
observed Jasmine. “I want to continue playing
in high school.”

With the New York primary just days away,
Sanders urged rally-goers to help turn out the

A recent Quinnipiac Poll shows Clinton
leading by 12 points in New York, a smaller
margin of potential victory over Sanders from
polls taken earlier in the year.
“If there is a large voter turnout, we will
win,” pledged Sanders. “And if we win New
York, we will make it to the White House.”

Usually, the available apartments require that
you make $30,000 a year, but I know many
people in the area who work full time jobs, as
home assistants or in other professions, and
they only make around $20,000.

up-close look at how decisions are made.”
Rather than focusing on recent graduates,
the Empire State Fellows Program is aimed at
mid-career professionals. The program offers
a competitive compensation and benefits
package and immediately places fellows in
positions in which they collaborate with key
legislators.
“Our hope is that once they’re done with
the program, the Fellows will stay in Albany,”
Montalvo said. “It’s really about forging a
new career path in state government.”
During their initial week in the program,
all Fellows partake in a public policy “boot
camp” where former state agency heads
give participants an overview of New York
government.
Throughout the fellowship, participants
take classes at the Rockefeller Institute of
Government, and engage in debates, speeches,
mock legislative sessions and other exercises.
“It’s not a passive learning experience,”
remarked Luana Ferreira, a current Empire
Fellow. “It’s very collaborative and
interactive.”
Ferreira had a career in education as
a Spanish linguistics and mathematics
professor before her selection for the most
recent class of Empire Fellows, which began
in September 2015.
Currently working at the Department of
State, Ferreira is connected with Governor
Cuomo’s task force on worker exploitation.
She serves as a translator for workers
offering testimony about treatment from their
employers, and prepares documents for them

And in her case, the program’s aim – to
present public service as a viable career
option – seems to have succeeded.
Ferreira says that she feels the desire
to continue working in state government
when
her
fellowship
concludes.
“As a teacher, I felt like I was reaching
students and communities in the classroom,
but working on the state level, I feel like I can
impact people on a much broader scale.”
She said that her class of Empire Fellows
has become a tight-knit group.
“The Fellows are my second family,”
Ferreira remarked. “We’re all starting from
scratch in Albany, some of us away from
our families, and are all sharing the same
experiences. And it’s fascinating to see how
people with extremely different backgrounds
and skill sets can work together.”
To Montalvo, that diversity is an essential
element of the state government process, and
provides Empire Fellows with a newfound
respect for the art of governing.
“Many people have a perception that
things are driven by political affiliation and
agendas,” said Montalvo. “But so much of
government is really about bringing people
together to make change.”

entertainment in the immediate area.
“The bill will allow us to tackle the unique
challenges of Times Square in a manner
that fairly balances the needs of all users
— commuters, tourists, local businesses,
performers, ticket sellers and everyday New
Yorkers,” said DOT Commissioner Polly
Trottenberg.
While the exact size and placement of
the “Designated Activity Zones” are still to
be determined, Trottenberg said there were
likely to be eight such zones, which would
be created with removable markings and
materials to allow DOT and NYPD to adjust
as needed.
“We anticipate some trial and error,”
Trottenberg said.
“The goal here is not to impinge on anyone’s
livelihood,” she stated. “But the intent of
the bill is addressing that people are getting
unwanted and aggressive solicitation.”
Supporters of the bill said it was important
to give pedestrians the chance to pass through
Times Square without being hassled.
“You want to come to Times Square and
hug Elmo or take a chance on a CD from an
unknown artist or take a picture with a naked
lady, go for it, more power to you,” remarked
Councilmember Daniel Garodnick, whose
largely East Side district includes part of Times
Square. “But we are also going to give you a
safe space if you don’t want to be approached
or harassed or solicited.”
Activity in Times Square has made plenty
of tabloid headlines in recent years, with high
profile incidents involving characters and some
New Yorkers complaining about the presence

good for business in the area. He said has
been arrested four times in the past several
years, most recently due to an alleged
altercation with a tourist, and insisted that
police are targeting costumed characters.
“They act like we are criminals,”
Elkhezzani said. “They are harassing us.”
To enforce the proposed zones, O’Hare
said that officers would begin by educating
Times Square characters and sellers.
“We’re not looking to criminalize this behavior,”
O’Hare said, but he added that the bill would
allow police to issue summonses or make arrests
if someone refused to comply with the rules.
The legislation is up for vote in the Council
on April 7. If it passes, the DOT’s proposal
with enter a 30-day public comment period.
Trottenberg said the new rules could be in place
by summertime.
Yanildy Taveras, a ticket seller for Gray
Line Sightseeing tours, expressed concern that
the new DOT rules would negatively impact
her job. The Inwood resident explained that
she makes a good living working for Gray
Line was able to attend community college
working.
Though Taveras sells tickets south of Times
Square on Seventh Avenue, if vendors are
forced out of the plaza, they would migrate
closer to her area, she said.
“As a result, my income would drop,”
stated Taveras. “It is a competitive market
and we work for commission.”
Taveras said that too much attention
was being paid to people who dress up in
costumes, and not other workers who rely on
Times Square jobs for full-time employment.
“We want people to realize that it’s not
just about costumed characters,” Taveras
commented. “I need to make a living, pay
loan payments, go to school. We just want
them to hear us out. We’re not the ones
getting arrested.”
