Tim Elsenburg: Quietly stunned. The first two-thirds is a beautifully constructed sci-fi dystopian
noir, but then in the final third, with the appearance of The Gap, Spares becomes truly
extraordinary. At this point, we're introduced to a place that perhaps only a later-period William
Burroughs (Cities of the Red Night, Western Lands) could've made real.
Generally, abstraction probably isn't a great help when trying to keep a plot moving, especially
at the climax of a novel, but I think I happily evolved several new senses to deal with that as I
raced through the last 100 pages.
Loved the gradual unfolding of the backstory, and the laughs found in those dark corners, too.
Can't recommend enough.

inventando yo misma en mi cabeza al momento de leer. Quiero pensar que así fue y que el
hecho de que me diera detalles de los demás clones fue para que me diera una idea de ellos y
porque Jack los había tomado con él.
¿Soy la única que siento que en cierto punto a Jack ya no le interesaron y que tenía todo un lió
en la cabeza que el hecho de que hayan desaparecido no le importo mucho? Porque llegue en
momentos en lo que me pregunta "¿A que hora va a ir a rescatarlos? No se tomo la molesta de
"secuestrarlos" sólo para abandonarlos así." ¡Y no lo hizo! Es algo que me molesto un poco.
Pero en si Jack andaba por todos lados.
Pero en fin, la historia me envolvió. Terminé leyendo el libro de corrido y emocionada lo que
esta edición decía: "derechos vendidos para llevar la obra al cine". Lastima que no se hizo
(aunque en mi cabeza se veía más para un anime....).
Supongo que lo que me envolvió fue la creatividad del autor. Crear ese tipo de personajes y
lugares futuristas.
Stephen: 5.0 stars. This was an incredible novel. I would describe it as science ficiton "noir" in
the family of Blade Runner or the Takeshi Kovacs novels by Richard Morgan. Brilliantly written
and peopled with superb characters, this one is highly recommended.
