Rizzuto, PhD First, let’s define what we’re talking about…bullying happens when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening, or leaving someone out on purpose. Bullying is unfair and one-sided, and may consist of hitting, teasing, taunting, spreading rumors and gossip, stealing, or excluding someone from a group. It is carried out with the intent to harm someone. It is often a repeated activity, but may also occur as a one-time event. Bullying always involves a power imbalance. The person bullying has more power due to factors of age, size, strength, support of friends, or access to resources (such as toys and other belongings), and uses this power in a deliberately hurtful way…Although national surveys indicate that childhood violence and abuse (Including bullying) have declined in recent years, research continues to illustrate that, even while declining, bullying remains a highly prevalent behavior. To report suspected abuse contact the Department of Children and Families abuse hotline at: 1-800-96ABUSE or 1-800-962-2873 or the Archdiocesan hotline at: 1-866-80ABUSE or 1-866-802-2873. 5 One Church One Family 6 Our Lady of Florida Spiritual Retreat Center North Palm Beach, Florida Baptist Hospital Visitation Every Wednesday and the first Sunday of each month our team goes to Baptist Hospital to give Communion to the patients. Only One Hour St. Francis Xavier Cabrini was born in Italy yet was the first American citizen to become a Saint. She started a missionary order in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to care for the poor in hospitals and schools. When she arrived in New York City in 1889 without even a place to stay with her small number of sisters, they made several Holy Hours of Adoration before the Sacred Eucharistic Heart of Jesus every day despite their very demanding schedule. She said: “Pray always with Jesus, always remembering that a soul united with Him can do everything. At the time of her death in 1917, she had more than four thousand sisters and over fifty houses in addition to many orphanages, schools and hospitals worldwide. To sign up for an hour e-mail us at [email protected] or call 786242-0481. Midnight Musings / Pensamientos de Media Noche What a Treasure We Have in Our Catholic Faith! ¡Que Tesoro tan Grande Tenemos en Nuestra Fe Católica! “You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone”– the saying is true enough. We don’t appreciate what we have until we lose it. But its also true that we don’t know what we’ve got, until we see others long for it and become so happy when they finally get it. Such were the comments from the wonderful men and women who participated in our RCIA this year. (RCIA means Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, a program of faith formation tailored for adults.) They received the sacraments this past Easter weekend. At our weekly meeting the following Monday night, they kept commenting on how much Easter meant to them as some of them received Baptism and all of them received Confirmation and Eucharist for the first time. We can take our faith for granted, especially we cradle Catholics. We’ve always been baptized; since childhood we have been coming to the Eucharist; Confirmation was just part of the package of growing up Catholic. But for these new Catholics, the sacraments meant everything! Belonging. Some of the RCIA group have been coming to the Church for many years with their families. Yet they have always felt on the outside. Their Catholic relatives went to receive the Eucharist, but these non-Catholics felt left on the sidelines. After their Baptisms and Confirmations, they came to the Lord’s table for the first time. No longer outsiders but family. Almost surreal for them– they could finally do what they had not been allowed to do. All of them talked about how their participation in the Eucharist capped off their whole journey. At the Lord’s table, they knew they belonged. Clarity. We might take for granted our faith and religious formation. These RCIA participants searched for God as adults, with adult questions and needs. They found a clarity of vision in who they were as people belonging to God in Christ. Insight. Different people felt struck by different moments in the ceremonies. One said that she experienced the moment of anointing in Confirmation as a moment of God’s grace; it all came together for her. Another commented that after her reception into the Church and Confirmation, she knelt for the Eucharistic prayer and felt overwhelmed by the reality of Christ’s presence. Her husband had told her for years how important the Eucharist was, but there in the Church on Easter she experienced the Lord’s wonderful working in the Eucharist in a powerful way. These newly baptized and confirmed Christians remind us how precious our Catholic faith and way of life really are. P.S. Remember Raul from last week’s “Musings.” He finally went home to the Lord on Good Friday. We celebrated his funeral Eucharist and burial on Easter Monday. He completed the paschal mystery during the Sacred Triduum as Lent turned into Easter, and he turned from life in this world to eternal life in God’s kingdom. Yours in Christ,
