Description
First published in 1797, this is a sequence of bizarre sexual adventures punctuated by
philosophical and theological premises on total egoism and human liberty. Vilified by
respectable society since his own time, de Sade is now considered one of the most prodigious
minds of Western history.
Insightful reviews
Jonathan: I read about half of Juliette about 20 years ago. It's a long, repetitive book so please
forgive me for abandoning it! Can I give four stars to a book that I abandoned? Four stars for a
book that I've described as repetitive? Yes, I can...it's flawed but astonishing.
Although I'm sure that there are people somewhere who would consider de Sade a lightweight,
I'm also sure that 99.99% of the population would consider it pretty intense. For example I
remember getting to the point where de Sade had concocted a scene where there was a row of
women with babies on their shoulders, the children were then stabbed and the blood ran down
the women's backs who defecated at this point so that a row of kneeling men ate the
blood/faeces mixture. Knowing de Sade the men were probably masturbating and/or being
sodomised at the same time - 'Good Grief!!!' I remember getting to this point of the book feeling
desensitised and numb and decided to stop.
It's the unrelenting monotony of de Sade's sexual visions and scenarios that had me in the end.
They should be described as foul and depraved rather than as erotic as they focus so much on
shit, piss, blood and vomit and the sex isn't kinky, it's extreme and painfully violent. I think I felt
sick most of the time rather than aroused. Though if you're into pain and body fluids you'll
probably find it titillating.
Between the sexual perversions, when the libertines are relaxing and eating, there are usually
passages in which the characters voice de Sade's political and philosophical views. These
actually became more interesting than the monotonous sexual acts and de Sade comes across
as a forerunner to Nietzsche - opposed to religion and in favour of man taking control of his own
destiny.
Everyone should read some Sade at some point as it's truly astonishing to read. You just need
to remember that it is fiction, it is the product of a person's mind and not an historical record.
This did not actually happen! After all people read murder-mysteries and crime thrillers but do
not condone the criminal acts that are described. Presumably they realise that it's just a story.
The Marquis is a very interesting historical figure and about the same time as I read Juliette I
also read a biography by Maurice Lever which is thoroughly recommended.
Kelli: Humor, sex, violence - The Marquis has it all!
a. religión.
Ihsan: If this was once a greater novel it'd be the most infamous books ever written. in its place
its writer is infamous whereas his ebook is little-read.The Marquis de Sade confirmed powers of
characterization and narrative in a few his different works, yet "Juliette" is a 1200-page slab of
pornographic fable with philosophic pretensions. Like so much wank fodder it truly is insanely
repetitive: Juliette meets a person who stocks her unique tastes; this determine offers an neverending lecture of self-justification dressed up as philosophy; they've got an orgy in which many
disposable companions are raped, tortured, killed. Then the cycle restarts persistently again.
The violence of the orgies builds, yet they are repeated so forever (alongside their prefatory
lectures) that the reader is desensitized. If the publication have been in basic terms three
hundred pages long, it is going to have the targeted strength of snake venom. "Juliette" even
fails as pornography—-de Sade is extra drawn to describing sexual positions, through
interminably distinct tableaux, than in describing the sensations of sex. yet readers gets good
enough philosophical justification for the acts of sexual violence. De Sade’s easy philosophy is
“I’m an asshole and that i might be allowed to do no matter what I want.” Why? simply
because such impulses are encouraged through Nature--and Nature even approves of murder,
since it frees up area for brand new beings! regardless of being a dedicated atheist (many of his
arguments are stolen from Baron D’Holbach), de Sade makes a Goddess out of Nature—-she
ceaselessly “desires” no matter what crime he sounds like committing. what's more, mankind is
alleged to were initially solitary--a scientifically fake suggestion derived from Rousseau. Like
actual sociopaths, de Sade's characters push aside empathy and altruism as mere expressions
of self-interest. How chagrined he will be to grasp the softer feelings he despised have been
shared by means of dolphins, elephants, chimpanzees, and different highly-intelligent Social
animals! Such emotions and sociability are completely natural, while de Sade’s characters are
freaks, and their creator's view of nature is bunk. De Sade wishes nature’s backing to justify
writing outrageous acts of cruelty, constituted of tortures that may make a focus camp attendant
proud. The booklet is in love with the assumption of an egoistic self that makes use of others in
anyway it likes and destroys them to gratify its power. as a result the literal disposability of
Juliette’s sex-victims—-thousands die to provide her orgasms. None of her sufferers ever
imagine to struggle again or withstand their sexual degradation and destruction--that may wreck
the fable up to giving the reader an opportunity to get to grasp Juliette's victims. If this is often
this type of failure of a novel, why do I supply it 3 stars instead of none? simply because de
Sade writes with such evil energy; simply because his mind's eye is so fertile is devising the
worst for mankind; simply because he is going to such Olympian lengths to invert the ethical
values of western civilization, whether his philosophy is eventually spurious. Spend adequate
time with this e-book and you may consider de Sade engaged on your brain, bold you to indulge
your worst self. De Sade used to be in simple terms too convincing in displaying the savor
making different suffer. in a single of countless numbers of sexual tortures, Juliette nibbles a
boy’s penis until eventually it’s virtually severed. "Where did I learn this before?" I thought,
prior to remembering it was once from an account of the mass-murder spree of Dean Corll and
his accomplices, who sexually tortured and murdered approximately 30 teenaged boys within
the 1970s--all for purposes as in basic terms sadistic as de Sade’s. I shuddered at knowing the
kinship in mentality. "Juliette" presages the atrocities of our personal age; it nonetheless shocks
and haunts. a last note: the translation, through Austryn Wainhouse, is adept yet irritating. He
overuses fustian expressions like “‘tis” and has obnoxious tics like continuously touching on
semen as “fuck” or utilizing pointlessly recondite phrases like “bardash” and “fustigate.”
Alex Schmidt: guy oh man, if I ever end this book, i'll be at the very least four hundred years
previous (over 1200 pages!) SO far, ugly sexual encounters. i like the way in which de Sade
units up ditribes and orations. jogs my memory of Plato, yet with narration and scene. i admire
the single subject matter that conversing can cross one endlessly or not, but actually always,
and secondly, the line of excess, almost always for the imagination, can result in the palace of
wisdom.
